‘The Five’ on what to expect from the Mueller report

The Five” spent time on Wednesday discussing what to expect from Democrats and the news media as Attorney General William Barr releases a redacted version of the Mueller report — a happening set for Thursday.

We already know the top-line conclusion. There was no collusion, matter of fact there was no effort at collusion, and the Russians tried to collude and the Trump team said no,” co-host Dan Bongino said.

“My question going forward, what the heck was Bob Mueller doing for 675 days?”

TRUMP LEGAL TEAM PREPARES MUELLER COUNTER-REPORT ON OBSTRUCTION ALLEGATIONS

Co-host and liberal commentator Marie Harf believes President Trump is trying to get ahead of the report and speculated he may be “embarrassed” on Thursday.

“It seems a little bit like he’s trying to pre-empt what he knows will not be a uniformly good report for him. There will be things in this report that are embarrassing, that all of us sitting around this table would say I never would’ve done that if I worked on a presidential campaign. I think Trump knows that and is trying to get ahead of it,” Harf said.

Co-host Jesse Watters said negative information is expected when it comes to a comprehensive report.

“There’s going to be some derogatory information in there. Because this was a very brutally intrusive exam into the administration and the campaign. You’re going to find some flaws and this was undertaken by kind of ferocious and — not sinister but angry partisan Democrats with a lot of liberal pedigree. They are going to find some things, but overall no obstruction, no collusion,” Watters said.

WOW: CHELSEA HANDLER SAYS SHE HAS ‘FEELINGS’ FOR ROBERT MUELLER

Watters and co-host Greg Gutfeld specifically called out CNN and other key players in the mainstream media for their relentless focus on the Mueller report.

“I just don’t know how CNN is going to handle it because this last week they had the lowest-rated week of all of 2019,” Watters said. “They have a choice to make. Are they going to now report real news about Spygate, or are they going to continue to push fake news? They lost to the Food Network last week, which means people would rather watch a pot boil then watch CNN.”

“It’s really about the Russians and how they manipulated the media, not the voters. The collusion was Russia playing the media for suckers,” Gutfeld said.

Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard told Fox News on Wednesday evening that the Trump administration was “directly undermining” its own attempts to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons by pursuing “regime change” in countries like Venezuela and Iran.

The Hawaii congresswoman told “Special Report with Bret Baier” that it has been “impossible for Kim Jong Un to believe them [the administration] when they tell him, ‘Don’t worry. Get rid of your nuclear weapons. We’re not going to come after you.’ … This is not something that can happen overnight, but it begins with ending our regime change wars in other countries [and] ending our regime change efforts as we are seeing in these countries like Venezuela and Iran.”

Gabbard spoke to Fox News shortly after North Korea announced that it had test-fired a “new-type tactical guided weapon.” The totalitarian country has not tested a ballistic missile since November 2017 and U.S. officials told Fox News that Wednesday’s exercise likely was a “short-range” test of a small guided weapon.

MEGHAN MCCAIN: ‘WHEN I HEAR THE NAME TULSI GABBARD, I THINK OF ASSAD APOLOGIST

“We must be willing to meet with those who may be potential adversaries or adversaries in the pursuit of peace and security,” Gabbard said.

“However, this administration is undermining their own efforts by … making it so they’ve got no credibility as they are trying to barter and negotiate with North Korea and get them to denuclearize.”

Gabbard also addressed criticisms of her past visits to Syria, where she has met with that country’s president. When asked by host Bret Baier if she considers Bashar al-Assad to be a war criminal, Gabbard answered: “What’s more important than the question that you’re asking right now is to focus on the costs of this regime change war on our country [and] the trillions of dollars that we’ve spent on waging a regime change war that has undermined our national security, strengthening terrorist groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda … Let’s focus on the costs and the consequences of these regime change wars and work for the interests of our country.”

When asked if she agreed with the intelligence community’s conclusion that Assad’s forces gassed civilians opposed to his rule, Gabbard answered: “What I have said, and I have said this numerous times, is that the Assad government, the Syrian government …  terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and other jihadist groups in Syria have unfortunately used these chemical weapons in this war that’s currently being waged.”

Former Watergate Assistant Special Prosecutor Jon Sale said Tuesday that Attorney General William Barr will do whatever “the law requires” to keep sensitive information private on the heels of Thursday’s Mueller report release.

“I think Barr will put his head down, do what the law requires. Grand jury material has to be redacted. Doesn’t matter what anybody in the Congress says,” Sale said on “Your World with Neil Cavuto.”

TRUMP LEGAL TEAM PREPARES MUELLER COUNTER-REPORT ON OBSTRUCTION ALLEGATIONS

“But you anticipate as much as half of it? That seems like a lot but it could be,” Cavuto asked Sale.

