Mike Huckabee rips House Judiciary Committee amid contempt vote: ‘This is all pontificating’

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee accused the House Judiciary Committee of engaging in uneccessary political “theater” as it considered whether to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress.

“It produces nothing but extraordinary partisan rancor,” he told “Outnumbered” host Harris Faulkner on Wednesday. He told Faulkner that the committee’s members were “pontificating” and indicated the whole hearing should happen behind closed doors.

The best thing they could do is turn the cameras off … put only the members of Congress in the room and say ‘you guys talk about this.’ But get the cameras out of there and the microphones out of there,” he said.

He added that the hearing was a “waste of our time and money,” saying that “nobody in that room is serious about resolving an issue.”

“They’re serious about trying to present their side, make their side look good, the other side look bad.”

Huckabee’s comments came amid news that President Donald Trump claimed executive privilege — blocking the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s unredacted report and other documents — in an apparent response to Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler’s, D-N.Y., decision not to postpone a vote on contempt.

“Faced with Chairman Nadler’s blatant abuse of power, and at the Attorney General’s request, the President has no other option than to make a protective assertion of executive privilege,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement.

“The Attorney General has been transparent and accommodating throughout this process, including by releasing the no-collusion, no-conspiracy, no-obstruction Mueller Report to the public and offering to testify before the Committee,” Sanders also said.

“These attempts to work with the Committee have been flatly rejected. They didn’t like the results of the report, and now they want a redo.”

Georgia child finds $40G of meth in box of Legos: officials

Investigators with the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia said a child found something other than a messy pile of colorful plastic bits in a gift from his mom. He discovered 3.2 pounds of methamphetamine — street value, $40,000 — tucked into what appeared to be an ordinary box of Legos.

Investigator Jim Riggs with the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office told Fox News that a Statesboro, Ga., mother and a couple of her friends drove for about two hours to Charleston, S.C., where they bought the Legos from a consignment shop.

He said when the women returned from the trip and the mother gave her child the toy, there were no Legos to be found inside the container.

What there was, however, was a “big bag of meth.”

“The methamphetamine inside of the box was vacuum sealed, and that keeps it from moving around too much and also helps mask the smell,” said Riggs. He said this was the first time his office had made such a find, “especially in this quantity.”

“On top of the box itself, the Lego box was shrink-wrapped, which is the typical wrapping you find on a toy box or something coming from the factory,” Riggs said. “It was professionally done. It looked like you went to a regular retail store and purchased the box.”

He added, “Somebody took the time to cover the tracks, most definitely.”

Riggs told Fox News the child’s father called the sheriff’s office and told deputies he suspected the box contained illicit drugs.

Riggs said that once the sheriff’s office “field tested” the substance, the results came back positive for meth. The office then contacted the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in Charleston, and it was determined that the consignment shop was itself not involved.

Riggs said the owner of the consignment shop told authorities the person who sold her the Legos said they’d been bought at a local auction.

Authorities suspect the package “was delivered to an address, probably a false address, or an abandoned house,” Riggs said.

Riggs said he thinks that “when a mailman got there and determined it was a false address he took it back with him and put it in a pile of undelivered mail and a lot of times those items are put up for auction if there’s no way to return those items.”

Riggs said the women who bought the toy box were fortunate they did not encounter law enforcement on their two-hour drive back to Georgia.

“If the ladies would have been stopped on their way from Charleston to Statesboro by law enforcement, and the methamphetamine would have been found, there would have been a lot of explaining to do. It would have been a bad scene,” Riggs said.

As it stands, the mom, her friends and the consignment shop owner have all cooperated with the investigation.

And an actual culprit? “It would be near impossible to find who did this,” Riggs said, adding that “no charges have been filed at this time.”

Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson said Wednesday that internal text messages between two FBI employees should convince the intelligence community’s inspector general to investigate potential leaks in the Trump collusion investigation.

In a letter to Inspector General Michael Atkinson, Johnson, R-Wisc., and Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said the messages between Agent Peter Strzok and his lover, Lisa Page, “demonstrate the need to investigate leaks from agencies or entities other than FBI.”

Johnson said on “America’s Newsroom” that he wants answers to questions that Special Counsel Robert Mueller “did not ask.”

