Congressman John Garamendi said Wednesday on “Outnumbered Overtime” that the debate over whether to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress for not turning over the unredacted Mueller report may lead to a “fundamental fight” over the balance of power in Washington.

Garamendi, D-Calif., a member of the House Armed Services Committee, warned that President Trump’s assertion of executive privilege protecting those documents from Congress may set a powerful precedent if a court decides in the Republican’s favor.

“There is a fundamental fight going on here about power distribution between the three branches of government,” he said.

TRUMP INVOKES EXECUTIVE PRIVILEGE OVER MUELLER REPORT: HERE’S HOW IT WORKS

Garamendi said that whether or not Trump retains the White House in the 2020 election, America may “end up with an extremely powerful president” when it comes to the office itself going forward.

Garamendi said that the Barr situation may very well land before a federal court.

“If Trump is able to continue the path that he’s on, there will be a radical change of power between the Congress, the courts and the presidency,” he said.

At the beginning of Wednesday’s hearing, Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said that “no person… can be permitted to flout the will of Congress and defy a valid subpoena.”

The top Republican on the panel, Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, called the vote to hold Barr in contempt a “cynical, mean-spirited [and] counterproductive step.”

“Democrats have no plans, no purpose and no viable agenda beyond attacking this administration,” Collins said.

Speaking in the same Fox News interview as Garamendi, House Judiciary Committee Member Tom McClintock, R-Calif., said that the Democrats know that Barr cannot comply with their subpoena and obey the law at the same time.

President Trump said Wednesday that America is the “the piggy bank that everybody wants to rob,” and that his administration is helping the country’s economy excel.

Speaking at a rally in the Florida Panhandle, Trump said that the United States lost millions of manufacturing jobs during the Obama administration.

“They let other countries raid our factories, steal our jobs and rob us blind,” Trump said. “Other than that, they were very nice.”

Trump said that previous administrations “allowed China to freely loot our economy” and steal intellectual property.

He said that although he considers President Xi Jinping a “friend,” he knows that Xi is in favor of China winning any economic rivalry.

Trump said that under his leadership, America’s market is “the thing that everybody wants.”

Appearing to refer to 2016 campaign rival Hillary Clinton, Trump added that if “another person” were in the White House, that would not be the case — and the night’s rally attendance would total “like 10 people.”

In a Tuesday interview on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom,” Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., said that Trump “indicated that … the Chinese were starting to get cold feet and move away a little bit from some of the things they agreed upon” in regard to purported “trade abuses.”

At a rally in Panama City Beach, Fla., on Wednesday, President Trump addressed the political crisis in Venezuela calling the situation “disgraceful.”

“This was one of the wealthiest countries really in the world. And now they’re living so badly, so dangerously,” Trump told the crowd.

POMPEO RIPS SUPPORT FOR VENEZUELA’S MADURO

Disputed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has fallen under increasing international pressure after being re-elected last year in a contest critics call rigged. Russia, China and Cuba, among other countries, have supported Maduro, while the U.S. and more than 50 other nations have backed and recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó.

Tuesday, Vice President Pence said the U.S. would extend sanctions to all members of Venezuela’s Supreme Court if they continue to prop up Maduro. The U.S. already has put sanctions on about 150 officials and businesses in the country. On the same day, the court opened a criminal investigation against six opposition lawmakers for allegedly “betraying the homeland” and “instigating an insurrection” following last week’s failed uprising.

“So many people are dying and we’re working hard on that problem and we’re being tough,” Trump said. “It’s not fair what’s happening to those people, great people.”

President Trump riffed on his potential opponents in the 2020 presidential election, making jokes at the expense of three of the current Democratic contenders.

Speaking in Panama City Beach, Fla., Trump said that he hopes the Democrats quickly “pick somebody” to run against him.

“Let’s start this thing,” he said.

Trump appeared to doubt whether South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg could handle complex negotiations with economic rival China.

LIMBAUGH: THE HATRED FOR TRUMP IS A ‘BOTTOMLESS PIT,’ TRUMP FAMILY WILL BE TARGETED IF HE LOSES IN 2020

“We have a young man, Buttigieg. … He’s got a great chance, doesn’t he? He’ll be great representing us against President Xi of China — that’ll be great,” Trump said.

“I want to be in that room, I want to watch that one,” he said.

Trump added that China recently “broke” an economic agreement and that Vice Premier Liu He will be flying to Washington to negotiate a “deal” after tariffs were imposed on Beijing.

During the rally, Trump also expressed concern that several foreign leaders want Vice President Joe Biden to be president.

Laura Ingraham previously discussed the Politico report on her “Ingraham Angle” program.

“Of course they do, so they can continue to rip off the U.S.,” Trump said of the report. “I think if I heard that, I’d never vote for him.”

“Sleepy Joe and Crazy Bernie [Sanders],” he said. “I’ll take any of them.”

Trump later asked the audience about former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, saying the Texas Dem’s poll numbers appear to be “falling like a rock.”

Conversely, Trump heaped praise on a number of Florida Republicans, including Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio.

Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano said Wednesday that he believes when the dust settles, Special Counsel Robert Mueller and former White House lawyer Donald McGahn will testify before Congress.

