Democratic Rep. Denny Heck takes shots at Trump, GOP as he announces retirement plans

U.S. Rep. Denny Heck said Wednesday that he’ll retire from Congress when his fourth term ends next year.

The 67-year-old Democrat from Washington state used the announcement as an opportunity to slam President Trump and other Republicans.

In a letter to supporters, Heck – a member of the House Intelligence Committee — said the Russia investigation and the Trump impeachment inquiry have left him discouraged and “rendered my soul weary.”

NEWT GINGRICH: HOUSE REPUBLICANS AND 2020 — RETIREMENTS REALLY MEAN THIS (NOT WHAT YOU THINK)

“I will never understand how some of my colleagues, in many ways good people, could ignore or deny the president’s unrelenting attack on a free press, his vicious character assassination of anyone who disagreed with him, and his demonstrably very distant relationship with the truth,” Heck said.

Heck has represented Washington’s 10th Congressional District, located southwest of Seattle. It encompasses the state capital of Olympia and is considered a Democratic stronghold.

Rep. Dan Newhouse, a Republican from central Washington, said he was proud to have worked with Heck on issues important to the state, including reauthorizing the Export-Import Bank and returning a 9,000-year-old skeleton dubbed “The Ancient One” to local Native American tribes.

Born in Vancouver, Wash., Heck was a state lawmaker who was first elected to office at age 24. He later served as chief of staff to then-Gov. Booth Gardner from 1989 to 1993.

Heck has declined to endorse some priorities of progressive Democrats, including the Green New Deal and Medicare for all.

He was expected to face at least one Democratic primary in 2020: Joshua Collins, a 26-year-old truck driver and Democratic Socialist who supports the major points on the progressive agenda.

New ‘Cosmic Crisp’ apple variety lasts ‘for more than a year,’ farmers say

An apple a day… a year in the fridge, they may stay.

A new type of apple was launched Sunday that took more than two decades to develop and reportedly could keep for more than a year in storage, according to farmers.

The Cosmic Crisp — a super-sweet fruit named for the bright yellowish dots on its skin that look like cosmic stars — is expected to hit grocery stores in the U.S. this week. It was developed by Washington State University’s (WSU) fruit tree breeding program.

“After decades of cross-pollinating, tasting and testing, along with research and development with Washington State University’s world-class tree fruit breeding program, the Cosmic Crisp® apple was discovered,” according to the Cosmic Crisp website. “WSU researchers, including pome fruit breeder Kate Evans, have invented a new variety that will change the face of the industry and win enthusiasm among consumers with a combination of taste, texture and usability.”

Evans says it was created with the idea of crossing two varieties of apples that have their own unique traits and might be paired well together. The process is called “cross-hybridization,” which she told The Guardian is not the same as genetic modification.

The apples are a cross between the Enterprise and Honeycrisp apples, which she says gives them a higher shelf life, while still holding their naturally sweet flavor. Enterprise apples have a natural resistance to browning and disease, and the Honeycrisp is known for being sweet.

MCDONALDS EMPLOYEE TURNS 92, SAYS HE HAS NO PLANS TO RETIRE

The apple’s launch has reportedly cost $10 million, and 450,000 40-pound boxes were expected to be shipped to retailers on Sunday, according to The Spokesman-Review.

The 600,000 Cosmic Crisp trees were sold to farmers in 2017 and 10 million new trees have been planted since, according to The Guardian. The trees take three years to produce a crop.

“It creates an interest in the apples and I think that will benefit all varieties and the apple growers as a whole,” Scott McIlrath, who planted 5,000 Cosmic Crisp trees, told KIMA.

He said the economic effect the new apple might have on other farmers won’t be felt for a couple of years.

Farmers in Washington — the largest state supplier of apples in the U.S. — are allowed to exclusively grow the fruit for the next decade.

Washington movie theater evacuated after ‘highly contagious’ package of urine sent to wrong address

A movie theater in Washington state resembled a scene out of a disaster flick on Friday night after a box with a dire warning was left outside the building, triggering an evacuation after urine samples were sent to the wrong address.

The incident happened around 5:15 p.m. at the North Bend Theater in the town of North Bend, located around 30 miles east of Seattle.

The Eastside Professional Firefighters said on Twitter that first responders converged on the theater for a hazmat call with a box marked “highly contagious human substance” that had been opened up.

A total of five hazmat techs arrived at the theater to analyze the package as the building was evacuated and nearby streets were closed as authorities tried to determine what was inside the package, according to fire officials.

Snoqualmie Police Sgt. Paul Graham told KOMO News the theater manager opened up the package and discovered the liquid inside. The manager was then taken to an area hospital as a precaution due to regular exposure protocol.

Eastside Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Richard Burke told the Seattle Times the person didn’t show signs of illness but went to the hospital as a precaution, as officials weren’t sure what was in the box.

Tests of the liquid later revealed it to be urine that was “disposed of appropriately in a bio container,” fire officials told KOMO.

