The Cost of Innovation: New Cures Are Invaluable

Westlake Legal Group capsules-chemistry-coated-143654-620x413 The Cost of Innovation: New Cures Are Invaluable socialism rationing medicare for all Innovation healthcare Health Care Front Page Stories Allow Media Exception
There was a lot of talk in the recent Democratic debates about healthcare and how to fix our broken system. Unfortunately, but also Unsurprisingly, the Democrat presidential wannabees stuck to staid and vague plans which hinge on government intervention and control.

We should be frank: healthcare is voters’ number one concern and millions of Americans are struggling with high premiums, out of pocket costs and other fees when trying to afford care.

But the Democrats and many recent media reports miss the mark when considering this issue. Take recent headlines about new medicines that have overwhelmingly emphasized the cost of the treatments, without taking into account the long-term economic benefits and the lives saved by these treatments.e

For patients, these cures are invaluable.

Take, for example, a recent drug approved to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Zolgensma. The drug is a medical breakthrough; a cutting-edge, gene-therapy which is administered in one dose to infants and has so far shown to lead to dramatically improved outcomes.

SMA is one of the most common genetic diseases affecting up to 25,000 individuals in the U.S. alone, and among the most serious. Those with severe forms of the disease typically die before they turn two.

For these patients, this drug is a lifesaver. One patient with SMA, who is also an adjunct professor of economics and finance, made this case in STAT News. Nathan Yates explained the factors at play in pricing this drug and why it is a step in the right direction and potential life saver for patients. He explains:

We should not put a price tag on life, though…think about the parents who will no longer have to receive the heartbreaking news that my parents were given 29 years ago: “Your child has spinal muscular atrophy, and there’s nothing we can do. Survival beyond early childhood is unlikely.”

These are families that now have hope for not just an improved quality of life, but life at all. This drug is actually a long-term cost saver, costing less in the single treatment than the multiple years of previously existing treatments.

We see this time and again with new, breakthrough cures. For example, a new treatment for advanced lung cancer was shown to lead to five-year survival rates of 25 percent. While that may not seem significant, prior to this treatment the survival rate was five percent.

These are lives saved. This is the point of medicine.

This perspective was lost in the coverage, likely due to a renewed hyper focus from elected officials to prove to voters that they are serious about addressing healthcare costs.

This enthusiasm to show progress on addressing healthcare costs has led members of all parties to examine radical proposals. From single payer, Medicare-for-all to unelected arbiters setting prices, these proposals threaten patient access to cures as well as the robust, market forces which drives medical innovation in the U.S.

Numerous studies have shown the link between market forces and size and increases in innovation. One paper by MIT economists Daron Acemoglu and Joshua Linn showed just this, when the market for a drug grows, so too does the number of drugs entering that market. This should surprise no one. It’s simple supply and demand.

When healthcare markets adopt socialist policies, however, they reduce the demand via cost controls and rationed care. The end result is that investment into those cures, i.e. supply, is reduced, as well. This would have an immediate chilling effect, not only for U.S. patients but as well for the international medical community. The U.S. “funds about 44 percent of world medical R&D, invests 75 percent of global medical venture capital, and holds the intellectual property rights for most new medicines,” according to the White House Council of Economic Advisers. Reducing investment and innovation in the U.S. will reduce the number of cures for the entire world.

This is why headlines decrying the cost of a treatment miss the full picture. These cures are invaluable to those who will benefit from them, while, from an economic perspective, new cures shove open the door to more research and more cures, further bringing down cost.

Therefore, we must fiercely protect this market and reject policies like Medicare-for-all which will reduce research into new cures. We must think critically about healthcare costs, of course, but without losing sight of the value these cures have and the importance of innovation to future generations.

We engage in medical research to save lives. It’s time we appreciate that we’re making progress on doing just that.

Or, we could just adopt whatever it was that Marianne Williamson was talking about.

Tucker Carlson: There’s a Greater Admissions Scandal at America’s Universities, and It Involves Prominent Democrats

You’ve most likely heard of the bribery/university enrollment controversy involving some of Hollywood’s recognizable faces (here and here). But earlier this week, FNC’s Tucker Carlson observed that the greater admissions scandal involves prominent Democrats.

