A Federal Judge Stops Georgia’s Stringent Abortion Law, and One Senator Must be Saying a Prayer of Thanks

On Tuesday, a federal judge instated a block against Georgia’s fetal heartbeat bill.

The law was set for effect on January 1st, but U.S. District Judge Steve Jones put a temporary hold on it.

As reported by Atlanta’s WSB-TV, Planned Parenthood, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and the American Civil Liberties Union sued the state in June over the legislation.

Except in cases of rape or incest officially reported to police, H.B. 481 bans abortion once a heartbeat is detected.

ACLU of Georgia Legal Director Sean Young told the Daily Caller News Foundation Tuesday’s decision was a triumph for women:

“Today is a tremendous victory for the women of Georgia and for the Constitution. Politicians have no business telling women or couples when to start or expand a family. This case has always been about one thing: letting her decide.”

A spokesperson for Brian Kemp, the Republican governor who signed the bill, said his administration is dedicated to its pro-life position:

“We are currently reviewing Judge Jones’ decision. Despite today’s outcome, we remain confident in our position. We will continue to fight for the unborn and work to ensure that all Georgians have the opportunity to live, grow, and prosper.”

Congressional Democratic Kirsten Gillibrand is surely relieved by the judge’s decision. For her, it’s a downright answer to prayer — in May, the senator told the world being pro-abortion was the duty of every Christian:

“If you are a person of the Christian faith, one of the tenets of our faith is free will. One of the tenets of our democracy is that we have a separation of church and state, and under no circumstances are we supposed to be imposing our faith on other people. And I think [the heartbeat law] is an example of that effort.”

As I pointed out at the time:

I’d like to take a moment and point out that, irrespective of any political issue, that statement made absolutely no logical sense.

In response to this latest judicial turn, Planned Parenthood East’s Barbara Ann Luttrell celebrated on behalf of folks nationwide:

“This is a victory for Georgia and people all across the country. We promise the people we serve and the people across the state to protect access to abortion, and together we have.”

Barbara was down and out just months ago amid a wave of pro-life legislation, lamenting, “We’ve never seen it this bad.”

She shouldn’t get too comfortable — the block is, of course, only temporary.

Nevertheless, Planned Parenthood Southeast CEO Staci Fox also championed the move, reminding America how abortion should be:

“To the countless Georgians who spoke out against this ban and were ignored, we promised to keep fighting every step of the way and we have. … To Governor Kemp, we promised to see you in court, and we did. But most importantly, to our patients, we promised to protect access to safe, legal abortion and together we have.”

“Safe and legal” — as recently as 2008, Hillary Clinton reiterated that abortion should be “safe, legal, and rare.” Democrats seem to be drifting away from that last part.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo, picked to be the next secretary of state, listens during his introductions before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during a confirmation hearing on his nomination to be Secretary of State, Thursday, April 12, 2018 on Capitol Hill in Washington. Pompeo’s remarks will be the first chance for lawmakers and the public to hear directly from the former Kansas congressman about his approach to diplomacy and the role of the State Department, should he be confirmed to lead it. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin) Chairman Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., Ranking Member Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., The Senate Foreign Relations Committee holds Pompeo’s confirmation hearing Thursday.

Late last night, we got word that the State Department Inspector General has called an “urgent” briefing with Congress to share something related to the Ukraine matter. What that something is become a little clearer this morning if we are to believe the anonymous sources.

What exactly is the game here? There’s a lot of different directions to speculate in.

Mike Pompeo, just this week, sent out a letter to Congress warning them that he and his department would not be intimated into cooperation. My colleague streiff wrote about that, which you can read at this link. That letter came after Adam Schiff tried to play tough guy and asserted that any refusal to give him what he wants (even if the law doesn’t require it) would be treated as “obstruction of justice.” Funny enough, Schiff has no power to prosecute anyone on the basis of such fantasies.

While my original thought was that it probably had something to do with Pompeo’s letter, Mollie Hemingway is getting word this is actually old news.

