Patrick Shanahan says he appreciates Trump’s executive experience: ‘focused on outcomes and results’

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan told Fox News about why he likes working for President Trump in a “Fox & Friends” exclusive interview set to air Monday and Tuesday.

“What I like about working with the president is, he’s a CEO,” Shanahan told Brian Kilmeade.

“I’ve worked for CEOs. He’s focused on outcomes and results. Will we always agree on everything? No. Are we focused? Do we have the same interests? And the same focus? Yes. My job is to get the results we need to make this country successful. To defend this country.”

The White House on Thursday announced that Trump intends to nominate Shanahan as defense secretary, ending months of speculation about Pentagon leadership. He has served in an interim capacity since Jan. 1, an unprecedented period of uncertainty at the helm of the Pentagon.

Trump elevated the former Boeing Co. executive from deputy secretary to replace Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who resigned in December.

TRUMP ADMIN CRACKS DOWN ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN PUBLIC HOUSING

Shanahan, a pedigreed engineer, moved up through the management ranks at Boeing over a career that began in 1986. The Puget Sound Business Journal called him a Boeing “fix-it” man in a March 2016 report. He oversaw the company’s global supply-chain strategies and use of advanced manufacturing technologies. Shanahan was central to getting the 787 Dreamliner on track after production problems in the program’s early years, the report said.

In March, the Defense Department’s inspector general investigated accusations that Shanahan had shown favoritism toward Boeing during his time as deputy defense secretary, while disparaging Boeing competitors. The investigation appeared to stall his nomination, but the internal watchdog wrapped up the inquiry in April and cleared Shanahan of any wrongdoing.

Shanahan’s next steps are to provide backup for Trump’s agenda globally.

“The strategy with North Korea hasn’t changed because it’s a diplomatic one, but it’s about full denuclearization,” he said. “My job is to make sure that we’re prepared in the event diplomacy fails. That’s my focus with the military. There’s no change to our force posture, our force preparation and our readiness.”

Shanahan also visited a border city in Texas on Saturday, where he noted that he intended to accelerate planning to secure the border and bolster the administration’s ability to accomplish that without the Pentagon’s continuous help.

He also offered assurances the Pentagon would not withdraw its military support prematurely.

He reiterated the same to Fox News.

“We’re gonna be here until the borders are secure,” he told Kilmeade. “We’ve got to have the backs of the men and women here who are being overrun.”

Shanahan told Congress this past week that there have been 4,364 military troops on the border, including active-duty and National Guard, building barriers, providing logistics and transportation service and other activities in support of Customs and Border Protection. The troops have been prohibited from performing law enforcement duties.

Troops have been deployed on the border since last October and are set to remain there through September.

Constitutional expert on ‘Life, Liberty & Levin’ says Democrats undermining the idea of democracy and justice

In an interview set to air Sunday on  “Life, Liberty & Levin“, constitutional expert Dr. John Eastman says the actions taken by Democrats in office are actually undermining not only President Trump but democracy and justice in the United States.

“The purpose of government is to secure those rights against any tyranny that would take them away whether again of one or many or what have you. We’ve now got a significant portion of our population that thinks the purpose of government is otherwise to redistribute rights to take from some and give to others. [The founders] understood that to be the very definition of injustice or an unjust law,” Eastman said.

Eastman also says the Mueller investigation, the House Judiciary Committee’s actions and politically motivated judges are not only challenging the results of the 2016 election but the “very notion we govern ourselves.”

“And then this election and what we’re seeing here not just with this investigation but with the broader investigations and the use of subpoenas and federal judges that had been nominated and confirmed by President Obama appointed by President Obama blocking this President’s actions perfectly legitimate actions,” Eastman told Levin.  “So this is really a challenge to the results of the last election which means it’s a challenge to the American people and the very notion that we govern ourselves.”

On Wednesday, House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., declared a “constitutional crisis” after his committee voted to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt for defying a subpoena for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted Russia report and underlying documents.

Since the Mueller report was released, Democrats and Republicans have clashed over whether or not Trump obstructed justice and Barr’s summary interpretation.

Eastman criticized Mueller for not delivering a decisive conclusion, saying his report “presumes guilt” and is altering America’s concept of “justice.”

