Meghan Markle’s estranged sister Samantha says father is ready to testify against her in lawsuit

Just a week after the shocking announcement that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will step down from their royal duties, Markle’s father Thomas is prepared to testify against her in court.

Markle’s sister Samantha told BBC that Thomas, 75, is prepared to potentially be called as a witness in his 38-year-old daughter’s case against Associated Newspapers.

“If he is called, he will come,” said Samantha, 55.

PRINCE HARRY’S EX CRESSIDA BONAS AIRS HER FRUSTRATIONS ABOUT DATING THE ROYAL: ‘NO ONE LIKES TO BE LABELED’

Markle is suing Associated Newspapers for publishing a private letter — reportedly written to her father — in the newspaper, the Mail on Sunday.

The civil lawsuit accuses the newspaper of copyright infringement, misuse of private information and violating the U.K.’s data protection law with its publication of the letter.

Documents filed at the High Court show that the newspaper plans to rely on evidence from Thomas, stating that he “had a weighty right to tell his version of what had happened between himself and his daughter, including the contents of the letter.”

Papers drawn up by lawyers for the newspaper argue that members of Britain’s royal family “generate and rely on publicity about themselves and their lives in order to maintain the privileged positions they hold and to promote themselves.”

The paper also argues that the letter’s publication was in response to a “one-sided” article in People magazine in February 2019 that featured an interview with five unnamed “close friends” of the duchess, which referenced the letter — meaning its existence was in the public domain.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry: Who will pay for security?

Westlake Legal Group Security Meghan Markle, Prince Harry: Who will pay for security? In stepping down as “senior members” of the royal family, the question of who will pay for security for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry is one of many that are up in the air — at least to public knowledge.

Senior royals are provided with a taxpayer-funded security force by the Metropolitan Police, which Meghan and Harry’s website says is “mandated” by the Queen.

“The provision of armed security by The Metropolitan Police is mandated by the Home Office, a ministerial department of Her Majesty’s Government, responsible for security and law & order,” the website reads. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are classified as internationally protected people which mandates this level of security.”

QUEEN ISSUES STATEMENT ON MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY AFTER FAMILY TALKS, AGREES TO PART-TIME MOVE TO CANADA

This would appear to imply that the U.K. would continue to provide security for the royal couple, but Prince Harry’s desire to become “financially independent” brings the use of the publically-funded security forces into question.

Additionally, it stands to reason that security costs — which the Police and Palace do not share with the public — would rise significantly in order to accommodate deploying a detail to North America for extended periods of time.

On Monday, the Evening Standard reported that Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, said that “taxpayers in his country should pick up the huge bill for the couple’s round-the-clock protection while they are in the country.”

The report also stated that Trudeau “privately assured” Queen Elizabeth II that the safety of Harry, 35, Meghan, 38, and 8-month-old Archie would not be “jeopardized” while in Canada.

DID QUEEN ELIZABETH DROP A HINT THAT MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY MIGHT BE LOSING THEIR ROYAL TITLES

Canadian finance minister Bill Morneau, however, told CBC that there have been no discussions on the matter.

“No, we haven’t spent any time thinking about this issue,” Morneau said. “We obviously are always looking to make sure, as a member of the Commonwealth, we play a role. We have not had any discussions on that subject at this time.”

Regardless of who picks up the tab, security is a very important matter to the royal duo, as Harry’s old military comrade told BBC’s “The One Show” that protecting Archie was a big reason behind Harry’s decision to “step back” from his royal duties.

“Any husband wants to protect their wife and any father wants to protect their children,” said JJ Chalmers. “Particularly, he’s a very principal individual so when he looks at the way that the media, for example, reacts or how social media talks about someone, he has to answer to his son one day when he begins to understand this and be able to look him in the face and say ‘I made the right decision and I did right by you.'”

Chalmers added: “Ultimately, he grew up in the limelight and he knows how this can end if it’s not handled correctly.”

UK police fear Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s security costs will spiral out of control, report says

British police are bracing themselves for the worst and fear that protecting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will cost them dearly, according to a new report on Tuesday.