If this is true, it’s evidence of more subversive nonsense being propagated. What makes this “urgent” now if it is four months old? What changed? Nothing as far as I can tell except the Democrats asking for more fodder. Suddenly, they seem to be getting it even though the issue appears to be outdated.

And if you are wondering about the politics of this IG, you probably won’t be surprised to learn he was put in place by Barack Obama. The State Department itself is full of careerists that would much rather be serving under Hillary Clinton right now.

There’s going to be a lot more to come on this later today, as Schiff will undoubtedly leak whatever he tells them almost immediately. At the moment though, it appears another Democrat bureaucrat is trying to rush things out there to feed the narrative against the President. If this issue is truly four months old, there’s absolutely no excuse to present it as urgent now. We’ll see where this all goes.

Surrender: City of San Francisco Suddenly Figures Out They Can’t Win Their Latest War Against the NRA

Last month, streiff wrote about a resolution passed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors that formally declared the NRA a “domestic terrorist organization.”

The resolution was inspired by the mass shooting in Gilroy, CA on July 28th that killed 3 and wounded 17. Though the NRA had nothing to do with the shooting, the Second Amendment-defending organization is a frequent whipping boy for Democrats when mass shootings happen.

They responded to the resolution by suing the city, county and the supervisors on First Amendment grounds:

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against the city and county of San Francisco and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. It accuses city officials of violating the gun lobby’s free speech rights for political reasons and claims the city is trying to blacklist anyone associated with the NRA from doing business there.

A few weeks later, we find out that the city has decided to back down in its war on the group:

Mayor London Breed issued the advisory on Sept. 23, a few weeks after the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution labeling the NRA a “domestic terrorist organization” and calling on the city to take steps to assess possible ties between its contractors and the organization.

In a memo co-written by the city attorney, Breed wrote that the board can only enact new contracting requirements by ordinance. Resolutions have no legal weight.

In a desperate bid to save face, city officials say the NRA misinterpreted what the resolution actually said:

John Cote, spokesman for the city attorney’s office, said the resolution was never intended to change any laws.

“If the NRA thinks this is a win, it’s only because their lawsuit completely distorts what the resolution actually does,” he said.
[…]
[Supervisor Catherine Stefani] said Tuesday that the resolution did not direct the city to assess contracting practices.

Cote and Stefani are both being dishonest (surprise). The resolution clearly states what the objective was:

FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City and County of San Francisco should take every reasonable step to assess the financial and contractual relationships our vendors and contractors have with this domestic terrorist organization; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City and County of San Francisco should take every reasonable step to limit those entities who do business with the City and County of San Francisco from doing business with this domestic terrorist organization; and be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City and County of San Francisco should encourage all other jurisdictions, including other cities, states, and the federal government, to adopt similar positions.

Resolutions are indeed typically more symbolic than binding, but this one was not written like that.

It’s not clear the NRA knew the resolution by its nature was essentially toothless. But what is clear is that any attempt the city makes in the near future to pass an actual ordinance on this matter will likely be met with the same response.

The Hit Parade Against John Solomon

Westlake Legal Group media-bias-620x348 The Hit Parade Against John Solomon Trump Russia collusion media bias Media John Solomon Front Page Stories fake news Censorship Allow Media Exception

To hear investigative journalist John Solomon tell it, he started down the road of investigating the Russia collusion hoax when, like something from a movie, two agents showed up in his driveway and told him to keep pushing on his work covering procedural anomalies he was noticing at the FISA court.

He has, in the years since that motivating event, done arguably some of the best investigative work on what would become one of the biggest stories about political malfeasance this country has seen, writing many of his reports in his column at The Hill.

But that is not what is being printed about him in the impeachment-friendly news media at present who see him as a conspiracy theory peddler with a checkered reporting history — even though these same outlets count him as a contributor.

