Tennessee man killed while trying to save pet dog from severe storm

A Tennessee man died Saturday after he was hit by a falling tree during a severe storm as he reportedly tried to save his dog.

Ray Wood, 63, of Adamsville, ran outside his home, roughly 105 miles east of Memphis, “to retrieve a family pet when a tree fell on him,” his family said. Wood died of his injuries.

The man was said to be a “beloved member of the community,” the Tennessee River Valley News reported. Wood’s daughter also described him online as “a man of God … [whose] soul went to Heaven.”

The 63-year-old used to serve as “band dad and pit crew leader” of the Adamsville Junior/Senior High School, according to a Facebook post from the group. The band said Wood “was the nicest, most generous man.”

“Our hearts are broken over his loss and for his family,” the post continued. “He will be so deeply missed by us and the community for which he had a heart of serving.”

The small Tennessee town suffered major damage from the storms, which brought severe winds through the area over the weekend, left schools closed Monday and Tuesday, and pushed McNairy County Mayor Larry Smith to declare a state of emergency on Saturday.

April Ryan, at Politicon, clashes with man who calls press ‘enemy of the people’

American Urban Radio Networks reporter and CNN analyst April Ryan engaged in a fierce debate Sunday with a man who said he thought the press was the “enemy of the people,” during a panel discussion at Politicon in Nashville, Tennessee.

Derek Barton, 42, was the only person in a large audience to raise his hand when Ryan asked if anyone believed the press was the enemy. She specifically requested that he jump ahead of others in a line designated for questions, so that she could discuss his belief with him in front of the crowd.

White House reporters including Ryan and Playboy reporter Brian Karem — also a vocal critic of President Trump — were on stage. The panel, entitled “White House Correspondents Dilemma,” featured unanimous criticism of the way the Trump administration has treated the media.

TRUMP TURNS UP HEAT ON MEDIA AFTER MUELLER REPORT, RENEWS ‘ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE’ LABEL

Karem, for example, plainly claimed that White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham “lies, period.” He also claimed Trump had convinced millions of people it was OK to commit acts of violence against him and other reporters.

More from Media

At one point during Ryan’s exchange with Barton, she asked him if he had even read former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian meddling in the 2016 election, something Barton referenced as they discussed media bias and a purported narrative on the part of reporters. Barton said he had read the Mueller report.

TRUMP CRITICIZED FOR CALLING THE PRESS THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

Shortly thereafter, Ryan told another audience member, who apparently criticized the way she was conducting the conversation, that Barton hadn’t even read the report. It’s unclear why she made that claim, but for Barton, the episode illustrated the original point he was trying to make — that the media suppressed certain information in order to feed a narrative.

“You just did what I said you do, and what makes you the enemy of people,” Barton said of Ryan while speaking to Fox News. “You just lied about what I said because you know they couldn’t hear me.” Ryan did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

TRUMP REVIVES ‘ENEMY’ RHETORIC IN DENOUNCING NY TIMES, WASHINGTON POST

Barton discussed why he raised his hand in the first place. “Because it was a baited question, and I feel like they ask that question because they feel like it’s their job to push a narrative over truth, and I believe that is, in fact, being the enemy of the state,” he said. “They may not think of themselves as North Korea, but I think when you push political agenda over the truth, you’ve become an enemy to a huge portion of America.”

While Barton was speaking to Fox News, one of the reporters from the panel approached Barton and apologized for the treatment he received.

“I’m sorry for how that went down. I feel like that was very frustrating for them to force you to talk and then they didn’t let you talk. I’m really sorry about that,” the reporter, who asked to remain anonymous, said.

Although Trump repeatedly has said the press is the enemy of the people, he’s also clarified that he intended that description to apply only to what he’s called “fake news.”

Two convicted teen rapists in Tennessee get only 6 months probation

Westlake Legal Group Justice-iStock Two convicted teen rapists in Tennessee get only 6 months probation Morgan Phillips fox-news/us/us-regions/southeast/tennessee fox-news/us/crime/rape fox news fnc/us fnc bdc906a1-ffb1-5fa4-84f6-6c876c39d6a7 article

Two 13-year-old boys in Tennessee pleaded guilty to raping a 15-year-old girl and were convicted, but the judge sentenced them to just six months’ probation.

