Counter-extremism expert says media, politicians should identify attacks in Sri Lanka for what they are

The founder of a London-based think tank that focuses on counter-extremism criticized media outlets and prominent political figures for not being forthright about this past Sunday’s suicide bombings in Sri Lanka aimed at Christians.

Six suicide bombings were orchestrated by Jihadi extremists against Sri Lanka’s Christian community killing over 300 people.

The media and prominent political figures went out of their way to downplay the religious aspects of the attacks prompting criticism, host Tucker Carlson said.

SRI LANKA AUTHORITIES WARNED OF EASTER CHURCH BOMBINGS WEEKS BEFORE SUNDAY’S MASSACRE, OFFICIALS SAY

“They have been unable to name Islamist extremism by name and jihadist terrorism being a violent manifestation because they genuinely believe that a bigger threat due to their political perspective is white supremacist and far-right extremism and then, of course, there’s the pragmatic political side of things. They are pandering to a certain vote base and they fear by naming these things even if they wanted to, it would cause them trouble with their base and that’s not how I operate and that’s not how I think any decent human being should operate,” Maajid Nawaz, founder of Quilliam said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“What happened in New Zealand was a white supremacist terrorist attack and what’s happened in Sri Lanka is a jihadist terrorist attack and it moves us all to speak plainly about this so we can address these problems.”

Former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted their condolences Sunday to Sri Lanka but made it a point to avoid calling the victims Christians, instead calling them “Easter worshippers.”

The Washington Post published an analytical piece Monday entitled “Christianity under attack? Sri Lanka church bombings stoke far-right anger in the West.”

Nawaz lamented the political angles being played during tragedy.

“I think sadly too many people play politics with tragedy and they allow for their own framework of their own bias to influence how they view human tragedy and then they use that to peddle their own political narrative,” Nawaz said.

DailyMail.com editor-at-large and former CNN anchor Piers Morgan appeared on “Hannity” Monday night where he lambasted Democrats and the mainstream media for their reaction to the Mueller Report’s release last week, calling it “a disgrace.”

“Mueller was the savior, the man on the white horse riding into town to take down President Trump on collusion with Russia, he would be exposed as a traitor and this would be the end of his presidency. And then Mueller report comes out and it turns out it was all nonsense. It was to quote Donald Trump, it was ‘fake news,'” Morgan told host Sean Hannity.

TOP DEM DISMISSES POSSIBILITY OF COLLUSION FATIGUE: ‘THE RUSSIANS AREN’T GETTING TIRED’

Last week, Attorney General William Barr released a redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report that revealed the Trump campaign did not collude with Russia.

Morgan criticized The New York Times, The Washington Post and cable news outlets for pushing the “obstruction of justice” narrative after the Mueller report did not result in charges against the president.

“We are supposed to believe now that Donald Trump committed repeated obstruction of justice over a crime that he now, as we all know, did not commit? He is trying to obstruct people from investigating something he says he said he didn’t do and Special Counsel has confirmed he didn’t do. It is ridiculous, it is a farce, it is making a mockery of America,” Morgan said.

The British television presenter also mocked liberals unable to cope with the fact that Trump beat Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016.

“The liberals here are refusing to accept results in 2016. ‘But Hillary won the popular vote.’ Who cares? It’s not about the popular vote,” Morgan said.

Morgan also went after his old employer CNN, saying he still had friends there but wondering aloud if they are continuing their coverage for monetary reasons.

TRUMP RAILS AGAINST ‘BULLS—‘ IN MUELLER REPORT

“I don’t know why they have done that other than it gives them a lot of money, I guess.  I think it damages their credibility and I wish they weren’t doing it,” Morgan said.

Morgan warned the media and Democrats that if they continue to cover President Trump in the same vein that they are essentially guaranteeing him a second term.

“If the Democrats, fueled by the media, try to continue to fight this, and I’m telling you what will happen, Donald Trump will get reelected and he will have four more years of this,” Morgan said.

The former head of the Small Business Association, Linda McMahon, said Monday that for the economy to continue to grow President Trump must be reelected.

