The scientist has had experience BASE jumping, previously leading a wingsuit design team at the University of Southampton and was crowned a British wingsuit champion just last month, the BBC reported.

His family told the broadcaster that Grubisic was “phenomenally talented” and lost his life “doing what he loved the most, wingsuit base jumping.”

“We want to ensure his achievements and ambitions are known to the world and to celebrate the mark he made on all of our lives,” the family’s statement continued. “Angelo captivated the hearts and minds of every single person who was privileged to meet and work with him.”

Russia cancels evacuation after missile explosion, claims tests show radiation levels ‘normal’

Russia’s military appeared to do an about-face Tuesday after telling residents of a village near a navy testing range to evacuate after a mysterious explosion, only to cancel the order hours later.

The decision added to the uncertainty surrounding the incident as local officials claimed soil samples showed that radiation levels have not risen after the blast.

The deadly explosion nearly a week ago took place at a military shooting range in Nyonoksa, located in the far northern Arkhangelsk region.

Russia’s state weather agency, Rosgidromet, revealed Tuesday that radiation levels had spiked by four to 16 times after the accident in the port city of Severodvinsk, located about 12 miles from the military testing range. Local authorities in Severodvinsk, a city of 183,000, initially reported a brief spike in radiation levels after the explosion but claimed it didn’t pose any health hazards.

But by Tuesday, Russia’s military told residents in Nyonoksa, a village of about 500, to leave as part of an evacuation already planned due to unspecified activities at the test range. Hours later, however, the military said the planned activities were canceled and residents were allowed to stay home, Severodvinsk regional administration told the Associated Press.

RADIATION LEVELS AT RUSSIAN TEST SITE SPIKED UP TO 16 TIMES ABOVE NORMAL AFTER EXPLOSION

A resident of Nyonoksa told local news outlet TV29.ru that locals are frequently told to leave the area, according to the Moscow Times.

“It happens regularly — about once per month — and everybody is evacuated from the village,” the man was quoted as saying.

Russia’s Defense Ministry initially said the blast killed two people and injured six, but the state-controlled nuclear agency, Rosatom, later disclosed that the explosion killed five of its workers and injured three others. Nearly a week after the blast, it’s still not clear what the final death toll is.

After Thursday’s missile explosion, the Severodvinsk city administration said the radiation level rose to 2 microsieverts per hour for about 30 minutes before returning to the area’s natural level of 0.1 microsieverts per hour. Emergency officials issued a warning to all workers to stay indoors and close the windows, while fearful residents rushed to buy iodine pills, which can help limit the damage from exposure to radiation.

By Wednesday, local emergency officials said after taking ground samples from around the area, laboratory analysis has found no trace of radioactive contamination, the TASS news agency reported.

“Over all these days, the natural background in the cities of Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk and Novodvinsk, in the Primorsky and Onezhsky districts has stayed within normal levels,” a statement said.

Neither the Defense Ministry nor Rosatom named the type of rocket that exploded during the test, saying only that it had liquid propellant, but the state-controlled nuclear agency said the explosion occurred while engineers were testing “a nuclear isotope power source” for a rocket.

RUSSIA’S SECRET NUCLEAR-POWERED CRUISE MISSILE MAY HAVE BEEN FACTOR IN MYSTERIOUS BLAST THAT KILLED AT LEAST 5

U.S. defense officials and outside observers believe it was a missile Russia calls the 9M730 Burevestnik. The NATO alliance has designated it the SSC-X-9 Skyfall, which was first revealed by Russian President Vladimir Putin in March 2018 along with other doomsday weapons.

During his 2018 state of the nation address, Putin unveiled the missile, along with other new weapons that he said made NATO’s U.S.-led missile defense system “useless.” The Russian leader claimed the nuclear-powered cruise missile had an unlimited range, flew at a high speed and was capable of maneuverability that would allow it to pierce any missile defense.

One of the world’s most respected missile experts, Director of East Asia Nonproliferation Program Jeffrey Lewis, said Tuesday the U.S. tried to develop a similarly powered cruise missile in the 1950s and 60s but abandoned the project because it didn’t make sense to put a nuclear reactor inside a missile.

“It was a technological nightmare and an ecological hazard,” Lewis told Fox News. “This is not a technology that I think makes a lot of sense for the United States. For whatever reason, the Russians have a different sense, maybe because they treat environmentalists differently than we do in the United States.”

Lewis said from the shape of the cruise missile, it appears that it flies subsonic, below the speed of sound, and is “more like an airplane.”

“I am not sure this system is ever going to work,” he added.

Tanker truck in Tanzania explodes as people siphon fuel, at least 62 killed

A damaged tanker truck exploded in Tanzania Saturday, with at least 62 people burning to death, making it one of the worst incidents of this kind in the country.

