A family member of two injured victims in Saturday’s shooting at a synagogue in a San Diego, California, suburb said his family had moved there from a town in Israel near the Gaza border amid constant rocket attacks.

“We came from fire to fire,” said Israel Dahan, the father of 8-year-old Noya Dahan, who was hit by shrapnel in the face and leg after a shooter stormed into the Chabad of Poway as about 100 people were celebrating the last day of Passover.

Dahan made the comment on an Israeli radio program, according to The Times of Israel. He said a few years ago he moved with his family to California from Sderot, which is in southern Israel near the Gaza border. Dahan said his family’s home in the Israeli town had been hit by rockets several times over the years, and that he was injured during one of the attacks.

He added, after moving to the U.S. several years ago, the family’s new home was targeted by anti-Semites, who spray-painted swastikas on the walls.

“It can happen anywhere. We are strong,” Dahan said.

LEADERS STRUGGLE TO MAKE SENSE OF FATAL ATTACK ON SYNAGOGUE

According to The Times of Israel, Noya Dahan’s injured uncle, Almog Peretz, said life in Sderot prepared him to respond to the synagogue attack. He reportedly was shot in the leg in Saturday’s shooting as he was trying to protect children in the synagogue.

Peretz said his instincts kicked in on Saturday after spending the last 15 years often rushing to shelters to hide from thousands of rockets fired by terror groups in the Gaza Strip.

The Times of Israel is reporting that from his hospital bed, Peretz told Israel’s Channel 12 that it’s “sad” but he knows “a bit about running from the Qassam rockets” because he is originally from Sderot.

“A person with a big rifle, like an M16, entered the synagogue and started shooting everywhere,” Peretz told the news outlet as he described Saturday’s attack. “At first we thought the ceiling had collapsed, but then I turned around and saw he was aiming his weapon at me.”

He said he noticed there were many small children next to him.

“I took a little girl who was our neighbor and three nieces of mine and ran. I opened the back door and we ran with all the children to a building in the back. I hid them in that building,” said Peretz.

“As I picked up the girl, the terrorist aimed his weapon at me. I was injured in the leg.”

Peretz said he then returned to the synagogue because another niece was still inside.

He said, “I came back because one of my nieces was stuck in the bathroom. I had to go back and bring her.”

“Fortunately she stayed there and the terrorist had already left,” he continued.

Local authorities said 19-year-old John Earnest opened fire with an assault rifle on worshippers during morning services on Saturday, killing 60-year-old Lori Gilbert-Kaye and injuring the rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein; Noya Dahan; and her uncle Peretz. All three wounded victims are in stable condition, according to The Times of Israel.

Authorities said Earnest surrendered to police.

Audrey Jacobs, a woman who identified herself as Gilbert-Kaye’s friend, posted on Facebook that Gilbert-Kaye was a woman who was “always running to do a mitzvah (good deed)” and that her “final good deed was taking the bullets for Rabbi Mendel Goldstein to save his life.”

Jacobs said Gilbert-Kaye leaves behind “a devastated husband and her 22-year-old daughter.”

She added the other victims and their families want to share this message: “At the Chabad of Poway Synagogue on Shabbat (Saturday) and the last day of the Passover holiday, a 19-year-old stormed in and said ‘F— the Jews’ and opened fire with an AR-type assault weapon.”

The post said, “He shot and killed Lori Kaye z”l (of blessed memory) who took the bullets for the Rabbi. Tragically the Rabbi was still shot in the hand and he gave a sermon telling everyone to stay strong.”

“The horror continues, the other victims suffering shrapnel injuries include a 8-year-old girl, Noya Dahan. She asked for her picture to be shared and for everyone to know she is strong. The other shrapnel victim was Almog Peretz,  age 32, Noya’s uncle who came from Sderot to visit his family for the Passover holiday. He was a hero today, gathering the children and leading them to safety.”

The Facebook post also said, “During the shooting a brave off-duty border patrol agent chased and fired at the shooter as he ran off. Fortunately he was caught by the authorities and is in custody.”

POLITICIANS REACT TO CALIFORNIA SYNAGOGUE SHOOTING: ‘NO ONE SHOULD EVER FEAR GOING TO THEIR PLACE OF WORSHIP’

“Noya’s family moved to San Diego from the Israeli city of Sderot (San Diego’s sister city) to get away from the terrorism and the constant attacks on their community. The peaceful city in Israel they’re from is in the Negev and is less than a mile from the Gaza border. For years their home has been a major target of Qassam rocket attacks from terrorists in the Gaza Strip,” Jacobs added in the Facebook post.