“We need to re-elect President Donald Trump because he put all of these policies in place. I mean, do we really want to stop this economy and the growth that is going?” McMahon said on “The Story with Martha MacCallum.”

McMahon, who last month left the administration, is the chair of the pro-Trump America First Action PAC.

“I’m just a very practical, common sense person, when I’m out looking across the country and I see the positive impact that the president’s policies have had, I’m going ‘why do we want the stop this?” McMahon added saying she was 100 percent behind the president.

McMahon didn’t seem too worried about a matchup with Democratic presidential candidate frontrunner Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and was asked by guest host Ed Henry about a possible general election featuring pro-capitalist Trump versus Democratic socialist Sanders.

“I would love to see that,” McMahon said.

“Because I really do believe Americans, and polls show, that most Americans do believe in capitalism and not socialism. It’s where our country has been founded on, what made our country so successful.”

McMahon also touted Trump’s vision for America and the economy.

“I think the president certainly touts that experience as an entrepreneur who built a business and has watched the economy grow here as being president. He’s known what to do. He’s been a bit disruptive doing it and I think that’s why he was elected, ” McMahon told Henry.

As legal troubles mount for high-profile attorney Michael Avenatti, a former federal prosecutor Monday compared him to a “Disney villain” and said Avenatti may have found a fight that’s too big, even for him.

Avenatti is accused of embezzling almost $2 million from the former girlfriend of Hassan Whiteside, a center for the NBA’s Miami Heat.

Avenatti negotiated a $3 million deal for Alexis Gardner, 27.

MICHAEL AVENATTI ACCUSED OF TRYING TO EXTORT NIKE FOR $25 MILLION

Hassan then wired $2.75 million to a trust account set up by Avenatti in January 2017 according to bank records and an Apr. 10 indictment by a California-based grand jury, the Washington Examiner reported.

Avenatti was to receive $1 million in legal fees but allegedly funneled $2.5 million of the wired payment toward purchasing a private jet.

“Federal prosecutors don’t get the papers wrong. If she got $2 million, she will know about it. Easy to trace. These cases are difficult to argue your way out of. He likes to fight. He may have found a fight that’s too big for him,” former federal prosecutor Alex Little said on “Shepard Smith Reporting.”

Shepard Smith asked Little about a possible motivation for committing such a crime.

“This is about greed. Most of these crimes are about greed or addiction.  We don’t know anything about whether or not he’s got some addiction. But if you don’t have that, you kind of point to, this is the guy that wanted to spend a lot of money,” Little said.

He also said Avenatti “was trying to bring in money. When there wasn’t enough, he cut corners and stole it.”

Avenatti, the former attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels, is facing up to 335 years in prison after he was slapped with three dozen federal charges earlier this month alleging he stole millions of dollars from his clients, failed to pay taxes and lied in bankruptcy cases, among other accusations by a Southern California grand jury.

Last month in New York, Avenatti was arrested for allegedly trying to shake down Nike for up to $25 million.

As a handful of top Democrats have called for the impeachment of President Trump, Fox News digital politics editor Chris Stirewalt noted Monday that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report may not sway the American people as the president’s opponents might expect.

“And, the question here is, would the American people countenance an impeachment. And, the answer is probably no, because there’s nothing that anyone who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 could have read in the Mueller report, scuzzy as much of it was, unsettling as much of it was, that wasn’t already baked into their consideration of Donald Trump,” Stirewalt said on “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

Stirewalt was discussing the most important question to ask for those considering impeachment of President Trump, saying pursuing that route was a “nonstarter.”

TOP DEM DISMISSES POSSIBILITY OF COLLUSION FATIGUE: ‘THE RUSSIANS AREN’T GETTING TIRED’

“He didn’t exactly run as Pope Francis in 2016, right, people knew a lot of this kind of stuff about his character before he ran, that’s why I think it is a nonstarter,” Stirewalt told Bret Baier.

House Democrats backed off the idea of immediately launching impeachment proceedings against Trump in a conference call Monday evening, amid a growing rift among the party’s rank-and-file members, presidential contenders and committee chairs on the issue.

