As we learn from the just-released transcript of the Trump/Zelenskiy July phone call that Democratic allegations of quid pro quo were a big nothingburger, now would be a good time to launch the wayback machine to see how Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden viewed impeachment proceedings when it was President Bill Clinton (D) on the hook.

Video from 1998 shows Pelosi, who recently stated about Trump that “no one is above the law”, talking about how the country would “suffer” because House Republicans were “paralyzed with hatred” for Clinton. “It’s about a punishment searching for a crime that doesn’t exist,” stated Rep. Pelosi at the time. Watch:

Joe Biden, who was a Senator in 1998, also spoke out against impeaching Clinton, insinuating his impeachment was more about politics than than principle:

[The president] is elected directly by the people of the United States of America. And the election of a president is the only nationwide vote the American people will ever cast and that’s a big deal. The American people don’t think that they have made a mistake by electing Bill Clinton and we in Congress had better be very careful before we upset their decision, and make darn sure that we are able convince them if we decide to upset their decision, that our decision to impeach him was based upon principle and not politics.

Watch:

In an interview with Fox News, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) explained that the rationale for impeaching Clinton was on much more solid footing than what Democrats have brought forth to date against Trump:

The hosts asked former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who led the impeachment proceedings against Clinton, about Pelosi’s remarks. Gingrich said, unlike the current impeachment push against Trump, Ken Starr’s report alleged crimes against Clinton, prompting the House to act.

“In the case of Clinton, he had actually broken the law. He had committed a felony in a case involving sexual predation against an employee. If that happened today, people would be going crazy. That’s not the case here,” said Gingrich, claiming Hunter Biden did a lot of “weird” business deals in Ukraine and China and Trump is within his rights to want that investigated.

As Cocaine Mitch noted earlier this week, impeachment is not a political tool Democrats should attempt to use in order to relitigate elections they’ve lost. Sadly, that’s exactly what they’ve done, both with the Mueller investigation and now this.

By the time Democrats are done crying for impeachment over “offenses” that are not impeachable, the word “impeach” will have lost all meaning – if it hasn’t been lost already.

As promised yesterday, the White House has released the transcript of the call between President Trump and Ukraine President Zelensky.

This is all there is of interest:

The President: I would like you to do us a favor though because our country has been through a lot and Ukraine knows a lot about it. I would like you to find out what happened with
this whole situation with Ukraine, they say Crowdstrike … I guess you have one of your weal thy people… The server, they say Ukraine has it. There are a lot of things that went on, the
:whole situation .. I think you 1 re _surrounding yourself with some of the same people. I would like to have the Attorney General call you or your people and I would like you to get to the
bottom of it. As you said yesterday, that whole nonsense ended with a very poor performance by a man named Robert Mueller, an incompetent performance-, but they say a lot of it started with
Ukraine. Whatever you can do, it’s very important that· you. do it if that’s possible.

Implication: there is a very serious investigation ongoing of how the Mueller investigation got launched and that includes looking into the DNC hacks in a manner that one would expect a law enforcement agency to respond to a crime, in other words, they aren’t letting the skells set the parameters of the investigation.

The President: Good because I heard you had a prosecutor who was very good and he was shut down and that’s really unfair. A lot of people are talking about that, the way they shut your very good prosecutor down and you had some very bad people involved. Mr. Giuliani is a highly respected man. He was the mayor bf New York City, a great mayor, and I would like him to call you. I will ask him to call yotu along with the Attorney General. Rudy very much knows what’s happening and he is a very capable guy. If you could speak to him that would be great. The former ambassador from the United States, the woman, was bad news and the people she was dealing with in the Ukraine were bad news so I just want to_let you know that. The other thing, There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you ·can look into it … It sounds horrible to me.

