A convicted felon in Tennessee was arrested after he allegedly rammed into a police cruiser and led officers on a chase, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.

Derell Broyles, 19, allegedly had sped off from Juvenile Crime Task Force officers who tried to stop the 2015 Honda Accord he was driving. Police said officers had been on the lookout for the vehicle in connection to a carjacking and robbery that unfolded earlier this month.

The officers spotted the Honda and a white 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, both thought to be connected to robbery investigations, at a Nashville apartment complex Friday night, police said.

As officers in a marked patrol vehicle turned around to follow the Jeep, Broyles allegedly rammed into the back of the police cruiser and took off.

Broyles later was involved in a hit-and-run at an intersection about eight miles from the apartment complex and his passenger ran off, police said. Broyles then allegedly sped off before crashing about six miles away.

Officers found the Honda, which had been carjacked on July 13, unoccupied, and recovered a gun and two ski masks from the car, police said.

“While a perimeter was being established, officers were flagged down by four victims who reported that when they saw Broyles pulling on their vehicle door handles, he pointed a gun at them and fled into a wooded area,” police said in a news release.

Broyles, who refused to be interviewed, was arrested a short time later and faced several charges including aggravated assault on police officers, leaving the scene of a crash, felon in possession of a handgun and evading arrest, police added. Broyles’ passenger has not been charged.

The officers were not hurt in the crash, according to police.

The said Broyles was convicted of vehicle theft and unlawful gun possession in May 2018 and was sentenced to three years behind bars.

Police said they also recovered the stolen Jeep unoccupied, at another Nashville apartment complex, adding that it had been reported stolen on July 3 after it was left unlocked with a spare key inside.

They said their investigation was ongoing.

Tennessee detective, boyfriend arrested after violent incident, allegedly involving a hammer

A Tennessee detective has been decommissioned after investigators said she and her boyfriend were arrested. This, on the heels of an alleged clash between the two that reportedly involved a hammer.

Deputies with the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Department arrested Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Det.  Megan Hoffman and her boyfriend, Jonathan Mahoney, both 34, on Tuesday after an alleged domestic assault.

Deputies said they were called to the couple’s home in Ashland City, a half-hour from Nashville, about 2:30 a.m.

Hoffman is accused of punching her boyfriend in the face during an argument. A responding deputy saw bruising on the right side of Mahoney’s face, according to an incident report obtained by Fox News.

Mahoney told deputies Hoffman “destroyed the house” during the fight, according to court documents. He also told deputies that video cameras are set up at the home.

According to court documents, deputies found debris all over a hallway leading to a bedroom. Once in the room, deputies said, they found a computer monitor that was “busted and inoperable.”

Deputies said wires had been ripped out of the DVR linked to the camera system and the DVR was broken, adding that “the bedroom was in complete disarray.”

“There was also a large hole in the bedroom door,” the incident report said.

Mahoney told deputies Hoffman caused all the damage “during her rage,” according to the report.

When deputies asked Mahoney to go into further detail about the fight, he reportedly declined to offer more information without a lawyer present.

Deputies said when they questioned Hoffman, she alleged that Mahoney had struck her with a hammer. She told deputies she wanted to go to the emergency room for treatment.

Video shows bear charging man who came within feet of cubs in Tennessee

A black bear in Tennessee charged at a man who was seen on video Saturday approaching the animal and her cubs.

The man is seen coming within feet of the bear and her cubs at Cades Cove, a popular tourist spot in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The man was not hurt, according to Paige Marple of Knoxville, who was in the area with her boyfriend and brother when they noticed the bear and her cubs. Marple told Fox News that they stayed in their truck and watched from a distance as the man approached the bear.

She recorded the risky encounter.

TENNESSEE POLICE WARN NOT TO FLUSH DRUGS DOWN TOILET FOR FEAR OF CREATING ‘METH-GATORS’

Marple called what she had witnessed “intense,” calling it unbelievable that the man had gotten away unscathed.

“I don’t know how he’s still alive, honestly,” Marple wrote on her Facebook page on Saturday, adding that in Cades Cove “there are signs everywhere stating to stay 50 yards away from the animals.”

“This man did not listen and could have died because of it,” she wrote.

In the video, the bear appeared to charge before backing off to follow her cubs.

Marple told Fox News, “I was confused at first, as I couldn’t understand what enticed this man to even consider going towards the bear and her cubs.”