The law as it’s written protects juvenile sex offenders from prosecution to the fullest extent, but the victim, her family and an incensed local state representative are working to change the law.

“I got raped,” said the victim, who has not been identified publicly, according to Fox 17 Nashville. She said she’s uncomfortable describing the scene one month ago when two boys she thought were friends held her down in a home as they raped her and filmed it.

“I didn’t want to say, because I was afraid nobody’s gonna believe me,” the victim said. But once she opened up to her parents, they immediately went to the police.

“I just always thought it would be, you know, kids being mean, teasing or fighting, but not rape,” her mother said told Fox 17.

“The only thing I really recall the police saying to me was essentially begging me to let them handle it,” her father said.

JUDGE IN TEXAS RULES PARENTS MUST MAKE JOINT DECISION IN GENDER TRANSITION CASE

Police investigated and found the video evidence of the crime.

The two boys were tried in court and pleaded guilty. The judge sentenced one of the boys to six months’ probation. The other, who had a criminal history, was given six months’ probation but is required to serve it in the custody of the state.

“They pleaded guilty and said, ‘Yes, I did this thing,’ and then the sentencing guidelines mandate that they can go home,” the victim’s father said.

And, because they were under 14 years old, they were not placed on a sex offender registry.

FLORIDA WOMAN LIT ON FIRE AT TACO BELL; SUSPECT IS ARRESTED

The light sentence was attributed to the Juvenile Reform Act, which serves to protect minors from harsh sentences. In an email to the family, the assistant attorney general quoted several parts of the act.

“All of them [the police] did absolutely fantastic work until it came down to the moment where we were going to get something back by knowing that they would have at least some sort of punishment for the things they did to my daughter, and it couldn’t happen because of the way the law is written,” the victim’s dad told Fox 17.

State Rep. Jason Hodges heard of the injustice and is now working on two bills to try and change the law.

“Obviously, as a father, I was disgusted, and as a citizen of that community, I was disgusted,” he told Fox 17. “You know, rape is obviously a serious offense, and whether you’re 13 or 30 you should know better.”

One of Hodges’ bills would allow minors 13 and under to be charged as adults in the case of rape. The other would allow a judge to decide if he or she wished to put minors 13 and under on a sex offender’s registry.

Missing Tennessee mother’s body found, 2 men charged with abuse of corpse, investigators say

The body of a Tennessee mother who was reported missing nearly two weeks ago was discovered on Wednesday and two men were charged with abuse of a corpse, investigators announced Thursday.

Carolyn Pope’s body turned up near power lines in Hickman County, Tenn., which is about an hour from Nashville, a news release from the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office said.

A tip led investigators to the 30-year-old mother, WKRN-TV reported, citing Hickman County Sheriff Randal Ward. Her body reportedly was found wrapped in a blanket, under a plastic sheet and debris in a gully near a heavily wooded area.

Pope lived in Fairview, about a half-hour from Nashville, with her grandmother and 5-year-old daughter.

Pope’s grandmother filed a missing-person report on October 13, the sheriff’s news release said, adding that she was last seen at a home the day before. Since then, the sheriff’s office and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted several search warrants at different homes, on multiple phones and vehicles.

Warrants for Mitchell Hinderliter and Christopher Hall, both of whom were in jail on unrelated charges, were written for abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and false reports, the sheriff’s office added.

It was unclear what possible ties the men may have had to Pope. Her car reportedly was recovered on Hinderliter’s property during the investigation.

“Her 5-year-old is going to take it really hard. I mean her mom was her superhero, she was her superwoman,” Gonzalez reportedly said. “She would do anything for her. It’s heartbreaking that she’s going to grow up not knowing her, you know, only having the memories.”

The investigation was ongoing and more charges connected to Pope’s death were expected after the final report from the medical examiner, the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office said.

Tennessee teen wearing ankle monitor admitted to shooting, sexual assault of Nashville rideshare drivers: police

A Tennessee teenager faces several charges after a violent crime spree Friday night that included the shooting of a female rideshare driver and the sexual assault of another, police announced on Wednesday.