Part of this is going to drive the left bonkers. The so-called Ukraine experts claim that the guy who was fired was more corrupt than the people he was investigating. Was he? I don’t know, what I do know is that the unanimity of opinion and the frantic appeal to authority argument leads me to think it is bullsh**. They aren’t going to like him dissing the Ukraine ambassador who he fired. Screw ’em. And the statement on Biden and his son seem completely reasonable. At no point are there threats or implications of favors to be granted. And, ominously, the Attorney General is looking into this, too. So Biden and his fluffers probably shouldn’t get too far out over their skis lest they get embarrassed when Biden’s coked up kid gets indicted.

Read the whole document for yourself.

Homelessness and open drug use are rampant in the Golden State.

Morning, gang. Recorded a good show last night that I hope tells you all you’d ever want to know about what’s going on with this “impeachment inquiry” the Democrats have come up with to make it look like they’re serious on impeachment. For the record, I’m not sure they are because they don’t seem to have anything impeachment-worthy, including these new allegations about Trump and Ukraine. If the transcript is released to Congress today, we should know more about the alleged inappropriateness of the phone call between the two world leaders. I have a feeling it’s not going to go the Democrats’ way…

I took the opportunity to review Jim Gaffigan’s newest film, the gritty and uncomfortable “American Dreamer” (trailer below). Ooof…it’s a tough watch, but probably an important one if you’ve ever been sitting at the bottom of your life, looking up, and wondering what you’re capable of to get yourself out of the hole. I get into all that in the show.

Finally, there’s a lot in last night’s show about Twitter user and English rapper Zuby’s visit to the United States. If you’re unfamiliar with the guy, he’s an English musician who also opines quite a bit on policy (usually American) from a very English libertarian perspective.

He’s been tweeting his thoughts on the cities he’s been visiting and let’s just say his questions about what exactly is going on in California (San Francisco specifically) have been eye opening. I try to answer some of his questions.

Has a story ever blown up this much in such a short period of time?

We are less than a week removed from accusations of Trump committing “treason” and panel discussions on him being executed. Things have turned in a massive way though. We found out there was no quid pro quo or threat of withholding aid in the call to Ukraine. While that originally was a marker laid down by House Democrats, they decided to move ahead with impeachment even in its absence.

Then, like he had planned it or something, Trump says “sure, I’ll release the transcript,” essentially calling their bluff. Was this all an elaborate trap? Or at the very least, did Trump take advantage of a situation that presented itself? It sure is starting to seem that way.

It’s getting worse for Democrats though. After Trump promised to release the transcript, the goalposts suddenly moved to needing the entire complaint even though it is likely nothing but third hand conjecture. What does Trump do? Instead of fighting them, he green-lights its release as well, signaling there’s nothing really there.

This feels like the Mueller report all over again, where Democrats and the media were sure it contained evidence of collusion. Then, unexpectedly, Trump didn’t end up claiming executive privilege over any of it. It turned out to be a total dud, made only worse by Mueller’s public testimony on the matter.

Now, a new report says that the Intel Inspector General who took the complaint found the whistle-blower had significant political bias in favor of a “rival candidate” of Trump. That will be included in his report.

“A senior Trump administration official told Fox News late Tuesday that the administration will release a document showing the intelligence community inspector general found the whistleblower who leveled an explosive accusation against President Trump concerning his talks with Ukraine had ‘political bias’ in favor of ‘a rival candidate’ of the president,” Fox News reported. “The official did not identify the name of the rival candidate. Separately, a senior administration official told Fox News the White House has been working as quickly as it can to release to Congress the whistleblower complaint involving President Trump’s conversations with the leader of Ukraine, as long as it’s legally possible.”

I’m not normally a believer in Trump being anything other than a bull in a china shop when it comes to his political moves, and in many ways, that’s served him well. But this sure feels like he’s playing chess and everyone else is playing checkers.

The moment Pelosi announced the impeachment inquiry, they had campaign videos ready to go and Trump was on Twitter saying he’s releasing everything. He’s either about to incriminate himself or he’s just called their bluff in epic fashion. Right now, according to current reports about what’s actually in the complaint, the latter seems the most probable.

We may be witnessing the most savage troll in political history.

