Karl Rove: Impeachment push puts Dems at odds with independents before 2020

Fox News political contributor Karl Rove said Thursday that if Democrats continue pushing impeachment proceedings for President Trump, they could alienate a vital voting demographic they need to capture in 2020.

“It puts them at odds with the independents who are going to end up deciding the 2020 election,” Rove said while appearing on “The Daily Briefing.”

“What happens if we have 12 or 13 months and the Democrats talk about investigation and impeachment and the support for that among independents continues to drop?” he asked.

Some Democrats have reacted to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, released in April, by calling for impeachment proceedings. Scrutiny around that report seemed to mount as Attorney General William Barr testified before the Senate on Wednesday, and many suggested Barr refused to act as an impartial arbiter in the matter.

MUELLER REPORT IGNITES NEW DEM BATTLE OVER IMPEACHMENT

Although some Democrats have called for impeachment, polling has revealed that independents largely oppose that. Rove cited post-Mueller report polls which showed both a drop in independents’ support for impeachment and more independent opposition to such a move.

Rove also told Fox News host Dana Perino that Trump should avoid the issue and focus on his economic record. “Let the Democrats spend the time talking about an investigation and impeachment,” he said.

“He doesn’t need to spend a lot of time talking about that. There are lots of natural allies and increasingly a lot of natural resistance among independents.”

Democrats have also faced resistance within their own party as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., repeatedly threw cold water on the idea. “We’re not there yet,” she said in April.

Florida Republican Rep. Mike Waltz weighed in Thursday on the possibility of U.S. military action in Venezuela, saying it would take the form of “a supporting” role and “a logistics effort.”

Waltz, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, made the comment on “America’s Newsroom,” a day after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told FOX Business that military action is on the table in Venezuela.

“The president has been crystal clear and incredibly consistent: Military action is possible if that’s what’s required, that’s what the United States will do,” Pompeo told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo on Wednesday.

He added, “We’re trying to do everything we can to avoid violence.”

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION DECLARES SUPPORT FOR VENEZUELA UPRISING AGAINST MADURO: ‘WE ARE WITH YOU!’

Meanwhile, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó has said he and his supporters are determined to recover their freedom; on Thursday he said he hoped public employees would stage strikes to put pressure on embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

Guaidó’s push for a general strike and for Venezuelans to remain in the streets – his latest moves in a fledgling attempt to drive Maduro from power — came a day after clashes between his forces and anti-government protesters left one woman dead and dozens injured.

On Thursday, Waltz said the U.S. military is now “looking at all options.”

“They’re looking at what assets they have in the region,” said Waltz, adding, “We’ve had special forces next door in Colombia for many years training the Colombian Army.”

He said the military is considering how to “pre-position ships in the region” and assist with humanitarian supplies, and is communicating with allies.

“At the end of the day, this needs to be a coalition effort,” said Waltz.

“The U.N. is a non-starter because of the Russia and China veto. I think we look to the OAS, the Organization of American States, 34 nations, and keep in mind, 50 nations have recognized the Guaidó regime.”

He added, “If we’re putting boots on the ground, they need to be regional troops and it needs to be a humanitarian effort that they are protecting.”

When asked if he thinks the window of opportunity to get Maduro out the country has passed, Waltz said: “I don’t think it’s passed and what’s important, it’s not that Maduro is stubborn, Maduro’s dictatorship is crumbling.

“What’s propping it up is the Cubans, and I’ve seen estimates ranging anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000 Cuban intelligence and security forces are on the ground. And it’s important to keep saying: ‘But why does this matter? Why does this matter to Americans and to Floridians?’”

He went on to offer a twofold explanation: “One, you have a massive refugee crisis that I think has been underreported. It’s approaching the size of what’s happened in Syria. Three million refugees are flowing into neighboring countries and destabilizing the region; meanwhile they’re going to start destabilizing Central America as well, and that will affect the United States.”

“Secondly, we have to look at what happens if Maduro doesn’t go. He has opened the door to the Chinese, he’s opened the door to the Russians. The Cubans are already there in a big way.”

“If Maduro does go,” he speculated, “I think the Castro regime is not far to follow because they shifted the Cuban regime’s dependence from the Soviet Union to Venezuela and [Hugo] Chávez, Maduro’s predecessor, a long time ago. So there’s a lot at stake here.”