Against a backdrop of Chris Cuomo working out, Tucker asked how the CNN star — who “can barely speak English” — got into Yale.

“There are nights when Cuomo emits entire paragraphs that mean nothing at all. Just pure gibberish. Like pig latin or dogs barking.”

Who’s Chris? He’s the dude who put down prayer and the prayerful (here). Additionally, he’s the brother of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who signed allowance for the murder of infants just seconds before birth (here) and claimed that America “was never great” (here).

The Fox host pondered:

“Is Chris Cuomo a secret genius? Does he have some amazing talent that’s invisible on TV? Maybe he speaks flawless Urdu? Or has a deep grounding in particle physics? Or can calculate pi to the final digit?. Actually, no — Chris Cuomo can’t do any of that. It turns out that he has an even more impressive qualification: His father was the governor of New York. If you want to get into a top American college, it’s best to have a parent who’s a well-known Democratic politician. That’s the most effective credential of all.”

Tucker’s list of the politically privileged whose offspring all got into exclusive schools included the following:

Bill and Hillary Clinton
Bill de Blasio (“the incompetent mayor of New York City”)
Sen. Michael Bennet
Sen. Amy Klobuchar
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse
Sen. Bob Menendez
Sen. Chuck Schumer
Barack Obama

Subsequently, Tucker fingered the “sham” of earned access among the Democratic elite:

“How does this happen? Because our meritocracy is a sham. It’s fake. They tell you that only the most accomplished students get into these schools. They’re lying. Their friends’ kids get first dibs. Fellow members of their social circle. Kids whose families can help them down the road. The children of sympathetic politicians are an obvious priority for admissions officers. These are the same politicians who funnel many billions in tax dollars to colleges and universities every year. Letting a senator’s kid into Harvard is smart business. The quid quo pro is obvious. It’s a form of unregulated lobbying.”

Interesting point. It reminds me of a response I heard when the Tinseltown admissions story first broke — “Why didn’t they just do like all the other rich and famous parents: make a donation and bribe the school that way?”

With the more conventional method, as noted by the cable king, no one ends up in the slammer:

Remember the varsity blues scandal in California, where a group of socially-anxious soccer moms tried to game college admissions? This is far more corrupt, except nobody’s going to prison for it.”

Tucker sure knows how to get across a message.

Watch him go in the video above.

Payback Time: The Congressional Black Caucus Plays the Race Card Against … AOC and the Justice Democrats

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., makes an objection to a Republican argument as the House Oversight and Reform Committee considers whether to hold Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, 6/12/19. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

The Congressional Black Caucus has just seriously raised the stakes in the escalating war of words between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY).

On Thursday, I wrote about how the freshman Congresswoman all but played the race card against Pelosi during an interview with the Washington Post on Wednesday, but then walked her comments back on the next day. Here’s a brief recap for those who missed it:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) accused Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of repeatedly singling out newly elected women of color in the House, saying that the veteran congresswoman’s criticism has become “outright disrespectful.”

[…]

“When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood,” Ocasio-Cortez told the Post.

“But the persistent singling out … it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful … the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color,” she added.

Less than 12 hours later, AOC said she did not believe Pelosi had racist motivations in targeting the Freshman Four:

To add to the backstory on all of this, Bonchie wrote last night about how Congressional Black Caucus member William Lacy Clay (MO) absolutely blasted AOC over her use of the race card against Pelosi, and also took a swipe at her chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti:

“What a weak argument, because you can’t get your way and because you’re getting pushback you resort to using the race card? Unbelievable. That’s unbelievable to me,” Clay said. “I could care less. I could really care less. I agree with the Speaker. Four people, four votes out of 240 people, who cares.”

[…]

The Missouri Democrat also described Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti and the progressive group Justice Democrats as “juvenile” and “ignorant.”

The Justice Democrats have endorsed a progressive primary challenger against Clay and other centrist Democrats. Chakrabarti last week sent out a tweet comparing centrist Democrats to “new Southern Democrats” that “certainly seem hell bent to do to black and brown people today what the old Southern Democrats did in the 40s.”