Talk of impeaching President Trump is once again at fever pitch in Washington, DC as the House’s Orange Man Bad Caucus (erroneously) thinks they finally have enough goods on Trump to impeach him.

It’s increasingly likely that their latest foray into impeachment will go as disastrously as their last one, which perhaps is one reason of many why Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) issued a blistering statement this week noting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has lost control of her “far-left conference.”

More importantly, McConnell reminded Democrats once again that the process of impeachment is not a tool to be used for the highly partisan purpose of “relitigating” elections they’ve lost:

Washington Democrats have been searching for ways to reverse their 2016 election defeat since before President Trump was even inaugurated.

The result has been a two-and-a-half-year impeachment parade in search of a rationale. When investigations by Special Counsel Mueller and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence deflated their breathless accusations of a campaign conspiracy with Russia, Democrats have simply shifted to new arguments for their predetermined conclusion.

Speaker Pelosi’s much-publicized efforts to restrain her far-left conference have finally crumbled. House Democrats cannot help themselves. Instead of working together across party lines on legislation to help American families and strengthen our nation, they will descend even deeper into their obsession with relitigating 2016.

Here’s his full statement below:

President Trump has okayed a Wednesday release of the “complete, fully declassified and unredacted” transcript of his July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

In addition to that, Politico reports that the White House is in the process of releasing the “whistleblower” complaint that prompted the latest round of impeachment fever, which Congress could receive as soon as Friday.

Stay tuned.

Biden’s Press Conference Demonstrates What a Cowed and Compliant Political Media We Have

Westlake Legal Group Joe_Biden_hands Biden’s Press Conference Demonstrates What a Cowed and Compliant Political Media We Have Ukraine Politics Media Joe Biden hunter biden Front Page Stories Featured Story elections donald trump democrats delaware corruption Allow Media Exception

Yesterday, Joe Biden took a break from trying to find ways of getting male convicts into women’s prisons, sniffing the hair of random women and watching his poll trajectory begin to resemble the Hindenburg to try to make that hobo jump onto Nancy Pelosi’s Impeachment Express.

What is astonishing about this is that Joe Biden, himself, is at Ground Zero of this debacle. It was through his influence peddling, or conversely through Ukraine’s attempt to gain influence with Biden, that his drug addict, grifting whelp got a $50,000/month job on the board of directors of a Ukraine national gas company at the time when Joe Biden was allegedly the Obama administration’s point man on Ukraine policy. It is Joe Biden that we have on tape boasting about demanding–and getting–a Ukraine anti-corruption prosecutor fired because the guy was getting too close to his son. And yet, the political press acts like gentle stenographers.

Imagine if you will, President Trump being allowed to prose on for about 15 minutes with no interruptions and have the press cover the statement as Revelation and not even mention Trump’s role? Read this article to see how it was covered. Listen to the meek, barely audible questions asked as Biden strides majestically from the podium? Do those folks sound serious? No. They don’t.

After Biden was safely gone, then the spin started.

Wait…you don’t think there was a purpose in getting a free infomercial chock-a-block with his talking points distributed without contradiction? You don’t think there was value in getting every major print outlet to use his talking points as a segue to attacking Trump? He may be right about it not moving the needle but that isn’t because Biden wasn’t trying nor because he didn’t get a lot of help.

The dictionary defines psychosis as a severe mental disorder in which thought and emotions are so impaired that contact is lost with external reality. The person with this condition usually isn’t aware of his or her behavior. Democrats appear to be afflicted with this condition.

Devastated by Trump’s victory nearly three years ago and unable to accept it to this day, they are convinced of the alternate reality they have created. Instead of moving through the typical stages of grief and ultimately reaching acceptance, they remain stuck in denial. Their group malady has caused enormous damage to the country and it’s time for some shock therapy.

