Netflix prank show targeting ‘new hires’ sparks backlash

A new Netflix hidden-camera prank show is causing an uproar over its premise of targeting people believing they’re starting a new job.

The streaming giant has ordered eight episodes of “Prank Encounters,” which is being hosted and produced by “Stranger Things” star Gaten Matarazzo and is set to launch later this year, Deadline reported.

NETFLIX, DISNEY CONSIDER BOYCOTTING GEORGIA, CONTINUE PARTNERSHIPS WITH EGYPT, CHINA

“Prank Encounters” is described as a “terrifying and hilarious prank show” that “takes two complete strangers who each think they’re starting their first day at a new job” and that it’s “business as usual until their paths collide and these part-time jobs turn into full-time nightmares.”

AV Club slammed the show’s premise, claiming it’s “screwing with people trying to find work.”

“Props to Matarazzo,” AV Club’s William Hughes writes. “This is a far scarier premise than any monster that’s ever crawled out of the Upside Down.”

The show is just one of many projects for the 16-year-old Matarazzo. The New Jersey native also raises awareness of cleidocranial dysplasia, the disorder he has been living with, which affects his bones and teeth, and also performs in a band, among other activities, Deadline reported.

The Netflix series was blasted on social media.

Netflix did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Bill Maher scolds ‘social justice warriors’ over Oberlin lawsuit: ‘There’s a price to pay’

“Real Time” host Bill Maher on Friday’s show slammed the “social justice warriors” at Ohio‘s Oberlin College, a school recently ordered to pay $44 million to resolve a libel dispute stemming from a shoplifting incident at a nearby bakery.

“Social justice warriors … are finally finding that maybe there’s a price to pay [for political correctness],” Maher said during the show’s panel segment. The liberal comedian has long argued that political correctness does more harm than good to the cause of liberalism.

“Social justice warriors … are finally finding that maybe there’s a price to pay.”

BILL MAHER CALLS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS ‘CANCER ON PROGRESSIVISM,’ SAYS HE DOESN’T TRUST MEDIA

Some students and faculty at Oberlin College had launched a boycott against Gibson’s Bakery, allegedly accusing a bakery employee of racism after some black teens were suspected of shoplifting. The boycott reportedly caused the business to take a financial hit. But after the teens pleaded guilty roughly a year later, a jury found the university guilty of libel resulting in the school’s financial penalty.

During the “Real Time” panel segment, New York Times columnist Bari Weiss stressed that social media comments on Twitter and other platforms can cause “reputational damage.”

NeverTrump conservative commentator Charlie Sykes added that the “bullying” culture and the “calling you out” mentality have intensified in recent years.

“I’m tired of the term ‘political correctness’,” Sykes said later. “It’s like ‘performative wokeness.’ In our mono-culture, we have to find a way to humiliate, to drive people out that we disagree with, and I will tell you that there’s a huge backlash. … The folks on the right were bailing on liberalism. … They’re basically saying that, ‘The Left wants to destroy you, they hate you, they want to take away your rights, they want to destroy your business.’ Unfortunately, you have anecdotes like this that make it that plausible.”

“How do we get mainstream liberals to stand up that faction?” Maher asked.

Sykes responded by pointing to remarks made by South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, a Democrat who is seeking the party’s 2020 presidential nomination. Sykes described Buttigieg as a potential “bridge” builder between the LGBT community and Chick-fil-A, the restaurant chain linked to several LGBT-related controversies.

Outgoing White House press secretary Sarah Sanders is getting undue criticism because a reduction in daily briefings doesn’t give TV reporters more personal airtime, a Sanders predecessor claimed Friday.

President Trump is one of the best-accessible presidents when it comes to engaging with reporters and their critiques are unfounded, Sean Spicer said on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

“The president has been so much more accessible and engages so much more” than past presidents, Spicer said. “I think the briefings serve a utility. They should occur, but maybe not on a daily basis.”

WH PRESS SECRETARY SARAH SANDERS WILL LEAVE OFFICE BY THE END OF THE MONTH, TRUMP ANNOUNCES

“As you saw with Sarah, she’s out there … all the time on camera, talking to the press,” Spicer added. “They don’t like it as much because it doesn’t work as well for their cable contracts and their YouTube views and things like that.”

