Man arrested after gunfire at Chicago hospital for military veterans, cops say

A suspect is in custody after shots were fired outside a 200-bed hospital on Chicago’s West Side that provides care to about 62,000 military veterans, authorities said.

Officials reported that there were no injuries.

Tom Ahern, a police spokesman, said the man began shooting outside the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center Monday afternoon and tried to enter the lobby.

He said security officers apprehended the man near the hospital entrance. Police took the man into custody.

“Nobody was hurt, there was nobody injured, there was nobody hit,” Jeffrey Sallet, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Chicago field office, said, according to Fox 32. “We avoided tragedy here in the city of Chicago today.”

Authorities recovered a rifle that the man is believed to have used.

Ahern said investigators haven’t determined what led to the gunfire or who the man might have been targeting.

Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth gave viewers a glimpse into the camaraderie that he and others shared as they swam across the Hudson in support of military vets and their families.

“Fox & Friends” caught up with him during the “Navy SEAL Hudson River Swim and Run” on Saturday. The event, hosted by the GI Go fund, was the first-ever legally sanctioned swim across the Hudson River.

According to the event site, SEALs were scheduled to “make stops at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island before arriving in Battery Park.”

NAVY SEALS TO SWIM ACROSS THE HUDSON RIVER TO SUPPORT VETERANS

“At each stop, SEALs will perform pushups and pullups to honor America’s liberties, diversity, and those who have fought to preserve them,” the website read. “Upon their arrival at Battery Park, the SEALs will run towards One World Trade Center and end their journey at the America’s Response Monument.”

Hegseth said that he wanted to participate because of the admiration he had for servicemembers.

“Well, I’m in awe of these guys and what they do and how many of them left it all on the battlefield,” he said.

He added that the risk he took of jumping in the Hudson was “nothing” compared to the risks that servicemembers took.

“To get to do this on a beautiful day in New York City, it’s an honor and a blessing,” he said.

One of the SEALs described the brotherhood he shared with other servicemembers at the event.

“It’s a brotherhood and it’s where our country came together after 9/11 — no matter all our differences, we all came together after that to fight for freedom,” he said.

A dog found in the woods in Tennessee with a severed leg was adopted by a veteran this week who also lost a leg.

Joshua Ferguson, who lost his leg after an IED explosion, adopted a three-legged pup named Scooter on Thursday from the Humane Society of Dickson County in Dickson, Tenn., Nashville’s WTVF-TV reported.

OHIO WOMAN WITH DOG LICK INFECTION HAS LEGS, PARTS OF ARMS AMPUTATED AFTER SPENDING DAYS IN COMA

“He makes it easier for me to remember, hey it’s still a beautiful day,” Ferguson said of his new pet. “You realize really just how tremendous a journey life is.”

The dog was found in the woods with a badly severed leg in June by fishermen at Johnson Creek near Burns, Tenn., WTVF reported. Animal doctors believed the dog might have gotten his leg stuck on something in the forest and gnawed it off in order to break free to find food. Scooter’s leg was amputated at the Animal Medical Hospital.

Ferguson said he was one of five soldiers in a truck that rolled over an improvised explosive device. He lost his leg in the explosion, but all five in the truck survived. To his condition, he said: “There’s silver linings to anything, you can find something, and even if you can’t, somebody’s had it worse! So stop complaining.”

The veteran said he’s blessed to be alive and now to have his new pet. “It’s impossible to not smile around him,” Ferguson told the station. “Everybody’s so happy to see him, then they notice he’s got 3 legs. ‘He’s happy you were overjoyed to see him, don’t pity him!'”

WATCH: Veteran climbs flag pole, fixes American flag at Navy SEAL monument

A veteran has captured the hearts of social media users after he climbed a flag pole at the Navy SEAL monument in Virginia to fix a loose American flag.

Dom Raso, a former SEAL himself, says he was on his morning run Thursday in Virginia Beach when he spotted the flag out of place and broken off the pole.

Video posted on Facebook shows Raso climbing up the pole and then clipping the flag’s loose end to the pole, before sliding back down.

AMERICAN SOLDIER GETS SURPRISE FROM HIS PARENTS FOLLOWING EMOTIONAL HOMECOMING

“This was my fourth attempt at trying to get up and fix the flag,” Raso said. “I couldn’t go by this flag this morning and not give it everything I had. The gold stars on this monument and the sacrifice that has been made for us all was something I wasn’t just going to pass by. This flag pole climb reminded me about EVERYTHING in life.”

In another post, Raso encourages his fellow Americans to continue to “step up and do what is right.”

