North Carolina woman allegedly assaulted air marshal, threatened to ‘stab everyone on the plane. … I’m Palestinian’

A North Carolina woman who said she wanted to “stab everyone on the plane” then commit suicide was charged with assaulting a federal air marshal on board a flight that landed in Virginia’s Dulles International Airport on Saturday after he attempted to stop her from entering the plane’s lavatory with a lighter.

Flight attendants aboard the United Airlines plane from Frankfurt, Germany, said they were alerted that a flight lavatory smoke detector had been activated while in the air and found Dana Ghazi Mustafa in the bathroom. They told Mustafa that smoking on board the aircraft is prohibited by federal regulations and asked her to return to her seat, which she did, according to court filings.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT REPORTEDLY FIRED FOR BEING 1 POUND ‘OVERWEIGHT’ LOSES COURT CASE

Once seated, Mustafa was seen crying and told flight attendants that she was flying home to see her family but said they had died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Flight attendants moved the 27-year-old to another seat to make her more comfortable.

While in her reassigned seat, Mustafa allegedly punched the TV monitor on her seatback and threw a coin at the bulkhead.

She was later seen getting up and walking to the rear cabin of the plane while striking the flint of her lighter.

A federal air marshal aboard the plane who saw Mustafa with the lighter said in a sworn affidavit that she smelled of alcohol.

Flight attendants tried to stop Mustafa from entering the lavatory with the lighter, but she pushed the attendants and tried to shut the door.

She also fought back against two air marshals on board who attempted to restrain her and place handcuffs on her, and Mustafa repeatedly kicked one of the marshals in the shins.

She was eventually handcuffed and seated next to the air marshals who found a half-empty liter of Absolut vodka visible at the top of her open bag and said Mustafa complained that “I was allowed to drink my duty-free bottle of vodka on my previous flight.”

Mustafa also threatened to stab the air marshal and said: “I’m going to stab everyone on the plane then kill myself. I’m Palestinian! That’s how we get down,” according to court documents.

When the plane landed in Virginia, FBI agents arrested Mustafa, who admitted that the story about her family’s deaths was a lie.

Supreme Court hears Atlantic Coast Pipeline case, Roberts warns of ‘impermeable barrier’ along Appalachian Trail

The Supreme Court began hearing arguments Monday on the case that will determine the fate of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline – a 600-mile natural gas project would begin in West Virginia and stretch through Virginia and North Carolina.

A December ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the U.S. Forest Service was not authorized to grant an $8 billion pipeline permit to Dominion Energy Inc., allowing for the natural gas project to cross the Appalachian Trail, West Virginia Public Radio reported.

TRUDEAU CALLS EMERGENCY MEETING AFTER CANADA PIPELINE PROTEST SHUTS DOWN RAILWAY SERVICE FOR THOUSANDS

Chief Justice John Roberts appeared to back the permit in oral arguments in Washington Monday, claiming a ruling in favor of environmental groups would create an “impermeable barrier” along the 2,200-mile-long historic hiking route, Bloomberg reported. The Appalachian Trail, which extends down the East Coast from Maine to Georgia, is on federal land and is a unit of the National Park Service.

Construction on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, developed by Dominion with Duke Energy Corp., was scheduled to begin in mid-2020 and finish by the end of 2021. It was to transport 1.5 billion cubic feet of gas per day from the Marcellus shale basin in West Virginia to customers in North Carolina and Virginia.

Backed by the Trump administration,  Dominion Energy and Duke Energy asked the high court to overturn a lower court that threw out a permit for the pipeline to cross two national forests, including parts of the Appalachian Trail. Lawyers for Dominion and U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco argued in legal briefs that the U.S. Forest Service has jurisdiction over land in the George Washington National Forest, where a 0.1-mile segment of the pipeline would cross about 700 feet beneath the Appalachian Trail.