Two senior sources told Fox News that on the conference call, House Financial Services Committee Chair Maxine Waters, D-Calif., told her fellow Democrats that while she personally favored going forward with impeachment proceedings, she was not pushing for other members to join her.

Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York also noted that the timing of impeachment would make the political climate “crazy.”

TRUMP RAILS AGAINST ‘BULLS—‘ IN MUELLER REPORT

“One last thing that the leadership is aware of, the timing of this will be crazy. If the Democrats start now, it will take a while to rev up the impeachment machine, and when they get going, we will be smack in the middle of a presidential election campaign where the impeachee is running for reelection,” York said Monday.

“Doing this in the middle of a campaign would put the whole process on steroids. It’s crazy enough to begin with. The leadership is very worried about just the unpredictable aspect of that.”

Fox News’ Bret Baier, Mike Emanuel and Gregg Re contributed to this report.

Darrell Issa: Democrats using investigations to stop Trump re-election

Former California Rep. Darrell Issa argued Monday that Democrats intend to use obstruction charges to derail the president’s 2020 election campaign just days after the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report.

“This is about searching for the thing that’s going to stop the president from winning re-election. They couldn’t undo the election,” Issa said on “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”

“They’re now trying — not to impeach I don’t expect to see articles of impeachment but I do see they’re clearly trying to get his tax records, his business records. They’re trying to use the power of subpoena, not to do oversight over some known misconduct, but in fact to see if they can find something that they can use against him in the re-elect.”

TRUMP RAILS AGAINST ASSOCIATES WHO SPOKE TO MUELLER, CALLS CLAIMS ‘TOTAL BULL—T’

The release of a redacted version of Mueller’s report did little to stop partisan attacks between the president and Democrats who’ve continued to investigate Trump.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., subpoenaed former White House counsel Don McGahn Monday. Nadler said he wanted McGahn to testify publicly next month.

In addition, Trump’s lawyers on Monday sued to block a subpoena issued by members of Congress that sought his financial records.

The complaint named Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee, and Peter Kenny, the chief investigative counsel of the House committee, as its plaintiffs.

Issa, a former member of the House Judiciary Committee, said if obstruction charges fail, Democrats will use other angles to continue to attack the president.

“They know they want to hang the president, they just don’t yet know the charge. When collusion didn’t work, they’re going to try obstruction. When that doesn’t work, they’re going it try tax evasion,” Issa said.

“They’ve got a long list of hypothetical charges for which they have no known crime.”

Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano said Monday Democrats can’t just get President Trump’s financial records “because they want to torment him” and “Congress will have to state for what purpose they want this.”

Napolitano made the comments on “America’s Newsroom” hours after Trump’s lawyers sued to block a subpoena issued by members of Congress that sought the president’s financial records.

The complaint named Rep. Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Peter Kenny, the chief investigative counsel of the House committee, as its plaintiffs.

“We will not allow Congressional Presidential harassment to go unanswered,” said Jay Sekulow, counsel to the president.

Earlier this month, Cummings, D-Md., said the committee would subpoena the accounting firm Mazars USA LLC for Trump’s financial information. Cummings is seeking annual statements, periodic financial reports and independent auditors reports from Mazars, as well as records of communications with Trump.

TRUMP SUES TO BLOCK DEMOCRATS’ SUBPOENA FOR FINANCIAL INFORMATION

“The question is if the subpoena goes from the House of Representatives to a third party to his accountants can the president jump in the middle of that and seek to quash the subpoena? The answer is yes,” said Napolitano.

He added, “The complaint actually asks the court to second- guess Congress’s motivation and courts are reluctant to do that because the courts and the Congress are equal branches of government. They don’t get in the business of second-guessing the motivation of either. However, Congress has to have a legitimate legislative purpose for wanting the president’s tax returns and financial records. They can’t just get them because he’s the president and because his predecessors have exposed this type of material about themselves and they can’t just get them because they want to torment him. They have to have a legitimate purpose.”

