Missouri woman hunts down thieves, steals car back: report

A Missouri woman with no background in police work tracked down the suspects who stole her car, then stole the car right back, according to a Monday report.

Kansas City resident Danielle Reno told KCTV5 that her Toyota 4Runner was stolen while she was at a gas station with her daughter.

“I got out of my car, grabbed my daughter, and my car was gone,” Reno said.

Reno filed a report with authorities, then took matters into her own hands, the station reported.

By tracking purchases on her credit cards and the activity of her phone – which were in the stolen vehicle – Reno said she managed to narrow in on the suspects.

“We stalked this lady for 48 hours. She had no idea what we were doing,” Reno said.

A QuickTrip attendant told Reno the car thieves were on their way to an Applebee’s, KCTV5 reported. At the restaurant, Reno said she saw one of the suspects walk in with her wallet and keys.

“Got our waters and she walked in the door,” Reno said. “I about had a heart attack.”

Reno said left the restaurant and took back her car. She told KCTV5 that the interior of the car had been thrashed and she didn’t want to drive it anymore.

Clay County deputies reportedly arrested the suspects. Authorities told KCTV5 that citizens are ill-advised to conduct investigations on their own, but noted that Reno never put herself in danger.

Police in California said they’re looking for the man who was captured on surveillance video allegedly stealing a dog outside a San Francisco market over the weekend.

The dog’s owner, Jenny Seta, posted Saturday on Facebook that her golden retriever named Lily was stolen outside Nijiya Market in Japantown. She said it happened on Saturday around 5 p.m.

“I went into the market for less than ten minutes. She was waiting for me outside the market. She was secured to a post,” Seta told Fox News. “When I got out she was gone and I asked the store to view their surveillance footage and that’s when we saw the video of the man taking her.”

When asked what her initial reaction was, Seta told Fox News, “It was a just a nightmare.”

She added, “My immediate thought was someone stole her and I really thought I would never see her again.”

However, Seta was not giving up.

Seta said she recorded the video from the market’s surveillance system and gave the video to the San Francisco Police Department.  She also posted the video on her Facebook page.

Seta asked people to share the video and to keep an eye out for her dog and people selling golden retrievers.

“I really appreciate all those who are helping with the search; the community, people on Facebook who continue to share the video, the police,” Seta told Fox News.

“Lily is 5 years 11 months and weighs about 60lbs,” Seta wrote on her Facebook page. “She is small and slender for a golden and very loving and affectionate.”

Seta told Fox News she said spent more than eight hours on Sunday walking and driving around San Francisco trying to find her dog.

Police in northern California have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the murder of an adult bookstore clerk during an armed robbery.

Modesto Police say Favian Ramirez faces murder and robbery charges in the death of 38-year-old Cinnamon Eades. He is being held without bail.

Officers responding to the Liberty Adult Books shop found Eades bleeding on the floor behind the counter at approximately 2:15 p.m. Tuesday. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died from her injuries.

An arrest was announced in the case of a “hamburglar” who broke into two restaurants, fixed himself a burger in one and then stole money.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office says Patrick Benson was arrested Saturday after he was caught on video inside a Wendy’s and another restaurant in Jensen Beach, Fla., after hours.

Benson, 34, was accused of gaining access after smashing a window with a brick.

“Once in, he casually worked his way around the establishments and selected the items he was going to steal,” the sheriff’s office said. “In one case, he fired up the grill and cooked himself a hamburger before stealing the safe.”

Deputies said that after posting photos of the suspect on Facebook Friday they got multiple tips “about who the suspected ‘hamburglar’ might be.”

2 French bulldogs stolen in Arizona are found in California 18 months later, report says

Two of five French bulldogs stolen last year in Arizona reportedly were found in California 18 months later.

Chris Kriaris told Fox 10 in Phoenix his dog was stolen on Jan. 10, 2018, when the animal was just a puppy. Surveillance video from that day showed two men leaving a mall in Tempe, about a 15-minute drive from Phoenix. The men stole five French bulldog puppies from Animal Kingdom Pet Store using a big trash can, according to Tempe police.

The Tempe Police Department posted pictures of the stolen puppies on the department’s Facebook page last year, shortly after they were snatched.

Kriaris told Fox 10 he bought one of the puppies named “Goat” shortly before the dog was stolen but the pup was not allowed to leave the store at the time of purchase because it was on a 14-day hold while medicated.

“It was a horrible thing to go through,” Kriaris told the television station. “Days went into weeks [and] weeks went into months – and you do lose hope.”

Marilyn Monroe statue stolen from atop Hollywood art space

A stainless steel statue of Marilyn Monroe that stood atop a two-story Hollywood public art space near the famous Walk of Fame for 25 years vanished Monday.

The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation into the missing sculpture, which depicted the iconic actress — whose birth name was Norma Jeane Mortenson —  in a scene from the 1955 film “The Seven Year Itch.”

“I am calling this the great Marilyn caper of 2019,” Los Angeles Councilman Mitch O’Farrell told KNBC-TV. “We have a witness who saw someone climb this structure and saw off the statue at the top.”

Security camera footage appears to show someone jump down from the artwork and walk away with a backpack, the station reported. It was not clear what was in the bag.

The footage does not show the theft.

The small statue was perched above the “Four Ladies of Hollywood” gazebo, which pays tribute to women in film, on a spire that spelled out “Hollywood” from top to bottom.

Legendary actresses Mae West, Dorothy Dandridge, Anna May Wong and Dolores del Río make up the gazebo’s pillars. Investigators have recovered fingerprints from the structure, which was erected in 1994.

“We got a few prints with our experts up there,” LAPD Det. Douglas Oldfield told the station. “We noticed the suspect used the Ws as footing.”

Monroe died in 1962 at age 36. She is considered one of the film industry’s most iconic figures.

Former Alaska bank employee sentenced to 10 years in brazen $4.3 million theft

He almost got away with it.

Gerardo Adan Cazarez Valenzuela, a former Alaska bank employee, was sentenced Monday to 10 years in federal prison for crimes related to a 2011 bank heist that included a private jet, AK-47, a vault timer and a fake ice cream social event to be used as a diversion, authorities said.

The crime took planning. Valenzuela, cash vault services manager at a KeyBank in Anchorage, stole $30,000 from the vault prior to the heist to rent a private jet that would fly him from Alaska to Seattle.

On the day of the heist in July 2011, Valenzuela told his supervisor he was staying late to organize an ice cream social for bank customers, authorities said. Instead, he took the cash inside the vault and boarded the private plane to Seattle.

He set the timer on the vault to lock for six days to give him enough time to leave the country, prosecutors said in a statement.

In Seattle, Valenzuela, 34, bought a car and AK-47 rifle and drove with his girlfriend to Mexico. Their destination was his uncle’s home in the Mexican state of Sonora. During a random search by Mexican authorities on Aug. 2, the rifle, ammunition and $3.8 million in cash were found.

Valenzuela was not given any credit for the time he served in Mexico after his conviction for smuggling cash, guns and ammunition during his getaway, U.S. prosecutors said. He was extradited to Alaska last year and pleaded guilty to the bank theft in January.

Valenzuela stashed $500,000 in Washington but the money has never been recovered, authorities said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
