Antifa tries to disrupt ‘Demand Free Speech’ event in DC, reports say

Members of Antifa clashed with police Saturday after attempting to disrupt a “Demand Free Speech” rally on Saturday in Washington, D.C., according to reports.

Several members of the far-left group were seen trying to grab “Make America Great Again” hats off the heads of supporters of President Trump, the Washington Times reported.

Members of Black Lives Matter D.C. also attended, the Washington Post reported.

A “massive” group of District of Columbia police officers was assigned to the rally in an effort to prevent violence, according to the Post.

Police had broken up at least one direct clash between the conservative Proud Boys group and members of Antifa, according to the Post. Afterward, police worked to keep the two sides apart, the report said.

Antifa members were seen dragging objects into the street to impede traffic in the rally area, the Times reported.

No arrests were made, District police Chief Peter Newsham told the newspaper.

According to the Post, authorities in the nation’s capital wanted to avoid a situation similar to last month’s violence in Portland, Ore., that prompted that city’s police to use tear gas against demonstrators.

Conservative writer Andy Ngo posted photos of his injuries after he was attacked in Portland.

On Wednesday, former New York City police Commissioner Bernard Kerik told Fox News that he believes Antifa should be declared a domestic terror organization.

“This is an extremely violent group that goes out, threatens, intimidates, attacks with extreme violence for political reasons,” Kerik said on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

Conservative speakers addressing Saturday’s free-speech gathering in D.C. included Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes and writers Laura Loomer and Milo Yiannopolous, according to the Post.

Several speakers complained that they had been banned from social media because of their conservative views, the Daily Beast reported.

“I may have been the first person in history completely banned from Tinder,” speaker Greg Aselbekian shouted, according to the outlet.

Previous “Demand Free Speech” events were held in New York and San Francisco, the Post reported.

Former New York City police commissioner wants Antifa classified as a domestic terror group

A former New York City police commissioner said Wednesday that he wants to see Antifa categorized as a domestic terror organization after its members brutally beat a conservative journalist covering a protest in Portland, Ore., last week.

Andy Ngo, a reporter for the conservative-leaning publication Quillette, was attacked by members of the anti-fascism group Antifa on Saturday when far-left antifascists clashed with far-right Proud Boys.

MAJOR BROADCAST NETWORKS BARELY MENTIONED ANTIFA VIOLENCE AGAINST JOURNALIST: GROUP

“This is an extremely violent group that goes out, threatens, intimidates, attacks with extreme violence for political reasons,” Bernard “Bernie” Kerik, former NYPD commissioner, said on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight this week. Kerik started an anti-terror task force under Mayor Giuliani’s administration, and Giuliani now represents President Trump.

“I think they should be designated as a terror group, a domestic terror group,” Kerik told anchor Brian Kilmeade, who was filling in for Tucker Carlson. Kerik equated Antifa to radical left militant organizations in the 60s, 70s and 80s like the Black Liberation army, the Black Panther Party and Weather Underground.

Ngo posted images of the aftermath on Twitter — showing cuts and bruises on his face. Some reports said he was hospitalized for a “bleeding braining” following the alleged attack. He said attackers also stole his camera equipment.

Kerik also said he was “appalled” at the Portland Police Department for not being more “active, preemptive and reactive” to Antifa gatherings in the city. He said he knows from his experience as police commissioner that the department knows in advance where protests will be held and roughly how many people will be there.

“I can tell you under Rudy Giuliani back when I was police commissioner, this would be absolutely all hands on deck to make sure this didn’t happen,” he said. Kerik went on to say that attacks in which journalists are “severely beaten, not just smacked around” seem to be growing in states with Democratic governors and cities with Democratic mayors.

“They knock people off the air, off of social media these conservative just for a comment,” Kerik said of bias toward conservatives. “I watched these beat downs, dozens of different videos on anti-conservative sites over the last four or five days. Just outrageous,” he said.

Violent clashes in Portland, Ore., prompt call for anti-mask laws

Authorities in Portland, Ore., are calling for a series of laws to curb violent clashes at demonstrations that include prohibiting masks worn by protesters, allowing police to videotape demonstrations and giving the city greater control over events organized by groups with violent histories.