ILHAN OMAR FACES BACKLASH AFTER COMPLAINING ABOUT US ‘BULLYING’ IN VENEZUELA

On “America’s Newsroom,” Waltz also criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar’s argument that President Trump’s administration could be partly to blame for the ongoing turmoil in Venezuela through “bullying” and sanctions.

“A lot of the policies that we have put in place have kind of helped lead the devastation in Venezuela and we have sort of set the stage for where we are arriving today,” Omar, D-Minn., told PBS’ “Democracy Now!” on Wednesday. “This particular bullying and the use of sanctions to eventually intervene and make regime change really does not help the people of countries like Venezuela. and it certainly does not help and is not in the interest of the United States.”

Waltz’s retort? “That’s nuts. One word, that is crazy.

“I would invite her to go down to the border and go down to Venezuela where you have rolling blackouts, people are literally starving, in formerly the richest country in South America, sitting on the world’s largest oil reserves. “And it’s not because they lack resources, it’s the absolute corruption of socialism, and it’s because that flies in the face of her and others’ narrative that that’s why they’re looking for excuses and to point the finger at others. But this is an absolute failure of socialism.”

Democrats are decrying Attorney General William Barr be charged with perjury, with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi asserting that Barr lied to Congress during a House Appropriations Committee hearing in April.

Pelosi apparently told Rep. Charlie Crist, D-Fla. in a closed-door meeting, “We saw [Barr] commit a crime when he answered your question,” referring to when Barr was asked if Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller or his team would have any objections to the summary presented by Barr of the Russia probe findings, according to a report by Politico.

DOJ CALLS OUT DEMS FOR IGNORING LESS-REDACTED MUELLER REPORT, SERVING SUBPOENA INSTEAD

“Bill Barr explained it differently yesterday and he said that he didn’t feel that Robert Mueller had any dispute with the conclusions that were drawn in the letter that he drafted but with some of the process of how it went out,” Fox News host Martha MacCallum said Thursday on “America’s Newsroom.”

She added that Mueller: “would have liked to have seen more of those summaries come out. It seems like a very fine point of distinction.”

Several Democratic lawmakers, as well as 10 2020 presidential candidates, are also calling for Barr to step down from his position.

MacCallum thinks the Democratic outrage is misplaced, while also pointing to Barr’s admission that he was surprised that Mueller’s investigation did not clearly yield any charges of obstruction of justice against President Trump despite a two-year investigation.

“I think that there’s an enormous amount of frustration that this process did not produce what Democrats thought it should and now they’ve got to figure out what their next move is,” she said.

Barr was a no-show on Thursday as the House Judiciary Committee gathered for a second hearing to discuss the Mueller report. He refused to attend the hearing after Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y. insisted committee lawyers be allowed to question him instead of the usual members.

Rabbi wounded in synagogue shooting urges Trump to bring ‘moment of silence’ back to schools

The heroic rabbi who was wounded in the California synagogue shooting last Saturday said President Trump is supportive of reintroducing a “moment of silence” back into public schools.

Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who wasn’t on the official schedule, was invited by Trump to the podium at the service for the National Day of Prayer. As Trump stated: “There was no one who expressed the horror and beauty of what you represent better than you did.”

Goldstein, with bandages on his hands, recalled the horrific moment the shooter entered his synagogue. And he said one thing that will help the healing is bringing back the moment of silence in school.

“Children [are] not growing up with values that our Founding Fathers started,” he said. “Something seems fundamentally wrong when there’s a generation of kids growing up doing what they’re doing.”

One person died in the shooting.

“Just five days ago, on Saturday morning, I faced evil in the worst darkness of all time right in our own house of worship, right at Chabad of Poway,” Goldstein said to the faith leaders gathered in the Rose Garden. “I faced him and I had to make a decision: Do I run and hide or do I stand tall and fight and protect all those that are there?”

DR. RONNIE FLOYD: ‘OUR NATION NEEDS PRAYER TODAY MORE THAN EVER BEFORE’

He recalled the words of his Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, who taught him “the way we react to darkness is with light.”

“It was that moment that I made a decision, that no matter what happens to me I was going to save as many people as possible. I should’ve been dead by now based on the rule of statistics. I was in the line of fire, bullets flying all the way, my fingers got blown off, but I did not stop. The rebbe taught me, as a soldier of God, you need to stand tall and stand fast do what it takes to change the world.”