With the Duke and Duchess of Sussex being considered “internationally protected people,” the couple had a total of 10 specialized officers deployed to provide around-the-clock protection while they celebrated the holidays in Canada, although only six would accompany the couple at all times, according to The Times of London.

The outlet reported that Harry and Markle’s jet setting has placed a strain on London’s Met police as law enforcement is currently finding it “extremely difficult” to properly train the number of royal protection officers required to meet demand.

MEGHAN MARKLE DIDN’T CALL INTO ROYAL FAMILY SUMMIT WITH THE QUEEN BECAUSE IT WASN’T ‘NECESSARY’

Additionally, the Times said the travel costs for the trained officers had risen by more than $2.5 million last year alone.

Harry and Meghan “have not thought out the security implications of their move and have put the Met in an impossible situation,” a former Met police officer told the Times.

JUSTIN TRUDEAU ON MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY’S SECURITY COSTS: ‘WE’RE NOT ENTIRELY SURE’ IF CANADA WILL HELP

The report maintained that Harry is deemed high-risk due to his previous tour in Afghanistan as a British Army officer coupled with his current standing as captain-general of the Royal Marines.

Meanwhile, the anti-monarchy group Republic claimed the costs of royal protection has exceeded $135 million a year paid by taxpayers, according to the report, which said the couple are also demanding principals.

Meanwhile, despite reports that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had made promises directly to the Queen that Canada would pick up the security bill, Global News reports that he is unsure of Canada’s future involvement.

“There are still a lot of decisions to be taken by the Royal Family, by the Sussexes themselves as to what level of engagement they choose to have,” Trudeau said. “We are obviously supportive of their reflections but have responsibilities in that as well.

“We’re not entirely sure what the final decisions will be,” he added.

According to the Evening Standard, Canada will still provide security to the Sussexes whether or not they continue to be guarded by British royal protection officers from Scotland Yard.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have yet to reunite following Harry’s meeting with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Monday.

The meeting, dubbed the “Sandringham Summit,” was an opportunity for the Queen, Harry and other members of the royal family to reportedly “talk things through” following Harry and Meghan’s announcement that they plan to take a “step back” from their royal duties.

Markle, 38, was not present for the meeting, but it was reported that she would have potentially joined by phone from Canada, where she traveled after making the historic announcement to reunite with 8-month-old son Archie, whom she shares with Harry, 35.

Harry and Meghan have yet to reunite following the family meeting, but it appears to be the prince’s schedule that’s holding him back.

Harry is set to host the Rugby League World Cup 2021 draws for the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, according to People magazine. Harry has been a member of the Rugby Football League since 2016, when he took over his grandmother’s spot.

It is likely that following the event, Harry will travel to Canada, where he and his family will spend some time during an upcoming “period of transition,” per a statement from the Queen.

“Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives,” the Queen said. “It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the U.K.”

The statement also explains that the royal family is “entirely supportive” of Harry and Meghan and maintains that they will remain “a valued part of” the royal family.

Despite earlier reports, Meghan Markle did not join Monday’s historic royal summit with the family, who were discussing her and Prince Harry‘s future, according to a new statement from Buckingham Palace.

It was initially reported that the Duchess of Sussex, 38, would phone into the meeting with Harry, his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, father Prince Charles, and brother Prince William, however, the Sussexes decided that ultimately “it wasn’t necessary” for Meghan to join.

“In the end, The Sussexes decided that it wasn’t necessary for The Duchess to join,” the palace said in a statement (via People magazine).

Prince Charles ‘always’ wanted to work with both of his sons: report

Prince Harry‘s father had every intention of making sure his sons stick together, according to a new report.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle threw the royal family a life-changing curveball this week with the announcement that they plan to transition into part-time royals. While the rest of the family is reportedly at odds with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, a source told People that this is not what Prince Charles wanted.

“Charles has always envisioned working with both of his sons and their families in the future,” a palace insider told the outlet.