“We cannot allow people to continue to use the guise of free speech to commit a crime,’’ police Chief Danielle Outlaw said in a Wednesday news conference addressing last week’s violence that occurred when three competing demonstrations converged downtown.

“We cannot allow people to continue to use the guise of free speech to commit a crime.’’

Several people were injured in connection with demonstrations as marchers with an anti-fascist group clashed with conservative protesters with the Proud Boys and supporters of the #HimToo movement. Conservative writer Andy Ngo was assaulted by Antifa members and spent the night in an emergency room.

About 15 states and some countries have anti-mask laws, the Oregonian reported. Opponents argue such laws would deprive people anonymity to express their views and would violate their First Amendment rights.

“We looked into it previously and the constitutional free speech issues are difficult to overcome, at least in Oregon, said Tim Crail, chief of staff for Portland Commissioner Amanda Fritz.

Outlaw said the issue was a matter of public safety. Portland has been the site of several violent demonstrations between Antifa supporters and conservative demonstrators in recent months.

Ngo, who covered Antifa for the website Quillette, was kicked in the head and had objects thrown at him.

“A lot of people are emboldened because they know they can’t be identified,’’ Outlaw said.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon said it doubts a policy prohibiting masks could be enforced in a constitutional manner.

“A policy that prohibits wearing a mask to a protest will have police focusing on the wrong issue,” Sarah Armstrong, a spokeswoman for the group, told the paper. “Behavior is the issue, not the mask,” she said. “It could be argued that the mask is an important symbolic part of a protester’s message. …  There are many legitimate reasons people wear ‘masks,’ including political and religious reasons.”

Ambassador Grenell: Human Rights Campaign should ‘cease to exist’ if they stay silent on Antifa attack

The U.S. Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell slammed organizations like the Human Rights Campaign for their silence in light of the attack on conservative journalist Andy Ngo over the weekend.

Ngo was videotaped being punched, kicked and doused with a milkshake by Antifa members during a clash between them and a right-wing group on Saturday in Portland. The footage did not show what led up to the attack or what followed, but there did not appear to be a police presence.

Grenell, a friend of Ngo’s, told “America’s Newsroom” Tuesday that he believes Antifa targeted Ngo for his political affiliations, as well as his race and sexuality.

“They knew that he is gay, that he’s Asian, and that he is conservative,” Grenell said.

ATTORNEY FOR JOURNALIST ATTACKED BY ANTIFA SAYS SHE PLANS TO ‘SUE EVERYBODY’ THE LAW PERMITS

“We are now in a situation where the largest gay and lesbian groups have stayed silent, not only stayed silent, but their spokeswoman has tried to change it around to say he deserves this,” he continued.

The ambassador referred to the Human Rights Campaign, an organization which does not appear to have made a public statement about the attack on Ngo. Their press secretary, Charlotte Clymer, condemned the violence in a tweet to her personal Twitter account, but highlighted Ngo’s history as a provocateur.

PORTLAND MAYOR SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY FEDS OVER ANTIFA ATTACK ON CONSERVATIVE WRITER, SEN. CRUZ SAYS

“Andy Ngo intentionally provokes people on the left to drive his content. Being attacked today on video taken by an actual journalist (because Ngo is definitely not) is the greatest thing that could have happened to his career,” she wrote on Sunday.

“Violence is completely wrong, and I find it sad and weak to allow a sniveling weasel like Andy Ngo to get under one’s skin like this, but I’m also not going to pretend that this wasn’t Ngo’s goal from the start,” she continued.

Grenell called the comments “completely wrong” and insinuated that the organization is staying silent because Ngo is conservative and of Asian descent.

“This is an organization that demands to have a voice, and if they are not going to use their voice across the board in every situation when a gay person is bashed like this, then they should cease to exist,” he said.

The Oregon clash between Antifa and conservative demonstrators was “complete anarchy and lawlessness,” according to a journalist injured in an attack by alleged members of the group.