The reality which they are currently rejecting is that the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s office was engaged in an investigation of Burisma Holdings in 2016. Their examination turned up a series of odd payments being made to a company owned by then-Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and his business partner. Naturally, it was difficult for them to comprehend why Hunter, who had no previous business experience in the energy industry, had earned $3 million from Burisma between 2014 and 2015. Knowing that Joe Biden had been appointed by the Obama administration in early 2014 as their “point man” for Ukraine, investigators obviously suspected this arrangement might be corrupt and required further scrutiny.

In December 2015, the New York Times published a story that Burisma was under investigation. Joe Biden then learned that his son was about to be questioned by the prosecutor general’s office and the pressure from Biden (and the Obama administration) to prevent this from happening began.

In January 2016, the White House invited Ukrainian prosecutors to Washington to meet their US counterparts to discuss ways to fight corruption.

The Hill’s John Solomon described this meeting in a recent article:

The meeting, promised as training, turned out to be more of a pretext for the Obama administration to pressure Ukraine’s prosecutors to drop an investigation into the Burisma Holdings gas company that employed Hunter Biden and to look for new evidence in a then-dormant criminal case against eventual Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, a GOP lobbyist.

U.S. officials “kept talking about how important it was that all of our anti-corruption efforts be united,” said Andrii Telizhenko, the former political officer in the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington who organized and attended the meetings.

Solomon spoke to Nazar Kholodnytsky, Ukraine’s chief anti-corruption prosecutor, who had attended the meeting, shortly afterward. Kholodnytsky told him he saw evidence in Ukraine of political meddling in the U.S. election.

Still, the investigation into Burisma continued. In March 2016, Joe Biden took matters into his own hands and threatened to withhold $1 billion in aid unless the prosecutor who was about to question his son was fired. The Ukrainian government, close to bankruptcy, was forced to comply and Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin was fired.

The Vice President of the United States was ready to withhold $1 billion in aid to Ukraine to prevent legal problems for his son. This was an egregious abuse of power.

All of this, of course, is well documented. Biden himself boasted about it. (Why would he ever do that?)

Fast forward to July 25, 2019.

President Trump asks new Ukrainian President Volodymyr to reopen the investigation which Joe Biden improperly forced the former President to end in March 2016, threatening to withhold aid.

Trump was asking for Biden’s corrupt action to be reversed.

A whistleblower who is said to be highly partisan and who did not hear the conversation between President Trump and President Zelensky files a complaint with the Intelligence Community Inspector General. I won’t take you through the sequence of events of the last week because we are all too familiar with them.

A media uproar follows.

On Tuesday, President Trump announces he will release a transcript of the call on Wednesday.

Democrats, who have been demanding the transcript for days say that’s not good enough. MSNBC’s Chris Hayes worried about the trustworthiness of the transcript.

As did CNN’s Jake Tapper.

Before even reading the transcript which will be released hours from now, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry against President Trump. Democrats have seen no evidence yet. Neither the whistleblower or the Director of National Intelligence have testified before Congress, but that didn’t stop Pelosi from holding a press conference. Lawmakers in the House have not even taken a vote on this measure.

Recall the definition of psychosis above. Pelosi’s press conference showed that her “thoughts and emotions were so impaired that contact was lost with external reality.” It appeared that she wasn’t “aware of his or her behavior.” She was convinced of the alternate reality she (and the Democrats) have created. And she remains stuck in denial.

House Dems Push Federal Legislation On Red Flag Laws

=========
=========
Promoted from the diaries by streiff. Promotion does not imply endorsement.
=========
=========

House Democrats have made clear exactly who they wish to protect with red flag laws, and it’s not the people they claim to champion. In their bid to further restrict gun ownership, the progressive party is pushing full steam ahead to pass laws that would empower law enforcement to confiscate weapons from people without due process.

What is even more troubling for Second Amendment advocates is that some Republican representatives are playing ball with the Democrats, who have been using mass shootings to justify their anti-gun agenda. While prominent leftist politicians like Beto O’ Rourke are calling for gun confiscation, a recent action on the part of House Democrats demonstrates that perhaps they have some limitations on how far they will go to curb gun rights.