“And you know even the bottom line refusal to draw a conclusion gets the presumption of innocence wrong. He said I couldn’t find enough evidence to exonerate President Trump from the obstruction of justice allegations. That’s not his job as a prosecutor. The only job is to decide whether there’s enough evidence to bring an indictment with a likelihood of conviction beyond a reasonable doubt we presume innocence unless we can prove otherwise,” Eastman said.

Eastman added: “His report presumes guilt and less and less Trump can prove otherwise. And it is a fundamental altering of our very basic conceptions of justice.”

Rep. McClintock: Dems engaging in ‘weaponization of IRS’ that began under Lois Lerner’

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., argued on Saturday that House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., weaponized the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by demanding the Treasury Department hand over President Donald Trump’s tax returns.

“I think we’re seeing the weaponization of the IRS,” McClintock said while appearing on “America’s News HQ.” “It began under Lois Lerner when they turned the entire force of that powerful agency against common citizens who are simply trying to participate in our political process.”

McClintock was referring to the Obama-era scandal in which IRS official Lois Lerner’s division targeted conservative groups filing for tax exempt status before the 2012 presidential election.

Former President Barack Obama’s administration refused to prosecute any IRS employees over the issue and Trump’s administration similarly said in 2017 that it had no plans to pursue Lerner.

CONCHA: SOME PRESS COVERING TRUMP’S LEAKED TAX RETURNS SHOWING ‘THE WORST KIND OF BIAS’

McClintock’s comments came after the House Ways and Means Committee subpoenaed the Treasury Department for Trump’s tax returns — coveted records that Democrats and the media have been trying to get since his 2016 campaign.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin already rejected a similar request, raising questions about whether Congress would pursue action against him as well.

“As you have recognized, the Committee’s request is unprecedented, and it presents serious constitutional questions, the resolution of which may have lasting consequences for all taxpayers,” Mnuchin said in a letter on Wednesday.

Like Mnuchin, McClintock warned on Saturday about the impact of the controversy over Trump’s tax returns, details of which The New York Times reported on in a story on Tuesday.

“Well, I mean we’ve already seen a number of the president’s past tax returns leaked to the press against his will,” he said. “And if they can do that to him, they can do it to anybody they disagree with. All of our tax returns are subject to that kind of politicization if this precedent is allowed to stand.”

Gowdy: ‘Saint James’ Comey thinks he ‘gets to write the moral script’

Former Rep. Trey Gowdy reacted Friday to former FBI Director James Comey’s appearance at a CNN town hall this week, saying that Comey believes he always “gets to write the moral script.”

“Saint James Comey,” Gowdy, R-S.C., said on “Hannity,” gave “pretty much the same as any other interview. He is always right. He gets to write the moral script.”

During the town hall, Comey said that people like outgoing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein are not of “strong character.”

“I think people like that, like Rod Rosenstein, who are people of accomplishment but not real sterling character, strong character, find themselves trapped. And then they start telling themselves a story to justify their being trapped which is, ‘Yeah, he’s awful but the country needs me,’” Comey told host Anderson Cooper.

JAMES COMEY BLASTS ROD ROSENSTEIN, MOCKS DEPARTYIN DEPUTY AG FOR THINKING ‘THE COUNTRY NEEDS ME’

During the event, Comey also told Cooper that he tried to avoid becoming like Rosenstein and other “co-opted” members of the administration by openly disagreeing with President Trump in the Oval Office.

Gowdy told host Jason Chaffetz that Comey seemingly believes he is correct, and “everybody else is wrong.”

“When I asked Jim Comey how did the Russia investigation get started, who started it, he didn’t know it was Peter Strzok, he never read the initiation document,” Gowdy said. “Comey refuses to believe that any of these decisions should be looked at, so he is always right.”

“He and [former Director of National Intelligence James] Clapper and [former CIA Director John] Brennan are validating the concerns that other people including the president have had about their objectivity by their comments and their demeanor after they left their offices,” Gowdy added.

CONCHA: SOME PRESS COVERING TRUMP’S LEAKED TAX RETURNS SHOWING ‘THE WORST KIND OF BIAS’

Gowdy said that if Comey had not been fired, he would still be “working for an administration he thinks is too good for impeachment.”

Chaffetz said that although he’s been critical of Rosenstein and his tenure, he found Comey’s comments inappropriate.

Gowdy added that Comey exhibited “moral arrogance” with the comments.

