Bomb cyclone washes up ‘ghost ship’ in Ireland, UK reels from flooding

An explosive winter storm that roared across the North Atlantic over the weekend, packing high winds and heavy rain, was fierce enough to wash up a cargo ship that had been drifting at sea since 2018 onto the Irish coast.

The Met Office, Britain’s meteorological service, said Storm Dennis brought a month’s worth of rain in just 48 hours to parts of South Wales, causing major flooding throughout the region as authorities fanned out to rescue people from homes and businesses.

The storm was dubbed a “bomb cyclone” after rapidly intensifying near Iceland Friday before slamming Britain and Ireland over the weekend. The National Weather Service Ocean Prediction Center said Storm Dennis deepened by 40 millibars in 24 hours, becoming one of the five strongest non-tropical cyclones on record in the North Atlantic.

BOMB CYCLONE STORM RIPS ACROSS UK, SPAWNS MOST FLOOD WARNINGS, ALERTS IN ENGLAND ‘THAN ANY OTHER DAY ON RECORD’

The Irish Coast Guard said it responded on Sunday after a cargo ship that had been drifting at sea since its crew was rescued in 2018 ended up on the rocks near Ballycotton, located on the country’s south coast.

“There was nobody on board,” according to the Irish Coast Guard.

Officials in Ireland said the U.S. Coast Guard had rescued the 10 crew members from the vessel back in September 2018. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a cutter rescued Alta’s 10 crew members on Oct. 8, 2018, when the vessel became disabled 1,380 miles southeast of Bermuda.

At the time of the rescue, the crew members had been stranded on the ship for 20 days after transiting from Greece to Haiti when the ship broke down and repairs were unable to be made.

“The vessel has been drifting since,” Irish officials said.

Cork’s Evening Echo newspaper reported a county council team was preparing to assess the wreck of the “ghost ship” for possible oil leaks.

“It is located on a dangerous and inaccessible stretch of coastline and is in an unstable condition,” the Cork County Council said it a statement to the news outlet.

Major incidents have been declared in a number of areas in England and Wales as authorities mobilized resources to deal with the impact of the overflowing rivers that have cut off some communities. Dennis has been so intense that England posted a record number of flood warnings and alerts. In addition, a rare “red warning,” for extremely life-threatening flooding, was announced for South Wales.

A man in his 60s died after falling into the River Tawe in South Wales mid-morning and his body was found further along the river, Dyfed-Powys Police said on social media. Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious or being linked to the bad weather.

On Saturday, Storm Dennis was blamed for the deaths of two men who were pulled from the sea in separate searches off England’s southeastern coast.

The British Red Cross said that with water levels expected to peak on Monday or Tuesday it was ready to respond across the country.

“British Red Cross have been liaising with relevant local authorities, offering to support people affected by Storm Dennis across the U.K.,” its crisis response officer Georgie Timmins said.

Australia wildfires ‘contained’ in New South Wales for first time in ‘exhausting’ fire season

After months of battling wildfires that scorched thousands of homes and created mass evacuations in eastern Australia, officials announced Thursday that all the blazes in the New South Wales state are considered contained after recent rains.

New South Wales Rural Fire Service‘s deputy commissioner Rob Rogers said in a video posted Twitter that while there is still some fire activity in the southern part of the state, emergency workers can now focus on “helping people rebuild.”

“After what’s been a truly devastating fire season for both firefighters and residents, who’ve suffered so much this season, all fires are now contained in New South Wales,” Rogers said.

AUSTRALIA RAIN MAY PUT OUT REMAINING WILDFIRES IN NEW SOUTH WALES BY END OF WEEK AFTER RECENT DELUGE

Rogers said all fires are contained, meaning that a perimeter has been established around the blazes to prevent additional spread.

The fire service said while “substantial rain” has recently fallen in some areas, firefighters continue to work on 24 bush and grass fires.

“The main focus now for crews is to locate and extinguish any remaining hotspots,” RFS said.