“So Congress will have to answer this complaint, establish a purpose, it doesn’t have to be a purpose directly out of the Constitution, it could be something tangentially related to what Congress does that’ll probably suffice. But, if they can’t show that purpose, then they’re going to lose. Then the subpoena will be quashed,” Napolitano said.

In the suit on Monday, Trump’s lawyers ask the court to declare the subpoena “invalid and unenforceable.” It also asks for a “permanent injunction quashing Chairman Cummings’ subpoena.”

HOUSE OVERSIGHT CHAIRMAN WILL SUBPOENA TRUMP’S ACCOUNTANT

Trump’s suit also asks for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction prohibiting Mazars from producing the requested information.

“Congress will have to state for what purpose they want this,” said Napolitano adding, “Once they state something even related to a congressional purpose, the court, I think, will allow this to go through.”

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta, a 2014 appointee of then-President Barack Obama.

After House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Monday she does not support impeachment, Fox News Political Editor Chris Stirewalt stressed that her position was appropriate, given that discussion of impeachment puts Democrats in a difficult position.

In a statement, Pelosi responded to calls from fellow Democrats seeking to move forward with impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump following the release of a redacted version of Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Pelosi said there are methods other than impeachment that can be taken to hold Trump responsible for what she calls “highly unethical and unscrupulous behavior.”

During a Monday afternoon appearance on “The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino,” Stirewalt argued that Democrats can gain many of the political benefits they seek without impeachment.

JOHN SUNUNU ON PUSHING FOR TRUMP IMPEACHMENT: “DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO MAKE A SERIOUS, SERIOUS MISTAKE”

“For a long time, Pelosi could say, ‘We’re not going to do anything until after the report is in, then we’ll make a judgment.’ Now they’re going to force them to make a decision, and it puts the majority of Democrats in an uncomfortable position,” Stirewalt said.

Stirewalt said Democrats could take a number of other routes in any pursuit of justice without moving forward with impeachment proceedings.

PELOSI FACES MOUNTING TRUMP IMPEACHMENT PRESSURE FROM DEM RANKS AFTER MUELLER REPORT

“The reality is that Democrats are going to continue to hold hearings on all of the things,” he said. “Everything is going to have a hearing and everyone will testify – Mueller will testify – and the president is going to eventually see his tax returns turned over to Congress. All of these things are going to happen and can happen without impeachment.

“Impeachment brings along its own problems, all of its own baggage. You can have all those political benefits for Democrats without embracing the downside,” he added.

President Trump tweeted Monday about his frustrations with the continued conversations about the possibility of impeachment, writing, “Only high crimes and misdemeanors can lead to impeachment. There were no crimes by me (No Collusion, No Obstruction), so you can’t impeach. It was the Democrats that committed the crimes, not your Republican President! Tables are finally turning on the Witch Hunt!”

Rep. Cicilline: Congress has a responsibility to conduct oversight, even if it makes Trump supporters uncomfortable

As the legal battle over President Trump’s tax returns rages on, Rep. David Cicilline, D- R.I., Monday argued that Congress should be able to gather all the information possible to conduct oversight, including accessing Trump’s financial information.

President Trump made a major move Monday by suing in an attempt to halt a subpoena, issued by the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee, that would compel his accounting firm, Mazars, to reveal his tax returns for the last 10 years.

In the lawsuit, President Trump’s lawyer argued that Congress should only be able to view the financial information if there is a legislative purpose. During an appearance on “Outnumbered,” Rep. Cicilline, who is also the co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee, said that he believes Congress has a right to collect the evidence it sees fit to fulfill its responsibility to conduct oversight.

“I understand that there are some people who think that Congress should not do oversight, and it’s kind of rich when the president tries to make himself a victim, as the most powerful man on the planet,” Cicilline told host Melissa Francis.

“We are doing our work addressing the economic issues that face the American people, but at the same time, we have to do oversight. I know that that is uncomfortable, but Congress has a responsibility, whatever party, the legislative branch has a responsibility. I know that there are some Trump supporters that think any oversight is unfair, but we have a long tradition of doing oversight, it is part of the responsibility,” he added.