But the Sierra Club and other environmental groups claim that because the Appalachian Trail is considered a unit of the National Park System, no federal agency can grant a right-of-way for the pipeline. Only Congress can approve such a crossing, they argue.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey spearheaded a group of 18 state attorney generals who appealed the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ ruling in U.S. Forest Service v. Cowpasture River Preservation Association, urging the Supreme Court to hear the case, West Virginia Public Radio reported.

“We think that the 4th Circuit clearly erred,” Morrisey, said in a recent press conference. “You cannot set up literally an impenetrable federal barrier to economic development, not only under our constitution or a law, but under the statutes, the Mineral Leasing Act.”

Under the 1920 U.S. Mineral Leasing Act, the Forest Service has no jurisdiction over “lands in the National Park System.”

On Monday, U.S. government lawyers argued the Appalachian Trail route is separate from the land it crosses, warning a ruling in favor of the environmental groups could bear “unintended consequences.” The environmental groups countered, saying the pipeline project could be authorized on private of state land – but not on federal parkland, KYTX reported.

The Supreme Court is expected to hand down a decision on the case in upcoming months, KYTX reported. If the decision sides with environmental groups, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline may be rerouted not to cross over the Appalachian Trail.

North Carolina police went to a cemetery early Saturday and found the body of an infant whose disappearance hours earlier prompted an Amber Alert.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department homicide detectives had been assigned to investigate the death of the baby, Chi-Liam Cody Brown-Erickson, who was 6 months old, Fox 46 Charlotte reported.

The Matthews Police Department issued the Amber Alert for the baby around 10 p.m. Friday after arresting his mother Tamara Brown on a charge of robbing two people at a Walmart, according to the station.

North Carolina voter ID law blocked by appeals court as discriminatory

A North Carolina appeals court on Tuesday blocked the state’s voter identification law from going into effect, arguing it was a “discriminatory intent” to suppress black votes and should have been blocked months ago.

In its unanimous ruling, the three-judge Court of Appeals panel reversed a lower court’s July decision that refused to prevent implementation of the photo ID requirement approved by the Republican-controlled General Assembly. The law came after voters added an ID requirement to the state constitution in November 2018.

“I Voted” stickers wait for voters at a polling station inside the library at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School in Los Angeles.

A majority of judges on the lower state court had declared that the plaintiffs failed to demonstrate they were likely to win at trial on claims that the December 2018 law designed to implement the amendment showed discriminatory intent against black voters.

Republican lawmakers said this law expanded the types of qualifying IDs and made it easier for registered voters without IDs to have their votes counted, making it very different from a 2013 voter ID law that federal courts previously overturned as discriminatory.

FLORIDA SEES CONFUSION A YEAR AFTER ALLOWING CONVICTED FELONS TO VOTE

U.S. District Judge Loretta Biggs wrote a similar opinion on Dec. 31, saying the new voter ID rules appear to contain the racially discriminatory taint of the 2013 law. The federal plaintiffs say the new law violates the U.S. Voting Rights Act and Constitution.

The Southern Coalition for Social Justice, whose lawyers are helping represent the voters in the state case, have said both injunctions are important in case one is overturned.

Lawyers for the state of North Carolina are appealing the federal ruling to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Republican legislative leaders have not said whether they’ll also appeal the state ruling.

The members of Tuesday’s panel — Judges Toby Hampson, Allegra Collins and John Arrowood — are all registered Democrats but aren’t on the 2020 ballot. Six of the seven state Supreme Court justices are registered Democrats. Three of those seven seats are up for election in the fall.

Mild winter temperatures along a stretch of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Parkway in Watauga County have resulted in the growth of a fetid-smelling pod that, despite its odor, has the uncanny ability to create enough heat to melt snow around it, a published report said.

NC DAD ‘TACKLED’ SUSPECTED HOME INTRUDER AFTER DAUGHTER SCREAMED, INVESTIGATORS SAY

While experts say the plant – known as skunk cabbage – is fatal if eaten, in a Facebook post Saturday, National Park Service officials say the prodigious bloom has “a face only a mother could love,” the Charlotte Observer reported.