According to the magazine, Charles has wanted to create a smaller monarchy but had every intention of keeping Harry and Meghan involved.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s abrupt departure has now motivated the family to unite with the couple, the outlet claimed.

“There is a firm determination within the palace to understand Meghan and Harry’s position and help them get to a place where they feel comfortable and happy,” the source said.

BUCKINGHAM PALACE RESPONDS TO MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY’S EXIT: ‘THESE ARE COMPLICATED ISSUES’

Tensions have been running high for the royal family since the couple’s sudden announcement on Wednesday.

In addition to announcing their wish to earn their own income, Harry and Meghan also announced they will be splitting their time between living in the U.K. and North America.

An initial statement from Buckingham Palace in response to their decision hinted that the family was blindsided by the news.

“Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage,” a Palace spokesman told Fox News late Wednesday. “We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

The spokesman said that “nothing is being ruled or ruled out.”

But on Monday, the queen released her own statement separate from the palace and expressed support for the couple.

“Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family,” the reigning monarch said in a statement. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the royal family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

Harry and Meghan hinted at the daring move over the last couple of months.

For the first time ever, the couple decided to skip the queen’s tradition of celebrating Christmas in Sandringham and instead celebrated with Meghan’s mom, Doria Ragland.

Additionally, the pair announced in late 2019 that they would be breaking free from the charity they shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton. Now the question on everyone’s minds is whether or not the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be stripped of their royal titles following the family drama.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plans to separate themselves from the royal family will be ultimately unsuccessful, U.K. media correspondent Neil Sean said Tuesday.

Appearing on “Fox & Friends” with hosts Steve Doocy, Ainsley Earhardt and Brian Kilmeade, Sean said that he doesn’t believe the news of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s intentions to “step back as ‘senior’ members'” has “gone down particularly well.”

Queen Elizabeth II responded to their request on Monday in a statement, writing that she had had “very constructive discussions” and that she was “entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family.”

CANADA HASN’T DECIDED IF IT WILL PAY BILL FOR MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY’S SECURITY, SAYS FINANCE MINISTER

“Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family,” she continued.

The queen said there are still issues to be resolved but she wants the issue completed within days.

“You know, when you think about it … the queen herself, her majesty the queen has done a tremendous job — as we know,” Sean remarked. “She has been incredibly welcoming to this lady. You can take sides all you want, but she has really gone out of her way to make Meghan feel welcome.”

He told the “Friends” host that he believes any backlash Britain has received for being potentially unwelcome and racist is “a little unkind.”

“I think, while Harry is to blame, I would tell everyone that I think Harry – for me personally – is a very weak-willed type of guy,” said Sean.

“And, I think Meghan disappearing with the dogs, the baby, and going off to Canada – not facing the music – that’s not a very 21st-century woman, is it?” he asked.

Sean hypothesized that, while Harry is very much in love with Meghan, he probably didn’t see “the fact that he would have to give up everything that he knows quite so quickly to go off and follow the woman he loves to coin a phrase.”

According to reporting from The Guardian, the couple has been seeking to register the Sussex Royal brand as a global trademark.

“What are they going to do for money? Whatever they attach themselves to is not going to look good,” Sean stated. “The fact that they branded their own Instagram stuff and they’re planning to have all of these sorts of things going out is not going to work well. It’s not going to look good for the royal family and I think it makes the brand look weak.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s announcement that they “intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family” has left the world with many lingering questions — a notable one being whether they will renounce their royal titles.

At this point, there is no definitive answer as to whether Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, will continue to be known as the duke and duchess of Sussex, but a look back at past events might offer a hint at the answer.

First, it should be noted that Harry and Meghan signed their announcement as “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” inplying their continued attachment to the titles.

QUEEN ISSUES STATEMENT ON MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY AFTER FAMILY TALKS, AGREES TO PART-TIME MOVE TO CANADA

In a similar manner, the message referred to Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, his father, Prince Charles, and his brother, Prince William, by their official titles — Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Cambridge, respectively — drawing parallels between themselves and their family members.

