North Carolina father of 6 has neck broken by ‘intense’ wave, killing him in ‘freak accident,’ wife says

A North Carolina father of six died on Friday after he was struck by an “intense wave” that knocked him to the ground and broke his neck, according to his wife.

Lee Dingle, 37, of Raleigh was playing on the beach at Oak Island with some of his children when he was hit by the powerful wave in a “freak accident,” his wife, Shannon Dingle, wrote on Twitter.

“Lee was playing on the beach with three of our kids yesterday, and an intense wave hit him just right to slam his head into the sand and break his neck,” she said.

After breaking his neck, the 37-year-old’s throat swelled, depriving his brain of oxygen.

“Some heroes — including our kids — tried to save him, but it wouldn’t have mattered what they did,” Shannon Dingle said. “His body couldn’t recover from the initial injury.”

April Schweitzer, a friend of the Dingles, told WRAL-TV the powerful wave and injury left him in a situation that was “totally unexpected.”

“There was just too much swelling to do anything for him,” she told WRAL.

Dingle was the president of Atlas Engineering in Raleigh and had worked for the company for 15 years. The engineering firm promoted Dingle to partner just three weeks ago, ABC11 reported.

“With a focus on personal interaction with clients to ensure the highest level of quality, Lee has extensive experience with the analysis of existing structures, repair design, upgrade/reinforcement details, platforms, cranes/hoists, materials handling systems, and concrete repairs,” according to a bio on the company’s website. “Lee’s private sector clients include manufacturing, research, and pharmaceutical companies.”

Sharon Dingle shared on Twitter the couple met when she was 18 and Lee was 19 and have been together ever since.

“I wasn’t supposed to be saying goodbye at 37,” she said. “I don’t know how to be a grown up without him, but I’ll learn. I just wish I didn’t have to.”

The 37-year-old is survived by his wife and six children by birth and adoption. Schweitzer described him as a model father to ABC 11.

“How he saw each child for who they were uniquely and just supported them in that, encouraged them and was just always there for them,” Schweitzer told the television station. “I feel like anyone who knew him was a better person from their interactions with him.”

A GoFundMe page soliciting money for the family had raised  more than $92,000 as of 10 a.m. on Sunday.

“I’m overwhelmed by all the love as I figure out life without my love after a freak accident,” Shannon Dingle said. “Some friends just created this, and I am so grateful.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Ocean Service warns of the dangers of shorebreaks, an ocean condition when waves break directly on the shore. Waves that are small and high can be “unpredictable and dangerous,” and typically form where this is a rapid transition from deep to shallow water

“The power of a shorebreak can cause injuries to extremities and the cervical spine. Spinal cord injuries most often occur when diving headfirst into the water or being tumbled in the waves by the force of the waves,” the agency states. “Be sure to ask a lifeguard about the wave conditions before going into the water.”

Trump slams progressive congresswomen at fiery ‘MAGA’ rally in North Carolina

President Trump, at a fiery “Make America Great Again” campaign rally Wednesday night in Greenville, North Carolina, blasted three progressive congresswomen, Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who he continues to spar with after an ongoing feud over comments he made against them that they deemed “racist.”

“Could you imagine what it could have been if we didn’t have the witch hunt,” Trump said, lambasting Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s over two-year investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

“What happened to me with this witch hunt should never be allowed to happen to another president of the United States, never ever again.”

The rally was also Trump’s first appearance since a developing feud with progressive Democrats, and a string of comments they slammed as “racist.”

“I just heard that the United States House of Representatives has overwhelmingly voted to kill the most ridiculous project I ever worked on” Trump said at the top of his rally referring to an impeachment resolution proposed by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas that was widely opposed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other top Democrats.

“The resolution– how stupid is that– on impeachment.”

Trump called the 332-95 vote to sideline an impeachment resolution Wednesday “totally lopsided”  and instead touted his administration’s strong economy and low unemployment numbers.

“And they want to try and impeach,” he said. “It’s a disgrace.”

The House voted to table proposed articles of impeachment waged against Trump after a series of tweets on Sunday calling for a group of four congresswomen dubbed the “squad” to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”

The four congresswomen Trump aimed against included Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts all of whom are American citizens and three of whom were born in the United States.

The congresswomen, along with several other lawmakers condemned the statements as racist and Trump fired back saying “Those Tweets were NOT Racist. I don’t have a Racist bone in my body!”

Ocasio-Cortez rebutted the president saying “You have a racist mind in your head, and a racist heart in your chest. That’s why you violate the rights of children and tell the Congresswomen who represent your home borough, to “go back to my country.””

Volunteers rush to transport shelter animals threatened by Barry out of storm’s path

A multistate rescue effort helped secure and transport more than 120 cats and dogs to safety on Friday, removing them from shelters in Louisiana in anticipation of Tropical Storm Barry.

The D.C. based Humane Rescue Alliance teamed up with St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey to rescue the animals from two Louisiana shelters, St. Landry Animal Care and Control and St. Martin Animal Shelter, which are located in the path of the storm.

