Mollie Hemingway: Democrats, not Trump, are having the hard time accepting election results

The Federalist’s senior editor Mollie Hemingway said Monday that while Democrats are concerned that President Trump won’t accept defeat in the 2020 election, the people actually having trouble accepting election results seem to be Democrats.

Hemingway addressed Hillary Clinton’s comments that Trump and the Russians “stole” the 2016 presidential election from her on “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

“Really stunning to hear her say that she ran a good campaign and that the Russians stole it from her. I think somebody needs to sit down and have a frank conversation about the fact she did lose. She did not run a great campaign and that the Russians did not steal that election. To have so much commentary about how… people are worried Donald Trump won’t accept the results of the next rounds of elections, we really have had a problem with people not accepting results of the 2016 election, and that is on the Democratic side,” Hemingway said.

PELOSI: TRUMP MIGHT NOT ACCEPT DEFEAT IN 2020

Clinton made her comments over the weekend in Los Angeles.

“You can run the best campaign, you can even become the nominee, and you can have the election stolen from you,” Clinton said.

Hemingway added that other candidates have been following Clinton’s lead.

“It also is filtering down to other races. You saw, Stacey Abrams still says she’s not conceding defeat even though she lost by tens of thousands of votes and she said we no longer need to concede. I think it would be good to hold some people accountable. I haven’t even seen anybody fact-checking Stacey Abrams on this issue,” Hemingway said of the Georgia gubernatorial candidate.

Fox News digital politics editor Chris Stirewalt was more optimistic about the eventual 2020 presidential outcome.

“I have every expectation that if this is a close election, whether it’s Democrat or Republican, the lawyers will be involved and it will be acrimonious. We have been there before. The 2000 election was a thing,” Stirewalt said, referencing the drawn-out fight over Florida ballots in the Bush-Gore race.

“I think to Molly’s point, I think to the larger issue, we are having a hard time and it’s a little bit in both parties, we don’t trust the gatekeepers, we don’t trust the referees… We don’t have the confidence that people will accept outcomes. But, I have every confidence we will have a decisive election and that the loser will lose and the winner will win.”

Fox News correspondent Ellison Barber reported from the Venezuela-Colombia border Monday about the flight of migrants, what the United Nations has called the largest exodus of people in South America’s modern history.

“They do it despite the danger,” Barber said on “Shepard Smith Reporting.” “It’s worth the risk to get out of Venezuela.”

The country’s instability has been intensifying for years.

GUNFIRE HEARD NEAR VENEZUELA-COLOMBIA BORDER AS REFUGEES FLEE POLITICAL CRISIS

Last week, flanked by several heavily armed soldiers, the U.S.-recognized president of Venezuela, Juan Guaido, and his mentor, Leopoldo Lopez, attempted to spark a military rebellion and force disputed leader Nicolas Maduro out of office.

After a full-day of in-fighting in the streets of Caracas – which at one point saw an armored vehicle plow into a crowd in an incident broadcast on live TV throughout the world – the coup d’état attempt fell flat.

At least five people were killed in the street clashes.

Over two million Venezuelans have fled their nation’s hyperinflation, food and medical shortages over the last three years, according to the United Nations.

Many have landed in neighboring Colombia after making long treks by foot.

The migrants come on wheelchairs, for instance, Barber reported, and many runaways carry all of their belongings.

The illegal treks to Colombia are up hills and through rocky roads.

The owner of Maximum Security, the first horse ever disqualified from the Kentucky Derby for interference after crossing the finish line first, told Fox News on Monday evening that he would “file a lawsuit in the appropriate jurisdiction” after the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) denied his appeal of the Churchill Downs stewards’ decision.

Gary West told “The Story with Martha MacCallum” that he “expected” the ruling from the KHRC, which ruled that the stewards’ decision was not subject to appeal and denied a request to stay the disqualification ruling pending appeal.

Maximum Security finished Saturday’s race a length and three-quarters ahead of longshot Country House on a sloppy track. However, after two jockeys filed objections, the race stewards determined that Maximum Security had impeded the paths of several horses in the race. The disqualification elevated Country House to the winner’s circle.