“It’s not a matter of quantity. The question is whether or not Mueller can actually tell his findings and Barr still do his job,” Sale responded.

Barr is set to hold a news conference Thursday morning, during which he’ll discuss the long-awaited release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his Russia election meddling inquiry, the Justice Department announced Wednesday.

Barr released a four-page summary last month, which stated that the special counsel found no proof of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 presidential election.

Democrats have demanded the full, unredacted report and are expected to issue a subpoena.

Sale says the request is destined for the courts, and Barr is “duty-bound” to resist a subpoena and would not negotiate grand jury material.

“There was a case decided one week ago in which the court of appeals in the District of Columbia held that the court does not have inherent authority in the public interests of whatever reasons to release grand jury material.”

Sale added, “So, I think people are just going to have to accept the court ruling.”

Former Deputy Chief of Staff for George W. Bush Karl Rove said Wednesday House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s claim that “everything is at stake” in the 2020 election  was “over the top.”

Pelosi, D-Calif., told CNN Tuesday, “Everything is at stake in this election. The Constitution of the United States, with the president who is trying to usurp the power of the legislative branch of government, the environment in which we live.”

“A little bit over the top. Almost semi-hysterical,” Rove, who served as Deputy Chief of Staff for George W. Bush from 2005 until 2007, said on “America’s Newsroom” Wednesday in response to Pelosi’s remarks the day before. “You know, The Constitution is at stake, the role of Congress is at stake, our very environment is at stake and it (looks) a little bit sort of unhinged.”

PELOSI SAYS DEMS UNTAINTED BY ANTI-SEMITISM SLAMS AMID OMAR-TRUMP FUED

He added, “On the other hand, it plays into the environment (in) which we find ourselves. Democrats do have a little bit of leeway in saying things are really, really bad even if they sound a little over the top.”

Rove then cited statistics saying, “If you take a look at the Real Clear Politics average of all recent polls, 37.7 percent think the country is going in the right direction and 56.1 (percent) think the country is seriously off on the wrong track.”

He added, “That’s sort of the same dynamic that people had in 2016 when they wanted change and the Democrats are trying to position themselves as the party of change for the 2020 presidential election.”

On “America’s Newsroom,” Rove, a Fox News contributor, also weighed in on Thursday’s release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s much-anticipated Russia report.

MUELLER PROBE HAS COST TAXPAYERS MORE THAN $25 MILLION, SPENDING REPORT REVEALS

Last month, Mueller submitted his almost 400-page report to the Justice Department for review by the attorney general and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. In a letter to Congress, Attorney General Bill Barr relayed some of the primary findings of the report, stating the special counsel found no evidence of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians during the 2016 presidential election.

Barr said he identified four areas of the report that he believed should be redacted, including grand jury material and information the intelligence community believes would reveal intelligence sources and methods.

“We don’t know how much is going to be redacted but let’s be clear, no matter how little the redaction is, short of no redactions at all, this is going to be the opening of the next chapter in which the Democrats on the Hill are going to say ‘you know what? We’re not going to agree that there’s no collusion and we’re certainly not going to agree there is no obstruction unless you totally give us an unredacted version of the Mueller report,” Rove said.

“So this is merely the beginning of act two. We had act one. It lasted two years. Donald Trump was guilty of collusion with the Russians. That got blown up. Now we’re going to be turning to the obstruction issue and unless and until they (Democrats) have what they want, which is (a) totally unredacted version, you can count on the Democrats continuing to raise questions about it.”

He added, “I think the American people are getting tired of all of this and this isn’t a constructive way for the Democrats to move.”

John Yoo, former deputy assistant attorney general to the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel, has defended Attorney General William Barr’s authority to overrule immigration judges in his recent decision regarding asylum seekers.

Barr ruled on Tuesday that asylum seekers coming to the United States will no longer have a chance to be released from custody on bail, and will remain in detention centers until hearings to determine the legitimacy of their claims. Yoo, now a law professor at UC-Berkeley, argued during an appearance on “The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino” on Wednesday that Barr’s ruling was “correct on the merits.”

“I think the attorney general’s critics are overblowing what this is,” Yoo said. “This is not part of some grand scheme against immigrants coming into the United States. It’s a very narrow thing the attorney general has done. He has the power to overrule immigration judges. Immigration judges have been making mistakes — they’ve been allowing bail to be granted to people seeking asylum who are caught past the border.”

He went on to discuss the difference between migrants arriving at the border to seek asylum, and those attempting to enter and remain as citizens.