According to San Diego County Sheriff William Gore, Earnest, who reportedly had no previous contact with law enforcement, may be charged with a hate crime in addition to homicide. Earnest is also being investigated in connection with an arson attack on a mosque in nearby Escondido, California, on March 24.

Gore added that the off-duty Border Patrol agent working as a security guard fired at the shooter as he fled, missing him but striking his getaway vehicle.

San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said, shortly after fleeing, Earnest called 911 to report the shooting and when an officer reached him on a roadway, “the suspect pulled over, jumped out of his car with his hands up and was immediately taken into custody.”

Gore said authorities were reviewing copies of Earnest’s social media posts, including what he described as a “manifesto.”

A person identifying themselves as John Earnest posted an anti-Jewish screed online about an hour before the attack. The poster described himself as a nursing school student and praised the suspects accused of carrying out deadly attacks on mosques in New Zealand last month and at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life synagogue in October.

Bill Maher rips Robert Mueller, claims ‘Prosecutor Jesus’ declined to nail Trump

Late-night host Bill Maher ripped Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Friday’s edition of “Real Time” for not indicting President Trump and instead “playing by the book” in his Russia investigation.

“For over two years America has had a crazy person in the White House and for over two years the Democrats have done f— all about it because they were waiting for Mueller. We all sat around waiting for ‘Prosecutor Jesus’ to turn in his big report. And he came back with, ‘Ask someone else,'” Maher said during the show’s “New Rules” segment.

“We needed Superman and we got Clark Kent.”

TRUMP WORRIED MUELLER APPOINTMENT WOULD DISTRACT FROM HIS PRESIDENCY: ‘THIS IS THE END. I’M F—ED’

Last week Attorney General William Barr released the Mueller report, which cleared President Trump’s campaign of collusion with Russia. However, Mueller declined to make a decision on obstruction of justice regarding the president’s conduct. So the liberal host took Mueller to task.

“Mueller’s a Boy Scout, a straight arrow, he played it by the book,” Maher said. “But you may have noticed for the past three years we’ve kind of been off book.”

Maher then compared Mueller’s decision with actions by former presidents Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln, saying Jefferson didn’t have the authority to complete the Louisiana Purchase but made the deal anyway. He then mentioned the movie “Lincoln,” saying that the 16th president “lied, bribed, freed prisoners, and fast-tracked a new state into the Union — none of which Mueller would have had to do.”

He added, “All he had to do is what people in the justice system do every day. Use the law to come to justice. Not be so restricted by technicalities that the bad guys win.”

Maher also compared America to an aging baseball shortstop and said Mueller’s “breadcrumbs” — the vaunted “roadmap to impeachment” that some say is contained in Mueller’s report — weren’t good enough.

“Bob, your trail of breadcrumbs isn’t good enough. We’re not that smart anymore. America is an aging shortstop. You have to hit it right at us,” Maher said.

The “Real Time” host also blamed Mueller for a recent quote by Rudy Giuliani, the president’s legal counsel, who said that, “There’s nothing wrong with taking information from the Russians.”

“That’s where we are now,” Maher said. “I lay that on Mueller.”

U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and a vocal critic of President Trump, said Friday night that he had “no expectations” that Trump would be indicted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller at the conclusion of the Russia investigation.

“Even if the evidence supported it, because [Mueller] is fundamentally conservative — and I don’t mean left-right conservative — but he was going to follow the established policy. He was not going to make new ground,” Schiff said during an appearance on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher.

“So I didn’t think it was realistic to expect that [Mueller] would indict the president,” Schiff continued, “and those that did, I think, were unrealistic in their expectations.”

KELLYANNE CONWAY REITERATES CALL FOR ADAM SCHIFF’S RESIGNATION AFTER MUELLER REPORT’S RELEASE

Last week Attorney General William Barr released a redacted version of the full Mueller report that cleared the president of collusion with Russia. Nevertheless, House Democrats are continuing their investigations into the president’s actions — while Republicans want answers about how the investigation began.

Schiff argued that the report ultimately did prove that Trump was “unfit for the presidency.”

“I do think [Mueller] laid out what we needed to see, which is that the Russians were engaged in a systemic effort to interfere in our election, that the Trump campaign welcomed it, embraced it, built it into their plan, made full use of it, lied about it, covered it up and then obstructed the investigation into it,” Schiff said.

“And if we had any doubt before about this president’s fitness for office there was no doubt remaining. He is unfit for the presidency.”

Maher pressed Schiff on the Democratic Party’s continued focus on the Mueller report.

“Now, it looks like you’re stalking him,” before bringing up impeachment, Maher said.