Spicer claimed that reporters prefer formal White House press briefings because, “They can make it about them.”

He and fellow guest Ari Fleischer — who served as press secretary under former President George W. Bush — added that the job of press secretary is so much more than just holding briefings and making public statements.

“There is a facilitation of access and interviews to other government officials, to information that’s coming in and out of the White House, whether it’s personnel, events or policies. So, the press office is very busy all day long,” Spicer said.

Fleischer said a good press secretary is a “happy warrior” who is close to the president and will stand by him.

On Thursday, Trump announced that Sanders will be leaving her position at the end of the month.

“After 3 1/2 years, our wonderful Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be leaving the White House at the end of the month and going home to the Great State of Arkansas,” Trump said.

“She is a very special person with extraordinary talents, who has done an incredible job! I hope she decides to run for Governor of Arkansas – she would be fantastic. Sarah, thank you for a job well done!”

It’s unclear why New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., are running for president in 2020, according to Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz.

De Blasio and Swalwell are polling very low in the Democratic primary field and are pressing for President Trump’s impeachment, Biggs said Friday on “Hannity.”

“These people are running — who knows why they are running,” the lawmaker said.

“They’re going to be in the debates, but good grief — you are talking about people who are just making the most outrageous claims on hypothetical statements for impeachment,” he continued.

BILL DE BLASIO: DEMS TOO FOCUSED ON TRYING TO IMPEACH TRUMP, BUT MUELLER REPORT SHOWED ‘IMPEACHABLE OFFENSES’

“It’s absurd, it’s ludicrous. And actually, frankly, in Swalwell’s case, it’s actually funny.”

De Blasio said in a recent interview Congress that should start the impeachment process in earnest.

“They should begin impeachment proceedings. We can no longer accept the notion of a president who openly invites interference in our election,” de Blasio said, reacting to remarks Trump made in his interview this week with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos.

Hannity” guest host Jason Chaffetz noted Swalwell has made similar calls for an “impeachment inquiry.”

Biggs said such instances show Democrats have no policy platform beside holding anti-Trump feelings.

“I look at the Democrats and say, they don’t have policy prescriptions,” he said. “They don’t want to bring the budget under control. They want to yell about the president needing to be impeached.”

Chaffetz added he believed de Blasio would be better served working to improve conditions in the Big Apple.

“The city is a mess,” he said.

Fox News’ Jesse Watters and Juan Williams picked up where they left off on Friday, once again debating the president’s comments that he would be willing to listen to a foreign government if it had information on a political rival.

Trump on Friday sought to clarify his comments, saying on “Fox & Friends” that he could report such conversations to the FBI and arguing that Democrats should be scrutinized for alleged spying on his 2016 campaign.

TRUMP SAYS HE WOULD ‘WANT TO HEAR’ DIRT ON 2020 RIVALS FROM FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS

“Today, he backpedaled and he says to the American people, of course, I wouldn’t take dirt on my opponent. I’m thinking Jesse must think, yeah, I guess Juan was right,” Williams joked on “The Five.”

“I never think that. That’s never happened,” Watters jokingly responded.

“I think he said the other day, I would listen and maybe I would give it to the FBI. You still have not been able to answer the fact that Hillary paid for the foreign dossier. Trump never paid for anything, never got anything. Hillary got it and paid for it.”

Both men once again went back and forth for several minutes, with Watters saying that Clinton should be scrutinized more for allegedly funding the Christopher Steele dossier on Trump, and Williams saying that the “Watters’ World” host was having a “fever dream.”

Co-host Dana Perino at one point injected that they “needed a chalkboard” to keep track of the points they were making.

Fox Business’ Kennedy jumped in and said that Trump and his defenders should drop the topic.

“I think it is a really foolish thing the president said. I don’t thing anybody should go out of their way to justify his remarks to George Stephanopolous. He did enough damage in this, he needs to drop it,” Kennedy said.

Huckabee on Iran tanker attacks: ‘Ridiculous’ to believe Iran ‘had nothing to do with it’

It was absurd for the Iranian government to deny involvement in attacks on oil tankers in the Middle East, according to Mike Huckabee.

Videotape appearing to show people removing a mine from one of the damaged tankers is a clear example of that, Huckabee said Friday on “The Story.”