Democratic lawmakers voted to advance a proposal encouraging states to adopt red-flag legislation. The legislation provides support to states that strip due process rights from people, allowing authorities to easily seize guns and ammunition from those accused of posing a danger to themselves or others. They amended the bill to empower the federal government to give extreme risk protection orders in certain situations too. An amendment put forward by Republican representatives was rejected.

The rejected amendment would have applied red flag laws to individuals that are known to the authorities as gang members. Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO), who proposed the amendment, explained why the legislation should be altered. “The majority of violent crime, including gun violence, in the United States is linked to gangs,” he said. “My amendment is quite simple. It would allow the issuance of a red flag order against anyone whose name appears in a gang database if there was probable cause to include that individual in the database.”

The Democrats balked at the suggested amendment. They claimed that these types of databases are similar to no-fly lists that have wrongly flagged individuals with no ties to terrorism. “You know, California had these databases, and they finally stopped when they discovered that they had 3-year-olds on the databases as gang members,” said Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “So some of these are reliable, a lot of them are not.”

But as Buck indicated, his amendment would apply only to those added with probable cause, which is a higher bar to reach. Democrats continued to object to Buck’s proposal. Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) suggested a rather asinine scenario in which someone writes the number 13 on a piece of paper and is then designated as a member of MS-13.

The House Judiciary Committee eventually voted against the amendment, which would ostensibly protect potential victims of gang violence.

This move on the part of House Democrats is in keeping with the left’s overall approach to gun control, and it is difficult to ignore the racial element in this equation. Progressive media outlets typically amplify mass shootings that take place at schools, malls, or other areas with a high white population. If the shooter is white, they make sure the public knows all about his lack of melanin.

But these same news outlets are suspiciously quiet about the tragic number of gun homicides related to gang activity in inner cities like Chicago and Baltimore. It is apparent that their concern for white victims of gun violence is far more pronounced than their focus on minority victims, who are disproportionately impacted by gang-related homicides. Indeed, it is only when these mass shootings occur that Democrats in Congress push for red flag laws.

While the media and government are having a conversation on the impact of white nationalism on minority communities, the Democrats are ignoring an even more pernicious problem that kills thousands of blacks and Hispanics each year. It’s rather ironic considering the fact that the Democrats claim to be the party that cares about the needs of minority communities. But apparently, their passion for restricting firearms does not extend to protecting the lives of innocent minorities.

To Understand Conservatism vs. Progressivism, Contrast Boris Johnson and Greta Thunberg

Westlake Legal Group boris-johnson-620x300 To Understand Conservatism vs. Progressivism, Contrast Boris Johnson and Greta Thunberg United Nations General Assembly United Nations Front Page Stories Featured Story Featured Post Boris Johnson Allow Media Exception

When Greta Thunberg addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, the pessimism, hopelessness, and anger was palpable. The speech Prime Minister Boris Johnson delivered late Tuesday – acknowledging the wonder and limitations of scientific discovery while remaining optimistic and joyful – was the polar opposite, and perfectly illustrated the differences between conservatism and progressive socialism.

At the outset, Johnson outlined some of the challenges posed by emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.

No one can ignore a gathering force that is reshaping the future of every member of this assembly. There has been nothing like it in history. When I think of the great scientific revolutions of the past…I think of new tools that we acquired but over which we, the human race, had the advantage, which we controlled, and that is not necessarily the case in the digital age.

You may keep your secrets from your friends, from your parents, your children, your doctor, even your personal trainer, but it takes real effort to conceal your thoughts from Google.

And if that is true today, in future there may be nowhere to hide. Smart cities will pollulate with sensors all joined together by the Internet of Things. Bollards communing invisibly with lampposts so there is always a parking space for your electric car…but his technology could be used to keep every citizen under round-the-clock surveillance.

A future Alexa will pretend to take orders, but this Alexa will be watching you, clucking her tongue and stamping her foot. In future…your mattress will monitor your nightmares, your fridge will beep for more cheese, your front door will sweep wide the moment you approach like some silent butler.