Schiff hesitated to commit to impeachment, focusing instead on the 2020 election.

“”I’m not there yet on impeachment. I may get there. He may get me there,” Schiff said. “At the end of the day, Bill, there’s only one way to deal with this problem, whether we impeach him or not. And that is to vote his a– out of office.”

Schiff told Maher he is advising his colleagues as well as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidates to not talk about Russia. He also began making his case for whom he’ll support in 2020 — anyone except President Trump.

“And I’ll tell you who I’m behind in 2020 and I’m behind them the heart and soul,” Schiff said. “Any living adult 2020. Anyone who gets the nomination. We all need to get behind them whether we were for them or not for them.”

Avenatti defends ‘lavish’ lifestyle amid fraud charges, says Trump ‘should be indicted’

Embattled attorney Michael Avenatti spoke out Friday against the criminal charges against him in during an interview with CNN, where he defended his “lavish” lifestyle amid the controversy.

Earlier this month, Avenatti was indicted on 36 counts including charges of fraud, perjury and embezzlement. Among the allegations: an attempt to extort $20 million from sports apparel giant Nike, telling the company he would “ride off into the sunset” if the money was paid.

“Did I say we’d ride off into the sunset? Yes. Was it in the context Nike and the government alleges? Absolutely night,” Avenatti said Friday. “What happened was that Nike and their attornies figured out that they couldn’t buy me, they couldn’t own me, they couldn’t control me. “

He denied he had ever attempted to extort money from Nike.

Avenatti told CNN that he “immediately saw it as an opportunity to do collateral damage” to President Trump when he was hired by porn star Stormy Daniels, who wanted out of a hush agreement regarding an alleged affair with the president. He insists he “accomplished the goal, although not entirely.”

He blasted the three-year prison sentence of Trump’s former personal attorney Michael Cohen, saying it wasn’t “strong enough” and said Trump “should be indicted.” Avenatti himself is facing 300 years behind bars.

Avenatti told CNN he’s “not at liberty” to talk about charges that he withheld a $4 million settlement from a paraplegic man, but he did defend his “lavish lifestyle,” including a $2.5 million private jet he allegedly bought using another client’s money.

“I had an interest in a private jet, but there’s nothing unusual about some of these factors related to my lifestyle. Have I had a privileged lifestyle? Of course,” Avenatti defended himself. “Have I had a lifestyle some people would describe as lavish at times? Yes. I’m a self-made guy. I put myself through college. I put myself through law school. Nothing was ever handed to me. … I’ve busted my a– for a lot of what I’ve received.”

When pressed whether he bought the private jet with money that belonged to client, he told CNN that he would present “facts and evidence” to a jury and they’ll decide.

“My lawyers didn’t even want me to sit down for this interview,” he continued. “The problem is I’ve been told to say absolutely nothing and I’ve said, ‘No, I’m not going to do that.”

Former congressman Trey Gowdy blasted 2020 presidential candidate Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., Friday for continuing to claim that President Trump is a Russian asset.

“President Eric Swalwell, that ought to scare the ever-living hell out of you,” Gowdy told “The Story with Martha MacCallum” while reacting to a clip of Swalwell on MSNBC.

ERIC SWALWELL CONTINUES TO REFUSE TO ANSWER TRUMP ‘RUSSIAN ASSET’ QUESTION

The Mueller report published last month revealed that investigators did not establish evidence that the Trump campaign had conspired with Russia.

Swalwell seems to think otherwise.

“Here’s what we know. The Russians helped Donald Trump,” Swalwell said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber.”

“Sure, but to be clear you are no longer maintaining that he is effectively a ‘Russian asset,'” MSNBC host Ari Melber interjected.

“No, I think he acts on Russia’s behalf and I challenge him to show me otherwise,” Swalwell responded.

Gowdy accused Swalwell of playing politics.

“His last sentence is exactly the difference between a prosecutor and a politician.  Prosecutors prove that you did something, politicians make you prove you did not. Did you hear his last sentence? ‘I challenge President Trump to prove that he did not do something.’ That’s what politicians do,” Gowdy said.

Swalwell, who has long been a critic of the president, announced he was running for president earlier this month.

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said Friday that texts between former FBI agent Peter Strzok and former FBI attorney Lisa Page suggesting that they use a post-election briefing to gather information on the Trump team was evidence of a “coup.”

“Well, every time we get more information out about Peter Strzok and Lisa Page it goes to what they originally wanted to do — prevent Donald Trump from becoming president, and the use and abuse of power to try and infiltrate, if you will, of the transition team of President Trump and then use it to do what? Which we anticipated from other text messages, to try and delegitimize the president,” Biggs said on “Outnumbered Overtime.”

