Brit Hume: Trump tariff policies ‘a dramatic departure’ from conservative American thought

Westlake Legal Group Hume-Trump-FOX-REUTERS Brit Hume: Trump tariff policies 'a dramatic departure' from conservative American thought fox-news/world/world-regions/canada fox-news/us/immigration/mexico fox-news/topic/fox-news-flash fox-news/shows/the-story fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/entertainment/media fox news fnc/politics fnc Charles Creitz article 18cbcc2a-eab4-5350-a2cb-fd30576a626a /FOX NEWS/WORLD/GLOBAL ECONOMY/Trade

President Trump’s use of tariffs as a negotiating tool is in stark contrast to how Republicans have traditionally operated, according to Brit Hume.

The move would be a “dramatic departure” from conservative orthodoxy if Trump follows through on his threat to impose tariffs on countries like China and Mexico, Hume said Tuesday on “The Story.”

MEXICO TO BEGIN RATIFICATION PROCESS FOR USMCA TRADE DEAL

“He really has made a kind of dramatic departure from what had been contemporary American conservative thought about trade,” Hume claimed. “Tariffs were considered anathema and people look back to the tariffs that were imposed during the Great Depression and the damage they did and said, ‘this is folly’.”

Last week, Trump threatened to institute a 5 percent tariff on Mexico until the illegal immigration surge at the southern border is “remedied.”

Hume said he believed Trump’s use of tariffs as a warning to Mexico on that particular policy front is not something Capitol Hill is used to.

“[Trump] calls himself ‘tariff man‘ and he is wielding tariffs now as his tool of choice and all kinds of ways. He is trying to help solve the immigration crisis at the border with tariffs threatened against Mexico,” he said.

“He is obviously using them to accomplish trade concessions from China.”

Hume said such plans have the potential to work, but could be politically disastrous if they don’t.

“If he gets trade deals out of this and concessions from Mexico, that will be a huge victory. But it is risky because a big trade war that doesn’t result in a deal sometime soon could be the thing that derails the recovery we have had going on for ten years,” he claimed.

“A trade war that stunts trade could cause that.”

Jonah Goldberg: Trump Mexico tariff threat could ‘scuttle’ planned replacement of NAFTA

Westlake Legal Group Jonah-Goldberg-trump Jonah Goldberg: Trump Mexico tariff threat could 'scuttle' planned replacement of NAFTA fox-news/world/world-regions/location-mexico fox-news/world/world-regions/china fox-news/us/immigration/border-security fox-news/us/immigration fox-news/topic/fox-news-flash fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/entertainment/media fox news fnc/politics fnc ff1e3e4c-9a7d-5654-b9de-65e8c928f081 Charles Creitz article /FOX NEWS/WORLD/GLOBAL ECONOMY/Trade

President Trump’s tariff threat against Mexico could complicate plans to replace the North American Free Trade Agreement, according to columnist Jonah Goldberg.

Trump’s plan to impose escalating tariffs on all Mexican imports – unless the country stems the flow of illegal immigrants – could “scuttle” the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), Goldberg said Tuesday on “Special Report.”

The Trump administration negotiated with Canadian and Mexican officials in hopes of replacing NAFTA with the USMCA.

TRUMP: MEXICO TARIFFS ‘WILL TAKE EFFECT,’ ‘FOOLISH’ FOR GOP TO BLOCK

“At this very moment, President Trump actually has no serious trade agreements signed – there’s one thing with South Korea,” Goldberg said. “But he has this basically rehashing of NAFTA that is on the books coming up and it looks like [the tariff threat] could scuttle it.”

“Meanwhile we are trying to do these trade negotiations with China, which is the other trading partner that makes lots of cheap stuff.”

Goldberg said tariffs being placed on imports from both Mexico and China will hamper American businesses that rely on products manufactured abroad.

“Now we are saying we are also going to make stuff from Mexico really expensive too, which puts a double-squeeze on our businesses here at home,” he said.

Goldberg said he believed that development is the reason top Republican senators like Sens. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., have been critical of the new tariff plan.

“It’s why this is the first time you’ve seen Republican senators to a person stand up to the president, because it is terrible for the economies of a lot of these states,” Goldberg, an American Enterprise Institute fellow, said.

“Trade policy and border security are separate issues,” Grassley said last week.

Toomey said in a statement tariffs are a “dangerous and risky economic tool.”

“They raise the cost of products for American families, reduce market share abroad for U.S. exporters and make our economy less competitive globally. History has shown us time and again that nobody wins a trade war,” the Pennsylvania lawmaker added.