The Daily Beast has the newest smear, in an opinion piece disguised as a “news” report because it’s ostensibly about how Solomon’s colleagues at the generally progressive-friendly The Hill are filled with anxiety due to his reporting.

The headline itself speaks volumes: “Leaked Memo: Colleagues Unload on John Solomon, the Journo Who Kicked Off Trump’s Ukraine Conspiracy”

Over the past several months, and with the benefit of substantial airtime from Fox News primetime host Sean Hannity, Solomon has peddled a series of Ukraine-based conspiracy theories and allegations that have primarily taken aim at two of Trumpworld’s biggest targets: Biden and Hillary Clinton.

In the process, his questionable reporting, which often seems specifically tailored to stoke the flames of right-wing paranoia, has enraged many of his colleagues at The Hill who have for years seen his tactics and reporting as overtly ideological, convoluted, and often lacking in crucial context.

“He’s a lightning rod of anxiety for us,” one Hill insider told The Daily Beast.

It’s unclear why Solomon’s colleagues disliking him is really much of a news story beyond just office politics and gossip, although The Beast does try to offer weak suggestions that Solomon might have incorrectly sourced or reported elements of his stories.

His response: I include all documents and source material in my stories. Feel free to take a deep dive and catch me foisting bad journalism on you.

But The Beast is not alone in their condemnation. The Washington Post, in the Lifestyle section of all places, gives us a harrowing tale of how Solomon is promoting a tale of corruption involving Joe Biden and his son Hunter that might be “flawed.”

What’s clear is that Solomon — a former Washington Post investigative reporter who later became editor of the conservative Washington Times — has played an important role in advancing a flawed, Trump-friendly tale of corruption in Ukraine, particularly involving Biden and his son Hunter. The younger Biden was a director of a Ukrainian energy company at the time his father, the vice president, was beseeching Ukrainian officials to crack down on corruption.

The problem for The Washington Post, however, is that much of the Biden story is already out there and has been for years.  Furthermore, and you’ll have to read the Post’s piece, they’re using the word of someone who was eventually replaced as a prosecutor by the new president of Ukraine — and who it seems may have been pressured by the State Department — as a way to prove Solomon was incorrect in his reporting. Again, you’ll have to read the WaPo piece and decide for yourselves.

But the effort to go after Solomon as a poor and partisan journalist is not a subtle one. Here are two more recent news pieces:

“How a D.C. News Site Amplified Dubious Ukraine Claims”Foreign Policy

“The Rot On The Hill”The New Republic

Both of those pieces are aimed squarely at The Hill. No wonder Solomon’s colleagues were anxious. They’re reacting to that pressure the way these outlets are hoping Solomon reacts: caving and admitting he was wrong to run afoul of groupthink.

To his credit, Solomon not only is standing by his reporting, he’s also leaving The Hill newsroom and starting his own media company.

Which is the proper move for someone who has done some of the best investigative work we’ve seen since Trump was elected and has been rewarded with contempt.

They’re watching you John Solomon. Let them watch you from afar.

Are We Seeing the End to the Domination of Mainstream Culture by the “Woke” SJW Crowd?

Social justice infected everything from movies and the news media, to corporations and universities. No matter where you turned, you were getting preached to about morals by the last people on Earth who should be telling us what our morals should be.

While many vehemently resisted the nonsensical jabbering of the social justice warriors, the fact is that between the mobs and their media support, many suffered as a result. Hollywood stars, comedians, or even YouTube personalities who stepped out of the “woke” crowd’s arbitrary lines were summarily destroyed by the mob and their new complicit news media.

Drunk on their power, they helped create “cancel culture,” which got so out of hand that even doing something good for sick children prompted reporters to begin looking into your social media past for sins as one Iowa man recently found.

(READ: Iowa “Beer Money” Charity Guy, Carson King, Gets The Last Laugh Despite Media Attempts To Destroy Him)

Among these problems comes the fact that the creativity of many artists had to be silenced in the face of fears that what they create would make the wrong people angry. Think of all the movies, television shows, and comedy specials that we didn’t get to see because artists were too afraid to create honestly. The only thing seemingly allowed to happen was art that promoted the ideas of the social justice crowd.