TRUMP: ‘VIOLENCE AND TERRORISM AGAINST PEOPLE OF ALL FAITHS MUST END’

“My life has changed forever,” he continued, “but it changed so that I can make change, and that I can help others learn how to be strong and mighty and tall. Many have asked me, ‘Rabbi, where do we go from here? How do we prevent this?'”

“My response is what the Rebbe [said] when President Ronald Reagan was shot. The Rebbe said we need to go back to the basics and introduce a Moment of Silence in all public schools,” the rabbi said to applause. “So that children from early childhood on can recognize that there is more good to the world, that they are valuable, there is accountability and every human being is created in God’s image. If something good will come out of this terrible, terrible horrific event, let us bring back a Moment of Silence to our public school system … ”

The rabbi ended by thanking Trump for his response as a “mensch par excellence.”

Goldstein turned to Trump: “Mr. President when you called me I was at home weeping. You were the first person who began my healing. You heal people in their worst of times and I’m so grateful for that. You have helped me bring great honor to Mrs. Lori Kaye…”

Trump called him a “great man” with “beautiful words.”

“He said this is my greatest moment in life,” Trump added. ” To go from darkness to the White House.”

Goldstein was accompanied by congregants and fellow heroes of the attack, Oscar Stewart, the combat veteran who chased the shooter from the synagogue; and Jonathan Morales, the off-duty border-patrol agent who took up the chase and managed to shoot the attacker’s car several times.

The president asked both men to share a few words. Like his rabbi, Morales quoted the Rebbe and asked his audience to increase in mitzvah observance and acts of goodness and kindness.

Following the rabbi’s emotional remarks, the president thanked him, saying that “truly your courage and grace and devotion touches every heart and soul in America.”

Sarah Sanders: Russia investigation is over, ‘time for Democrats to move on’

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders assailed Democrats on Thursday for “outrageous questioning” of Attorney General Wiliam Barr at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday.

Appearing on “America’s Newsroom,” Sanders characterized Democrats as obsessed with finding collusion or obstruction by President Trump despite Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s lengthy investigation and report.

“We’ve been transparent this entire process,” Sanders said. “We’ve put forward dozens of people to talk with the special counsel, 1.4 million pages of documents, we’ve been fully transparent.”

“This thing is over,” she said. “It’s time for Democrats to move on. They can’t continue to drag this thing out and continue to put the American people through this. Look, there was no collusion, there was no obstruction. Now they need to come together and work with the president to actually fix real problems.

“They’ve shown they aren’t capable of working with us on immigration, but maybe they could help on infrastructure or lowering prescription drugs.”

Barr skipped a House hearing Thursday on Mueller’s Trump-Russia report, escalating an already acrimonious battle between Democrats and the president’s Justice Department. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Barr had already lied to Congress in other testimony and called that a “crime.”

Barr’s decision to avoid the hearing, made after a disagreement with the House Judiciary Committee over questioning, came the day after the department also missed the committee’s deadline to provide it with a full, unredacted version of Mueller’s report and its underlying evidence. In all, it’s likely to prompt a vote on holding Barr in contempt and possibly the issuance of subpoenas, bringing House Democrats and the Trump administration closer to a prolonged battle in court.

Democrats convened a short hearing that included an empty chair with a place card set for Barr. Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler of New York said that if the attorney general doesn’t provide the committee “with the information it demands and the respect that it deserves, Mr. Barr’s moment of accountability will come soon enough.”

Shortly afterward, Pelosi escalated the tensions further. In a possible reference to the attorney general’s testimony earlier this month, Pelosi said Barr “was not telling the truth to the Congress of the United States — that’s a crime.”

Sanders said on “America’s Newsroom” that “Democrats embarrassed themselves yesterday.”

“The attorney general sat for five hours yesterday, and answered every question put in front of him,” Sanders said. “He was willing to sit down again with the House…the Democrats have changed the rules in the middle of the game. They took a vote yesterday, a special vote in order to allow staff to question the attorney general. He is a cabinet member for the president of the United States. And this is a straightforward oversight hearing in which members of Congress should be able to ask those questions.”

Gaetz took to Twitter to admonish Nadler’s mic-pull tweeting “Judiciary Democrats say AG Barr is “terrified.” Yesterday he testified for over five hours in an open hearing. Today, they cut off my microphone. #WhoIsTerrified?”