Is Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg showing his far-left colors?

Fox Nation host Lawrence Jones thinks he is, calling him a “chameleon” while reviewing his comments at an MSNBC town hall Monday night.

“His hope message is not going to work because he’s a chameleon,” Jones said while co-hosting “The Five” Tuesday.

BUTTIGIEG TAKES ON TRUMP, PITCHES FOUR NEW TAX HIKES IN FOX NEWS TOWN HALL

Buttigieg surprised many with his answers during a town hall moderated by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews saying he would not have pressured former Minnesota Senator Al Franken to resign, calling for licenses in order to own a gun, and not being able to name one “living” Republican he respects.

“Aw, I had such a great answer if it wasn’t living,” Buttigieg told Matthews.

Jones expressed that Buttigieg tempered his views around different political groups and gave his more “extreme” opinions depending on the audience.

“Obama, what made him so successful at these town halls and talking to people is he gave the same speech every single night. If you look at Mayor Pete he changes up based on the crowd, right. He takes his extreme positions… or if it’s a moderate person he’ll have a more nuanced debate. Climate change becomes a big issue for him when he’s with the green people,” Jones added.

“And it’s because the press hasn’t pushed him on his policy or said ‘you know you’ve changed your position as you’ve gone to different town halls’ is why he’s getting away with it.”

Co-host Greg Gutfeld agreed with Jones’ assessment of the media’s coverage of “Mayor Pete.”

“I don’t know any of his achievements as mayor. I don’t know a single one. It’s not my fault but it’s because the media focus solely on his identity,” Gutfeld said.

Fox News host Steve Hilton labeled Sadiq Khan a “ridiculous character” Tuesday in response to the London mayor’s war of words with President Trump.

The president doubled down on his criticisms of Khan during a press conference in London alongside outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May.

“He’s done a poor job, crime is up, a lot of problems,” Trump reasserted on Tuesday.

The two politicians have traded jabs over Twitter throughout the duration of Trump’s U.K. visit, with Trump labeling the mayor as a “stone cold loser” as he arrived in London. Khan responded by telling BBC that the president’s insults reminded him of “the sort of thing an 11-year-old would do.”

During an appearance on “Outnumbered”, Hilton – who hosts “Next Revolution” on Fox News Channel –  said Khan is simply “pandering” to his left-wing base and is considered a “failure” as mayor.

Hilton mocked Khan for characterizing his statements as a response to Trump, pointing out that Khan fired the first shot with an article over the weekend where he called Trump a “global threat.”

“What a ridiculous character Sadiq Khan is. …  He’s not responding. He wrote a whole article gratuitously attacking the president, so the president was responding to that,” said Hilton.

Hilton, who served as a senior adviser to former U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, said he believes President Trump has “reignited” the special relationship between the countries.

He said in his view, the relationship suffered during the presidency of Barack Obama, who “prioritized the relationship with the E.U. and Germany.

Louisiana Democrat speaks out about supporting pro-life policies

A pro-life Louisiana Democrat appeared on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” to discuss her anti-abortion views, while Democratic presidential candidates continue to show their support for abortion rights.

“In Louisiana … a majority of Democrats in the legislature are pro-life. We refer to ourselves as whole-life Democrats. It’s not difficult for us. It’s our Christian value, our sincerely held belief that abortion is wrong so we fight for it but we are different in how we approach the issue,” Louisiana State Rep. Katrina Jackson said Monday.

She added: “As whole-life Democrats we ask the woman to choose life, but we offer legislation that helps them take care of that life throughout the stage of life.”

Sunday during a Fox News Town Hall, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., endorsed abortion rights, and insisted she would “codify Roe v. Wade, so it is forever the law of the land” when asked to clarify whether she supported late-term abortions.

Other candidates have also expressed their support for abortion rights recently on the heels of what critics call restrictive pro-life laws in Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana where Jackson is leading the way for pro-life legislation.

Jackson told MacCallum she wasn’t “distracted” by national Democrats and their support for abortion rights.

“We talk to Democrats across the state that are pro-life. We really aren’t distracted by those who believe that abortion is right. You are always going to have people that are pro-choice. You will have people that are pro-life. What we try to focus on is our issue. That is being whole-life. Of caring about the entire life. We sometimes say from the womb to the tomb,” Jackson said.

The state representative also expressed hope that Roe v. Wade would be overturned in the future.

“Looking at the overall scope of Roe v. Wade, I believe it is as we see more appointments to the Supreme Court it will be in jeopardy. I believe in 1973, when it was decided it was the wrong decision,” Jackson said.