“It shows you how ignorant and little history [Chakrabarti] knows, how ignorant he is to American history. How dare he,” Clay said.

In the latest development in this dramatic saga, the Congressional Black Caucus has decided to remind AOC that when it comes to playing the race card, no one can do it better than they can:

Congressional Black Caucus members are furious at Justice Democrats, accusing the outside progressive group aligned with firebrand Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) of trying to oust lawmakers of color, specifically African American lawmakers.

[…]

“It just seems strange that the social Democrats seem to be targeting members of the Congressional Black Caucus, individuals who have stood and fought to make sure that African Americans are included and part of this process,” Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), a senior CBC member, told The Hill.

“I don’t know what that agenda is, but if they want to come after members of the Black Caucus, it’s two ways,” warned Meeks, the Queens Democratic Party boss who clashed with Justice Democrats in a local district attorney race last month.

Indeed, sir. Indeed.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of this outside of the utter schadenfreude many of us are experiencing over seeing Democrats hoist each other by their own petards is the fact that AOC’s Twitter feed has gone silent today. That’s not likely to last, but still – we must be thankful for even the smallest of favors these days…

Netflix Is Already Feeling the Painful Effects of the Streaming Battle that is Being Staged

Westlake Legal Group Untitled-1-18-620x326 Netflix Is Already Feeling the Painful Effects of the Streaming Battle that is Being Staged Television streaming services Popular Culture Netflix Movies Media Marvel Hollywood Front Page Stories Front Page friends Featured Story Featured Post Entertainment Disney

With competition arriving and more entering the market the streaming giant is poised to lose content.

The news is not at all surprising, but the scope and numbers are enough to gain attention. Netflix has enjoyed a long run as the titan in the streaming marketplace, but numerous major media players have been releasing, or announcing, their own services. This has means Netflix is facing two primary challenges: competition for audiences, and the loss of content.

It has been expected that these impending services would be pulling movies and shows from the media giant, and some examples have been taking place for some time. For example, despite being Netflix properties, all of the original Marvel TV shows have been taken off of the library. Disney has no immediate plans to bring those over to its streaming service, which debuts this fall, but the studio has said they will become part of its content in the future. Now two very big properties for Netflix are in the balance.

The announcement was made that the television show “Friends” will end its run on Netflix at the end of 2019. This is because the new streaming service from Warners Media (now owned by AT&T) called HBO Max will be taking the rights to that show. This is a blow for Netflix, as “Friends” stands as the second-most watched program on its platform. But this is only the start of the troubles for the market leader.

Netflix recently announced that it is also losing the top-ranked show in viewership, “The Office”. The rights for that program will be going to the new NBC/Universal streaming service set to arrive soon. All of the players have been readying for such an occurrence. The corporations who are setting up their own services have only been willing to license their programming to Netflix in short term deals in recent years.

These have usually been 1-year agreements, with the expectation of taking over those rights once their services have begun. Warners, the production company behind “Friends” has been waiting for the contract expiration, knowing it will be an audience draw for its new platform. Meanwhile Netflix has paid dearly just to retain those short term deals. The “Friends” contract was estimated to have cost the provider $100 million annually. The deal for “The Office” was just as lucrative.

It was money deemed to be well spent by Netflix, as the outlet has logged viewing minutes in the tens of billions on those two programs in 2018. “The Office” alone accounted for 3% of all of Netflix viewing traffic. But it is not only the top two shows that are at risk of flight. Of the 20 most viewed programs on Netflix, the streaming provider only retains the rights to a handful of those titles. Just considering Disney, this will be a major blow to the Netflix vaults because not only will it involve the classics, Marvel, and Star Wars properties but also all of the 20th Century Fox catalog, which it recently acquired.

Once the major studios all ramp up their services the content will be cast wide in the streaming marketplace. Between the movies they own, and the TV productions as well, the competitors will be forcing Netflix to res\semble something completely different in the next few years.