“Exactly what was the predicate for this entire investigation?” Johnson said to host Bill Hemmer. “There’s so many unanswered questions. I think the American people have a right to know what was happening inside the Obama administration.”

STRZOK-PAGE TEXTS SUGGEST INTEL AGENCIES LEAKED ON RUSSIA CASE: GOP SENATORS

In 2018, Strzok testified in an often-contentious hearing before the House on the content of text messages critical of President Trump.

Hemmer also asked Johnson about the House Judiciary Committee’s vote on whether to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress.

Johnson said that the House of Representatives has become “highly politicized” and that with Democrats in charge, Americans will not see “good governance,” but instead a quest for presidential impeachment.

TOP DEM CLAIMS MUELLER REPORT SHOWS RUSSIA ‘ARTIFICIALLY’ PLACED TRUMP IN WHITE HOUSE

Moments before Johnson’s interview, committee member Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said the contention that the Mueller probe was a “witch hunt” — as often described by Trump — was “nonsense.”

“Seventeen different intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia interfered with our election, attacked our democracy for the sole purpose of artificially placing someone at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.,” the Queens lawmaker said.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, countered that sentiment, calling the proceedings “all about trying to destroy Bill Barr because Democrats are nervous he’s going to get to the bottom of everything. He’s going to find out how and why [Mueller’s investigation] was started in the first place.”

Sen. Tom Cotton said on Wednesday that President Trump laid out two broad approaches to immigration reform in a meeting the previous day with 12 Republican senators.

The Arkansas Republican said on “Fox & Friends” that the president described a policy that focuses on modernizing border security and calls for a merit-based system.

“The first (approach) is immediate and urgent,” Cotton said, “it’s addressing the crisis at our southern border where we had over 100,000 illegal border crossing apprehensions last month. That’s going to be reforming our asylum laws to make sure that we don’t have people committing fraud, showing up, getting a piece of paper from some left-wing lawyer and saying some magic words that lets them into the country olly olly oxen free.”

TRUMP ORDERS ASYLUM OVERHAUL, INCLUDING NEW FEE FOR APPLICATIONS AND FASTER ADJUDICATIONS, AMID ‘SEVERE’ BORDER CRISIS

“We also had a big victory on that, by the way, yesterday in the court system,” Cotton added. “Secretary of State (Mike) Pompeo in a negotiated agreement with the Mexican government (said) that they would keep Central Americans in their countries while those asylum claims are processed. The courts finally just said that agreement can go forward, a very common sense victory. So that was the first part of the conversation.”

Cotton said shifting to a high skilled-merit-based immigration system was the second part of the conversation at Tuesday’s meeting, adding it’s something he has worked on “a lot over the last few years.”

“Today we have way too many people coming into the country who are unskilled workers or low-skilled workers and that’s driving down American wages,” Cotton said.

“What we need are more people who are doctors, or computer scientists, engineers. And that’s the direction the president wants to go as he said in the past, they laid out some broad principles yesterday. I think we had pretty widespread agreement on those principles.”

9TH CIRCUIT BREAKS WITH ANOTHER APPELLATE COURT, RULES ASYLUM APPLICANTS HAVE RIGHT TO GO BEFORE FEDERAL JUDGE

Cotton, known for his support for strict immigration measures, added that “more and more Democrats across the country are coming to recognize” that “there really is a crisis.”

“Triple the number of Democrats last month said that we have a crisis at our border as had said the previous month. Democrats in Congress may not have gotten that message yet but that kind of growing recognition among the American people that we face a crisis at the border ultimately cannot help but reach the Congress,” Cotton said.

“There are a lot of asylum laws that are well-intentioned but are being abused by people who simply want to come into the country for a chance to make more money and send that money back home. I understand the impulse, I just don’t think we as a country should indulge that.”

He then went on to say, “Our asylum laws are for people who are genuinely persecuted like Jews were in the Soviet Union or like Christians in the Middle East are today. They’re not for people who simply want to escape crime in dangerous countries.”

Cotton objected to 2020 Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden’s proposal on Tuesday to send more foreign aid to Central American countries to stop the flood of migrants into the United States.

“We’ve been giving them a lot of money for a long time, they continue to come here” Cotton said in response.

“What we need to do is protect our own sovereignty at our southern border and make sure that our laws are not being abused and that we don’t have a flood of migrants coming into our country.”

Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist said on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday that repealing Trump’s tax cuts would “make us the least competitive nation in the world.”

His comments came in response to several prominent 2020 Democrats’ strategy of running against President Trump and the Republican Party’s tax cut.

“To get rid of the Trump Republican tax cuts is to make us the least competitive nation in the world on tax policy on businesses. That is exactly where you don’t want to be,” Norquist said, while also explaining that repealing the tax cuts would impact businesses in the United States because the corporate tax rate would go back up to one of the highest in the world.

NEWT GINGRICH: LOW UNEMPLOYMENT, STRONG JOB CREATION CONFIRM STRENGTH OF TRUMP ECONOMY

“We were at 35 (percent), which was 10 points higher than communist China. And we were the highest of all the major economies in the world at 35, we took it down to 21 percent which makes us competitive, the president wanted 15 but 21 is good,” Norquist explained.

During a speech in Detroit on Monday, 2020 hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., said, “On day one we’re going to repeal that tax bill that benefited the top one percent and the biggest corporations in our country.”

At the kickoff event for former Vice President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, he insisted that the Trump tax cuts have had absolutely no impact on the middle class.

“There was a $2 trillion tax cut last year. Did you feel it?” Biden asked the crowd of Teamsters Union members. “Of course not!”

WHO’S RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT IN 2020? GROWING FIELD OF CANDIDATES JOIN RACE FOR DEMOCRATIC NOD

In South Carolina on Saturday, the 2020 Democratic presidential front-runner referenced Trump’s tax cuts again, saying, “People say ‘Well, Joe, how are you going to do all of this?’ Well, Guess what? First thing I do is going to repeal this Trump tax cut.”

When asked to respond to Harris’ claim that the tax cut benefits the top one percent and if that was accurate, Norquist answered, “That’s what the left was saying right when the bill passed. Do you remember when the tax cut was very unpopular in polling when it passed? As we got closer to April 15th of this year, and Americans actually saw the size of the tax cut they got, it became much more popular.”

“What Harris and Joe Biden are talking about taking away from people, family of four, $73,000, median income, that family would have $2,000 in higher taxes if you took away the Trump tax cuts. That’s how big the Trump tax cut was for a family of four that makes $73,000.”

Norquist then provided another example, saying, “Single parent earning $41,000. One child, single parent would cost that person $1,300 to lose the Trump tax cut. That’s how large the tax cut was. These are significant tax cuts.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R., S.C., told Sean Hannity that Robert Mueller‘s investigation is a “case closed,” but the origins of his probe need to be scrutinized in the same way President Trump was.

The FISA warrant to wiretap former Trump campaign aide Carter Page was issued on the basis of the claims made in Christopher Steele’s dossier, Graham said, and would not have been granted otherwise. Since the dossier was first revealed in 2017 alleging Trump connections to Russia, ex-British spy Steele has admitted that some of the information contained within it was unverified.

“Somebody needs to look at this like they looked at Trump,” Graham said during an appearance on “Hannity” on Tuesday.

“We have got to get to the bottom of it and make sure it never happens again.”

Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the investigation’s conclusions found that the special counsel could not generate enough evidence to confirm that President Trump colluded with Russians, but did not exonerate the president on the issue of obstruction.

TRUMP CAMPAIGN GOES ON POST-MUELLER ATTACK AGAINST ‘OBAMA-ERA DOJ AND FBI,’ WARNS ‘JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED’

KELLYANNE CONWAY, AFTER MUELLER REPORT’S RELEASE, SAYS PRESS APOLOGIES ARE IN ORDER

Both Hannity and Graham questioned why Mueller didn’t investigate further into the origins of the Steele dossier, and when exactly he became aware that there wasn’t evidence of collusion.

“What I want to know is: when did [Mueller] know there was no conspiracy with The Trump campaign and Russia as it relates to collusion of any kind?” Hannity asked. “Why was he not concerned about Hillary’s dirty Russian dossier when he had plenty of time to look into medallions and laws and taxes?

“I would think the Russian dossier would have been important to Robert Mueller,” Hannity continued.

Hannity’s questions join a chorus of other Republican commentators including former South Carolina congressman Trey Gowdy, who argued against Mueller’s collusion investigation last month.

“Clearly he didn’t have enough evidence on collusion and what I would say with respect to Mueller is if you have enough on obstruction, then charge him and let a jury of 12 decide whether or not your evidence carries the burden of persuasion,” Gowdy said last month.