The two have used “SussexRoyal” as their official Instagram handle and website, and according to The Guardian’s reporting, they’ve been seeking to register the Sussex Royal brand as a global trademark.

MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY: SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS TO QUEEN ELIZABETH’S STATEMENT REGARDING ROYAL EXIT

Meghan and Harry’s website also noted they would not be the only members of the royal family to engage in full-time jobs: “There is precedent for this structure and it applies to other current members of the Royal Family who support the monarch and also have full-time jobs external to their commitment to the monarchy.”

This may be in reference to Prince Andrew‘s daughters, Eugenie and Beatrice, who have held full-time jobs but retained the title of “Her Royal Highness, Princess of York.”

Also of note, Buckingham Palace and its official press materials nearly always referred to members of the royal family by their official titles, including Harry and Meghan. Even the Queen’s husband is known specifically as “Prince Philip” and Anne, the daughter of the 93-year-old Queen, is called “The Princess Royal.”

However, after a face-to-face meeting between the Queen, Harry and other members of the royal family, the Queen released a statement calling Harry and Meghan by their given names rather than their royal titles.

“My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” the statement read.

While this language differed from past protocol, Her Majesty did refer to the royal couple as “the Sussexes” once in the statement.

PRINCES WILLIAM, HARRY DENY ‘OFFENSIVE’ REPORT THAT BULLYING LED TO MEGHAN AND HARRY’S DRASTIC DECISION

“It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK,” she wrote.

The Daily Mail also reported that the Queen’s statement “could be an indicator the couple are poised to be stripped of their HRH titles.”

It’s not unheard of to keep royal titles after renouncing royal duties, however.

While Edward VIII, Elizabeth’s uncle, had to give up the title of King after his 1936 abdication, he and his wife, Wallis Simpson, kept the titles Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The two have since died.

A source told People Magazine, however, that this new case was “vastly different” from Edward’s abdication.

Charles’ ex-wife Diana also maintained the title of Princess of Wales after she and Charles divorced, but she would no longer be called “Her Royal Highness,” as Charles still is. His current wife, Camilla, is known as “Her Royal Highness, Duchess of Cornwall” rather than taking on Diana’s former title.

Amid all the speculation, a source told Vanity Fair that Meghan and Harry “are not understood to want to relinquish their royal titles and will continue to be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” but that “nothing has been ruled in or out.”

The source also claimed that tension has been running high between Harry and his grandmother since his wedding and that the Queen “feels she has done everything to smooth the path for them but this could well be the last straw.”

It appears that the Queen isn’t the only one “disappointed” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to “step back” from their royal duties.

A source told Us Weekly that 37-year-old Prince William, heir to the throne, and his wife Duchess Kate were hurt by the announcement as well.

“William’s done everything in his power to help his brother over the years and feels totally let down by his ‘reckless’ and ‘selfish’ actions,” the source said. “The way he sees it, Harry’s thrown all the good advice he gave him back in his face.”

Kate, 38, reportedly was left with hurt feelings as well.

“When Harry was feeling low or had problems, William was always there for him, as was Kate,” the insider said. “Kate’s incredibly hurt too. She acted as a mentor to Harry before Meghan came into the picture and hates seeing her husband so upset.”

The source added that the Queen was “urging” the brothers to present a united front.

“Right now, William and Harry refuse to make amends — they’re both being stubborn, especially Harry,” the source added.

William recently commented on the matter, reportedly telling a friend, “I’ve put my arm around my brother all our lives and I can’t do that anymore… I’m sad about that. All we can do, and all I can do, is try and support them and hope that the time comes when we’re all singing from the same page. I want everyone to play on the team.”

William and Harry are both expected to attend a meeting on Monday called by the Queen, their grandmother. The princes’ father, Prince Charles, is also set to appear.

The meeting is said to be an opportunity for the family to “talk things through.”

It is currently unknown if Kate will be present for the meeting, but royal experts have said she’s the Queen’s “number-one priority.”

It has also been reported that Markle possibly will join via phone.