Democrats put their own twist on Barr’s no-show, with Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn bringing a bucket of KFC to the hearing and placing it beside Barr’s empty seat.

Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano said that he would have advised Attorney General William Barr to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, adding that he thinks Barr has “nothing to hide.”

Napolitano made the comments on “Fox & Friends” on Thursday, hours before Barr skipped the House hearing — even as the Democrats who lead the committee vowed to hold the hearing anyway, and threatened a possible contempt citation against Barr.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y, gaveled a hearing Thursday with an empty chair the day after Barr endured questioning from the Senate Judiciary Committee, his first appearance before Congress since the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report.

A key sticking point was that Nadler wanted to have House Judiciary Committee staff — rather than members of Congress — question Barr on his handling of Mueller’s report. Barr reportedly wanted only lawmakers to do the questioning and Department of Justice officials said members should conduct the inquiry.

BARR REVEALS TENSIONS WITH MUELLER TEAM OVER RUSSIA PROBE CONCLUSION, OBSTRUCTION PUNT

“My view is the lawyers would ask better questions than the politicians,” Napolitano said on Thursday.

“There’s a follow up in the give and take which we didn’t hear yesterday, which good lawyers, trained in cross-examination, know how to do. The best lawyer in that room (is) the attorney general. He really shouldn’t have anything to fear.”

Napolitano then advised Barr to “go” to the House hearing, but acknowledged, “I guess it’s too late to do it now.”

“Let anybody ask you the questions you want,” Napolitano said as he explained the advice he would offer Barr. “In your view, you have nothing to hide. They will ask far better questions than the politicians did.”

Democratic Caucus chairman Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said Wednesday that Democrats “plan on subpoenaing” Barr “if he decides not to show up.”

Several top Democrats, including Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, have called for Barr’s resignation in the wake of his Senate testimony on Wednesday. The hearing covered everything from Barr’s decision not to pursue an obstruction case against President Trump to process delays in getting a redacted version of Mueller’s report to the public to Mueller’s apparent concerns about how Barr initially relayed his findings to Congress.

On Capitol Hill on Wednesday Sen. Harris, D-Calif., said: “No prosecutor worth her salt would make a decision about whether the president of the United States was involved in an obstruction of justice without reviewing the evidence.”

Harris added that she thinks that Barr should resign.

BARR ACCUSES DEMS OF USING CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS AS ‘POLITICAL WEAPON’ AS HEARING TENSIONS FLARE

“She should know better,” said Napolitano in response. “She is the former attorney general of the state of California. An enormous job. She was the second most important attorney general position in terms of numbers of prosecutions managed in the country. She couldn’t possibly look at all the evidence and all the prosecutions.”

“You have 44 FBI agents and 19 lawyers supervised by Bob Mueller. You trust that when they come to a conclusion, they have eyeballed all the evidence.”

He added: “It would be absurd for Bill Barr to have examined everything.”

Napolitano went on to say that some of the questions during Wednesday’s Senate hearing were “out of line.”

“He wouldn’t get questions like that lawyer to lawyer. Which is why I argue the attorney general should go and let those lawyers ask him questions and we’ll learn more than we learned yesterday,” Napolitano added.

“If you think this was a witch-hunt, I don’t think your mind was changed yesterday. If you think the president committed obstruction of justice (and) Bill Barr wouldn’t let Bob Mueller indict him, I don’t think your mind was changed yesterday.”

Napolitano said, “the real show” will come when Mueller testifies on Capitol Hill, if it ever comes to pass.

Mike Huckabee says Dems have ‘got nothing’ on Barr, were ‘rude and disrespectful’

Democrats have “got nothing” in trying to discredit Attorney General William Barr on the Mueller report, former Republican presidential candidate and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Wednesday.

“They are like people who show up at the barbecue restaurant at closing time and all the meat is gone,” Huckabee said on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

“So, what they are left to do is just lick the bones, gnaw on them a little bit and suck the barbecue sauce out of the bottle. They have nothing else to do,” Huckabee told host Laura Ingraham.

Barr testified Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he addressed his decision not to pursue an obstruction case against President Trump and the delay in the release of the redacted version of Mueller’s report on his Russia investigation.