Well, it sounds just like The Jetsons, complete with a nagging maid. The Jetsons imagined Alexa as a robot, but we know she’s formless, shapeless, but all-knowing. She collects our thoughts, our likes and dislikes, our habits, and that data, that knowledge, that intelligence, equals control.

Every day that we tap on our phones or work on our iPads…we not only leave our indelible spore in the ether, but we are, ourselves, becoming a resource, click by click, tap by tap. Just as the carboniferous period created the indescribable wealth, leaf by decaying leaf, of hydrocarbons, data is the crude oil of the modern economy, and we’re now in an environment where we don’t know who should own these oil fields. We don’t know who should have the rights or the title to these gushers of cash, and we don’t know who decides who to use that data, and can these algorithms be trusted with our lives and hopes?

Should the machines and only the machines decide whether or not we are eligible for a mortgage or insurance or what surgery or medicines we should receive? Are we doomed to a cold and heartless future in which the computer says yes, the computer says no, with the grim finality of an emperor in the arena?

How do you plead with an algorithm? How do you get it to see extenuating circumstances? Hnd how do we know that the machines have not been insidiously programmed to fool us or even to cheat us?

While allowing that “it is a deep human instinct to be wary of any technical progress,” Johnson said, we have so many wondrous possibilities, saying:

I am profoundly optimistic about the ability of new technology to serve as a liberator and to remake the world wondrously and benignly.

But, there is much to consider. The point, Johnson said, is to consider what is at stake and how we direct these technologies.

At stake is whether we bequeath an Orwellian world, designed for censorship and repression and control, or a world of emancipation, debate, and learning, where technology threatens famine and disease but not our freedoms….

Our joint declaration [the Universal Declaration of Human Rights] upholds freedom of opinion and expression, the privacy of home and correspondence, and the right to seek and impart information and ideas. Unless we ensure that new technology reflects this spirit, I fear that our declaration will mean nothing and no longer hold. So the mission of the United Kingdom and all who share our values must be to ensure that emerging technologies are designed from the outset for freedom, openness, and pluralism, with the right safeguards in place to protect our peoples.

Of course, the rights of private industry and innovators must be balanced with individual freedoms, the right to privacy, and national security. Johnson closed with some prescient admonitions.

We need to find the right balance between freedom and control, between innovation and regulation, between private enterprise and government oversight. We must insist that the ethical judgments inherent in the design of new technology are transparent to all, and we must make our voices heard more loudly in the standards bodies that write the rules. Above all, we need to agree a common set of global principles to shape the norms and standards that will guide the development of emerging technologies.”

Johnson’s speech, punctuated with standard British self-deprecating humor and jabs at France, struck that “right balance” between caution and excitement and served as a counterpoint to the Chicken Little worldview represented by Greta Thunberg and her puppeteers.

Nancy Pelosi announced yesterday that she was opening an impeachment inquiry against President Trump, which is odd to hear since the Democrats have 6 investigations in the House currently which all say that they are investigating supposedly impeachable offenses so I’m not really sure what the difference is since the Democrats have been trying to impeach Trump since the day he won the election. Pelosi made the mistake of saying the quiet part out loud following her caucus meeting yesterday:

This is all very confusing given that the Democrats are saying that Trump violated the constitution and abused his office claiming he did what Biden admits he did here:

For those of you who haven’t been consumed with politics like I have let me explain what is really motivating a lot of this ire toward Trump. Many of the prominent Democrats you see today were also around during the Whitewater scandal, a real estate scandal involving the Clinton that lead to indictments of almost everyone involved, except of course the Clinton’s, though the media will rewrite history when it comes to the impeachment of Bill Clinton, he was impeached for perjury, not because of what he did with Monica Lewinsky, he was impeached because he lied about it. I’m certain many people can look at the Clinton impeachment and draw a lot of correlations to what is happening with Trump, which is understandable because in many ways this is the culmination of Democrat vengeance.

In fact, Nancy Pelosi had choice words for what she considered to be a witch hunt and Presidential harassment in 1998