And then Dave Chapell’s comedy special “Sticks and Stones” happened and something shifted.

Chappell’s standup special was a falling domino that subsequently began the collapse of other dominoes. Other comedians and artists began speaking out here and there. Bill Burr also released a standup special that practically spit in the face of everything the SJW crowd held holy.

Recently, both director Todd Phillips of the upcoming movie Joker, and leftist comedian Bill Maher have openly lashed out at the “woke” crowd.

Phillips’ movie hasn’t even released yet, but it’s already gone through the gauntlet of SJW pearl-clutching with the hard-left claiming that it glorifies incel violence, and that it will cause white men to lash out. Phillips commented that the SJWs have killed comedy.

“Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture,” he said. “There were articles written about why comedies don’t work anymore—I’ll tell you why, because all the f***ing funny guys are like, ‘F**k this shit.”

Fascinatingly, his movie is already approaching a projected $80 million marker for October alone, likely thanks to controversy it caused within the SJW community and the spite many people tend to express whenever the “woke” crowd becomes outraged.

(READ: “Joker” Director Todd Phillips Smacks Social Justice Warriors And Their PC Culture)

Maher was not kind at all in his description of the “woke” crowd and suggested Democrats push them out if they ever want to win an election again.

“They don’t do anything,” said Maher. “They’re pointing at other people who are somehow falling short of their standards, which could have changed three weeks ago. They’re constantly moving the goalposts so they can go, “Gotcha!””

(READ: Leftist Comedian Bill Maher Calls For The Rejection Of Radical Fringe Democrats, Bashes PC Culture)

It was just a few months ago that nobody in the industry would dare say such a thing for fear of the Twitter mob, yet here they are saying it in spite of them. It would seem that, slowly but surely, the people are learning that the SJW crowd is far worse in their bark than they are their bite, and the fear of them is starting to dissipate.

This is only good news, as a rejection of the social justice warrior code of “ethics” would prompt a reawakening of a substantial culture. People will be able to create with far more confidence and not worry about the consequences of breaking some nebulous rules set by people who change the rules all the time.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what’s created.

While it’s still early to say that SJW dominance over the mainstream will disappear to a great extent, we’re currently seeing a building momentum for it, and it’s coming straight from the American people.

While Chappell may have been the pebble to begin the avalanche, the pebble was moved by a populace that was sick of the tyrannical hold the social justice advocates had on our culture. There were many indications, but some of the major ones were obvious.

The increasing popularity of Chick-fil-A in spite of the left’s war against it.

The crashing ratings of leftist cable news networks, preachy Hollywood award shows, and politically injected NFL games.

The embrace of the citizen journalist and commentators and distrust of mainstream journalists.

But the biggest and most in your face clue was the election of Donald Trump in 2016. While many things played a factor in his win against Hillary Clinton, a societal rejection of the social justice warrior culture was definitely among them. It’s the reason he’ll be reelected in 2020, and judging by the Democrat’s desperation to find any way to kick him out of office before the election, I’d say they know it too.

People are continuously showing the mainstream media and its leftist cohorts that we don’t want what they’re selling. Until Chappell, most people within the mainstream media weren’t getting it.

Now they do. Now they’re speaking out.

There’s still a long way to go before many in the mainstream spotlight shake off the shackles and begin creating honestly again, but I can confidently say that we’re on the way now. There’s going to be pushback, outrage, screaming, mob action, and attempts to use cancel culture, but the SJWs greatest weapon is also their greatest weakness.

Every time they act they only hasten the end of their ideology being a mainstream affair, and like a lightbulb, they’ll burn bright before they go out, but rest assured, they’re going out.

And good riddance.