“It doesn’t take many, it just takes a determined and convicted few,” he said. “I believe with all my heart and soul there is a wave of patriots in this country growing in strength and confidence each day. More than 1,000 people attend Michigan funeral for Vietnam veteran

Hundreds of people showed up at a Michigan funeral Wednesday to mourn a Vietnam War veteran who passed away with no surviving family members.

Friends of Wayne Lee Wilson anticipated that only a few people would pay their respects, but the Brown Funeral Home in Niles changed that by posting Wilson’s obituary on Facebook and inviting the public to pay their respects.

FUNERAL FOR VIETNAM WAR VET, 77, WHO DIED ALONE, DRAWS HUNDREDS OF MOURNERS

“Dignitaries have funerals like this,” Wilson’s close friend Charlotte Andrews told the Detroit Free Press. “Who would have thought that a simple man with simple ideas and a simple way of life would have been able to have such an enormous amount of people to be able to send him off?”

Wilson died May 28 with no close family members, so his friends arranged for him to be buried with military honors. Wilson served in the Army from 1971 to 1977 and was wounded during his military service.

“We found out that this particular veteran does not have any family; and as color guard, we honor every veteran,” said Petra Bernard of the Osceola American Legion Post 308. “Every veteran deserves to have their military rights, so we made sure that we came out here to pay our respects to this soldier.”

Wilson often wore his service medals, flew a flag on his motorized scooter and would place flags at the graves of deceased veterans in Silverbrook Cemetery, where he was ultimately laid to rest, according to to the Free Press. People around Niles often called him “Sarge.”

“It said on Facebook he didn’t have any family. He does have family,” Ohio resident Kenneth Creech told WNDU-TV. “Everybody that stepped foot in Vietnam is a brother.”

In brief remarks, Niles Mayor Nick Shelton thanked Wilson and others like him.

“General George S. Patton Jr. said it best: ‘It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather, we should thank God that such men lived,'” Shelton said. “Thank God for Wayne Wilson and thank you all for being a part of his legacy.”

Ex-Marine accused by Spain of North Korean embassy break-in freed on bail

A former U.S. Marine accused of breaking into North Korea’s embassy in Madrid and assaulting diplomatic personnel was freed on $1.3 million bond in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

As a condition of his release, Christopher Ahn must confine himself to his home in the Los Angeles suburb of Chino Hills ahead of his possible extradition to Spain and must wear an ankle monitor.

CALLS GROW TO DROP CASE AGAINST US MARINE AND ACTIVIST AND ACTIVISTS IN NORTH KOREA EMBASSY INTRUSION

“I spent a lot of time reading about you and I’m confident you’re going to do the right thing,” U.S. Magistrate Judge Jean Rosenbluth told Ahn, who had several family members in attendance at the hearing.

Ahn can only leave his home for medical appointments and church. He is expected to be released in the coming days.

Spanish authorities have charged Ahn, 38, who spent six years in the Marines and served in Iraq, with breaking into the North Korean embassy with five others on February 22. They said the group beat some embassy staff and held them hostage for hours before fleeing.

The charges include breaking and entering, robbery with violence and causing injuries, according to U.S. court documents.

NORTH KOREAN REFUGEE: WE TOOK HUGE RISKS TO HELP OTHERS REACH FREEDOM. WHY ARE US, SPAIN PUNISHING US?

Ahn is said to be a member of Free Joseon, or the Cheollima Civil Defense, an activist group which supports North Korean defectors and seeks to overthrown North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Two people allegedly involved in the embassy incident are still at large, including Adrian Hong, a Mexican national and longtime U.S. resident who is the purported leader of the group.

Attorneys for Free Joseon said the allegations of violence are lies from Kim’s diplomats, who they say made up the story to save their own skins. They claim the group members were invited inside and that there were no problems.

“The extradition papers from Spain confirm that almost the entire case against Mr. Ahn is based on uncorroborated statements made by high-ranking North Korean officials,” Ahn’s attorney Naeun Rim told Fox News in a statement last week.

Video obtained by Fox News shows the activists walking into the embassy and chatting with a member of Kim’s diplomatic corps. One activist takes official photographs of Kim and his father Kim Jong II from a wall and smashes them on the floor.

Ahn was arrested by U.S. agents in April in Los Angeles. His actions have made him a target of the Kim regime, Rosenbluth said in an order conditionally granting him bail.

Prosecutors objected to Ahn’s release, citing him as a flight risk.

“It’s like a huge weight has been lifted off of our shoulders knowing that he’s going to be home, he’s going to be with loved ones, we can visit with him now,” Juan Sanabria, a former Marine who served with Ahn, told Reuters.