HEAVY RAIN IN AUSTRALIA EXTINGUISHES MAJOR WILDFIRE, CAUSES FLASH FLOODING

In all, Australia’s wildfires killed at least 33 people and destroyed more than 3,000 homes. The fires began causing widespread destruction toward the end of 2019, which was both the hottest and driest year in Australia’s recorded history, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Ferocious storm in Europe kills 8, causes travel disruptions

Ferocious winds with gusts over 125 mph lashed Corsica and whipped up a forest fire that flared overnight on the French Mediterranean island on Tuesday, after a storm with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains battered northern Europe for days, killing at least eight people and causing severe travel disruptions.

More than 300 fire officers were involved in fighting the blazes and two ports were closed and flights suspended on Corsica. Power was cut to 2,000 homes.

The storm also continued to batter other parts of Europe. Fallen trees blocked roads and train tracks in southern Germany and Austria.

The Austrian city of Salzburg near the German border was hit by the storm Tuesday. Public broadcaster ORF reported that more than 400 firefighters worked for hours to remove downed trees from crushed cars and roads. They also had to remove a huge metal roof that was blown off a building. No one was injured, ORF reported.

Heavy rain in Australia extinguishes major wildfire, causes flash flooding

After weeks of devastating wildfires, Australia’s east coast is now experiencing major flash flooding caused by downpours across the region.

While the rain is good news for fire-ravaged and drought-stricken areas, a severe weather warning was in effect Sunday along most of the New South Wales coast and parts of Queensland to the north.

Heavy rain, damaging winds, and abnormally high tides are in the forecast.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service reported six flood rescues overnight near Grafton, north of Sydney, amid dozens of calls for help over the past two days. The people who were rescued became stranded while attempting to drive through floodwater.

Assistant Commissioner Karen Webb told Australia’s 7 News that NSW Police were hard-pressed to respond to the emergency Sunday.

“There are currently hundreds of calls for assistance, including trees, boulders or power poles down onto cars and homes, and across roads, as well as power outages and localized flooding impacting various roads and traffic lights,” Webb told 7 News.

Some east coast towns have received in recent days their heaviest rainfall in five decades as Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology warned of “dangerous conditions” this weekend.

The heavy rains have also caused roadways and railways to be flooded. High winds in Sydney caused a tree to fall on a car in the city center Sunday afternoon, injuring four people.

But the NSW Rural Fire Service said the recent rains put out the Currowan Fire south of Sydney late Saturday after it destroyed 312 homes and blackened 1.2 million acres over 74 days.

Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said he hoped the heavy rain would move inland from the coast and drench more of the major fires that have been raging for months.

Which were the worst blizzards? Here are the deadliest storms in history

The fierce winds and heavy snow that can immobilize a region during a blizzard also can lead to some of the most deadly storms.

Winter weather that impacts public safety and transportation – such as snow, sleet, ice – typically occurs between Oct. 14 and April 14, the National Weather Service says.

According to the NWS, a blizzard is defined as sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or more, and snow and blowing snow that reduce visibility to less than a quarter of a mile for three hours or more.

WINTER STORM WARNING VS. WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: HERE’S THE DIFFERENCE

Here are some of the deadliest blizzards in record:

‘The Storm of the Century’ in 1993, at least 270 deaths in 13 states

The Superstorm of 1993 dubbed the “Storm of the Century” was one of the most intense storms ever recorded in the Eastern U.S.

The storm system bore down on half the U.S. from March 12 to 14 causing $5.5 billion in damage and killing more than 270 people in 13 different states.

“With a central pressure usually found only in Category 3 hurricanes, the storm spawned tornadoes and left coastal flooding, crippling snow, and bone-chilling cold in its wake,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

Snow totals reached up to 56 inches in Mount LeConte, Tenn., while a width swath of 1 to 2 feet of snow was reported across the eastern seaboard.

“In terms of human impact, the Superstorm of 1993 was more significant than most landfalling hurricanes or tornado outbreaks, and ranks among the deadliest and most costly weather events of the 20th century,” according to the NWS.

Blizzards of 1888, up to 900 dead in Midwest, Northeast

A pair of blizzards during the winter of 1888 created brutal and deadly conditions spanning the country.

One of the storms struck the Northern Plains on Jan. 12, 1888, as a mild day that melted earlier snow quickly changed. Temperatures dropped as low as 40 degrees below zero in a matter of hours. Fierce winds up to 60 mph created an ensuing whiteout dubbed “The Children’s Blizzard” due to the many children who died walking home from school.