Michael B. Mukasey, a former federal judge, and President George W. Bush’s attorney general, echoed similar sentiments.

“When did Bob Mueller know, or when did the people who worked with him know, that there was no coordination, which is what they were looking for?” the ex-AG told Fox News’ Bill Hemmer.

“When did they realize that and whenever they realized that shouldn’t they have told the rest of us?”

“The View” co-host Meghan McCain and “Late Night” host Seth Meyers butted heads on Wednesday morning’s show over McCain’s criticisms of Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn, who has repeatedly been accused of anti-Semitism.

It escalated to the point where McCain asked the NBC host if he was Omar’s “publicist.”

Meyers brought up McCain’s commentary on ABC’s “This Week” following the deadly synagogue shooting at the Poway, Calif., last month where she invoked the Omar’s tweets, and asserted that both Democrats and Republicans have to tackle anti-Semitism within their own parties.

SETH MEYERS CALLS TRUMP A ‘WEIRD MAN’ FOR HIS RECENT ‘LIE’ ABOUT FINLAND

“I do think it’s fairly dangerous and you brought it up after Congresswoman Omar had some death threats against her,” Meyers said. “Do you think, you know, she has obviously now stated that she needs to be more careful with her language, don’t you think other people who talk about her need to be more thoughtful as well? Or do you stand by those comments of tying her to this, her rhetoric to this synagogue shooting?”

“I don’t think I tied her to it in particular,” McCain responded. “I’m calling out what I see as anti-Semitic language and when you’re talking about — “

“But even after, you called her out even after she apologized for it,” Meyers interrupted. “I do want to establish the timeline.”

“I think that Democrats are hedging on this and I think it’s very dangerous,” McCain continued. “And I think [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer and I are in alignment about Israel’s stance in geopolitical politics. I think it is of the utmost importance and I think she is bringing her party to extremism on this. And I think we have to look to Europe and what’s happening over there and in British politics. Anti-Semitism is very common and I see it happening over there and I worry about it happening over here. I stand by everything that I’ve said and if that makes me unpopular in this room or in front of you, so be it.”

“Anti-Semitism is very common and I see it happening over there and I worry about it happening over here. I stand by everything that I’ve said and if that makes me unpopular in this room or in front of you, so be it.”

— Meghan McCain

Meyers said he found McCain’s argument “weird” about whether she was being “popular” in the room since he was trying to “find common ground.”

“Were you bothered by her language on 9/11?” McCain asked.

“I thought it was taken out of context,” Meyers answered, “and I think if you watched that whole speech — “

“Would you give President Trump the same leverage if he had said the same thing?” McCain challenged the NBC host. “I just think you have to give people the same credence.”

Meyers responded by saying President Trump was “in no position” to criticize Omar’s language on 9/11 based on his own language about 9/11. He also argued that Omar has apologized and promised to be more educated “by people who know about this” while the president hasn’t.

“It’s an interesting thing when we have two Muslim women for the first time, they do have a different perspective on things,” Meyers continued. “And I think when we talk about the idea of ‘Let’s all try to meet in the middle on things,’ we have to listen to other people’s perspective.”

“I agree, I work on ‘The View’ with Joy Behar every day,” McCain shot back. “I listen to other people’s perspectives all the time.”

When asked if there’s a way to talk about Israel without being considered anti-Semitic, McCain responded by saying don’t talk about “Jews hypnotizing the world” and “all about the Benjamins.”

“You do keep bringing up the two tweets she apologized for,” Meyers told McCain, “and I think it’s a little unfair to her, especially because — “

“Are you her publicist?” McCain reacted. “Are you her press person?”

“No,” Meyers answered. “I’m just someone who cares about the fact that there’s someone out there who is in a minority, who has had death threats against her, and I think we should all use the same language that you’re asking her to be careful about her language. And I would ask that everyone to be careful about theirs.”

A mother of two teenage daughters, who was seen in a confrontation with a Democrat state lawmaker outside a Pennsylvania abortion clinic last month, told her side of the story Tuesday night on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“I was concerned for my girls, you can see me speaking in that video,” Ashley Garecht told host Tucker Carlson. “I was genuinely trying to enter into just a dialogue with him to try to bring the situation, calm it down a little bit and say to him on film we are really here just praying for these women and babies.”