Early Look at 2020 Senate Races, Part 1: The Northeast

Westlake Legal Group ap-susan-collins-300x200 Early Look at 2020 Senate Races, Part 1: The Northeast Uncategorized Front Page Stories

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine,(AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)

This is the first of four articles in a series looking at the 2020 Senate races by geographical region, starting with the Northeast which, for analysis purposes, this writer has included West Virginia.  There are seven Senate races in this area with five of those seats held by Democrats.  The races will be presented in alphabetical order by state with the incumbent’s (if they are running or if still undecided) approval rating in parentheses (courtesy of Morning Consult) along with their disapproval rating.  For example, if 42% approve and 28% disapprove, it will appear as (42/28).

DELAWARE

Democratic incumbent Chris Coons (52/29) seems destined for another term in the Senate.  Thus far, there are no primary opponents and no Republicans have declared their candidacy.  Delaware holds a late primary, so there is still plenty of time to recruit a GOP challenger.  The problem is that the Republican bench in Delaware is very thin.  Although this writer believes someone will emerge, it will likely be in a losing effort.  The key to Delaware is picking up enough votes in the central part of the state.  The vote turns conservative as one moves further south through the small state.  Even still, the population center is in the north near Wilmington which is staunch Democratic territory.  Prediction: Democrat hold.

MAINE

Like or hate her, Susan Collins (52/39) is the GOP’s best chance at this point to keep this seat in Republican hands.  Collins has not announced her intentions for 2020 yet.  There are some rumors that she will retire from the Senate in anticipation of a gubernatorial run in 2022.  Two Republicans are not waiting- police officer Derek Lavasseur and perennial candidate Max Linn.  On the Democratic side, they believe they have found their prime candidate in state house speaker Sara Gideon who will, at this point, face two lesser known Democrats in the primary.  However, the potential entry of Zack Ringlestein or Congresswoman Chellie Pingree could upset that apple cart.

Should Collins run for reelection, it will be interesting to see how her vote on the Kavanaugh confirmation plays into the equation.  Remember that Collins faced some threats in Maine and at her home in DC which seems to have garnered her some sympathy.  And, of course, there is that elephant in the room- Trump.  Surprisingly, he currently holds a 41% approval rating in Maine which is rather good for a Northeastern state, all things considered.  Prediction:  GOP hold with Collins in a close race.

MASSACHUSETTS

Ed Markey (51/29) is the Democratic incumbent and first won a special election in 2013 to replace John Kerry who became Secretary of State.  He then won the seat outright in 2014 taking 62% of the vote.  He currently faces two primary opponents.  Thus far, two Republicans have declared their candidacy and it isn’t looking good.  First, there is scientist Shiva Ayyadurai whose family left India when he was seven.  This is a Republican candidate who seems to have grabbed the hand lotion and tissues as he read AOC’s Green New Deal and pledged $100 million towards it.  Second, there is Tiffany Williams, a black LGBTQ activist who is news director for an organization called “Crime Tracker.”  With the right set of circumstances and the right candidate, voters will vote Republican.  Remember Scott Brown?  They also have a Republican governor with high approval ratings.  The GOP is not going to get a fire breathing conservative elected in Massachusetts.  In a state where Trump has a 31% approval rating, the chances of any GOP victory here are zilch.  Prediction: Democrat hold.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Perennially, besides perhaps Wisconsin or Iowa, this is one of the toughest states to prognosticate.  Democratic incumbent Jeanne Shaheen (52/31) sports some great approval numbers well above the threshold for reelection (things start to get dicey below 45%).  Thus far, the only Republican who has declared their candidacy is retired Brig. General Daniel Bolduc.  Unlike their neighbor, Massachusetts, there are potential names that could enter the mix if they so choose.  Among them are former Senator Kelly Ayotte, former Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown and William O’Brien, former speaker of the state house.  O’Brien has expressed the most interest.  Trump has a 39% approval rating in the state which could be a potential drag on any Republican candidate, especially given Shaheen’s high approval rating.  One person who would have given her a real run for the money would be current Governor Chris Sununu who enjoys high approval ratings.  However, he has opted for another run for Governor (New Hampshire, like Vermont, holds gubernatorial elections every two years).  Prediction:  Democrat hold in a closer than predicted race.