COLUMNIST MICHAEL GOODWIN: TRUMP SHOULD VIEW MUELLER REPORT AS A RENEWED LEASE ON OVAL OFFICE

EX-TRUMP ATTORNEY DOWD DISPUTES MUELLER REPORT, SAYS PRESIDENT NEVER TRIED TO OUST SPECIAL COUNSEL

Cicilline went on to discuss the Democrats’ new talk of trying to impeach President Trump amid the results of Robert Mueller’s investigation. The Democratic representative said he has read the report in its entirety, and that “there was real evidence of the president attempting to interfere with the investigation.”

“I think that report is disturbing,” Cicilline continued. “It is very damning about the president’s conduct. He encouraged people to lie, he encouraged people to not be forthright about events, he himself lied, he attempted to fire the special counsel, he attempted to get Don McGahn to lie about his effort to fire him.

“There is ample evidence of obstruction of justice. It is very clear that the only reason that the president was not charged is that the special counsel concluded that the [Department of Justice] precluded it,” he said.

President Trump maintains that there was no obstruction or collusion on his part, something with which House Democrats vehemently disagree.

Ultimately, Cicilline said, Democrats have more work to do before any further conclusions can be made on the discussion of impeachment.

“There is a process, we will have a series of hearings, which we will take this very seriously, and I think Democrats will continue to be very judicious about it,” he said.

Former CIA station chief on Sri Lanka deadly attacks: ‘This is by all accounts an intelligence failure’

Former CIA station chief Daniel Hoffman called the deadly Easter Sunday explosions at multiple churches and hotels in Sri Lanka “an intelligence failure.”

“This is by all accounts an intelligence failure. Security services are responsible for penetrating local extremist groups, understanding their nexus to other overseas transnational groups and then collecting intelligence so they can pre-empt attacks and that didn’t happen in this case and as a result we have almost 300 dead and 500 wounded,” said Hoffman, a Fox News contributor, on “America’s Newsroom” on Monday.

A pair holding dual U.S. and British nationalities was among the 11 foreigners killed after a series of explosions struck three churches and three luxury hotels in and just outside Sri Lanka’s capital Easter Sunday, leaving at least 290 people dead and more than 500 others injured, officials said.

The U.S. State Department confirmed in a statement that “several U.S. citizens were among those killed” in the explosions, although no more information was immediately available.

“One of the things I think we’ll be looking at is the number of Sri Lankans who traveled to the so-called Islamic caliphate, some of whom apparently have returned. Were they part of this group? Did they make contacts with Al Qaeda or with the Islamic state? Those are open questions,” said Hoffman.

He added, “I just don’t believe this was a locally-conducted attack. There’s too many people. Already 24 arrested. It’s a massive undertaking with a support network I think that would demand international collaboration but we don’t have a lot of facts.”

The six nearly simultaneous blasts—followed hours later by two more explosions—marked the bloodshed as among the worst since the South Asian country’s 26-year civil war ended a decade ago, a spokesperson for the Sri Lanka police said.

Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said all of the suicide bombers were Sri Lankan citizens from a domestic Muslim militant group named National Thowfeek Jamaath, but that authorities suspect foreign links.

Police said more than a dozen suspects have been arrested, though there was no immediate claim of responsibility.

“This terrorist attack really bears all the hallmarks of an Al Qaeda attack, where you had three churches and three hotels frequented by foreigners all attacked over a short amount of time and over distance, that’s a traditional way that Al Qaeda likes to mount attacks. Multiple spectacular attacks to drive first responders to multiple areas and achieve maximum effect in the press afterwards,” said Hoffman. “What’s surprising about this attack is that no one thus far has claimed responsibility.”

He added, “The security services in Sri Lanka are in the unenviable position right now of simultaneously conducting forensics to determine what happened and then try to determine whether there are other threats out there that they need to preempt. Just today a ninth improvised explosive device was found near the airport, so there’s a lot of concern.”