FOX NEWS EXCLUSIVE: INTERNAL FBI TEXT MESSAGES REVEAL DOJ CONCERNS OVER ‘BIAS’ IN KEY WARRANT TO SURVEIL TRUMP AIDE

“In any other country, we would call it a coup when you abuse the power of the police state to basically disenfranchise or just eliminate, if you will, the acting president. That’s what was being done here.”

Messages between Strzok and Page indicate they discussed using briefings with the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe.

The texts, initially made public in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with Sens. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson, R-Wis., sending a letter Thursday to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter.

Biggs blasted the former FBI officials and accused them of “recruiting.”

“I don’t see how you can take that as some kind of benign, ‘Let’s develop this happy relationship.’ It wasn’t a happy relationship. It was a hostile and adversarial relationship or they were trying to delegitimize the president,” Biggs said.

“I view it as they wanted to recruit. That’s what it sounds to me. When they start talking about, “Can we develop this asset?” Good grief, that’s recruiting.”

President Trump’s Federal Reserve board nominee Stephen Moore addressed his past controversial columns Friday, apologizing and defending himself against critics of his nomination.

“Look, I’m no angel. If you go back 15, 18, 20 years as reporters are doing and look at things I have written in terms of the thousands of articles and, you know, hundreds and hundreds of media appearances I have done and speeches you will maybe be able to find things that I said that were in politic,” Moore told Fox News’ “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”

STEPHEN MOORE SLAMS CNN & OTHER MEDIA: ‘PULLING A KAVANAUGH AGAINST ME’

“Some of the statements I made about women in a column 18 years ago. I have been very apologetic about. I wish I hadn’t have written it.”

Moore, a former Fox News and CNN contributor, has been under fire since he was announced as a nominee last month.

Earlier this week, Moore compared himself to then embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of sexual abuse and misconduct, accusations which he denied.

CNN reported on a number of columns Moore wrote that appear to be sexist or anti-women. Moore told CNN the pieces were a “spoof” adding “I have a sense of humor.”

Other reports have trickled out including ugly divorce accusations, a tax lien and videos of a speech where Moore disparaged the cities of Cleveland and Cincinnati.

Moore told Cavuto that if he does become a liability for Republicans he would withdraw, but the former Wall Street Journal editorial board member also said the president and White House chief economist Larry Kudlow continue to support him.

“Look, Donald Trump is a fighter, you know, he doesn’t back down and he doesn’t want me to back down,” Moore said.

Moore also made the point that he wanted the focus of his nomination to be about the economy, not his past comments or his failed marriage.

“This is about — my belief, Neil, is we can get the 4 percent economic growth with zero inflation, high employment. You know, rising living standards. You know, I believe the economic growth and jobs are a women’s issue,” Moore said.

DEMOCRATS TERRIFIED OF STEPHEN MOORE

“I’m a big advocate of that, let’s make the debate about and this how we grow the economy.”

Earlier this week former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain withdrew his nomination for another vacant seat on the Federal Reserve board after allegations of sexual harassment and infidelity, which previously impacted his presidential campaign in 2012, resurfaced.

Cain denied that he resigned over the allegations, claiming instead that he resigned because of job restrictions.

Maine legislators push to remove ‘he’ and ‘him’ from state’s laws and replaced with gender-neutral terms

A bill working its way up through Maine’s state legislature Friday is calling for words like “he” and “him” to be scrubbed out of the wording of its laws – and instead be replaced with more gender-neutral terms.

Rep. Matt Moonen, a Democrat, says he wrote the bill after reading through laws and finding references to mostly male figures in positions of authority.

“The law still refers to the Governor as he, him (or) his, and I kept looking and was increasingly baffled, as I found more places where that is the case,” he said, according to News Center Maine.

The website reports that if the bill goes into effect, passages like “The Governor shall have his official residence in Augusta” will be changed to say “The Governor is entitled to reside in the Governor’s official residence at Augusta.”

Janet Mills was elected last year as the state’s first female governor. Mills and Maine’s first female chief justice, Leigh Saufley, endorsed the proposed changes during a state Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday.

“This legislation is about every Maine woman or Maine girl knowing she is equally deserving of the same opportunity,” News Center Maine quoted her as saying.

“You now have the opportunity to make sure Maine does not meet the first sunrise of 2020 without addressing the outdated gender assumptions enshrined in our laws,” added Saufley.

The bill was approved unanimously yesterday by that committee and now is going in front of the full legislature.

Maine’s voters already approved in 1988 to remove gender-biased language from its state constitution, according to the Associated Press.