NEW JERSEY

March 20, 2020 is a big date in the Garden State.  That is the filing deadline for major party candidates and incumbent Democratic senator and presidential wannabe Corey Booker (47/33) is up for reelection.  He cannot appear on the primary ballot for two offices, so his fate as a senator rests on the success of his presidential campaign.  Booker is not really gaining traction on the presidential campaign trail with his thunder being stolen by others, mainly Kamala Harris.  By March 20, it is likely that Booker will fail to win any primaries on the presidential front (unless something seriously changes), he will drop out and run for reelection to the Senate.  Regardless, one Democrat is not waiting- Lisa McCormick, a fire breathing self-described “progressive activist” in the Elizabeth Warren mold.

For the GOP, three candidates have declared their candidacy- Tricia Flanagan, a pro-life, pro-gun conservative, Natalie Rivera (little information), and businessman Hirsch Singh, who seems more concerned with people mispronouncing or misspelling his name at this point.  The point is, at this juncture, none of these candidates have name recognition in the state.  None of them really have political experience (not necessarily a bad thing).  Most importantly, none of them have a chance against Booker.

What should concern Booker is that 33% disapproval rating among New Jersey residents.  The northern part of the state- mainly the NYC suburbs- is the population center of the state and the key to electoral victory.  A Republican does not have to win this area outright to prevail, but they have to have a better-than-history showing to prevail.  The fact is that Booker somewhat struggled the last time out against a relative unknown.  One person who could have seriously challenged Booker was Tom Kean, Jr., the son of a popular former Governor, but he has opted for a House run in 2020.

Note: an open race, should Booker stay in the presidential sweepstakes, would totally alter this analysis.  It would be interesting to see a McCormick versus Flanagan matchup.  Prediction: Booker or no Booker, Democrat hold.

RHODE ISLAND

Democrat Jack Reed (49/27) is up for reelection and running.  He is the more quiet of Rhode Island’s Senators with Sheldon Whitehouse being the grandstander.  Holding one of the latest primaries in the country, there is certainly time for the GOP to find a potential candidate.  Even if they do, this is a state that has gone so far Left there is no reason for optimism here.  The saving grace is that because they have gone so far Left, they have lost population and are expected to lose one of their two House seats after the 2020 Census.  That should count as a GOP victory in Rhode Island in 2020.  Prediction:  Democrat hold.

WEST VIRGINIA

The final entry in this article is West Virginia, one of the strongest pro-Trump states in the country (58% presidential approval).  Republican incumbent Shelley Moore-Capito (48/30) is running for another term.  Paula Jean Swearengin, who challenged Joe Manchin in 2018 running from the far Left, is the only declared Democratic candidate.  Unless someone more moderate enters the race, this should be a GOP victory of landslide proportions.  Richard Ojeda, who ran and lost in the 3rd District midterms, and former West Virginia governor Earl Ray Tomblin are two possibilities.

West Virginia has turned into one of the most reliable GOP states in the country.  They will, however, on occasion select a Democrat.  Current Governor Jim Justice was elected as a Democrat, then changed party affiliations.  Robert Byrd was a long serving Democratic Senator as was David Rockefeller and Joe Manchin, the other Senator, is a Democrat.  So, although Moore-Capito has the leg up here given the propensities in West Virginia and her incumbent status, nothing is a sure thing.  Prediction: GOP hold.

Secretary of the US Department of Labor Alex Acosta has submitted his resignation. Fair or not, this was little short of inevitable.

His role as the federal prosecutor in the the sex trafficking case against Jeffrey Epstein that resulted in a laughable sentence was difficult to defend and his press conference was not a confidence builder.

From what we know at this point a) the Palm Beach District Attorney was hot to trot to prosecute the case until the county sheriff revealed the target was a major Democrat donor, b) a grand jury returned very few charges, c) the Department of Justice headquarters was deeply enmeshed in the case, and d) Acosta appears to be more of a messenger boy than a decision maker. While I don’t think Acosta did a good job at his press conference, I don’t think anyone forced to defend legal decisions negotiated between multiple parties that resulted in a pedophile getting away with it could do much better. Be that as it may, Acosta’s departure is for the best as it, at least, removes the only prominent Republican, other than Trump, involved in the whole episode.