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham and Dr. Drew Pinsky discussed “toxic masculinity” and the complexities that come with it Friday on the “The Ingraham Angle.”

Ingraham was talking about the heroism displayed by some young men during school shootings, in particular 18-year-old Kendra Castillo, who died Tuesday while confronting a shooter at a STEM school in Colorado.

COLORADO SCHOOL SHOOTING LEAVES AT LEAST 1 DEAD, 8 INJURED

Two suspects were in custody in connection with the shooting, which left eight others injured, according to authorities. The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Devon Erickson and a juvenile accomplice.

The shooting took place in Highlands Ranch, a Denver suburb only about 7 miles from Littleton, site of the infamous Columbine High School mass murder in 1999.

Pinsky discussed that what fuels “toxic masculinity” can also be responsible for heroism.

“There is a tendency for the males to turn their aggression, which is what people worry about with toxic masculinity — turn aggression into a positive
impulse,” Pinsky said.

“Whether they are landing at the beach in Omaha [Normandy, France, during World War II] or rushing a shooter, there is a natural tendency that they actually learn through rough-and-tumble play that is automatic in young males, where they learn to sort of modulate their aggression,” Pinsky said. “But they also learn how to turn it up so they know when it’s time to bring it on.”

Ingraham argued that young men today are taught to fight their natural impulses that lead to courage in favor of stamping out “toxic masculinity.”

“So much in society today discourages men from believing there is a natural impulse to be chivalrous or show this type of physical courage,” Ingraham said.

Pinsky noted being heroic wasn’t exclusive to men.

“Women can be heroic, too,” he said, and agreed with Ingraham.

“Because of the aggression and the things that makes us ‘toxic,’ it makes us do the things that have pushed society forward and also help people in extreme situations, where there’s an extraordinary amount of selflessness. But it’s aggression, ultimately it’s aggression and we’re turning out aggression on an aggressor. It’s OK then,” Pinsky said.

“Real Time” host Bill Maher was placed in a strange position on Friday night’s show. The liberal comedian found himself acknowledging President Trump‘s positive effect on the U.S. economy during a heated conversation with U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, a 2020 presidential candidate.

Ryan began by dismissing what he described as recent “happy talk” about the stock market and low unemployment.

“Most people are still struggling to make ends meet,” the congressman said, adding that he was trying to figure how to get the economy “working for working-class people.”

But Maher challenged Ryan, accusing the congressman of speaking in predictable terms for a candidate hoping to oust an incumbent.

But Ryan stood his ground. “I know where the economy is going,” he told Maher.

“Where?” the host asked.

“Right now, nowhere,” Ryan answered.

The liberal comedian then, intentionally or not, went to bat for Trump.

“C’mon, the economy’s not horrible,” Maher told Ryan. “Four-point-four percent is the unemployment rate in Ohio. It’s kinda hard to run against the economy in Ohio, isn’t it?”

“No,” Ryan responded, “because the average wage has only gone up 20 bucks a week.”

“Originally, it went up big,” Maher said “Wages did finally rise. We have to … “

“After how many years? After how many decades?” Ryan interrupted.

“All right, but Trump has been president for two years. We can’t ignore that fact,” Maher shot back. “Finally, wages went up. He’s the guy in the Oval Office. He’s gonna run on that.”

Nevertheless, Ryan doubled down, listing various layoffs that have taken place in his state.

Giuliani cancels Ukraine trip, says he’d be ‘walking into a group of people that are enemies of the US’

Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s personal attorney, said Friday on “Fox News @ Night” that he will not be traveling to Ukraine as previously announced.

Giuliani, a former Republican mayor of New York City, said that he believed he would be “walking into a group of people that are enemies of the president, and in some cases, enemies of the United States and in one case, an already convicted person who has been found to be involved in assisting the Democrats with the 2016 investigation.

“There was a great fear that the new [Ukrainian] president would be surrounded by, literally, enemies of the president [of the United States] who were involved in that and people who are involved with other Democratic operatives,” he told host Shannon Bream.

GIULIANI WILL TRAVEL TO UKRAINE, SAYING COUNTRY’S PROBES MAY BE ‘VERY, VERY HELPFUL’ FOR TRUMP

“I’m convinced from what I’ve heard from two very reliable people tonight that the president [Ukrainian President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky] is surrounded by people who are enemies of the president [Trump], and people who are — at least [in] one case — clearly corrupt and involved in this scheme,” Giuliani said.