The SJWs have been the largest drag on our culture and caused a massive devolution of society that we’re going to be making up for years to come. Children who have been abused by them through trendy gender theories will be forever scarred with the non-scientific treatments by adults they were unlucky enough to fall under the “protection” of. Corporations are going to have to learn the hard way that obeying the SJW crowd is far more punishing than ignoring them.

It’ll be a lot of repairing damages, but I’d rather do that than continue to see our culture suffer under this asinine rule by what amount to grown children.

Kamala Harris Is Burning Down

Out of all the Democratic candidates, there is perhaps none more inauthentic and grating as Kamala Harris. To be fair, she doesn’t have the shrillness of Hillary Clinton, but she has every other bad quality in spades. She can’t hold a consistent position, she’ll do anything for support, and everything she says sounds like it was focus grouped. None of those things are good descriptors to be attached to one’s campaign.

After being fluffed as the presumptive front runner following the first debate (which I called a sucker’s bet at the time), Tulsi Gabbard kneecapped Harris in the second debate and she has never recovered. Since then, it’s been a steady stream of desperation from her campaign.

Things like this.

These are what you call publicity stunts. Her campaign is hemorrhaging cash, the donors have dried up, and she’s old news to the media.

But now things are getting even worse. Her campaign is literally breaking down.

The upper levels of her campaign staff are being changed up and she’s bringing over people from the Senate side to try to rescue her.

California Sen. Kamala Harris plans to restructure her struggling presidential campaign, sources with knowledge of the staffing plans tell CNN.

The changes represent the clearest sign to date that Harris, who has seen her poll numbers consistently fall over the last three months, feels changes are needed to jumpstart her presidential bid and streamline an operation that one source said has been been bogged down by bureaucratic hurdles.

Harris will elevate Rohini Kosoglu, her Senate chief of staff, and senior adviser Laphonza Butler into senior leadership positions within the campaign, the sources said, splitting responsibilities for the day to day management of the operation.

Here’s the problem though – It’s Kamala Harris.

It’s not her staff that are failing here. They’ve actually run a fairly typical campaign and done well with fundraising and managing of funds. But as Harris has fallen from glory, they’ve been put in a position where they can’t win. No amount of staff shake up is going to save her now. Her campaign is the walking dead at this point.

Harris is the worst kind of Democrat. At least Bernie Sanders is honest about who he is. Harris, on the other hand, will tell you three different things within the course of a day. She grandstands in hearings to try to get media coverage while often beclowning herself in the process. Things like trying to impeach Brett Kavanaugh and begging Twitter to ban Trump are just the latest examples of a campaign built on nothing of substance.

I don’t know who becomes the nominee for the Democrats in 2020. I do know it’s not going to be Harris, and that’s a good thing.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders appeared on Fox News Tuesday to discuss the current impeachment circus and why she thinks there is no “there” there.

Sanders pointed out that not only do the transcripts show there was no quid pro quo, it is very telling that Nancy Pelosi announced her impeachment inquiry before she even had any information.

Every member of the call would report back to this individual. That sounds quite high to me and something that I would be shocked if that was correct. Again, I think that the whistleblower’s complaint at this point is really irrelevant because we have the transcript and we can see there was nothing inappropriate about the call, there was no quid pro quo. The President was acting as he should have. And I think the biggest thing here to look at is the fact that Nancy Pelosi made her impeachment inquiry announcement prior to ever having any information. That should be looked into. That shows, I think, the true nature of what this is. It’s all about politics.

Wishful impeaching?

Bad News for Warren: Mark Zuckerberg Calls Her Policies an Existential Threat

Westlake Legal Group warren Bad News for Warren: Mark Zuckerberg Calls Her Policies an Existential Threat warren Social Media Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story facebook Elizabeth Warren democrats Congress Campaigns 2020 campaign 2020

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been supportive of Democratic candidates in the past and liberal candidates.

But there’s one Democratic candidate who he doesn’t view as a good choice, at least not for Facebook.