“All is well,” the theater said Saturday on its website. “The emergency vehicles you may have seen in front of the theatre on Friday, November 29, were there in response to our call regarding a mislabeled package that was leaking an unknown liquid.”

The theater praised the “professionalism” of Eastside Fire and Rescue and the Snoqualmie Police Department, saying there was no danger and they would open for business on Saturday to show “Frozen II.”

Washington mother killed by estranged husband while sitting in minivan with 3 children

A Washington state woman with a restraining order was shot and killed by her estranged husband while sitting in a minivan with her mother and three young children, authorities said.

“After ongoing domestic violence, abuse and being released on bail, my brother-in-law decided to take my sister’s life into his own hands,” Tabitha Ojeda said on GoFundMe Wednesday, a day after the shooting at an elementary school in Hazel Dell, Wash. “With my mother, sister and three kids in the car he shot through the front windshield and driver’s side.”

Ojeda was the sister of Tiffany Hill and the sister-in-law of Keland Hill, 38.

Seattle police captain busted in prostitution sting after offering $40 to undercover cop: reports

A police captain in Seattle was among the five men arrested this week in a prostitution string, reports say.

ICE says Washington murder suspect was released twice before, despite detainers

An illegal immigrant with a criminal history dating to 2010 was released from jail by local authorities in Washington state on two separate occasions despite Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers lodged again him, the agency said Thursday.

In addition, ICE said that Julio Cruz-Velazquez, 25, was arrested and released from jail before the agency could lodge a detainer request on seven further occasions.

Cruz-Velazquez, who entered the U.S. illegally from Mexico, was arrested by Seattle police and charged with homicide on Nov. 7. The agency lodged a detainer for him on the same day with the King County Jail.

“When law enforcement agencies do not honor ICE detainers or simple notification requests, the individuals they release, who often have significant criminal histories, are turned out into an unsuspecting community, free to continue their criminal behavior and seek out new victims,” the agency said in a statement. “Such is the case of Julio Cruz-Velazquez.”

FLASHBACK: WASHINGTON GOV. JAY INSLEE SIGNS ‘SANCTUARY STATE’ LAW

ICE said it had previously lodged detainers for Cruz-Velazquez with the King County Jail on July 9 of last year, two days after he was arrested by the Tukwila Police Department and charged with rape and domestic violence; and on Jan. 7 of this year, three days after he was arrested by the same department and charged with failure to comply and driving under the influence.

On both occasions, Cruz-Velazquez was released without the King County Jail notifying ICE, the agency said.

“Local law enforcement failed the public in this case on multiple occasions,” ICE Seattle field office director Nathalie Asher said. “Prior to Julio Cruz-Velazquez’s most recent arrest for murder, ICE lodged detainers on him twice. Had those detainers been honored, or had ICE been notified on any of the other multiple occasions he was arrested and released from local jails, we would have taken him into custody.”

“Regrettably, politics continues to prevail over public safety,” Asher said. “The detainers were ignored and Cruz-Velazquez was released to the street.”

Julio Cruz-Velazquez (King County Department of Corrections)

“Because sanctuary policies restrict ICE’s access to local databases, pushing ICE agents out of jails and the associated political pressure discouraging local law enforcement from effectively communicating with federal immigration officials, ICE is often unaware of a criminal alien being in custody prior to them being released,” the agency said. “These misguided policies hinder ICE’s ability to lodge immigration detainers in a timely manner.”

On April 4, Cruz-Velazquez was convicted of second-degree assault, a class B felony that carries a sentence up to 10 years in prison. He was booked into Nisqually Jail on July 10 and charged with a community custody violation but was released the next day, before ICE could lodge a detainer, the agency said.

MISSING MISSOURI WOMAN JENNIFER ROTHWELL’S DISAPPEARANCE CLASSIFIED AS HOMICIDE, HUSBAND IN CUSTODY

On July 27, 2017, he was arrested by the Seattle Police Department and charged with burglary and malicious mischief, but he was released without ICE having time to lodge the detainer against him, according to the agency.

A similar sequence of events played out five additional times: in August 2015, when Cruz-Velazquez was arrested by Seattle police for failure to comply; in June 2012 when Seattle authorities charged him with possession of a stolen vehicle, and three times between 2010 and 2012 when he was arrested on local charges that included robbery and manufacturing and possessing a controlled substance, the agency said.

Cruz-Velazquez had been convicted in November 2015 of vehicle prowling. He was sentenced to 364 days in jail and 12 months of community service and was released at an unknown date.

FLORIDA MARINE VETERAN WHO KILLED 2 POLICE OFFICERS SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY, JURY DECIDES

Cruz-Velazquez entered the United States in February 2000. He voluntarily returned to Mexico the day after being encountered by Border Patrol, ICE said. He later illegally re-entered at an unknown date and location, the agency said.

He is most recently charged with first-degree murder in the death of 56-year-old Sam Nang Lam, a Vietnamese man who died from two gunshot wounds to the back, according to police, The Seattle Times reported.

Jail records show that Cruz-Velazquez remains in custody on $2 million bail.