Amazon Tries To Sandbag the New Book On the Kavanaugh Nomination

Westlake Legal Group amazon-620x317 Amazon Tries To Sandbag the New Book On the Kavanaugh Nomination Politics Mollie Hemingway Front Page Stories Featured Story democrats Culture confirmation hearing Carrie Severino Brett Kavanaugh amazon Allow Media Exception

(AP Photo/Mark Lennihan, File)

Last week a book on the Kavanaugh nomination titled Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court authored by The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway and Judicial Crisis Network Policy Director Carrie Severino debuted at #1 on Amazon’s bestseller list. This is a pretty stunning accomplishment for a book from a minor press (full disclosure Regnery Publishing is owned by Salem Media Group which also owns RedState, and I know The Federalist publisher Sean Davis and consider him a friend) by relatively unknown authors.

Since then some amazing things have happened. No one in the media was interested. CBS was offered an exclusive and passed. None of the media that drooled over the fanciful book that alleged Trump had raped a gossip columnist in department store dressing room have shown any interest in the in-depth reporting by Hemingway and Severino. In fact, other than Fox, Hemingway and Severino have not received any interview offers from traditional print and electronic media.

That’s fair enough. The media can book whomever they wish and if they would rather feature an obvious assclown rather than responsible journalists, that’s their call and no one is shocked at their choice.

But there is something else going on. Amazon is trying to step on a book that it is selling. This from Sean Davis:

Amazon is refusing to publish many reviews and ratings of the No. 1 best-selling “Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court,” according to multiple reports from readers who purchased the book directly from Amazon.

The behind-the-scenes dive into the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, which was written by Carrie Severino and The Federalist’s Senior Editor Mollie Hemingway, debuted at No. 1 on Amazon’s list of best-selling books.

The Federalist independently confirmed that many reviews by verified purchasers of “Justice on Trial” were not being published by Amazon. Some fake reviews from non-purchasers and reviews from those who clearly had not read the book, however, were published immediately. As of Wednesday evening, the online retailer had allowed only 16 reviews of the top-selling book to be published.

One reviewer whose critique was published by Amazon accused the authors of “stay[ing] away from using the term rape” regarding unsubstantiated accusations of sexual assault made against Kavanaugh during the confirmation process in 2018. A word search of the Kindle version of the book shows that the term was used 41 times by the authors. Another review, from an individual who did not purchase the book from Amazon, wrote that it was the “[w]orst book ever” and rated the book with one star.

The Seattle-based retail giant has a history of manipulating reviews and ratings for high-profile political books. In 2017, Amazon confirmed that it manually conducted mass deletions of one-star reviews of Hillary Clinton’s book detailing her failed 2016 presidential campaign. According to newsreports at the time, Amazon deleted more than 900 one-star reviews of Clinton’s memoir. After the release of fired former FBI director James Comey’s book last year, Amazon reportedly banned reviews from individuals who hadn’t purchased the book from Amazon.

In a canned statement provided to The Federalist by an Amazon spokesperson, the company said, “Our policy includes a delay before reviews appear on our website while we ensure reviews follow our participation guidelines.” The spokesperson did not explain why troll reviews from commenters whom Amazon hadn’t verified have purchased the book were nonetheless published without delay while reviews from verified purchasers were quarantined and remain hidden.

This is not a “muh private business” issue that the NeverTrumpers always dredge up to defend any attack on conservatives by Big Tech. This is a clear case of a major corporation penalizing a book that it is selling by singling it out for disparate treatment based on its viewpoint. I’m not a lawyer but depriving one book of the baseline promotional opportunities available to literally all other books despite a contractual arrangement with the publisher smells less than legal.

Just like with Google and Facebook and Twitter, let’s not deceive ourselves into thinking that a) these are normal businesses. They aren’t. They are monopolies

Rep. Dan Crenshaw Points Out An Inconvenient Truth About Identity Politics To Nancy Pelosi

This week, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi accused President Trump of being a racist and was herself accused of being a racist by AOC.

Pelosi portrayed the President as a racist over his efforts to include the citizenship question on the 2020 census. Pelosi said, “This is about keeping — you know, ‘Make America’- his hat? Make America White Again. They want to make sure that people — –certain people are counted. It’s really disgraceful and it’s not what our Founders had in mind.”