“A contributing factor to the death toll was the poor construction of many homes and schoolhouses built as the upper Midwest was experiencing a pioneer boom,” according to the NWS.

Between 250 and 500 people perished in that storm.

Just a few months later, another storm dubbed the “Great Blizzard of 1888” struck the Northeast over several days, dropping between 40 to 50 inches of snow and creating snow drifts 30 to 40 feet deep.

“The storm cut off and immobilized East Coast cities, crippling transportation and affecting one quarter of the U.S. population,” the NWS notes.

Iran Blizzard in 1972, at least 4,000 deaths

At least 4,000 people were killed when a series of blizzards crippled Iran for six days in February 1972, leaving people buried in some places.

While parts of northern and central Iran saw upward of 10 feet of snow, some locations in the southern part of the country had 26 feet.

The Associated Press reported at the time that rescue workers dug through snowdrifts in the village of Skeklab for two days only to find 18 frozen bodies. There were no survivors in the village of 100.

Temperatures that dropped to -13 degrees Fahrenheit made the situation worse as many were left without water, food, heat and medical aid for days.

Georgia man burned in New Zealand volcano eruption dies 5 weeks after wife’s death, leaves behind 3 kids

A Georgia man died Tuesday from severe burns suffered in a New Zealand volcanic eruption last month, just five weeks after his wife succumbed to similar injuries, a family member said.

Pratap Singh, 49, and his 42-year-old wife, Mayuari, are survived by their twin 6-year-old girls and an 11-year-old boy, the couple’s nephew Vick Singh said in a statement. He wrote that they might have been saved if the tourism operator provided safety equipment.

NEW ZEALAND ORDERS 1,290 SQUARE FEET OF SKIN FOR VOLCANO VICTIMS, DOCTOR SAYS HOSPITAL ‘LIKE A WAR ZONE’

Known as Paul and Mary, the Atlanta-area couple had been visiting New Zealand’s White Island volcano with dozens of other tourists on Dec. 9 when it erupted, scalding them with super-heated water from below the crater surface.

“I visited Paul and Mary every day since Dec. 10 while they were at the Middlemore Hospital, the last 50 days of my life were distressing, slow and agonizing painful,” Vick Singh wrote. “Proper safety equipment would have saved my family.”

Paul battled for 50 days before dying from the burns to 55 percent of his body, with doctors describing him as a fighter after undergoing multiple surgeries and treatments, Singh said. Mary had suffered burns to 72 percent of her body and died Dec. 22.

“We miss them dearly and their memories are going to stay fresh in our hearts and minds for the times to come,” Singh wrote. “This changes everything, a new normal might be impossible to achieve for our family.”

Several victims have died in the hospital in the weeks since the eruption, bringing the death toll to 21.

The island was crowded with 47 tourists from around the world when the eruption occurred, including 24 from Australia, nine Americans, two from China, four from Germany, five people from New Zealand, two from the United Kingdom, and one person from Malaysia.

Burns units at hospitals across the country were at full capacity treating 29 of the rescued victims. New Zealand ordered 1,290 square feet of skin from the U.S. to treat the dozens of victims suffering severe burns. Doctors have said the recovery process would take several months.

Tourists who had visited the island immediately before the eruption told The Associated Press they were provided with minimal safety equipment such as hard hats and optional gas masks, which they could wear if they had trouble breathing.

Singh has called on volcano tourism operators to provide heat-resistant clothing, safety glasses, helmets, and masks.

Tour operator White Island Tours has so far declined to comment in detail on what went wrong that day, according to The Associated Press.

New Zealand authorities are investigating the circumstances around the disaster. Many have questioned why tourists were allowed on the island after authorities raised its alert level three weeks before the eruption.

At least 38 killed in Turkey earthquake, officials say

Rescue crews in Turkey worked through Sunday to pull survivors from collapsed buildings in the country’s east where a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Friday, claiming at least 38 lives.

The quake injured more than 1,600 people but at least 45 survivors have been pulled alive from the rubble so far, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters in Istanbul Sunday.

More than 780 aftershocks rocked the eastern region as over 3,500 rescue experts scrambled through wrecked buildings to reach survivors.

As overnight temperatures dropped to 23 degrees Fahrenheit, emergency teams set up more than 9,500 tents for displaced residents and distributed 17,000 hot meals.