“Equipped with a chemical process that heats this early bloomer up to over 55 degrees Fahrenheit, these stinky members of the Arum Family can even melt snow in order to bloom. Talk about determination!”

— National Park Service Facebook post

Skunk cabbage is “a warm-blooded plant” that can raise the surrounding temperatures by as much as 20 degrees, according to a Pennsylvania State University report. By doing this, it “will use as much oxygen as a comparably sized mammal,” the report says.

Descriptions of the plant say it “looks like something out of a science-fiction movie,” with a fierce defense mechanism, according to Gardening Know How.

“Skunk cabbage gets its name from the fact that, when the leaves are crushed or bruised, it gives off a smell of skunk or rotting meat,” Gardeningknowhow.com says.

“In small doses, or two small bites, the skunk cabbage plant can cause burning and swelling of the mouth and a choking sensation. Eating larger portions of these leaves can, in extreme cases, be fatal,” the gardening site says.

ASHEBORO, N.C.– A man is accused of keeping a woman “in sexual servitude” for five years, authorities in North Carolina said.

Salvador Espinoza Escobar, 48, was expected in court Friday after being charged with one count of felony human trafficking, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. He was taken into custody Wednesday, the same day the investigation began.

Information from the National Human Trafficking Tip Line helped deputies capture Escobar, the sheriff’s office said. He’s accused of withholding basic needs from the woman in exchange for forced sexual acts since January 2015.

Human trafficking isn’t highly reported in Randolph County, according to the sheriff’s office, which said this is its first arrest of this nature. The sheriff’s office is working with World Relief Triad — an organization that helps human trafficking survivors and others — to help the victim, news outlets reported.

No further information about the victim was expected to be released, for her protection and privacy, the release said.

This seems … catty.

A truly unique animal adoption notice recently appeared on Facebook. While most posts like this try to be positive and cheerful, this particular one can only be described as brutally honest.

The Mitchell County Animal Rescue in North Carolina introduced social media to Perdita, who can apparently only be described as a “jerk.” That’s not a description coming from an upset user, that’s the official statement coming from the animal shelter.

According to the post, the rescue thought Perdita “was sick, turns out she’s just a jerk.”

Along with photos of the cat, the post states, “Meet Perdita, not for the faint of heart. LIKES: staring into your soul until you feel as if you may never be cheerful again; the song Cat Scratch Fever, the movie ‘Pet Cemetery’ (Church is her hero), jump scares (her specialty), lurking in dark corners, being queen of her domicile, fooling shelter staff into thinking she’s sick (vet agrees… she’s just a jerk).”

That impressive list of likes is followed by Perdita’s dislikes, which reportedly include, “the color pink, kittens (yuk they are so chipper), dogs, children, the Dixie Chicks, Disney movies, Christmas and last but NOT least…HUGS. She’s single and ready to be socially awkward with a socially awkward human who understands personal space.”

The Mitchell County Animal Rescue confirmed to Fox News that while the post has received plenty of attention, they haven’t gotten any offers to adopt the cat yet.

The post concludes by stating that Perdita is a free adoption, which seems fair, as no one should have to pay to live a jerk.

North Carolina students flee as mircoburst rips school’s roof off, injuring 3

Students at an elementary school in North Carolina were forced to run for their lives after severe storms moving through the area Monday spawned a microburst that tore apart the building’s roof and wall, injuring three people.

The National Weather Service’s Office in Raleigh said Tuesday that a team confirmed a microburst damaged the Union Intermediate School in Sampson County. It was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. Monday, with estimated peak winds of 80 to 85 mph.

“We were playing basketball, and it just sounded like something exploded in there,” Chloe Brewer, a fifth-grade student at the school, told WRAL-TV.

NORTH CAROLINA’S WILD HORSES LURED ONTO BEACHES BY WARM WEATHER, PROMPTING WARNING TO DRIVERS

Brewer was one of 21 students in the gym at the time the storms rolled through the area about 40 miles southeast of Fayetteville.