The next day, AOC accused her of being a racist. She said, “When these comments first started, I kind of thought that she was keeping the progressive flank at more of an arm’s distance in order to protect more moderate members, which I understood. But the persistent singling out … it got to a point where it was just outright disrespectful … the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color.”

What does it mean to label an opponent a racist. It used to describe an individual who believes those of a different race to be inferior.

It’s evolved into a tool frequently used by the left to end, and win, a debate by the claim of higher moral ground. It’s become a knee-jerk reaction among Democrats.

The problem is, through overuse (and abuse), it has lost both its meaning and its power.

I saw an amusing gif about “playing the race card.” It said, “Your race card has been declined. Do you have another form of argument?”

This is what you reap when you play identity politics.

One trait I especially admire about Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) is his ability to quickly separate the wheat from the chaff in political situations. Here’s the message the outspoken, and wise, Congressman sent to Nancy Pelosi on Thursday.

“Madam Speaker, welcome to the true nature of identity politics – where you’re accused of being racist for no reason at all, and where intellectually lazy insults are used against you as a way to replace substantive debate of your argument or idea.”

Enough said.

Democrat Rep Eviscerates AOC and Her Chief of Staff As Their Cold War Goes Hot

The past two days have not been good for relations within the Democrat House. Their caucus, according to reports, has begun rebelling against the loud-mouthed, radical “squad” of new Congressional members, namely Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley. This led to Pelosi giving a private, caucus wide address laying down the law about trashing other members. Some of the tension came from a tweet AOC’s Chief of Staff put out comparing moderate Democrats to southern segregationists.

Almost immediately, AOC was accusing Pelosi of racism for singling her and her cohorts out in the rebuke. I do have to wonder if it really qualifies as being “singled out” when you and your friends are the only ones doing the thing being pointed out? I mean, if I rob a bank and the police arrest me, I can’t complain that they didn’t put bracelets on my innocent neighbor. There’s a way for AOC to stop being singled out, i.e. stop doing ridiculous stuff, but I digress.

Up until this point, the tensions have remained between leadership, i.e. Nancy Pelosi, and the aforementioned squad. Things just changed though as a rank and file Democrat member of the House just blew his stack at AOC and her Nazi sympathizing Chief of Staff.

This per The Hill.

Clay, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, fumed at Ocasio-Cortez and the group of progressive lawmakers that includes Reps. Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.) and Ayanna Pressley (Mass.).

In an interview with The Washington Post on Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez accused Pelosi of singling out newly elected women of color.

That would have been bad enough, but he was just getting warmed up.

“It shows you how weak their argument is when they have to resort and direct racist accusations toward Speaker Pelosi … it’s very disappointing to me,” Clay said.

The Missouri Democrat also described Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti and the progressive group Justice Democrats as “juvenile” and “ignorant.”…

…“It shows you how ignorant and little history [Chakrabarti] knows, how ignorant he is to American history. How dare he,” Clay said.

Inject this directly into my veins.

Clay is also right of course. Saikat Chakrabarti is an absolute clown. Not only that, he’s corrupt and has been implicated in a scheme to funnel campaign cash to his own personal business interests. Like all commies, he’s really just about the money. He’s also a disgusting ideologue who makes incredibly false and misleading statements on a regular basis.

He’d finish up by targeting Justice Democrats, AOC’s support group that she almost certainly illegally coordinated with throughout her 2018 campaign.

“They’re missing the fact that we have a very thin margin of a majority that we’re operating under and apparently it doesn’t matter to Justice Democrats, they just want to get skins. They want to score points for whatever reason. But I find it juvenile, their tactics, I find their ignorance to be beyond belief about American history and about who are really segregationists. And so how dare they try to play the race card at this point, it shows you the weakness of their arguments.”

What’s got Clay so riled is that Justice Democrats is running a primary challenger against him and dozens of other sitting House members in an attempt to turn the Democratic party even further left. Understandably, he feels their tactics are self-defeating and stupid.

There’s another aspect of this that’s interesting, though. That being his reaction to AOC playing the race card and bringing up her lack of understanding of history. You can almost sense that he wants to come out and just say she wouldn’t know real racism if it punched her in the mouth.