The agency said nearly 80 buildings were destroyed and more than 1,000 were damaged. Unmanned aerial drones were being used to survey damaged neighborhoods and coordinate rescue efforts.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said 20 of the aftershocks measured magnitude 4.0 or above, including a magnitude 4.3 quake that hit the neighboring province of Malatya Sunday morning.

Sea foam floods streets of Spanish town during deadly storm

A powerful winter storm that battered Spain for days caused the streets of a seaside town near Barcelona to be flooded with sea foam.

The storm arrived on Sunday, bringing heavy snow, rain, and gale-force winds to Spain before moving into southern France. On Tuesday, the storm caused high waves that generated sea foam to inundate the coastal town of Tossa de Mar.

Footage obtained by the Associated Press showed waves crashing in over Tossa de Mar’s beach, with floodwater moving past shoreline restaurants and businesses on its way to the old town center. Tossa de Mar is located about 90 minutes north of Barcelona.

WINTER STORM IN SPAIN CAUSED SURGE THAT ‘RAVAGED’ MAJOR DELTA AREA

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, sea foam forms when organic and artificial matter in the ocean is agitated by wind and waves.

Algal blooms are one common source of thick sea foams. When large blooms of algae decay offshore, great amounts of decaying algal matter often wash ashore. Sea foam then forms as that organic matter is churned up by the surf, according to NOAA.

“Most sea foam is not harmful to humans and is often an indication of a productive ocean ecosystem,” according to the agency. “But when large harmful algal blooms decay near shore, there are potentials for impacts to human health and the environment.”

Authorities in Tossa de Mar described the situation as complicated but told residents the foam did not pose an immediate threat to humans. Local residents were seen assisting in removing the foam but a constant wind kept whipping it up, hampering clean-up efforts.

WINTER STORM LASHES SPAIN FOR THIRD DAY, KILLING AT LEAST 4, CUTTING POWER TO THOUSANDS

Gloria, the powerful winter storm, left more than 200,000 people without electricity as it battered Spain, closing more than 200 roads. Schools canceled classes for more than 5,700 pupils.

Last decade was the most expensive for natural disasters, over $1 trillion increase, report says

Severe weather such as devastating flooding and powerful hurricanes contributed to why the last decade was the worst on record for economic losses due to natural disasters around the globe, according to a report released Wednesday.

Insurance broker Aon said in its “Weather, Climate & Catastrophe Insight: 2019 Annual Report” that the period between 2010 and 2019 marked the costliest decade on record, with economic damage reaching some $2.98 trillion, about $1.19 trillion more than the period from 2000 to 2009.

“Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the last decade of natural disasters was the emergence of previously considered ‘secondary’ perils – such as wildfire, flood, and drought – becoming much more costly and impactful,” Steve Bowen, director and meteorologist at Aon’s impact forecasting team, said in a news release.

WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019: HERE ARE THE BIGGEST MOMENTS, FROM POLAR VORTEX TO HURRICANE DORIAN

The area that was worst hit in the last decade was the Asia-Pacific region, which accounted for 44 percent of the total amount of economic losses, according to the report.

In 2019, one of the greatest disasters was when Typhoon Hagibis struck Japan in October, causing 99 deaths and $15 billion in economic losses.

In its report, Aon said intense weather events, bigger populations in the path of disasters and greater supply chain disruption in a globalized economy contributed to the sharp rise in overall economic damage.

The costliest individual disaster in 2019 was inland flooding, which created losses of $82 billion, while tropical cyclones caused economic losses globally around $68 billion. In the U.S., flooding spawned by the bomb cyclone in the Midwest caused economic losses of over $20 billion, the report noted.

10 DEADLIEST US TORNADOES ON RECORD

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2019 was the second-hottest year in the agency’s 140-year climate record, just behind 2016.

The agency also noted that the world’s five warmest years have all occurred since 2015, with nine of the 10 warmest years occurring since 2005.

“Scientific research indicates that climate change will continue to affect all types of weather phenomena and subsequently impact increasingly urbanized areas,” Bowen said.

While Aon said economic and insured losses were lower in 2019 than the previous two years, there were 409 natural catastrophe events totaling $232 billion in losses.

Of those losses in 2019, $71 billion were covered by insurance programs, the report said.