Mueller report’s alleged ‘distortion’ of John Dowd quote a ‘very serious issue,’ Dershowitz says

The reported discrepancy between a 2017 voicemail transcript and a quotation in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report is a “serious issue,” Alan Dershowitz said Monday night.

Dershowitz claimed on “Hannity” that the quote of former Trump lawyer John Dowd was “distorted” when it was used in the Mueller report.

“This is a very, very serious issue,” he said. “The distortion of the Dowd quote is very serious. Especially since, remember, that a report by a special counsel is always going to be one-sided. Therefore, you have to trust it.”

Dershowitz charged the subject of an investigation doesn’t have a chance to look at the special counsel’s report to find things that he or she may want to challenge.

DEVIN NUNES CALLS ‘FRAUD,’ CITING DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUELLER REPORT, DOWD TRANSCRIPT

“I said before this report is made public, it should be given to the defense and including the former defense attorney like John Dowd, to be able to go through it with a fine-tooth comb, find problems with it [and] file a report stating the defendant’s position at the same time, so the American public can judge which is more credible,” he said.

House Intelligence Committee ranking member Devin Nunes, R-Calif., on Friday called for the release of “all backup and source information” for the Mueller report after reportedly discovering the discrepancy.

Nunes retweeted a side-by-side comparison of the Dowd transcript text and the Mueller report text, suggesting that the Mueller report did not disclose the full Dowd message.

The transcript of Dowd’s voicemail message was released Friday, for which Nunes claimed included content that did not appear in a version that was part of the special counsel’s Russia investigation findings.

In the November 2017 phone call, Dowd said Trump was sympathetic to former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, whose legal team had just severed a joint representation deal with Trump’s attorneys. Flynn went on to cooperate with Mueller’s investigation into Russian election meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

“I understand that you can’t join the joint defense; so that’s one thing. If, on the other hand, we have, there’s information that… implicates the president, then we’ve got a national security issue, or maybe a national security issue, I don’t know… some issue, we got to — we got to deal with, not only for the president, but for the country. So… uh… you know, then-then, you know, we need some kind of heads-up,” Dowd said, according to the transcript.

Federal prosecutors released the transcript in a court filing. Flynn, who pleaded guilty last year to lying to federal investigators about contacts with Russians and is awaiting sentencing, said the call was an effort to obstruct his cooperation with Mueller’s probe.

Will Americans tune in to watch Hillary TV or Hillary the movie? Fox News’ Jesse Watters’ says ‘No,’ America is over Hillary Clinton.

“No one wants to watch Hillary. Americans had their choice. She ran for president twice and they were both like, ‘Click, next guy,'” Watters told his co-hosts Monday on “The Five.”

Reports surfaced last week that the former secretary of state and her daughter, Chelsea, were in talks to launch a television and film production company.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the stories would focus on women.

Watters didn’t hold back when describing Clinton and her possible projects.

“She’s boring. She has boring taste. I don’t think anybody cares what is she is into. This is a vanity project for herself and Chelsea,” Watters said.

“Don’t they have enough propagandists in the media? They have the newspapers, they have the networks. What more do they want?”

The Supreme Court is getting ready to rule on a number of high-profile cases including the Trump administration’s controversial census citizenship question — which senior Fox News judicial analyst Judge Napolitano says will likely be upheld.

The question relates to the 2020 census ahead of the presidential election and seeks to ask whether all members of a household are U.S. citizens. During an appearance on “America’s Newsroom” on Monday morning, Napolitano argued that the majority conservative Supreme Court will likely rule in favor of the question.

“The government’s argument is that we need to know where people are living who are entitled to government benefits and not entitled to government benefits so we can allocate government resources,” Napolitano said.

“The fear is that people will answer incorrectly and there will be an undercount of human beings and therefore an under -allocation of federal benefits and federal resources,” he continued.

“The other fear is that people will not answer correctly for fear they will be deported or otherwise incarcerated if they are living but technically overstaying a visa or in violation of some other law.”

It’s unclear when exactly the Supreme Court will rule on the citizenship question, but Napolitano said it will have to be soon, as census forms need to be printed well in advance.

Oral arguments were presented several weeks ago, with the government’s position seeming “to have captured a majority view,” Napolitano said.

JUDGE RULES AGAINST ADMINISTRATION ON CENSUS CITIZENSHIP QUESTION

Regardless, the judge said, the question raises a significant First Amendment issue.

“The First Amendment which prohibits Congress from abridging the freedom of speech also prohibits them from compelling people to speak,” he said.