“Ultimately, Bob Mueller will testify,” Napolitano predicted on “Shepard Smith Reporting.”

He made a similar prediction about McGahn, whom host Smith noted was quoted extensively in the Mueller report.

Napolitano said there is a “substantial public interest” in hearing from Mueller and McGahn.

NADLER DECLARES ‘CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS’ AFTER CONTEMPT VOTE, ACCUSES TRUMP OF ATTACKING ‘ESSENCE OF DEMOCRACY’

In regard to President Trump’s assertion of executive privilege powers, Napolitano said that he’d “waived” the motion in regard to McGahn’s statements to the FBI and Mueller’s team.

He said that Trump gave McGahn permission to be interrogated by the bureau and the special counsel, leaving the subject matter of those conversations outside the realm of executive privilege going forward.

Napolitano added that Mueller is thus far required to follow the orders of his superiors at the executive branch when it comes to testifying before Congress.

Mueller has “also said his work is over, so he could resign his job as special counsel tonight and walk into the House Judiciary Committee tomorrow morning and give testimony,” he added.

The White House is thus far blocking McGahn from producing documents demanded by the Judiciary Committee.

Current White House Counsel Pat Cipollone wrote to Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., on Tuesday, notifying him that McGahn would not comply with the subpoena, which, according to the letter, seeks certain White House records given to McGahn that are related to Mueller’s investigation.

Sen. Klobuchar touts credentials as a ‘proven progressive’

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., defended her views and record at a Fox News town hall on Wednesday, saying progressives should support her bid for the presidency in 2020 because she is a “proven progressive.”

Many view Klobuchar as a more moderate Democratic presidential candidate among the nearly two dozen hopefuls in the race. During the town hall, that distinction formed the underpinnings of one question from an audience member, who asked why progressives should support the senator and noted her “unwillingness to support” Medicare for all or free college for all.

KLOBUCHAR IS A ‘NO’ ON FREE TUITION

“Progressives should support me because I’m a proven progressive. The last time I checked, if you want to be a progressive and support progressives, then you are supposed to make progress. All right? And that is what I have done. That it is what I’ve done my whole life,” Kobuchar told the Wisconsin audience.

The president and Republicans have accused the Democratic Party of moving further to the left; Democrats including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have downplayed the more progressive impulses of recently elected newcomers such as Rep. Alexandria  Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.

Klobuchar isn’t the only candidate to defend her record to the progressive elements in the Democratic Party. Before he entered the race, former Vice President Joseph Biden was touting his own progressive bona fides.

“I’m told I get criticized by the ‘New Left,’ ” Biden told a Delaware audience this past March. “I have the most progressive record of anybody running.”

AMY KLOBUCHAR’S TREATMENT OF STAFF LED TO REBUKE FROM HARRY REID: REPORT

For her part, Klobuchar touted her record and noted her accomplishments, especially the ones she has racked up during the Trump administration.

“Even during the time of this president, 34 of the bills where I’ve been the lead Democrat have been signed into law,” Klobuchar added.

“The Five” co-host Greg Gutfeld responded to Democratic stances on abortion by accusing them of using politics to “dehumanize” babies.

Gutfeld said Democrats’ logic — likening a fetus to a clump of cells — was political more than scientific. “It shows you how politics can dehumanize,” he said.

“So, politics dictates human life now,” he added, “which is kind of what it was before the Civil War,” he said, in an apparent reference to the institution of slavery in the U.S.

His comments came after Christine Quinn, former speaker of the New York City Council, said on CNN that fetuses weren’t human beings but rather part of women’s bodies.

INCREASING CALLS FOR BRIAN SIMS TO ‘IMMEDIATELY RESIGN’ FOR HARASSING PRO-LIFERS

“When a woman gets pregnant, that is not a human being inside of her. It is part of her body, and this is about a woman having full agency and control of her body and making decisions about her body and what is part of her body with medical professionals,” she said.

Gutfeld suggested that this was “a denial of science.” “When someone’s heart stops beating, the hospital staff or bystanders in a public place will do the best to revive the heart. … When the heart is beating, you are alive,” he said.

He went on to say that while Dems often paint Republicans as science deniers, “the most anti-science party is always going to be the left.”

“They don’t believe in differences between gender, right? … Now, there’s no difference to them, to her — Christine Quinn — there’s no difference between life and death. If you decide that the heartbeat is not a vital sign of life, kill anything. Go for it,” he said of Quinn’s argument.

ABBY JOHNSON, SUBJECT OF ‘UNPLANNED,’ AMPLIFIES HER BABY’S HEARTBEAT WITH 4D ULTRASOUND IN TIMES SQUARE

Abortion has become a prominent topic leading up to the 2020 elections as some Democrats push legislation to protect abortion access — stoking criticism from President Trump and anti-abortion groups.

Trump and Republican legislators have promoted initiatives restricting access to abortion. The administration, in particular, faced criticism and legal challenges over both its so-called “gag rule” and decision to beef up protections for doctors who have “conscience” objections to performing abortions.

Republicans have also pushed a variety of restrictions, including “heartbeat” legislation which would effectively bar abortions after a doctor can hear a heartbeat.