“Because of this recklessness, a man who immigrated legally to the U.S. has lost his life, allegedly at the hands of a repeat criminal and immigration offender,” Asher said. “This is yet another death that could have been prevented, had local law enforcement cooperated with ICE toward the common goal of public safety, as we have so effectively done in years past.”

Washington state man charged with murdering half-sister whose body turned up in suitcase

The 2016 murder of a woman who feared her half-brother was going to kill her has led to the brother’s arrest, Washington state investigators announced Tuesday.

Jamie Haggard, 27, and David Haggard, 45, shared a home and a volatile relationship before the murder, police said. Haggard was charged with second-degree murder.

“On numerous occasions, Jamie told her boyfriend she feared David was going to kill her,” the King County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Jamie Haggard was last seen on June 9, 2016. Two weeks later, her father reported her missing.

Prosecutors alleged in court papers that in order to conceal the murder, Haggard “dismembered her, burned her, stuffed her in a suitcase and discarded her by the side of the road, thus preventing her family–his own family–the opportunity to know what had become of her for almost two long years.”

The prosecutors added, “In the meantime, he carried on with the charade of pretending to be worried about her and wondering where she was.”

Vegan married to hunter opens up about lifestyle, rules for happy marriage: ‘People think it’s really far out’

A couple from Washington state is proving true love can overcome any dietary restriction.

Tandi Rolen, a 28-year-old yoga instructor, is a vegan — meaning she abstains from consuming meat or any animal byproduct. Meanwhile, Mitchell Rolen, her husband, works as a fishing guide and is a proud hunter.

However, despite their differences, Tandi and her hunter husband, who have been married since January 2015, manage to make it work together.

The high school sweethearts met at 16 — four years before Tandi adopted a plant-based diet to focus on her health, Daily Mail reports. Tandi became fully vegan a month after the pair wed.

“I became so passionate about the positive effects of a vegan diet and I wanted to share it with the world. I understood the negative habits the western world has, and wanted to be a part of the conscious shift towards healing for all,” she said, according to the Daily Mail.

Tandi admits it was a rocky start as she initially did try to force her newfound diet on her husband, before letting go of “the pressure of my husband having the same food values.

“What saved my marriage was realizing that people will not change if you tell them what they’re doing is wrong. You have to lead by example and lead with compassion and understanding.”

Eventually, Tandi claims Mitchell came on board with her food philosophy and vowed to only eat meat that he himself killed using a bow and arrow. He also agreed to store his meat products in the garage and not the house, she said.

“People think it’s really far out. But it works for us because we’re able to integrate our values to be the best version of ourselves,” said Tandi, noting the pair still eats together, and her husband will just add “deer or grouse” to his meal.

“Everyone is so far on one side of the spectrum. But the truth is everything is not a one-size-fits-all — lifestyle and diet included. We have to integrate. And we must take the best options on both sides and practice them.”

A senior Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee introduced a bill Thursday seeking to reclaim $3.6 billion in emergency funds the Trump administration reallocated to fund a U.S.-Mexico border wall.

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said the Stopping Executive Overreach on Military Appropriations Act (SEOMA) would reinstate funding for 127 military projects in 26 states and territories, including an $89 million naval base project within her home state of Washington.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper last month signed off on $3.6 billion in Defense Department construction funds for 175 miles of wall on the border.

“The President’s decision to use a phony emergency declaration to take money away from our service members and their families is a gross abuse of executive power that hurts military families in my state and others, and puts our nation’s security at risk,” Murray said in a statement.

“We’re taking action to not only reverse President Trump’s reckless decision to ransack funds for critical military priorities and infrastructure projects that help keep our country safe, such as the pier and maintenance facility at Naval Base Kitsap in my home state of Washington, but also to make sure no President going forward can take reckless, harmful steps like this one.”

In August, the Supreme Court cleared the way for the government to use about $2.5 billion in Defense Department funds after that money had been frozen by lower courts while a lawsuit was proceeding. Trump had directed $155 million to be diverted to border facilities from FEMA disaster relief.

Co-sponsors of Murray’s bill were Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Brian Schatz of Hawaii. The proposed legislation would also direct the Office of Government Ethics to review all current and future contracts related to the border wall to determine if the president, his family, or his top allies would personally profit from such contracts, or if there is any conflict of interest, the news release said.

Murray acknowledged the bill would likely not pass in the GOP-controlled Senate, but told the Kitsap Sun that there were lawmakers from both sides of the aisle who were interested in halting the border funding and redirecting it back toward the military projects.

A Seattle man was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for making threats against President Trump’s family, members of the media and synagogues.

Chase Bliss Colasurdo, 27, was arrested last May after he posted a photo on Instagram of a gun pointed at a picture of Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and adviser.

He pleaded guilty to threatening to bomb synagogues, hurt media members in Southern California and to making online threats to Kushner and Donald Trump, Jr.

Colasurdo was arrested after he bought a bulletproof vest and ammunition. He also tried to buy a gun but was denied after being flagged by the Secret Service.

He has a history of severe mental illness and paranoid delusions, authorities said.
