A fierce tornado tearing through Arkansas on Saturday left six people injured and caused major damage to a local shopping mall and airport.

Extensive damage occurred at the Mall at Turtle Creek in Jonesboro, although most stores were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. A Best Buy store was rendered nearly unrecognizable.

“At 5 o’clock on a Saturday afternoon that place would’ve been packed, and at this point there was hardly anyone in there,” Jonesboro E-911 Director Jeff Presley said. “It’s a blessing in disguise.”

Those hurt in the college city of roughly 75,000 people — about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock — were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Presley said. The National Weather Service issued tornado warning around 4:47 p.m. local time and the twister touched down just after 5 p.m., per the Washington Post.

Photos of a destroyed hangar and a graveyard of planes were also captured at the Jonesboro Municipal Airport.

One resident recorded video from inside his phone shop of the massive tornado tossing debris around like it was nothing.

U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford, D-Ark., described the effects of the twister and called for support for the community.

“In the midst of everything, a tornado just went through the heart of town,” Crawford added. “None of my staff have been hurt and my family are okay. Unsure of others – please pray for first responders now being dispatched.”

A livestream by KAIT-TV in Jonesboro showed extensive damage to some of the city’s businesses. Arkansas State University said on Twitter that its campus wasn’t damaged.

Power was out in sections of the city and some of the wreckage tossed by the tornado was seen blocking roads. Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin issued a 7 p.m. curfew, and authorities asked people not to drive around.

The home of Dr. Jared Burks, who has been living apart from his wife Alyssa and their son Zeke in Northeast Arkansas while he treats patients with COVID-19 was completely destroyed, per Little Rock’s KATV-TV. All three family members were safe.

Forecasters with the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., warned that a severe weather outbreak was possible later Saturday for much of the central U.S.

An Arkansas police officer was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop Tuesday night, according to multiple reports.

Officer Brent Scrimshire of the Hot Springs Police Department was taken to a hospital and later died from his injuries.

The suspect was also shot during the exchange of gunfire, but the gunman’s name and medical condition were not immediately disclosed.

Other departments in the area tweeted their condolences to the family of the fallen officer, as well as the Hot Springs police.

The Pulaski County Sherriff’s office — located roughly 50 miles northeast of Hot Springs — said it was “heartbroken” and the department “lost a hero tonight.”

Farther north, the Conway Police Department said their thoughts were with Scrimshire’s family. They added that “We stand with you.”

Conservative lawmakers, commentators labeled ‘racist’ for calling COVID-19 ‘Chinese’ or ‘Wuhan’ virus

Chinese officials are pushing back on the expression “Wuhan coronavirus” — saying the name used frequently by American conservative leaders and commentators to describe the place COVID-19 originated unfairly stigmatizes the Asian nation and borders on being racist.

The coronavirus was first detected in Wuhan, China, in December. At that time, many media around the world began referring to it as the “Wuhan virus.” But last month, after some pressure, the World Health Organization renamed the illness COVID-19 in an effort to destigmatize a specific location or group of people.

The name change didn’t stop some, like Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who blew past warnings and deliberately referred to it as the “Wuhan virus” after China’s foreign ministry called it “highly irresponsible” to do so.

Zhao Lijian, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, said that his country firmly opposes it.

Arkansas Republican Sen. Tom Cotton has frequently used the term on the Senate floor.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., faced backlash online for calling the disease “the Chinese coronavirus.”

“Everything you need to know about the Chinese coronavirus can be found on one, regularly-updated website,” McCarthy wrote, linking to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, which refers to it as Coronavirus Disease 2019 or COVID-19.

Economist David Rothschild tweeted at McCarthy, “Our government is super racist: also they really suck at keeping US safe and prosperous.”

Dr. Eugene Gu, founder and CEO of Cool Quit, tweeted: “So now it’s the Chinese coronavirus? Why is racism against Asians so widely accepted and tolerated in this country?”

Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., who is among one of the members of Congress in self-quarantine, wrote on his personal Twitter account that he and three members of his senior staff are under self-quarantine after coming into “contact at CPAC with a person who has since been hospitalized with the Wuhan Virus. My office will be closed for the week.”

Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California slammed his congressional colleagues who referred to the disease as the “Wuhan virus.” Lieu said using the phrase is “an example of the myopia that allowed it to spread in the US. The virus is not constrained by country or race.”

He tweeted, “#COVID2019 can be carried by anyone: a US citizen, a Japanese tourist, an undocumented youth, or a Member of Congress. #Coronavirus doesn’t care about your party, your gender or religion. It’s not Chinese, it’s a virus.”

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson has also come under fire for referring to COVID-19 as the “Chinese Coronavirus.”

“The Chinese Coronavirus epidemic turns out to be just that, an epidemic. There’s no denying that now,” he said Monday, prompting some to call him out for his choice of words.

Tom Cotton: If I added vodka to my milk on the Senate floor, Schiff would’ve accused me of collusion

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., who was required to sit through the entirety of Wednesday’s marathon Senate impeachment trial session, noted how senators are only allowed milk or water on the Senate floor.

Until 1966, senators were only allowed to drink water on the floor of the chamber. That year, Senate Majority Leader Everett Dirksen, R-Ill., asked the presiding officer if he could summon a page to bring him a glass of milk.

“Is it in violation of the Senate rules if the senator for Illinois asks one of the page boys to go to the restaurant and bring him a glass of milk?” Dirksen asked at the time. The presiding officer allowed the motion.

Cotton told “The Ingraham Angle” that at one point during Wednesday’s session, he chose to forgo water and drink the rarely-chosen milk.

SCHIFF WARNS OF RUSSIAN ATTACK ON US MAINLAND DURING DAY 2 OF TRUMP IMPEACHMENT TRIAL

He joked with host Laura Ingraham that he had to be careful to keep his milk pure so as not to upset Lead Impeachment Manager Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

“I guess I could’ve put some vodka in it — minus the Kahlua — that would’ve been a White Russian,” he said.

“But I think Adam Schiff might’ve accused me of collusion if I would’ve had a white Russian to drink.”

Some Republicans have criticized Schiff in the past for repeatedly claiming President Trump colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election.

Almost immediately after Chief Justice John Roberts gaveled in Wednesday’s session, bored and weary senators started openly flouting some basic guidelines. The Associated Press reported that a Democrat in the back row leaned on his right arm, covered his eyes and stayed that way for nearly a half-hour, and some lawmakers openly snickered when Schiff said he’d speak for only 10 minutes.

“I do see the members moving and taking a break,” freshman Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., one of the House prosecutors, said mid-speech at the center podium. “I probably have another 15 minutes.”

“You just have to stretch and you just got to stand. Those chairs, they look nice, [but] they are not comfortable chairs,” Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said of the restlessness while Schiff spoke.

Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, suggested at one point that military aid to Ukraine was essential so the U.S. would not have to fight Russians at home, as soldiers did in the videogame “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.”

Both sides of the aisle call for fair, dignified Senate impeachment trial: ‘It’s a process of democracy’

With President Trump‘s impeachment trial looming in the Senate, lawmakers and politicians on both sides of the aisle are calling for managers to follow the Constitution and keep to a fair and balanced approach.

Appearing on “Cavuto LIVE,” Arkansas Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson said he believes the trial under Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., will be very similar to the one held for the Bill Clinton impeachment.

NEWT GINGRICH: TRUMP IMPEACHMENT WILL BRING PELOSI AND HOUSE DEMOCRATS CONDEMNATION BY HISTORY

“The fallout in terms of our constitutional process is that we have to recognize this is a trial. It’s not going to be the circus atmosphere it was in the House. It will be a lot more dignified and orderly because you have the chief justice presiding over it,” the former Clinton impeachment manager said.

Hutchinson said that because the process will be more dignified, the American public will give the procedings in the Senate more credibility.