Reginald Williams, Jr., 17, who was wearing an ankle monitor under the supervision of the Department of Children’s Services during the alleged crime spree involving rideshare drivers, admitted to his involvement, according to a Metropolitan Nashville Police Department news release.

CALIFORNIA LYFT DRIVER IS PULLED OVER SO POLICE CAN ARREST HER PASSENGER

Police said a female Lyft driver responded around 9:15 p.m. on Friday to the Opry Mills Mall in Nashville, Tenn. to pick up three young men who, according to WKRN-TV, used a stolen phone to request the ride. The woman then drove them to a location about twenty minutes away and that is where she was robbed and sexually assaulted at gunpoint, investigators said.

Police said about an hour and a half later officers responded to a Nashville supermarket where a man reported that he was approached by a man with a gun on a street about five minutes away and was forced to drive to the grocery store to withdraw money from an ATM inside the store. When the victim came back outside, the suspect was gone.

Police said the gunman then used the stolen phone to order a ride back to the street where he had come from, where he attempted to rob the female Lyft driver. The driver told officers that he grabbed her by the throat and put a gun to her head, according to the news release. She said she reached for her pepper spray and began spraying the gunman who fired his gun. Police said she was shot in the arm and foot and her injuries were reportedly not life-threatening.

Williams, of Nashville, has been charged in Juvenile Court with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated robbery, carjacking and evading arrest. Police said charges related to the robbery and sexual assault are pending.

Investigators said they are still working to identify two other suspects.

Tennessee doctors plead guilty to overprescribing opioids, DOJ says

Two Tennessee doctors pleaded guilty Thursday to distributing high doses of opioids with no medical legitimacy, the Justice Department announced.

Dr. Samuel Mcgaha and Dr. Frank McNiel – both from East Tennessee – each pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance.

Between 2015 and early 2018, Mcgaha and McNiel prescribed a combined total of 271,938 opioid pills, a DOJ news release said.

Memphis pastor says he forgives vandals who caused $50G in damage to church: ‘God still loves you’

The pastor of a local church in Frayser, Tenn., walked in Sunday morning to see his church had been almost completely destroyed overnight.

Davante Hill, the pastor of One Church, told the police that when he entered at 8 a.m. he found musical instruments broken, paint thrown at the walls, pews destroyed, 90 percent of the chairs damaged and the power had been cut off. Money and several speakers were also stolen.

“When I walked in… what broke me, was not the condition of the sanctuary, what broke me was the condition of someone’s heart to be willing to do such a thing,” Hill told WMC, a local TV station.

The pastor said he believes that the person that did this to the church, which has been in the community for only five months, has been there before because the vandals turned off the security cameras before the incident.

Police are still investigating the burglary.

Pastor Hill hopes the police find those who are responsible for this damage to the congregation but still sends words of forgiveness and support to the vandals that did this to the house of worship.

And that this is not the end, there is life after this,” he told WMC. “And that whatever it is that has you broken, whatever it is that has you destroyed on the inside, there is help for you.”

The Memphis Police Department told FOX 13 that the estimated damage at the church is between $15,000 to $20,000, but Hill said it could be well over $50,000.

A Tennessee man was charged with felony child neglect Wednesday after he allegedly left his 23-month-old great nephew unattended inside a hot car in a fast food restaurant parking lot and went to buy cocaine, police said.

ARIZONA 4-MONTH-OLD BECOMES STATE’S 4TH CHILD TO DIE IN HOT CAR THIS YEAR: COPS

Shawn Barber, 42, left the child inside his vehicle outside a Jack in the Box in Nashville on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Employees brought the child inside the restaurant, telling police they found him unattended in the vehicle, which had the windows rolled down and keys still inside, FOX 17 Nashville reported.

Responding police officers said they questioned Barber once he returned to the vehicle. He allegedly admitted leaving the child alone and went to another location to buy cocaine.

The child’s mother told police Barber came to her apartment to babysit her son while she left to pick up her other children from school. Barber drove off with the child after she left, according to FOX 17. The Nashville Fire Department transported the child to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital to be evaluated. He was unharmed, authorities said.

Deputies in Tennessee conducted a woodland search last week for a 41-year-old nurse who has been missing for four months.