“It may not actually apply to that many people,” he continued. “I’d be very surprised to see a court overturn it.”

Those fleeing areas of Central America, Yoo said, often don’t see their asylum claims approved because they don’t meet the legal threshold to qualify under United States law.

REP. PETER KING: KEEPING ASYLUM SEEKERS IN CUSTODY UNTIL HEARINGS IS WHAT ‘WHAT HAS TO BE DONE’

REP. JOHN GARAMENDI: TRUMP CAN TACKLE IMMIGRATION CRISIS BY PROVIDING FUNDING IN CENTRAL AMERICA

“Asylum seekers have to show what they call a well-founded fear of persecution back in their home countries,” he said. “The problem for all these people coming from Central America, they’re fleeing for economic reasons. They’re not fleeing because the government is persecuting them.”

Apart from economic purposes, many people are fleeing Central America due to gang violence, which Yoo said still isn’t likely to secure asylum status. U.S. courts typically recognize such activity as “private violence,” and only grant asylum to those being persecuted by the government, such as religious minorities or political dissidents.

“Central American migrants don’t fit in that category,” Yoo continued. “That’s why I think Attorney General Barr is correct.”

A number of prominent figures have come to Barr’s defense, including Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., who told “America’s Newsroom” hosts on Wednesday that keeping asylum seekers in custody until their hearings is “what has to be done.”

Former independent counsel Kenneth Starr said Wednesday he was concerned Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s upcoming redacted report may not be “written in a fair and balanced way.”

“The concern that I think is a fair concern is, is the report going to be written in a fair and balanced way? It is a concern,” Starr said on “America’s Newsroom” on Wednesday. “Now why the concern? Because of Bob Mueller, who I hold in very high regard, his choice of staff. So many questions have been raised about that staff and their leanings and so forth. And they’ve had the opportunity without any kind of cross examination, any kind of check, any kind of balance to write whatever they want to write. And that I think legitimately raises concern of fairness and balance.”

KENNETH STARR ‘VERY PROUD’ OF WILLIAM BARR’S HANDLING OF MUELLER REPORT

Last month, Mueller submitted his almost 400-page report to the Justice Department for review by the attorney general and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. In a letter to Congress, Attorney General Bill Barr relayed some of the primary findings of the report, stating the special counsel found no evidence of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians during the 2016 presidential election. Democrats blasted Barr for what they called his “unacceptable” handling of the initial summary of that document.

Barr said he identified four areas of the report that he believed should be redacted, including grand jury material and information the intelligence community believes would reveal intelligence sources and methods.

MUELLER PROBE HAS COST TAXPAYERS MORE THAN $25 MILLION, SPENDING REPORT REVEALS

“The frustration will be, we don’t have it all. Why don’t we have it all? I think Bill Barr, the Attorney General, has very ably and responsibly answered that. There are restrictions on law. Grand jury testimony being the primary example,” Starr said Wednesday. “And then the acrimony will be this cherry picking. I think it is inevitable. ‘A-ha, do you see this sentence, see that and what that means is,’ and then a lot of interpretation and extrapolation.”

He added, “It would be good if we could call a national time-out and actually review what we have and then come to a more sober judgment. But politics is politics.”

Starr recommended Barr explain why he did what he did in the report once it is released.

“I’m speaking as a citizen who has served in the justice department. This would build, I think, public confidence in what he has done, if he stands and explains it rather than waiting for a Congressional hearing, which will be a week or who knows how long and then all of the spinning goes on in the meantime. Let’s hear from the attorney general of the United States. That’s my hope,” said Starr.

Starr conducted an investigation into former President Bill Clinton and released his report in 1998.

On the anniversary of former First Lady Barbara Bush’s death, journalist Susan Page sat down with Fox News’s Sandra Smith and detailed one of the last moments shared between Barbara and her husband George.

Page, author of “The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty,” described how the pair grew over the course of their marriage and shifted from a more “traditional” relationship in which he “called the shots” to one in which they were more like “partners.”

Before her death in 2018, Barbara, wasn’t so worried about dying as she was leaving her husband of 73 years. Just two days before she died in April, the two sat together in the den of their home in Houston. Page explained how Barbara “said to him ‘George, I’m not going to worry about you’; and he said to her, ‘Bar, I’m not going to worry about you.'”

“She gave him permission to live, he gave her permission to die — and you know what they did then? They had a drink,” Page said on “America’s Newsroom.”

BARBARA BUSH DIDN’T CONSIDER HERSELF REPUBLICAN, BLAMED TRUMP FOR ‘HEART ATTACK,’ NEW BOOK SAYS

The feisty grandmother was “consequential,” Page said, in both her son George W.’s presidency as well as her husband’s. She died at the age of 92 after struggling with multiple health issues.