She said fear set in shortly thereafter.

“You can hear myself, my brother and my boyfriend all gasp, as we thought it was going to get bad,” Marple said. “Shock and relief was followed by a feeling of anger because the man did something that could have very well ended bad for himself and the family of bears.”

Dana Soehn, a park spokesperson, told Fox News that visitors need to be aware that bears are wild animals, and can be dangerous or unpredictable, adding that it is illegal to come within 50 yards of them in the park.

Violations can result in fines and arrest, Soehn said.

In a statement sent to Fox News Soehn wrote, “To help us best protect bears in the park, it is critical that people act responsibly during their visit.”

Soehn added that bears should never be fed or approached.

“We work hard to keep bears wild in a space shared with 11.4 million people,” the statement said. “We need each visitor to do their part by always staying at least 50 yards back from bears and properly disposing of food waste – for their safety and that of the bears.”

Soehn said mother bears are extremely protective of their cubs and will aggressively defend them from harm.

Tennessee man leads chase that ends with car in flames: court documents

A man accused of leading Tennessee deputies on a chase on Sunday that ended with the vehicle going airborne and then catching fire was taken into custody — but not before he assaulted an officer, court documents said.

Travis Zimmerman, 30, struck a Dollar General store in Heiskell, Tenn., 20 minutes from Knoxville, around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday and when deputies responded he took off, court records said.

The chase continued with Zimmerman weaving in and out of traffic while reaching speeds of about 80 mph, “almost causing numerous wrecks,” according to court documents.  Zimmerman then tried to cross railroad tracks “at a high rate of speed, causing the vehicle to take flight,” according to the affidavit, which added that when his car hit the ground it caught fire and filled with smoke.

Zimmerman continued to drive for about half a mile as he was hanging out the window, according to court documents.

He then allegedly tried to jump out of the car, but it hit a curb and dropped into an irrigation ditch.

At that point, Zimmerman jumped out of the car “in an attempt to flee,” according to court documents, but he fell on his back.

When he saw the officer’s police dog he “complied with verbal orders,” but once an officer tried to put handcuffs on him he “began actively resisting” and was “flopping around and flailing his free arm,” according to court records.  The affidavit said that is when Zimmerman reached between the officer’s legs and “grabbed him in the groin area.”

The officer was able to arrest Zimmerman after he “delivered a closed fist strike” to the back of Zimmerman’s head, which caused him to let go of the officer’s groin, records said.

According to court documents, that when Zimmerman was taken into custody his car was “completely engulfed in flames.” Firefighters responded and extinguished the fire.

The responding officer was treated for a hand injury “sustained during the scuffle,” according to court documents. His updated condition was not immediately available.

Zimmerman faces several charges including driving without a license, assault and resisting arrest. He does not have an attorney, Knox County officials told Fox News.

Florida woman says dad died of flesh-eating bacteria less than 48 hours after entering water

A Tennessee man died just 48 hours after contracting a flesh-eating bacteria from waters in Florida after his daughter says the hospital he was treated at ignored her warnings that he had contracted necrotizing fasciitis.

Cheryl Bennett Wiygul, a resident of Okaloosa County, said her parents had come down from Memphis to spend several days with her last week.

During their stay, the family spent several days in the water, including at a beach in Destin, a creek and a swamp in Boggy Bayou. Wiygul said she had heard the recent reports of people in Florida contracting a flesh-eating bacteria and as a result, she took extra precautions with her father, who was previously diagnosed with cancer.

FLORIDA WOMAN RECOVERING FROM FLESH-EATING BACTERIA INFECTION AS DOCTOR WARNS CASES LIKELY TO RISE

“When my parents got in town I was fanatical about Neosporin and liquid bandaid,” she said in a Facebook post on Wednesday. “My Dad didn’t have any open wounds. He had a couple places that were practicality healed small scratches on his arms and legs that I made sure were super sealed up. My mom religiously sun-blocked him. We were taking precautions and we were good, so I thought.”

Cheryl Bennett Wiygul said her father (pictured) noticed a black spot on his back less than a day after being in Florida waters.  (Cheryl Bennett Wiygul/ Facebook)

Wiygul said that at around 4:00 a.m. Saturday – some 12 hours after being in the water – her father began to complain of fever, chills and some cramping. The family decided that it would be best if he was treated back in Tennessee where the doctors were already familiar with his previous health issues.