The privileged socialist queen from New York who’s been praised and pampered all her life simply cannot compare her experience to black Americans and it’s insulting for her to constantly try to do so by crying racism. AOC has not suffered the systematic, brutal racism that others in this country have and she’s appropriating their struggles to further her political career. There’s something uniquely gross about that and perhaps it’s time for people to stop being scared to point that out.

Regardless, the civil war in the Democrat party is boiling over right now. It’s going to get worse and I’m not sure how it gets solved. AOC will not back down and Pelosi is trying to dance on the head of a needle. It’s not sustainable. More and more members are going to get sick of this and start speaking out.

But hey, I’m ready for it. Pass the popcorn.

LA Police Chief: In an Effort to Fight the City’s Homeless Crisis, Warrants for Homeless People Will Be Canceled

A city worker uses a power washer to clean the sidewalk by a tent city along Division Street Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, in San Francisco. Homeless people have until the end of Friday to vacate a rambling tent city along a busy San Francisco street declared a health hazard by city officials earlier this week. The mayor’s office says about 40 tents remain, down from a high of 140 tents this winter. The tents have lined both sides of a street under a freeway overpass for months, drawing complaints from residents and businesses. (AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

At present time, tons and tons of people are sleeping on LA’s sidewalks and defecating in public.

What’s the solution?

In part, it’s to give them a break concerning warrants for their arrest.

So thinks LA Police Chief Michel Moore, who Wednesday told The Associated Press it’s part of the cure for a major malady of the humanitarian kind:

“This is a humanitarian crisis of our generation. This matches any other calamity that this city or this region or this country has seen. It is, I believe, a social emergency.”

He’s not wrong about it being an emergency; but it’s a problem the city itself created: Allowance is encouragement.

And now, as asserted by Victor Hansen Davis, California is the country’s first Third World state.

Nicely done.

Like a delicious hotcake, in some sectors — notably San Francisco — the Golden State has become golden brown. Just fancy a look at the city’s Poop Map (here). Breakfast, anyone?

Is Michel further feeding the problem by forgiving warrants? What does that accomplish?

As for stats, take a ganders, as reported by the AP:

Homelessness rose 16% in LA over the past year , to more than 36,000 people, according to a June report by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Across LA County, the count increased 12%, to nearly 59,000 people.

California’s homeless crisis came under fire this month after President Donald Trump threatened to intervene and “get that whole thing cleaned up.”

“They can’t be looking at scenes like you see in Los Angeles and San Francisco,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti responded that he would welcome federal involvement to solve the issue.

Garcetti’s an interesting player in the plot of people plopping on public property: There’s currently a petition for a recall to send him’ packin’ (see here).

The leader of that brigade recently sent an S.O.S. message to Trump (here).

Indeed, as voiced to Tucker Carlson, Los Angeles activist Alexandra Datig doesn’t think much of Eric:

“I think we are living in third world conditions that are a threat to public health here in Los Angeles, and we have a mayor who is completely ignorant of that and he is an abysmal failure. … We have this position in the city of Los Angeles where our leaders seem to think that it’s okay to leave people on the street to die, just whistling past the graveyard. We have had over 3600 people dying on the streets of Los Angeles in the past five years.”

Police Chief Michel’s plan — which has been in the works since he assumed his post last year — is to eliminate all bench warrants for offenses such as drinking in public, blocking a sidewalk, and failure to appear in court.

So…permissiveness exacerbated the problem, and now permissiveness will help fix it, it seems.

Whatever the case, Michel needs to wipe clean the docket:

“We have hundreds of thousands of bench warrants that haven’t been served in years. We need to clear the docket.”

And anyway, he prefers “outreach”:

“Where’s our outreach workers, where’s our mental health workers?. I would love to see outreach workers wearing a vest. I would love for the public to be able to drive up and down the street and see outreach workers readily identifiable conducting outreach and engagement to people experiencing homelessness.”

Apparently, if you’ve committed public drunkenness, you’re in trouble. But if you’ve done so and then taken a slam by the curb, the government’s willing to forgive and forget.

And that’s called California.