BARR: MUELLER REPORT IS DONE. WE NEED TO STOP USING DOJ AS ‘POLITICAL WEAPON’

During the hearing, several Democrats called on Barr to resign, including Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif. Harris is seeking her party’s 2020 presidential nomination.

Huckabee described the Democrats’ treatment of Barr as “rude and disrespectful.”

“And I think in a way, I almost felt sorry watching them. But then I didn’t because [they were] so rude and disrespectful of the attorney general. And how he maintained his composure and didn’t crawl across the table and go after a few of them as a testament to diplomacy, grace and being a gentleman,” Huckabee said.

Huckabee also reacted to a New York Times op-ed by former FBI Director James Comey.

In a piece titled “How Trump Co-Opts Leaders Like Bill Barr,” Comey wrote, “Mr. Trump eats your soul in small bites.”

Huckabee disagreed with Comey and warned that the former FBI director may soon face troubles of his own.

“First of all, he’s dead wrong about Donald Trump. Donald Trump does not eat people’s soul in small bites,” Huckabee said. “He takes it in one great big chomp and it’s over and he’s done with it. It is one of the reasons he’s president because he does know how to take on an adversary. Jim Comey has a lot of explaining to do.”

Radio host Rush Limbaugh ripped Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii Wednesday over her treatment of Attorney General William Barr during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the Mueller report, calling her “ignorant” and “a liar.”’

Limbaugh said Hirono mischaracterized Barr’s work and — like Sen. Lindsey Graham– accused the senator of “slandering” his integrity. “He didn’t change anything in the Mueller report,” Limbaugh said on his radio show.

BARR: MUELLER REPORT IS DONE. WE NEED TO STOP USING DOJ AS ‘POLITICAL WEAPON’

Barr’s testimony Wednesday was wide-ranging. It covered his decision not to pursue an obstruction case against President Trump and the delay in the release of the redacted version of the report.

Hirono accused Barr of lying to Congress and said he should resign.

“Mr. Barr, now the American people know that you are no different from Rudy Giuliani or Kellyanne Conway or any of other people who sacrifice their once-decent reputation for the grifter and liar who sits in the Oval Office,” Hirono said to Barr during a long build-up to a question.

Committee chairman, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., cut Hirono off. “You slandered this man from top to bottom,” Graham said to the Hawaii senator.

Limbaugh argued that Hirono never intended to ask any meaningful questions to Barr but really intended to hurt his “integrity.”

“It was the kill session. Her mission during these hearings has been to kill Barr professionally, and his integrity,” Limbaugh said.

The radio host blamed Hirono’s “poisonous hatred” for President Trump for her treatment of Barr.

“I think it is her essential consuming, poisonous hatred for Donald Trump, and Barr is the way she can get to Trump today, so Barr becomes her target,” Limbaugh said.

Bret Easton Ellis, noted American author, appeared on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Wednesday and talked about the continued reaction of “hysterical liberals” to President Trump.

The author of “Less Than Zero,” “American Psycho” and “The Rules of Attraction” said that today’s political climate has created an environment in which anyone who doesn’t “adamantly condemn” Trump with “a hysterical overreaction” is deemed colluding with the president.

BERKELEY FOLLOWS PLASTIC STRAW BAN BY CHARGING DINERS AN EXTRA QUARTER FOR DISPOSABLE CUPS

“I’m a freethinker in many ways,” Ellis told host Tucker Carlson, “and I did see something wrong with the portrayal of Trump in the media. I thought the media was covering him in a way that wasn’t necessarily truthful.”

He told Carlson that although he didn’t vote for Trump, his observation about the media got him marked as a “psycho rightwing guy.”

“I suddenly got branded a conservative,” he said, noting he is a fictional author and believes his ideology is middle of the road and nonpartisan.

He reckoned that the liberal xenophobia stems from a cognitive dissonance: coastal elites who are entitled and who felt betrayed by Trump’s win.

His latest book, “White,” is his first work of nonfiction that is about what he calls, “Generation Wuss,” otherwise known as the young who are branded as overly sensitive snowflakes.

He hopes that a pushback happens for the left’s “authoritarian language belief” of what can and can’t be said in the realms of art and creativity.

Neither side likes the hyper-tyrannical political correctness, but the end of policing thought and speech isn’t yet in sight, Ellis says.

He noted: “I’ve never tried to offend anyone, and I’m always amazed how I’ve managed to trigger generation after generation after generation.”