Both Lousiana shelters house their animals outdoors, creating an even greater potential for danger and the rescue efforts were intended to free up local shelters to deal with anticipated structural damage and an influx of displaced animals in the state as a result of the storm that is expected to bring 70 mph winds and dangerous storm surge throughout the weekend.

The animals were flown to Manassas Regional Airport in Virginia where they were then distributed to local animal shelters.

“We are proud to assist our fellow shelters in Louisiana and provide a safe haven for the animals as the region prepares for potentially devastating storms,” Lisa LaFontaine, president and CEO of HRA said in a statement. “As we head into hurricane season, the Humane Rescue Alliance and St. Hubert’s stand ready to take in homeless animals in the path of natural disasters with open arms and find loving homes for them in the region.”

The animals were flown to Manassas Regional Airport in Virginia where they were then distributed to local animal shelters including the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation, Angels of Assisi, Humane Rescue Alliance, St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center, Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA and Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

The rescue mission was the first since the D.C. rescue group and the New Jersey-based animal center merged on Tuesday with the specific mission of furthering the St. Hubert’s WayStation program, an animal transport program that cares for homeless or displaced animals, particularly during natural disasters, according to the Humane Society.

“By enriching the organizations on both ends of animal transports, we can weave a safety net for animals in every corner of the country,” LaFontaine said in a statement Tuesday.

Christian views may have kept star player off US women’s soccer team, some say

As the U.S. Women’s World Cup champions continue to celebrate their recent triumph, some observers are wondering whether a top-tier American player was left off the team because of her religious views.

Jaelene Hinkle, 26, a native of Colorado who played college soccer at Texas Tech, is a defender for the North Carolina Courage of the National Women’s Soccer League.

In 2018, Hinkle helped her team win the NWSL championship and previously helped it win a title in 2016 when it was known as the Western New York Flash.

MEGAN RAPINOE POSTERS VANDALIZED WITH HATEFUL MESSAGES AT NYC SUBWAY STATION, POLICE SAY

But in 2015, Hinkle had objected publicly to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.

“I believe with every fiber in my body that what was written 2,000 years ago in the Bible is undoubtedly true,” Hinkle wrote on Instagram at the time. “This world may change, but Christ and His Word NEVER will.”

Jesus didn’t come to save those who already believed in Him. He came so that the lost, rejected, and abandoned men and women would find Him and believe. I believe with every fiber in my body that what was written 2,000 years ago in the Bible is undoubtedly true. It’s not a fictional book. It’s not a pick and choose what you want to believe. You either believe it, or you don’t. This world may change, but Christ and His Word NEVER will. My heart is that as Christians we don’t begin to throw a tantrum over what has been brought into law today, but we become that much more loving. That through our love, the lost, rejected, and abandoned find Christ. The rainbow was a convent made between God and all his creation that never again would the world be flooded as it was when He destroyed the world during Noah’s time. It’s a constant reminder that no matter how corrupt this world becomes, He will never leave us or forsake us. Thank you Lord for your amazing grace, even during times of trial and confusion. Love won over 2,000 years ago when the greatest sacrifice of all time was made for ALL mankind. ❤️💜💛💚💙

A post shared by Jaelene Hinkle (@jaelenehinkle) on Jun 26, 2015 at 2:04pm PDT

Then in 2017, Hinkle drew criticism when she declined to play in two matches for the U.S. women’s national team, reportedly because she didn’t want to wear special team jerseys recognizing Gay Pride Month.

‘It wasn’t my job’

She later told the Christian Broadcasting Network’s “The 700 Club” that she opposed the jerseys for religious reasons.

“I just felt so convicted in my spirit that it wasn’t my job to wear this jersey,” Hinkle told the program. “I gave myself three days to just seek and pray and determine what [God] was asking me to do in this situation.”

Shortly after the interview aired, Hinkle was loudly booed in liberal Portland, Ore., when her North Carolina Courage team played against the Portland Thorns, the Irish Times reported.

Contrast with Rapinoe

Later, Hinkle was dropped from the U.S. national team for reasons solely related to soccer, team officials claimed, according to the newspaper. But the report noted that Hinkle’s public persona contrasts sharply with that of Team USA captain Megan Rapinoe, who also plays in the NWSL.

While Hinkle stands by her religious beliefs, the Times noted, Rapinoe has drawn public attention for such gestures as supporting former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protests and for posing nude with her girlfriend, WNBA basketball player Sue Bird.

But Erick Erickson, a conservative commentator, and John Stonestreet, president of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview in Colorado Springs, Colo., doubt that Hinkle was cut solely for soccer reasons, the Washington Times reported. They believe Hinkle was dropped because of her religious views.

SB Nation’s Kim McCauley asserted that Hinkle was likely invited to try out for the national team only to prevent a lawsuit, the Christian Post reported.

But Hinkle herself doesn’t seem too rattled by the decision to be left off the U.S. roster. As she told “The 700 Club”: “If I never get another national team call-up again then that’s just a part of [God’s] plan, and that’s OK.”