Giuliani said that his decisions had nothing to do with the upcoming 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Bream asked about “pushback” Giuliani received for announcing his original decision to go, including from U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who demanded that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee open an inquiry into the situation.

“Rudolph Giuliani, the President’s personal lawyer, has apparently held meetings with Ukrainian officials in the United States and plans to travel to Ukraine for further discussions,” Murphy wrote, in a letter to committee chairman Sen. James Risch, R-Idaho, according to NBC News.

“As far as we know, none of these meetings are being coordinated with the U.S. State Department or other government agencies,” Murphy wrote.

RUDY GIULIANI APOLOGIZES FOR HAVING HIRED JAMES COMEY YEARS AGO: ‘I’M VERY EMBARRASSED ABOUT THAT’

Giuliani said that he would welcome Murphy’s proposed hearing, saying that he could lay out what he said was alleged “unbelievably incriminating evidence about members of the [Democratic National Committee], members of the Clinton campaign who were involved in gathering information there that was negative to the Trump campaign.”

The former mayor also pointed to evidence that 2020 hopeful and former Vice President Joe Biden improperly pressured Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and the country’s parliament to fire Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin, in March 2016.

At the same time, Biden’s son, Hunter, served on the board of the Ukrainian natural gas firm Burisma Holdings — which was owned by an oligarch, Mykola Zlochevsky, who in turn was being investigated by that same prosecutor.

Shokin was soon voted out by the Ukrainian parliament. After leaving office, Biden admitted on video that he had threatened that the U.S. would pull $1 billion in loan guarantees unless Shokin was terminated.

“That stinks, the facts are stubborn, and eventually this is going to have to be investigated,” Giuliani said, adding that in order to prevent any “political suggestions” he is going to “step back and just watch [the situation] unfold.”

Fox Business Network anchor Stuart Varney said Friday on “Fox & Friends” that the trade talks between the Trump administration and President Xi Jinping’s government in China is “the most important financial story of the year.”

Varney, host of “My Take” on Fox Nation, said that the situation involves the “world’s two biggest and most dynamic economies.”

“It is, frankly, a standoff,” Varney said. “The tariffs are in place, the Chinese say … they may retaliate but we don’t know how. Talks are progressing.”

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He flew to Washington to engage in high level meetings in the District with members of Trump’s team.

Varney said Trump has positioned himself as the “negotiator-in-chief” and is coming at the problem from a position of strength.

“I want to see President Trump in our negotiating chair and nobody else. That is what he does best,” Varney said of the former New York City real estate mogul.

Varney agreed with Trump’s past sentiments that China has taken advantage of the United States.

“Our market … is huge, and they have exploited it. They’ve exported stuff to us year after year,” he said, adding that the combination of quality and price point for Chinese goods in America is a positive thing.

Varney said that another big question is whether or not the “farm belt” will continue to support Trump as the tarriffs begin to affect agriculture.

In a report Friday afternoon, Fox Business correspondent Jeff Flock said that, while visiting an Illinois hog farm, China is a large market for American pork.

Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh said Friday that former Vice President Joe Biden may have already won the Democratic presidential primary and that President Trump may benefit from disenfranchised Bernie Sanders voters.

“Do you realize it may well be the Democrat primary race is over? In New Hampshire, Joe Biden is blowing out Bernie Sanders. Bernie Sanders was up 30 points nationally, he was up 25 or 30 points in New Hampshire, the last poll, and Biden has just launched over Bernie Sanders,” Limbaugh said on “The Rush Limbaugh Show.”

Biden leads the Vermont senator 36 percent to 18 percent in New Hampshire according to a Monmouth University poll released Thursday.

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg sits in third with 9 percent and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., follows with 8 percent.

Limbaugh said the poll results “may not be bad,” adding that Sanders voters “might end up voting for Trump before the end of the day.”

President Trump appeared to be responding to the poll Friday tweeting, “Looks to me like it’s going to be SleepyCreepy Joe over Crazy Bernie. Everyone else is fading fast!”

The radio talk show host also prodded Democrats for Biden leading the polls while the more diverse candidates remain unable to build traction with Democratic voters.