According to audio leaked by The Verge, Zuckerberg revealed that the company would probably sue the government, if Warren were to win the presidency and try to break up Facebook. He termed Warren as an “existential” threat.

From Fox News:

“You have someone like Elizabeth Warren thinks that the right answer is to break up the companies … I mean, if she gets elected president then I would bet that we will have a legal challenge, and I would bet that we will win the legal challenge,” Zuckerberg was quoted as saying in two Q&A sessions with Facebook employees during July.

“And does that still suck for us? Yeah. I mean, I don’t want to have a major lawsuit against our own government. I mean, that’s not the position that you want to be in when you’re, you know, I mean … It’s like, we care about our country, and want to work with our government and do good things. But look, at the end of the day, if someone’s going to try to threaten something that existential, you go to the mat and fight.”

Zuckerberg acknowledged that the comments were indeed his and encouraged people to read all his comments on the subject.

Warren has promised to try to break up Big Tech companies if she is elected, including companies like that Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple.

She reiterated that promise after Zuckerberg’s comments about her were revealed.

The problem is that while she’s disturbed about the companies’ control of the tech, she would replace it with the government’s control and dictating rules for social media. Government control would be far worse.

Zuckerberg’s opinion reveals part of the great Democratic divide on Warren.

While she has adherents on the left, those more toward the middle and any remaining Democrats receptive to business and desirous of keeping their own money are very uneasy about her.

Some big donors have even said that if she gets the nomination, they may defect to President Donald Trump.

From CNBC:

In recent weeks, CNBC spoke to several high-dollar Democratic donors and fundraisers in the business community and found that this opinion was becoming widely shared as Warren, an outspoken critic of big banks and corporations, gains momentum against Joe Biden in the 2020 race.

“You’re in a box because you’re a Democrat and you’re thinking, ‘I want to help the party, but she’s going to hurt me, so I’m going to help President Trump,’” said a senior private equity executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity in fear of retribution by party leaders.

That could spell ruin for her campaign and the Democrats.

One of the very many national course corrections President Donald Trump is making – is renegotiating REALLY-bad-for-US global trade deals.

We have been the planet’s largest economy for more than half a century.  Our current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is $19.4 trillion.

And our trade deals – look like we have the purchasing power of a five-year-old with an empty piggy bank.

So Trump renegotiates.

But President Trump has repeatedly assured everyone on the planet:

“The word ‘reciprocal’ is the most important word with Donald Trump when it comes to what the subject….  I want reciprocal. If they’re going to charge us 100 percent for a motorcycle, it should be 100 percent the other way, too….  I’m a free trader. Totally. I’m a fair trader. I’m all kinds of trader, but I want reciprocal.”

Trump wants equal terms with our trading partners.  No more – no less.

Trump isn’t threatening the world with throwing our considerable weight around – to get unfair advantages for US.

That’s what huge companies like Amazon do.

Amazon is an inconceivably huge Big Tech monster (Market Cap: $849 billion).

All by its onesies – it’s almost 0.5%…of the entire US economy.  That is, again, inconceivably huge for one company to be.

Because of Amazon’s hugeness:

Every time Amazon decides to do something – it is given unfair advantages…at the expense of everyone else.

Every time Amazon decides it wants something – it is given unfair advantages…at the expense of everyone else.

It is given these unfair advantages – by feckless, crony governments.

US governments at every level are all exceedingly willing to capitulate and prostrate themselves – so as to best please Master Amazon.

It’s as if they’re all auditioning for Kevin Bacon’s role in a looming remake of Animal House.  (Which is a remake that should never, EVER happen.)

Again: Amazon’s government cronyism – never, ever takes place in a vacuum.

Cronyism has a few winners – and a whole lot of losers.

Amazon’s cronyism – results in more losers than just about any cronyism ever.

Amazon sells…everything currently on offer on Planet Earth.

Thus, government cronyism for Amazon screws…just about everyone else on Planet Earth.

Of course brick-and-mortar retailers – of all sizes – are royally screwed.