Hinkle also has a Biblical passage posted on her Twitter page: “If you live for people’s acceptance, you’ll die from their rejection.”

Murphy wins North Carolina GOP congressional primary runoff in boost for House Freedom Caucus

A state legislator aided by hardline conservatives on Capitol Hill won the Republican nomination Tuesday for the North Carolina congressional district seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Walter Jones Jr.

Voters in the 3rd District GOP primary runoff chose state Rep. Greg Murphy of Greenville over Kinston pediatrician Joan Perry, a first-time candidate backed by groups seeking to increase the number of Republican women in the House. They were the top vote-getters in the 17-candidate party primary in April, with Murphy finishing first but falling short of the threshold to avoid a runoff.

Murphy, a urologist serving in the legislature since 2015, won comfortably, according to unofficial results that show he performed strongly in balloting in his home county of Pitt. He now advances to the Sept. 10 special election to take on Democratic nominee Allen Thomas and two other candidates. That winner completes the remainder of Jones’ two-year term.

Jones died in February after more than 24 years representing the Republican-leaning 3rd District, which now stretches from Greenville to the Outer Banks and includes military installations like Camp Lejeune. Agriculture, the military and medicine are among the largest industries in a district President Donald Trump won by 24 percentage points in 2016. About 11% of qualified voters in the 17-county 3rd District race cast ballots, according to the State Board of Elections.

Washington-based political committees spent well over $1 million to support one or the other of the two conservative candidates in the runoff. Each campaign or its supporting groups ran attack ads accusing the opponent of liberal tendencies and questioning the opponent’s commitment to President Donald Trump’s agenda.

Murphy’s campaign had outraised Perry entering the campaign’s final days, but independent expenditure groups backing Perry eliminated any gap.

Murphy’s victory is a win for the House Freedom Caucus and for its chairman, Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina, a close ally of Trump in Congress. Meadows and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, a founding Freedom Caucus member, campaigned with Murphy.

Murphy said Perry’s support from Washington-based PACs showed she was aligned with the “swamp.” Meadows vouched for Murphy, saying in a TV ad he was “100% confident” that Murphy would have Trump’s back if elected to Congress.

Perry’s defeat is a setback for those seeking to boost the number of Republican women in the House. The 13 who now serve there represent a 25-year-low. The Winning for Women Action Fund ran ads supporting Perry and attacking Murphy. Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin also endorsed Perry.

“We took a political outsider with no name recognition and helped elevate her through a field of 17 candidates into a two-person runoff,” Winning for Women Executive Director Rebecca Schuller said in a release. “Primary support is critical to electing more women.”

Perry and Murphy largely agreed on most issues, including support for the construction of a U.S.-Mexico wall. Both strongly oppose abortion.

With Murphy, “Republican voters selected a true-prolife champion and conservative leader to fill the seat of Congressman Walter Jones,” said Tami Fitzgerald with the North Carolina Values Coalition.

Perry and her allies tried to draw differences with Murphy on a bill he had sponsored earlier this year in the state House that would expand Medicaid to hundreds of thousands of low-income adults through the federal health care law.

Murphy won despite Jones’ widow giving support to Perry. While stopping short of a full endorsement, Joe Anne Jones said Perry’s integrity and religious faith are similar to those of the late congressman.

The late congressman was considered a conservative maverick willing to vote against his party and GOP presidents, including Trump.

Woman dead, man rescued from rubble after North Carolina house explosion, fire officials say

A woman has died and a man suffered life-threatening injuries following a house explosion in North Carolina on Tuesday, fire officials said.

Firefighters said it took about seven hours to find the woman and about two hours to free the man from a home leveled by a fire in the Charlotte neighborhood of Ballantyne. They said the man managed to call 911 and alert rescuers to his location.

The Charlotte Fire Department tweeted on Tuesday, “One patient has been freed conscious & alert; patient turned over to @MecklenburgEMS & taken by helicopter to area hospital.”

Charlotte Fire Chief Reginald Johnson said the man called emergency operators to tell them he was trapped inside the shattered home. He told operators where he was in the home but did not say what caused the explosion, which happened around 1:50 p.m.

Fire officials said the man indicated a woman was inside the home at the time of the explosion as well, so firefighters spent hours trying to find her.

Firefighters conducted the rescue operation until they found the woman around 9 p.m.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.  Fire officials also did not disclose the relationship between the two.

A North Carolina sheriff is asking of kindness after the mugshot of a Florida man arrested on drug trafficking charges received negative comments.

However, it wasn’t Lopez’s crime that triggered comments on social media.

After police posted the mugshot and news release on Facebook, users began to leave comments about Lopez’s appearance. This prompted the sheriff’s office to leave a note in the release, pleading for civility.

“Even though this individual has been charged for committing a crime, he is still someone’s child/family member,” the department wrote. “It is obvious that he has suffered some type of injury. Please refrain from making jokes/negative comments. Have a blessed day.”

A majority of users echoed the department’s statement and condemned those leaving making jokes about Lopez’s appearance.