Debate over the issue reignited on Tuesday after Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims, harassed pro-life activists standing outside a Planned Parenthood in Philadelphia. In response, pro-life leaders pledged to hold their own demonstration there on Friday and encouraged Sims to attend.

House Judiciary Committee member Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., on Wednesday accused Democrats of trying to “undermine” the president and avoid working on important issues like border, instead opting for the  “political theater” of the Mueller investigation.

“So you know, week after week in the Judiciary Committee instead of actually working on big issues like securing the border — since I’m from Arizona, it’s important to the people throughout the nation — all we’re doing is seeing political theater,” Lesko said on “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”

IMPRISONING BILL BARR IS LEFT’S NEW RALLYING CRY: ‘HAVE HIM LOCKED UP’

The House Judiciary Committee voted Wednesday to recommend holding Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted Russia report and underlying documents, after President Trump asserted executive privilege in a bid to protect those files from release.

Lesko was asked by Cavuto about the Democratic leadership’s next move. Lesko noted the absurdity of the last few weeks on the committee and said it was all about the 2020 presidential election.

“For goodness’ sake, last week we had a congressman bring fried chicken and pose in front of cameras with a ceramic chicken. This is crazy. The American people that I talk to, they want us to work together to get big issues done. Not this political theater, this is nothing more than the Democrats trying to undermine the president of the United States and it’s all about the 2020 presidential election,” Lesko said.

Lesko also criticized Mueller for not coming to a definitive conclusion in his report, leading to an even greater divide between Republicans and Democrats.

“I wish that Robert Mueller would have said, ‘OK, we’re going to refer to a grand jury for indictment,’ or, ‘We’re not.’ Instead, this whole thing has made it very confusing. A lot of different speculation. I really don’t understand why he did that,” Lesko said.

2020 presidential contender Sen. Amy Klobuchar took the stage at a Fox News Channel Town Hall on Wednesday evening in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the Minnesota Democrat sought to distinguish herself as a relative moderate among a crowded field of progressive candidates now led by Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

The one-hour Town Hall, co-anchored by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, will offer Klobuchar a chance to explain why she hasn’t embraced proposals popular with her party’s left wing, including the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, free college tuition, and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Hours before the Town Hall, Klobuchar, 58, told Fox News in an interview she wasn’t worried about Biden’s decision to run, even though he has assumed frontrunner status by most polls and fundraising metrics.

“I welcome the vice president to the race,” Klobuchar said. “I’ve worked with him for years, but I’m running my own campaign and I bring something that’s different to the race.”

Klobuchar is one of three candidates from the Midwest, along with South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio.

Buttigieg is slated to appear at Fox News Channel Town Hall on May 19, followed by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in Iowa on June 2.

“I’m running my own campaign and I bring something that’s different to the race,” Klobuchar said, adding, “I’m from the heartland. My grandpa was an iron ore miner, he worked 1,500 feet underground his whole life. I am the only candidate in the race that is a granddaughter of an iron ore miner and the daughter of a teacher and a newspaperman, the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from the state of Minnesota, and a candidate for president.”

But, Klobuchar likely will again have to respond to allegations that her “Minnesota nice” persona may be only skin-deep. In February, Klobuchar responded to multiple reports that she mistreated staffers in her Capitol Hill office by acknowledging that she’s been a “tough boss” — and did not flat-out deny a report she had thrown a binder at one point.

KLOBUCHAR DOWNPLAYS GREEN NEW DEAL AS ‘ASPIRATIONAL,’ SEEMINGLY ADMITS SHE TOSSED MAD BINDERS AT STAFF

According to a Buzzfeed News report, “one aide was accidentally hit with a flying binder, according to someone who saw it happen, though the staffer said the senator did not intend to hit anyone with the binder when she threw it.”

The outlet also cited numerous staffers claiming Klobuchar routinely sent late-night emails and berated her subordinates over minor details and missteps. Some critics have charged that the insinuations in the reports were sexist against women in managerial positions.

“I don’t know, it’s all anonymous. I will say that I’m proud of our staff,” Klobuchar told Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

“Yes, I can be a tough boss, and push people — that’s obvious,” she continued. “But, that’s because I have high expectations of myself, I have high expectations of those who work for me, and I have a high expectation for our country. My chief of staff has worked for me for six years, my state director for seven years, my campaign manager for 14 years.”

The New York Times reported in February that Klobuchar allegedly berated a staff member for failing to bring her a fork with her salad while the senator was traveling to South Carolina in 2008.

Klobuchar not only chastised the aide, but reportedly proceeded to eat the salad using a comb from her bag — then handed the comb to the aide and told him to clean it.

She later explained the bizarre story, saying she was “doing a mom thing.”

“The comb story was me, sort of doing a mom thing. I didn’t have a fork, I used a comb to eat a salad very briefly on a plane,” she said at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, in March.

Earlier this month, Klobuchar released a plan to spend $100 billion over a decade to improve mental health care and fight substance abuse, an issue she faced firsthand as the daughter of an alcoholic who struggled with addiction for years before getting sober.

Fox News’ Paul Steinhauser and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