Andy Ngo told Todd Starnes Monday on “The Todd Starnes Show” he was covering the Portland demonstration Saturday when the protesters turned their attention to him.

“I moved towards the front of the march with my GoPro and my camera, and what I recall is somebody ran hard into behind me and hit me very hard in the back of my head,” he said.

“They were marching, ironically, in front of the Oregon Justice Center — which houses the sheriff’s office and a Portland police precinct — so we were surrounded by all these institutions that represent the rule of law.

ANTIFA-PROUD BOYS CONFRONTATION IN PORTLAND TURNS VIOLENT, CONSERVATIVE WRITER INJURED

“And yet, what happened was complete anarchy and lawlessness.”

The journalist said Portland police did not immediately come to his aid, adding he later watched video of nearly a dozen people pummeling him in the street and dousing him with unknown substances.

“Before I could realize what was happening and remove myself from the situation, the punches and kicks kept coming from every direction,” he said.

“When it was happening I didn’t know how many people were hitting me. It felt like I couldn’t tell if it was five or ten or 20.

“They continued to hit me and they threw what I think were milkshakes and eggs and possibly pepper spray all over me.”

Ngo said just before he was attacked, the demonstrators were chanting a phrase he found ironic.

“No hate, no fear,” he recalled.

When the police failed to appear, Ngo said he continued to try to break away from the melee.

PORTLAND MAYOR SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY FEDS OVER ANTIFA ATTACK ON CONSERVATIVE WRITER, SEN. CRUZ SAYS

When the journalist finally reached an area near the Multnomah County courthouse, he said he was told to head back toward where he was attacked.

“In order to get help, I had to walk back in the direction of protesters,” he said.

In the aftermath, Portland police released a statement about the protest.

“During today’s events, there were multiple assaults reported, as well as projectiles thrown at demonstrators and officers,” the statement read.

“There were also reports of pepper spray and bear spray being used by people in the crowd. Officers deployed pepper spray during the incident. There were reports of individuals throwing ‘milkshakes’ with a substance mixed in that was similar to a quick-drying cement. One subject was arrested for throwing a substance during the incident.”

In the wake of the alleged attack on Ngo, one Republican lawmaker has called for an investigation of city officials.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler should be investigated by federal law enforcement officials following his handling of the protests, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Sunday.

“To federal law enforcement: investigate & bring legal action against a mayor who has, for political reasons, ordered his police officers to let citizens be attacked by domestic terrorists,” Cruz tweeted alongside a story recapping the incident surrounding Ngo.

Portland, Ore., police responded to a brawl outside a bar Wednesday night, where members of far-left Antifa clashed with those from the conservative Proud Boys group, according to reports.

People from both sides fought and sprayed bear repellent and pepper spray at each other, the reports said.

The fight happened after a day of generally peaceful May Day protests across the city. Hundreds of people rallied for the rights of immigrants, workers and other marginalized groups, specifically at gatherings in Elizabeth Caruthers Park, Holladay Park and Chapman Square.

FBI PROBING ANTIFA PLOT TO BUY GUNS FROM MEXICAN CARTEL, ‘STAGE AN ARMED REBELLION AT THE BORDER’

No arrests were made and no force was used by police during any of the free speech assemblies, according to a statement late Wednesday from the Portland Police Department.

However, one video posted by a freelance journalist Mike Bivins appeared to show that a woman had been knocked unconscious. The circumstances relating to the video weren’t immediately clear.

In another post, journalist and photographer Andy Ngo claims to have been pepper-sprayed by an Antifa demonstrator. Ngo then appears to drop the camera and fall back before the video ends.

In 2017, 25 people were arrested in Portland after a peaceful protest turned into a riot on May Day, OregonLive reported.

One group assembling Wednesday wore clothes and American flag helmets affiliated with the Proud Boys, Oregon Live reported. Others in the video can be seen wearing all-black attire and bandanas over their faces, a style typically associated with Antifa members.

Police arrived at the bar at 8:30 p.m. to interview witnesses, Oregon Live reported. No arrests were announced related to the brawl.