He told host Neil Cavuto that the Senate has set a “high bar” for impeachment, but there is a lot which has yet to unfold.

“And,what we learned from history is that our democracy is strong and our constitutional process works when you follow it closely,” he said.

Appearing on the show immediately following Hutchinson, 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Michael Bennet told Cavuto that he believes the Senate has a “constitutional duty to fulfill.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of Calif., fourth from left, speaks during a news conference to announce impeachment managers on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020. The U.S. House is set to vote Wednesday to send the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate for a landmark trial on whether the charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress are grounds for removal. With Pelosi, from left, are Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., Rep. Sylvia Garcia, D-Texas, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. The Colorado Democrat noted that while he thinks that “anybody could accuse anyone else of having an inherent bias,” it’s imperative that the Senate call witnesses and examine records.

“That’s the best way we can assure that the American people can get to the bottom of the truth,” he said.

Later on, Lousiana Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy urged the Senate to “keep a high threshold” in managing the impeachment trial and warned of those who will “[try] to distract from what is the crux of the issue.”

“Now, there’s going to be a lot of — you know — I call it monkey dust. People throwing dust around, trying to distract from what is the crux of the issue. If we look at the crux and remain focused on that crux, then we’ll establish whether or not the president did something illegal or not,” Cassidy said.

The trial will begin in earnest on Tuesday on two articles of impeachment against Trump: abuse of power; and obstruction of Congress. House impeachment managers, who will prosecute the case against Trump, were practicing their arguments this weekend. Lawyers for both sides were filing initial briefings and pleadings in the case on Saturday.

“President Trump has done nothing wrong and is confident that this team will defend him, the voters, and our democracy from this baseless, illegitimate impeachment,” White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement. “The Articles of Impeachment House Democrats have adopted threaten grave and lasting damage to our institutions and to our Nation. The President looks forward to the end of this partisan and unconstitutional impeachment.”

The president’s legal team is set to submit his reply to the articles of impeachment later today.

Arkansas Republicans file resolution blasting impeachment ‘sham’: House Dems doing ‘irreparable harm’

Arkansas State Sen. Missy Irvin on Tuesday blasted the House Democrats’ impeachment “sham,” filing a resolution with her fellow state Senate Republicans that urges Congress to speed up the process.

“We hear every single day from our constituents that they are tired and they are frustrated with what is happening at the federal level with the impeachment sham and the process that is occurring,” Irvin told “Fox & Friends,” explaining her reason for trying to get federal legislators’ attention.

GINGRICH: PELOSI PUSHING IMPEACHMENT ‘NOBODY WANTS’ WHILE DEMS SUPPORT IRANIAN DICTATORSHIP

Irvin released a statement condemning members of the House of Representatives who approved articles of impeachment against President Trump.

“On behalf of my entire Republican Senate Caucus, I filed this resolution today to encourage the United States Senate to act as quickly as possible within their full constitutional authority regarding the impeachment process and to condemn the actions of some members of the House of Representatives for passing and holding articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump.”

The resolution is scheduled for review at the January 17 meeting of the Legislative Council.

Irvin asserted that the resolution would condemn the actions of “some” of the House of Representatives for previously holding the articles of impeachment, causing a weekslong delay in the process.

“They’re just playing games. It’s a high-stakes game of chicken that they’re playing and they’re doing irreparable harm to, I believe, the office of the presidency, to our Constitution, and to our country.”

Irvin called it “embarrassing” and argued that Americans across the country are “paying the price” because important problems are not being addressed.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Monday tore into House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., just days after the speaker backed down from her refusal to send the articles of impeachment against President Trump to the Senate, calling Pelosi’s delay a “strange gambit” that “produced absolutely nothing.”

During a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell chastised Pelosi for ending what he called “her one-woman blockade” and questioned her strategy for holding off sending the articles to the Senate.