On Monday, West blamed fellow competitor Will to Win, which ran from the No. 1 post position, for causing the chaos that saw Maximum Security penalized.

“I think when it’s all said and done and all the evidence is put on display, frame by frame in slow motion, you will find that the 1 horse [Will to Win] actually caused the infraction, not our horse,” he said. “And … I believe it will eventually show that if the 1 horse would have finished ahead of our horse, we would have had every right in the world to claim an objection against the 1 horse.”

West also blamed Derby organizers for staging the race with 20 horses in the field as opposed to the 14 seen in other prominent races.

“The reason that they have 20 horses instead of 14, like they do in every other major race in America, including the Kentucky Oaks and all the Breeders Cup races, which are kind of the gold standard races in America, is because … Churchill Downs makes more money on the races by having 20 horses in the race than by having 14 horses in the race,” West said. “And, what I think they are doing and what they have done is, they are putting profits ahead of the lives of both horses and people, and I don’t think that’s right.”

The only other Derby disqualification took place in 1968 when first-place finisher Dancer’s Image tested positive for a prohibited medication days after the race.

Former Clinton pollster Doug Schoen warned Democrats Monday against failing to “move on” from the conclusions of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report.

Schoen cited the political hit Republicans took in the late 1990s after bringing impeachment proceedings against then-President Bill Clinton.

“I’d also caution my fellow Democrats, that, like what happened to Republicans in ’98 when they pushed impeachment against the popular will, the Democrats themselves — yes, let’s hear from Bob Mueller, then let’s move on,” Schoen said on “Outnumbered Overtime.”

But, Schoen also said he wanted to know Mueller’s thoughts on what Attorney General William Barr said about his report.

He also said Mueller should react to the hundreds of former prosecutors who claimed President Trump would have been indicted had he not been commander-in-chief.

HUNDREDS OF EX-PROSECUTORS CLAIM TRUMP WOULD HAVE BEEN INDICTED IF NOT PRESIDENT

“Each of us believes that the conduct of President Trump described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would, in the case of any other person not covered by the Office of Legal Counsel policy against indicting a sitting President, result in multiple felony charges for obstruction of justice,” a statement from the prosecutors read.

Schoen said he agreed with the sentiments of some Republicans who wanted to know more about the origins of the Russia collusion probe.

“I would like to know how this all began,” Schoen said. “We know the [Steele] dossier is a phony.”

Schoen also said there was “no basis” to serve a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

2020 Democrat Marianne Williamson said Monday that her presidential campaign features a nonpartisan conversation that she hopes will help Americans “re-embrace” democratic values and “the statement of principle in our Declaration of Independence.”

Williamson, a self-help author and lecturer, said on the Fox News Rundown podcast that “we have swerved away from [democratic] principles” and “the deep humanitarian values and principles that make any human endeavor meaningful.”

“There is a conversation that I am having in my campaign that I don’t feel is being had elsewhere, and it’s a conversation that I believe represents the deepest underpinnings of our democracy,” Williamson said.

She told host Chris Foster her campaign’s discussion has nothing to do with being “left or right.”

“I believe we have been swerving, for the last 40 years, in a direction that has not only corrupted our government but has hijacked our values system.”

In a message released last year, Williamson said that America has not been “functioning as a government of the people, by the people and for the people.”

Williamson previously ran unsuccessfully for Congress in California in the 2014 blanket primary to replace outgoing Rep. Henry Waxman, a Democrat.

Fox Business’ Kennedy took Democrats to task Monday for not giving President Trump the credit he deserves for the booming economy while explaining the commander-in-chief’s stagnant poll numbers.

“I think it’s laughable,” Kennedy said, reacting to Democrats insisting former President Obama get credit for the economic comeback while co-hosting “The Five.”

“If Hillary Clinton were president, right now, there’s no way Cory Booker would be on TV talking about Obama’s economy because that would be seen as totally sexist. If any other president were enjoying these numbers, they would be considered the greatest president of the modern era,” Kennedy said.

LARRY KUDLOW FIRES BACK AT CORY BOOKER’S OBAMA RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ECONOMY CLAIM

Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., a 2020 White House candidate, made the case for Obama on Sunday.