Antifa — short for antifascist — is the term used for those who say they oppose neo-Nazis, racists and other hate groups. Most recently, the FBI was investigating a possible Antifa plot to buy guns from a Mexican cartel and stage an armed rebellion against U.S. law enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Proud Boys describe themselves as “Western chauvinists who refuse to apologize for creating the modern world.” Facebook and Instagram banned the organization in October based on the platform’s policies against hate speech.

The FBI is investigating a supposed radical far-left Antifa plot to “stage an armed rebellion” and “disrupt U.S. law enforcement and military security operations at the US/Mexican border.”

Word of the probe comes after years of the FBI putting greater emphasis on the threat of Antifa activities, with bureau Director Christopher Wray saying the agency is looking into the ideology and individuals associated with the movement.

But according to a December FBI document obtained by the San Diego Union-Tribune, the agency is now tackling actual alleged plots of possible criminal activities that would affect U.S. homeland security.

The FBI report, which wasn’t posted online because the matter is still active, alleged that the anti-fascist activists were looking into buying firearms from a “Mexico-based cartel associate known as Cobra Commander” that would be used to “stage an armed rebellion at the border.”

It also warns that the Antifa activists “planned to disrupt U.S. law enforcement and military security operations at the US/Mexican border.”

The document reportedly was shared with multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the CIA and the National Security Administration.

Two law enforcement officials told the Tribune that the investigation is still ongoing but no one has been charged. The leaked document, meanwhile, is an information report supposed to be read only by law enforcement officials, though no security clearance is required.

“This is an information report, not finally evaluated intelligence,” the six-page report states, according to the newspaper. “Receiving agencies are requested not to take action based on this raw reporting without prior coordination with the FBI.”

But two individuals named in the report, Cobra Commander Ivan Riebeling and Evan Duke, say that the alleged plot was unlikely and doesn’t make much sense.

“It doesn’t make any sense that someone in the United States would purchase guns in Mexico,” Riebeling told the Tribune.

“And the Hondurans certainly didn’t bring money to buy guns. It doesn’t make any sense; in fact it’s extremely absurd to say the Hondurans wanted to attack the United States at the border.”

Anarchists in Portland, Oreg., flooded the office of a local lawyer representing officers of the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency in an effort to intimidate him.

The city has long been the epicenter of the so-called “Occupy ICE” movement and other anarchist activities, culminating last year in a clash between ICE officers and the protesters who then managed to shut down an ICE facility.

ICE UNION WANTS PORTLAND MAYOR TO FACE CRIMINAL PROBE OVER ACTIONS DURING OCCUPY ICE PROTESTS

A mob of anarchists continued their reign in the city last weekend, pushing a garden hose through the mail slot at the law office of Sean Riddell and flooding the building’s floor and basement, Willamette Week reported.

The water was not discovered until days later, resulting in damage to the property, including its wooden floors, carpet and the ceiling in the basement. The lawyer said the act of vandalism will cost him thousands of dollars to repair, though the cost is likely to be covered by insurance.

Riddell has been representing the National ICE Council, the union for federal immigration officers. Last year the union grabbed headlines after sending letters to officials, asking them to conduct a criminal investigation of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler over his handling of the 38-day Occupy ICE protests in the city last summer.

The group also filed claims that the city’s police declined to intervene and disperse the protesters who were besieging an ICE facility.

The anonymous anarchists claimed responsibility for the water damage in an email to Willamette Week on Monday, admitting that they did it because of Riddell’s work with the federal immigration agency.

“We decided to congratulate him on his new building by unraveling his garden hose, pushing it through his mail slot, and turning on the water,” the anonymous email read.

It added that Riddell’s office was the target as he bought it with the money he received from representing the ICE union and claimed that this is a warning to other lawyers who are working or are planning to work with the agency.

“Our goal was to cause maximum economic damage, that should serve as a warning to all individuals and businesses that profit off the human misery perpetrated by ICE,” the email added.

Riddell slammed the vandals, telling the Willamette Week that at least he doesn’t hide behind the cloak of anonymity. “When I make a political statement, or when I make a political statement on behalf of a client. I sign my name,” he said.

“I’m not a victim,” he said. “I’m just doing my job.”