“It’s ridiculous for them to claim they had nothing to do with it. It’s like who are you going to believe – Iran or your lying eyes? There is the tape. It’s clear what they’re doing,” the former Arkansas governor claimed.

IRAN RESPONSIBLE FOR ‘BLATANT ASSAULT’ ON OIL TANKERS IN GULF OF OMAN, MIKE POMPEO SAYS

“This is a region and country and regime that has been so dishonest and so brutal, not only to their enemies like Israel and the rest of the world, but also to their own people.”

Huckabee considered possible reasons for Iran’s alleged actions.

“I cannot even begin to imagine,” he said, “unless they are poking at the bear just to see what the United States and other countries will do.”

The onetime 2016 presidential candidate praised President Trump for exercising restraint in reaction to the attacks in the Gulf of Oman.

“I think the president is playing this right. He is not rushing into military action, which would be a huge mistake. He’s being very careful and calculating. But I think he is also being very clear that this kind of behavior is not something that the rest of the world – not just the U.S. – is going to sit back and tolerate.”

In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Secretary of State Pompeo blamed Iran for the attacks as well.

“This assessment is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication.,” he said.

Iran has denied it played any role in the attacks. The Iranian mission to the United Nations accused the United States and its Gulf allies of warmongering in a statement Thursday evening: Iran “categorically rejects the U.S. unfounded claim with regard to 13 June oil tanker incidents and condemns it in the strongest possible terms.”

President Trump dismissed Joe Biden’s chances of becoming president in 2020, knocking the former vice president’s “mental capacity” and claiming Biden “doesn’t have what it takes.”

Speaking in a live “Fox & Friends” phone interview Friday, Trump claimed not to be concerned about taking on Biden next year.

Steve Doocy asked the president what he meant when he said Biden “doesn’t have what it takes.”

“It means mental capacity, it means a lot of different things. He never did have what it takes,” said Trump, joking that he used to refer to Biden as “one percent Joe” for his prior failed presidential runs.

“Obama came along, and surprisingly, took him off of, I say, the trash heap.”

Trump noted that Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who he called “Pocahontas,” is doing better in recent polls and said he’d “love to run against her.” He said he’d also like to run against Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., but lamented that Sanders is falling in recent polls.

He said he sees those three candidates as the most likely to be his opponent in 2020.

“They talk about Kamala, I don’t see Kamala. … Mayor Pete, I don’t see at all, I think that’s a joke,” said Trump, who expressed confidence ahead of the formal launch of his re-election campaign Tuesday in Orlando, Florida.

A new national poll this week contained some warning signs for Trump, showing Biden and a slew of other Democratic candidates leading in head-to-head matchups.

The Quinnipiac University public opinion survey, released Tuesday, also indicated a deterioration in Biden’s large lead over the rest of this historically enormous field of nearly two-dozen Democrats.

Democrats have been outraged by the president’s comments made in an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos.

Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday reiterated his belief that President Trump purposely “played” the media by saying he would listen to a foreign government who has intelligence on a political rival.

“Of course, listening to foreign research or any ‘opp’ research, or any reporting, anything elicit and saying you would take it to the FBI, that would not be a crime,” the host said on “Hannity.”

TRUMP SAYS HE WOULD ‘WANT TO HEAR’ DIRT ON 2020 RIVALS FROM FOREIGN GOVERNMENTS

“I wonder if he knew exactly what he was doing, the exact way he was asked that question and the answer he gave because time after time, he knows the media bubble and fizz like Alka-Seltzer in water and he is playing them like a flute.”

Hannity was referring to comments that Trump made during an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in the Oval Office. The host also shared his theory on why the president’s critics are so easily manipulated.

“Here’s the point, and the people you just saw, as we predicted, so blinded in their hatred for President Trump, they don’t even realize they were set up like bowling pins, showing their ridiculous hypocrisy. Because they’re the very same people smearing the president hour after hour,” Hannity said.

Hannity continued to press critics who believe Hillary Clinton’s alleged actions were fine but Trump’s are supposedly illegal.

“The same ones that ignored, let’s see, foreign election interference that was bought and paid for by Hillary Clinton and the DNC,” Hannity said.

“It’s like I’m the only person who cares about Bernie Sanders. No outrage by any of these people. She bought it, she sought it, she paid for it, they spread it, they tried to use it to impact the election.”