“I love Trump is taking credit for a recovery that started under Obama,” Booker said on CNN.

The recently published April jobs report showed that the American economy added 263,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate fell to 3.6 percent, the lowest since 1969.

Meanwhile, the president’s poll numbers have remained largely unchanged, something Kennedy said will not hurt the president in the long term.

“He doesn’t help himself. He has a lot of unforced digital errors,” Kennedy said, referencing the president’s Twitter presence. But, she also argued the voters who disliked Trump do like how the economy has been helping them.

“What’s going to happen is you have to have to measure how people feel about where they are right now versus how they feel about the president. A lot of people, including people in the middle class, some low-income earners, they feel a lot better than where they were at in 2016. They don’t like the president, but they can probably still make four more years if that means four more years of economic growth if the Trump administration can make that argument,” Kennedy said.

The host of Fox Business’ “Kennedy” said voters will overlook the Trump’s negative aspects when measured against policies a Democrat would implement in the White House.

“It’s really tough selling a whole basket of deplorable socialist policies that are going to cost American workers $60,000 per household if they implement any of these when people are enjoying increased wages, increased consumer confidence,” Kennedy said.

House Judiciary Committee ranking member Doug Collins ripped Democrats on Monday for pushing forward in demanding that Special Counsel Robert Mueller testify before Congress about his investigation into President Trump.

Mueller’s report showed that investigators did not find proof of a conspiracy between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia, but revealed an array of controversial actions by the president that were examined as part of the investigation’s obstruction inquiry.

Collins, R-Ga., said that if he testifies, Mueller will say there “was no collusion [and] no charged obstruction.”

“I think it’s amazing to me, here, how quickly the Democrats want to go down a path they know they can’t go on just to have press releases – just to tar and sort of throw dirt at a president that they don’t like.”

WILL MUELLER TESTIFY? HOUSE DEMS IN TALKS FOR HEARING WITH SPECIAL COUNSEL, SOURCE CONFIRMS

He added that Democrats also have been moving toward a contempt proceeding against Attorney General William Barr in an “unprecedented” manner.

Collins said Democrats have been threatening contempt charges against Barr exponentially quicker than Republicans did against former Attorney General Eric Holder.

In 2012, the GOP-led House voted to hold Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to provide key information about a failed gun-running sting called Operation Fast and Furious.

Collins said Democrats likely have been concerned about the “very liberal candidates” in the 2020 presidential field “who don’t match with middle America” and therefore have been trying to tarnish Trump.

“The Democrats are simply going after the president, frankly, for doing a good job,” Collins said. “It is simply them chasing an election they lost in 2016.”

Collins added that if Mueller does testify, he will ask the onetime FBI director about the debate surrounding the “basis” of his investigation into Trump.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday that Sen. Cory Booker was wrong to claim that President Trump is taking credit for an economic boom started by former President Barack Obama.

Booker, D-N.J., said over the weekend that Trump continues to take credit for economic milestones that should instead be credited to Obama.

“We had a tax plan [in 2018] that was all about giving the wealthiest people more of a break,” Booker, also a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, said on CNN.

Gingrich, R-Ga., said on “America’s Newsroom” that Booker “keeps repeating rhetoric that’s false,” adding that “anybody who’s serious knows that none of [the recovery] had anything to do with Barack Obama.”

He said Trump has bested Obama-era GDP growth numbers every quarter since taking office, and that American manufacturing and wage growth has increased “dramatically.”

He added that many top Democrats instead want to push forward on the “high taxes, big regulations [and] anti-business attitudes” that led to a “very weak economy” in the past.

Top Trump adviser Larry Kudlow echoed Gingrich in blasting Booker’s claims.

“I’m just going to use the damn facts,” Kudlow said Sunday on Fox News.

Top Border Patrol official: Facilities not ‘designed to handle’ heavy flow of immigrants

A top border patrol official said Monday on “Fox & Friends” that facilities intended to house migrants and illegal immigrant detainees were “not designed to handle [the] type of flow” being seen along the Mexican border.

“This is a challenge unlike any we’ve ever faced before,” U.S. Border Patrol chief of law enforcement operations Brian Hastings said.