At least 70 people more were injured, many suffering from serious burns, in the incident in the town of Morogoro – about 120 miles west of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s economic capital – as people were trying to siphon fuel out of the tanker truck.

Skydiving plane crash in Sweden leaves 9 dead, officials say

Nine people were killed Sunday when a small plane carrying a group of skydivers crashed shortly after takeoff in Sweden, officials said.

The crash happened shortly after 2 p.m. on Storsandskar island not long after the plane took off from Umea Airport, located in the northern part of the country.

Swedish airport authority Swedavia said the plane involved in the crash was a GippsAero GA8 Airvan, an Australian-made single-engine aircraft popular with parachutists.

Ruins of bridge in Italy demolished nearly a year after deadly collapse

The remnants of a bridge in Italy that collapsed last summer, killing 43 people, were finally torn down as a planned explosion cleared the structure in Genoa on Friday morning.

The Morandi Bridge, which linked the port city to a high-speed highway leading to the French Riviera and another highway leading to Milan, was brought down in a matter of a few seconds after a planned explosion went off at 9:37 a.m. local time.

Some 3,500 people who live nearby had been evacuated as a precaution on Thursday and before dawn on Friday. Before leaving, many had covered windows and doors with plastic sheeting in a bid to prevent dust from infiltrating their homes.

TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE COMES CRASHING DOWN IN PLANNED  DEMOLITION

The blast was an effort to remove the remaining pillars and road that did not come down during the deadly August 14 collapse that killed 43 people last summer.

While officials have not yet named an official cause, the bridge, first built in 1967, had undergone tremendous stress from the 25 million vehicles that traveled it on average every year and sea air that heavily corroded the steel rods suspending the road, the BBC reported.

Traffic and severe thunderstorms were likely catalysts as the bridge collapsed on the eve of Italy’s chief summer holiday, Ferragosto.

World-famed architect Renzo Piano, a Genoa native, has designed a replacement bridge that will feature 43 lamps dotting the span in tribute to those who lost their lives.

Genoa Mayor Mario Bucci said engineers will check to see if the nearby apartment buildings are still sound after Friday’s explosion. If they give the all-clear, residents will be allowed to return to their homes.

Europe heatwave breaks records in Germany, Czech Republic as region sizzles

A scorching heatwave is baking western and central Europe, setting new temperature records for June in Germany and the Czech Republic as forecasters warn it will get hotter before the heat dissipates.

German weather agency Deutscher Wetterdienst said Wednesday a preliminary reading showed it reached 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit in Coschen, Germany, near the Polish border. The new record is a tenth-of-a-degree higher than the previous national record for June, set in 1947 in southwestern Germany.

Radzyn, Poland, also recorded a new national high of 100.7 Fahrenheit, while Doksany in the Czech Republic experienced high temperatures of 101.3 Fahrenheit.

The searing temperatures in Germany caused authorities to imposed speed limits of 62 mph or 75 mph on several short stretches of the highway until further notice in the eastern Saxony-Anhalt state. Those stretches usually don’t have speed limits, but officials are concerned the high heat could cause expressway surfaces to buckle.

A forest fire about 70 miles southeast of Berlin has ripped through nearly 300 acres of land near the town of Lieberoser, triggering a large emergency response, Sky News reported.

In France, more than half the country has placed the heat warning level at orange — the second highest alert — as temperatures up to 102 Fahrenheit are forecast for the Paris area later this week.

Because such high temperatures are rare in France, most homes and many buildings do not have air conditioning. Multiple days of extreme heat and warm nights will not allow buildings to cool down and will also be combined with high humidity levels.

French charities and local officials were providing extra help for the elderly, the homeless and the sick this week, remembering some 15,000 people, many of them elderly, died in France during a 2003 heat wave.

“The difference with 2003 is the very high humidity this year, which means it will feel much hotter than the temperature shown by the thermometer and so the discomfort felt will be greater than in 2003,” France’s Health Minister Agnès Buzyn told reporters.

In Paris on Wednesday, authorities banned older cars from the city for the day since heat aggravates pollution problems. Regional authorities estimated the measure, targeting gasoline vehicles from 2005 or older and diesel cars from 2010 or older, affects nearly 60 percent of vehicles circulating in the Paris region.

“We’ve received 1,000 re-usable drinking bottles from the city that we’ve started handing out to people so they can have water with them,” Salvation Army director Emmanuel Ollivier told France 24. “And they have access to showers. We provide more than 300 showers a day.”

The heatwave is being caused by a plume of dry, hot air moving north from Africa over continental Europe this week.

Professor Hannah Cloke, a natural hazards researcher at Britain’s University of Reading, said the heat along with a build-up of humidity was a “potentially lethal combination.”

“Children, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions are particularly at risk,” she told The Associated Press.