Bush was known for her tough personality, fighting for expanded literacy, and her battle against the stigma surrounding AIDS. “But I think her legacy is perhaps broader,” Page said, “kind of an air of civility, of mutual respect.”

“And she would tell you that her grandchildren are her true legacy,” Page added. One of Barbara’s toughest moments, according to Page, was when her 3-year-old daughter Robin died of cancer.

“I came to believe, after doing research for this book, that that was the defining moment of her adult life. It left her harder on the outside and softer on the inside,” Page said.

“It was a thread that then continued through the rest of her life. It was a touchstone for her as she thought about the big issues of the day.”

Vice President Mike Pence drew unexpected controversy when he was invited to speak at Taylor University, a small Christian school in rural Indiana.

Some upset students and alumni launched a petition to have his invitation rescinded, saying they felt “personally attacked” and were “physically shaking,” predicting that students will “feel unsafe at their own graduation.”

But Peter Wurster, a Taylor University student and CampusReform.org correspondent, told “Fox & Friends” Wednesday he is excited for Pence to be speaking at his school and hopes it unifies the campus, instead of further division.

“I was really excited about hearing the news,” said Wurster, whose older sister is graduating in May.

“Places like Taylor and at other universities have become places where it’s hard to speak up about these issues,” Wurster added. “I really hope that through this situation we can open a good, meaningful conversation with one another. That we can listen, hear each other out through all of this.”

Paul Lowell Haines, the president of Taylor, praised the vice president as a “good friend to the University over many years,” and “a Christian brother whose life and values have exemplified what we strive to instill in our graduates.”

Taylor University spokesman James Garringer said in a statement, “Since making the announcement of Vice President Mike Pence’s upcoming commencement speech, we have received feedback from people on either side of the issue. Taylor University is an intentional Christian community that strives to encourage positive, respectful and meaningful dialogue.

“We look forward to hosting the Vice President next month.”

The Maryland man who police say was attacked for wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat said he will not stop wearing the cap showing his support for President Trump.

Atsu Mable, in an appearance on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday, also said he forgives the two strangers alleged to have gone after him Saturday night in Germantown, outside of Washington, D.C.

“I have a message for love – that Jesus said in the Bible that you must love your neighbor, so I still love them,” he told Fox News. “I think whatever happened to me that day should not happen to anybody.

“I forgive them. I’m ready to make peace with them if I could see them again,” he added.

Mable said he was walking off his dinner that night when he was approached by strangers, one of which told him “you shouldn’t be wearing that hat, bro.”

“I said ‘this is not your problem – it doesn’t matter – it’s a personal reason,’” Mable told ‘Fox & Friends’.

Mable said he then walked away but felt someone punch his back, and a fight ensued. Possessions belonging to Mable were taken by the suspects and destroyed during the brawl, the Montgomery County Department of Police said in a statement.

Officers later tracked down Jovan Crawford, 27, and Scott Duncan Roberson, 25, who were: “attempting to hide among a group of children playing basketball”.

Both men are now facing numerous charges, including robbery, attempted theft, and second-degree assault.

“I like the message that the president brought back in 2015 when he was running,” Mable said.

“I’m very proud of wearing the hat,” he added, noting that he will put it on again in the future.

Hannity: Michelle Obama’s divorced dad comment ‘insulting’

Did former first lady Michelle Obama mean to demean divorced fathers?

Obama, in an interview with late-night host Stephen Colbert, compared America to a teenager and life under President Trump to living with a divorced father.

“Sometimes you spend the weekend with a divorced dad. That feels like fun but then you get sick,” Obama told Colbert. “That is what America is going through. We’re kind of living with divorced dad.”

Fox News’ Sean Hannity said Tuesday that Obama’s comments were “demeaning and insulting.”

Hannity was upset with the characterization and discussed it with Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera and Tammy Bruce.

Rivera agreed with Hannity that the comments were “demeaning and insulting” but called the comments a “rare misstep.”

“She’s equating, she’s reduced to us to us sexist stereotype with a bad parent who gives candy and lets the kids watch too much TV because we have a guilty conscience about the breakup of the marriage. I think it’s a rare misstep though Sean, in fairness,” Rivera said.

“No passes here on that,” Hannity said.

Bruce called out Obama for using gender stereotypes and not only insulting to divorced fathers but women as well.

“The problem here is it’s not just insulting to men and for every woman and man out in that audience who didn’t quite know why she was insulting them but it relies also on the other side of the coin which is the gender stereotype of women that all women are supposed to be either great mothers or only women can raise children or only women can be good parents,” Bruce said.