“We’re up to 474,000 arrests so far this fiscal year,” he added.

Hastings said that the prevalence of unaccompanied alien minors and family units adds to the stress the facilities are facing.

He said that as the situation at the border continues, the border patrol has had to release “processed, noncriminal family units” into the public.

“With outdated laws, we simply cannot apply a consequence” to those people, he said.

Late last month, President Trump called for a sweeping overhaul to the asylum system, floating a new application fee for asylum seekers.

Border agents made more than 100,000 arrests or denials of entry in March — the highest figure in 12 years, according to recent Fox News reporting.

The White House said in an April memo that “out of every 100 aliens subject to expedited removal who claim a fear of persecution, only about 12 will ultimately be granted asylum.”

Former US drug czar says national focus on opioid epidemic is overlooking real culprit

William Bennett, the nation’s first drug czar, said Monday that the debate about the opioid overdose epidemic wrongly focuses on prescription drugs.

While the government’s opioid crackdown has involved reducing the supply of legal opioids and reducing painkiller prescription rates, black market opioids such as illicit fentanyl and heroin actually have been the driving force of the epidemic in recent years, said Bennett during an interview on “Fox & Friends.”

“The nature of the problem has changed in the last two or three years,” said Bennett, who served as Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President George H. W. Bush. “It’s now fentanyl, it’s now heroin” that account for most of the overdoses.

A key reason, Bennett said, is that fentanyl and heroin are cheaper than prescription drugs.

AS DOCTORS TAPER OR END OPIOID PRESCRIPTIONS, MANY PATIENTS DRIVEN TO DESPAIR, SUICIDE

“When I was up in New Hampshire, they told me you [can pay] $10 for a pill –to get an Oxycontin, [but] two bucks to get heroin, three bucks to get fentanyl.”

“And that’s the nature of the problem,” Bennett said. “You talk to law enforcement people that will tell you they haven’t seen a lot of the other stuff – OxyContin — on the street but they’re loaded with these cases of fentanyl.”

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report last week said that about 70,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2017. Nearly 48,000 involved at least one type of opioid, roughly 30,000 involved fentanyl or some other kind of synthetic opioid, 15,500 involved heroin, and 14,500 involved prescription opioid painkillers. Other government data have indicated that many people who overdosed on prescription opioids stole them or obtained them from the person to whom they were prescribed.

Bennett said he is glad to see pharmaceutical companies prosecuted if they engaged in illegal activities – such as lying about the addictive properties of some painkillers — in order to boost sales of prescription opioids.

Just last week, in the latest of a series of actions against pharmaceutical companies, the founder of a highly addictive legal fentanyl spray was convicted on charges related to paying doctors millions in bribes to prescribe the drug.

The founder, John Kapoor, the 76-year-old former chairman of Insys Therapeutics, was found guilty of racketeering conspiracy after 15 days of jury deliberations.

TOUGH NEW OPIOID POLICIES LEAVE SOME CANCER AND POST-SURGERY PATIENTS WITHOUT PAINKILLERS

“They should be investigated and convicted if they committed a crime,” Bennett said, adding, “What I am concerned about is the emphasis [is] so much on these pharma companies – on OxyContin and Oxycodone—yes, they can be dangerous, yes, people have gotten addicted.”

“But most of the deaths that come from those drugs and where you see deaths from OxyContin, and Oxycodone, prescription drugs, it’s because of illegal diversion.”

The federal crackdown on legal opioids has led many prescribers to forcibly taper down or altogether abandon chronic pain patients who have in many cases responsibly taken painkillers for years in order to function.

Many states have implemented strict regulations as a result of a 2016 CDC guideline on opioid prescribing.

The CDC has said often that the guideline was not meant to be enforced, and that it was issued to help primary care physicians prescribing opioids to a first-time user.

“Most people, the vast majority of the people, who are prescribed these [painkillers] do not abuse them,” Bennett said. “The CDC had to come back and issue another kind of guidance, saying a lot of people who need pain pills are not getting them.”

Both the CDC and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned doctors last month not to abruptly stop prescribing opioid painkillers to patients who are taking them for chronic debilitating pain, generally lasting more than three months.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