Sen. Tom Cotton says threat of future Soleimani attacks looks different to soldiers than politicians

Senate Armed Services Committee member Tom Cotton, R-Ark., praised President Trump‘s swift action that killed Iran Gen. Qassem Soleimani, telling Mark Levin that the viewpoint of a soldier in the Middle East is different than that of a lawmaker working stateside.

Cotton, a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said in an interview airing Sunday on “Life, Liberty & Levin” that he has seen intelligence that showed Soleimani, 62, was plotting “something large [and] something very dangerous” in the near future.

“There is no doubt,” he said, suggesting that the severity of the situation trumped whether the predicted attack or attacks happened in a matter of days as opposed to weeks or months.

MARK LEVIN: ‘APPALLING’ TO WATCH LAWMAKERS INVOKE ‘UNCONSTITUTIONAL’ WAR POWERS ACT AGAINST TRUMP

“The question of whether the attack is imminent or not … looks very different if you’re a soldier sitting in Iraq than if you’re some comfortable senator sitting behind armed guards in Washington D.C.,” Cotton said.

The Arkansas lawmaker added that Soleimani “was a sadistic terrorist mastermind and there is no country in the Middle East whose citizens have not suffered from his depredations.”

Cotton claimed Soleimani is a chief reason why Syria President Bashar al-Assad remains in power Syria and that the general’s Quds Force was responsible for killing thousands of Iranians during a recent civil protest against the Tehran government.

“If you’ve got a chance to take a mastermind like Qassem Soleimani off the battlefield, you take it,” he said, backing up the president’s sentiments and adding that he is disappointed in the objections he’s heard from the Democrat side of the aisle.

Storms in South blamed for 7 deaths, including 3 in Alabama from tornado

Powerful storms in parts of the South were being blamed for seven deaths, according to reports Saturday.

Alabama officials reported that three people were killed in a tornado in Pickens County.

Earlier Saturday, firefighters in Bossier Parish, La., sifted through a trailer demolished by strong winds and found the bodies of an elderly couple.

The winds were so potent that the home moved 200 feet from its foundation, officials said.

A third person was reported killed in Louisiana. In Caddo Parish, Raymond Holden, 75, was sleeping when a tree fell on his home, crushing him.

“Our prayers are with their families and everyone in harm’s way,” Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards tweeted after the deaths were reported.

“Please stay safe and monitor local media as this severe weather will continue to impact Louisiana for several hours,” he added.

In Mississippi, straight-line wind reportedly knocked at least 30 train cars off the tracks in Tallahatchie County.

Strong winds in Texas reportedly flipped an 18-wheeler on its side in Dallas County during a severe thunderstorm that blew through the region Friday.

Gale-force winds blew the truck onto the grass next to westbound Interstate 635 in Irving, Texas, FOX 4 reported.

Crews had to break a window to get the driver, who suffered minor injuries, out of the truck. The rig was eventually righted using a crane.

Severe winds also ripped off a section of wall from nearby Hilton Garden Inn. No injuries were reported.

TORNADOES HIT MISSOURI, OKLAHOMA, AS SEVERE STORMS MOVE EAST

Much of Northern Texas was under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. local time, FOX 4 of Dallas reported.

Meanwhile, two homes were destroyed by winds in Logan County, Ark. where “a confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado” touched down Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Only the foundation of a trailer home was left after the storm blew through Midway, Ark., Little Rock’s FOX 16 reported.

“Winds so strong that it picked it up from its foundation and just tossed everything out here,” Re’Chelle Turner of FOX 16 reported.

She advised people in the area to be careful: “This weather is nothing to play with.”

Turner said a tornado warning near a Walmart in Clarksville, in Logan County, forced everyone huddle at the back of the store.

“The wind was just so hard,” she said. “The rain, it sounded just like what people actually say – like a freight train.”

The national Storm Prediction Center said more than 18 million people in Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma were at an enhanced risk of storms Friday, including from strong tornadoes, flooding rains and wind gusts that could exceed 80 mph (129 kph), the speed of a Category 1 hurricane. The area included Dallas, Houston and Austin.