Garecht, along with her two teenage daughters and their teenage friend, say they were praying outside a southeastern Pennsylvania Planned Parenthood clinic on April 18 when Pennsylvania state Rep. Brian Sims, whose district is in Philadelphia, began confronting them “aggressively” and accusing them of protesting the clinic.

According to Garecht, Sims then briefly left, but returned with a camera and filmed Garecht and the girls. He then offered viewers money if anyone would reveal the teens’ identities.

“So, here’s the deal,” Sims is heard saying in the video. “I’ve got $100 to anybody who will identify these three, and I will donate to Planned Parenthood.”

Sims posted the video on his Facebook page, but then posted an apology Tuesday.

“‪I will fiercely protect a woman’s right to make the best choices for her health & her body, unimpeded. I also know that two wrongs don’t make a right, especially on the front lines of a civil rights battle. I can do better, and I will do better, for the women of Pennsylvania,” Sims wrote in a message accompanying the video.

Garecht told Carlson she had no intention of getting involved in an altercation.

“I never come to a clinic looking for a fight,” she said. “It’s always just with peaceful, prayerful intent. Yes, I was concerned that he said multiple times that he wanted the identities of my daughters. We were, at that point, already done. We had finished our prayers.”

“We were leaving and so when I realized he was not going to enter into any kind of productive dialogue I thought we will just continue our exit and we will just leave,” she said.

Just last week, Sims went on an eight-minute video rant, verbally harassing an elderly woman protesting outside a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic.

The state representative recorded the woman outside the same clinic in Philadelphia, which is in his district, telling her to pray at home, calling her an “old white lady” and lecturing her about her Christian beliefs on the Periscope app.

Fox News’ Caleb Parke contributed to this report.

Jerry Falwell Jr. denies report of Michael Cohen’s help sought in alleged ‘racy photo’ matter

Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. has denied asking former Trump attorney Michael Cohen to intervene in a case where someone reportedly claimed to possess racy “personal” photos that were potentially embarrassing to Falwell and his wife, as a news outlet reported Tuesday.

Falwell, during an appearance on Fox Radio’s “The Todd Starnes Show,” insisted that “no compromising or embarrassing photos” of himself existed.

“While we have a long-standing friendship with Michael Cohen, we never engaged or paid Cohen to represent us in any legal or other professional capacity, and Cohen did not ever resolve any legal matter on our behalf,” Falwell told host Todd Starnes. “This report is not accurate.”

Reuters had reported that it obtained a taped conversation between Cohen and comedian Tom Arnold, in which Cohen reportedly says Falwell asked him to intervene in a situation where someone possessed the type of photos that would typically be kept “between husband and wife.”

A source “familiar with Cohen’s thinking” told Reuters that the photos were destroyed after Cohen intervened on Falwell’s behalf. It was also reported that Falwell had sought Cohen’s assistance months before Falwell endorsed Donald Trump for president in 2016.

Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang said Tuesday that recently released economic numbers do not reflect the situation that many Americans deal with every day.

“There have certainly been some rosy numbers that have come out recently, but they do not reflect the day-to-day situation of many Americans around the country,” Yang said on “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

DEM 2020 CANDIDATE ANDREW YANG STANDS BY ‘FREEDOM DIVIDEND’

The entrepreneur described the struggles that many Americans are facing daily and argued the numbers that President Trump is touting don’t necessarily tell the entire story.

“And if you look at numbers that reflect financial health of most Americans, 78 percent of Americans say they are living paycheck to paycheck, 40 percent could not afford an unexpected $400 bill,” Yang said. “And Donald Trump when he was running as a candidate talked how misleading the headline unemployment number is which does not reflect labor force participation at a multi-decade low, the same levels as Ecuador and Costa Rica. Or underemployment which is rampant. Almost 1 out of 2 graduates are in a job that does not require a degree.”

The Trump administration has been touting recent economic numbers.

The recently published April jobs report showed that the American economy added 263,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent, the lowest since 1969.

Yang criticized the Trump adminsitration’s tax cut, saying that it benefits the wrong people.

“There is a lot of population that is struggling in the economy that has been charged up somewhat by a tax cut — most of which the benefits went to shareholders and stockholders instead of workers,” Yang said.