They left later that morning where the symptoms worsened. He was taken to a hospital in Memphis at around 8 p.m.

Wiygul said that while her father was changing into his hospital gown, staff noticed a “terrible swollen black spot on his back” that had not previously been there. Her mother sent her a picture and Wiygul instantly recognized what was wrong with her father.

FLORIDA MAN SAYS HE CONTRACTED FLESH-EATING INFECTION DESPITE NOT ENTERING WATER

“I told her to tell them he was in the water in Florida and it was necrotizing fasciitis. She told everyone that came in the room. One person told her the media had blown that out of proportion. Others said it was staph. They would not biopsy it,” her lengthy Facebook post read.

The man’s conditioned worsened despite being treated with antibiotics, and at around 1 a.m. he became septic and coded a short time after. He was brought back by medical staff but his health continued to decline.

“Less than 48 hours after getting out of the water feeling great, the bacteria had destroyed him,”

— Cheryl Bennett Wiygul

“My dad had a lot of medical issues but heart was not one of them. They had to intubate him. He coded again. They said his organs were too damaged and his blood was too acidic to sustain life,” Wiygul said. “He was gone by Sunday afternoon.”

Wiygul said that the hospital conducted tests which confirmed that her father had in fact contracted vibrio vulnificus which manifested into necrotizing fasciitis.

She blamed the beaches for not posting advisories about any bacteria in the water, adding that her father may have been alive today had she known the dangers.

“Less than 48 hours after getting out of the water feeling great, the bacteria had destroyed him,” she wrote. “I would never have taken my Dad in the water if there was a bacteria advisory but it would have been because I didn’t want him to get a stomach virus not because I thought it would kill him.”

Wiygul shared her dad’s story hoping it would shed more light on a crucial issue that she feels the general public lacks the most basic information on.

“I do believe if there was a simple sign posted about the risk of swimming with an open wound or an immune disorder, we wouldn’t have let him get in … here is information out there but I didn’t find it all until it was too late. I don’t want this to happen to anyone else.”

A 13-year-old boy from Tennessee stabbed his 15-year-old brother in Florida, telling deputies he would rather go to jail than spend eight hours in the car with his sibling, investigators said.

Lt. Todd Watkins with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office told Fox News on Sunday that he responded to the scene the day before and said deputies arrested the 13-year-old after he said he stabbed his brother in the arm three times with a “multi-tool.”

Watkins said the teen told deputies he did it because he was “tired of his brother picking on him.”

The incident happened inside a car parked in a driveway in Crestview, which is about a 45-minute drive from Pensacola, Watkins said.

The stabbed brother then walked to the door of the home and called 911, he added.

Watkins said as his brother was being questioned about the incident, he said he understood his rights and that he did not regret stabbing his sibling who was teasing him.

“I stabbed him and I don’t care about going back to jail. I’d rather be in jail than eight hours in the car with him,” according to the arrest report.

The 13-year-old was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and was brought to juvenile detention.

“We’ve had incidents with siblings but not this young,” Watkins told Fox News. “I have never dealt with them this young with this violent of a crime.”

Watkins said the older brother did not say much to deputies at the time he was stabbed. Watkins said the 15-year-old was heard calling some of his friends to retaliate against his brother while he was in the back of the ambulance, apparently to no avail.

Doctors treated the 15-year-old for three “deep puncture wounds” before releasing him from the hospital, Watkins said, adding that his treatment did not include surgery.

The brothers live in Clarksville, Tennessee, about an hour’s drive from Nashville.

Nashville apartment fire kills baby, injures 5 children, firefighters say

An early morning fire on Sunday killed an eight-month-old baby and injured five small children in Tennessee, according to fire officials.

Nashville firefighters responded to the Hickory Lake Apartments in Antioch, Tenn., about a 20-minute drive from Nashville, around 2 a.m. Sunday for an apartment fire, according to a news release from the Nashville Fire Department.

The first unit to arrive on scene found heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the apartments in the complex, fire officials said.

They said dispatch had informed arriving firefighters that several people were trapped inside the burning apartment. Firefighters quickly rescued one person from a balcony on the third floor.

People at the scene had informed the fire department that several children were trapped inside the burning apartment. Firefighters then rushed in and were able to rescue four of them, fire officials said.

“Unfortunately an eight-month-old baby did not survive the fire and died on the scene,” the news release from the Nashville Fire Department said.