So is every online retailer – not named Amazon.

Which of course means every business that attends to those retailers – is also screwed.

Manufacturers, packagers, shippers and many, many more industries’ players – all screwed.

All to help Massive Amazon.  Who needs the help less…than just about any other company on the planet.

When Amazon decided to simultaneously site its second headquarters in two US cities – governments all across our land lined up to screw everyone else besides Amazon.

Amazon’s HQ2 Was a Con, Not a Contest

Amazon HQ2: Magnet for Corruption

Something Is Rotten in Amazon’s Request for HQ2 Proposals

And governments did so – at the expense of…every one of their existing citizens.

It’s like Sanctuary Cities – for Monster Amazon.  Metropolises spending tons of citizen tax money – to entice foreigners to relocate there and displace them.

The Darker Side to Winning the Amazon HQ2 Sweepstakes

With Amazon HQ2, the Losers Are the Winners: Why Economic Development Subsidies Hurt More than They Help

One city that won the Crony Amazon HQ2 Contest – was close-to-DC Arlington, Virginia.

Shocker: Amazon wanting to be close to the DC – the Cronyism Capitol of America.

Shocker: Amazon has already long been priming the DC pump.

Amazon Is Flooding D.C. With Money and Muscle: The Influence Game:

“Since 2012, Amazon has ramped up spending by more than 460 percent.…”

Shocker: It’s working.

Amazon: One of the Biggest of Bigfoot Cronyism-Recipient Lobbyists

Why The Post Office Gives Amazon A $1.46 Subsidy on Each Box

Because cronyism, that’s why.

Think it’s fair to UPS and FedEx – to lose out on all of that Amazon shipping business…because of Government Post Office cronyism?

But the prize on which Amazon has long had its Sauron eye – is the biggest pots of money of all:

Government contracts.

Amazon: Government Has an Ongoing Problem Issuing Monopoly, Crony Contracts

And as we’ve seen since decades before Trump was sworn in as President:

The DC Deep State contains millions of Swamp Creatures.

Trump wants to Drain the Swamp.

DCs Swamp Creatures continue to countermand Trump’s Drain the Swamp mandate.

Top Amazon Boss Privately Advised US Government on Web Portal Worth Billions to Tech Firm

“Amazon executive Anne Rung communicated with a top official at the General Services Administration (GSA) about the approach the government would take to create the new portal, even before the legislation that created it – known to its critics as the ‘Amazon amendment’ – was signed into law late last year.

“Amazon Amendment” – ???

The ‘Amazon Amendment’ Would Effectively Hand Government Purchasing Power Over to Amazon

Well isn’t that special.

That’s Amazon Retail.  How’s Amazon Web Services – Amazon’s cloud computing wing – doing on the government monopoly front?

Quite well, natch.

Amazon Web Services Just Opened a New Cloud for the U.S. Government

Amazon and CIA Ink $600 Million Cloud Deal

Pentagon’s $1 Billion Cloud Deal May Signal New Era in Government Buying:

“The (Amazon) contract caught many industry players by surprise, in part due to the $950 million value and partly because it was awarded without a traditional government procurement. This deal may be a harbinger for how the Defense Department plans to purchase certain technologies moving forward.”

Harbinger indeed….

Uber-Crony Amazon – Is About to Get the Biggest Crony Deal in DC’s Awful History

The Defense Department cloud contract – is worth $10 billion.

And Amazon rigged it – so that they would get the whole thing.

Cronyism: Having Your Ex-Employees Award Government Contracts…:

“…makes it much more likely you’ll get government contracts.”

Meet Deap Ubhi:

“The Obama Administration started a new sub-agency in the DoD – in charge of tech procurement.  And hired thereby was a huge Obama fan by the name of Deap Ubhi.

Where was Ubhi working when the Obama Administration hired him?  Why…Amazon Web Services, natch.

“The DoDs multi-provider contract process – then suddenly became a sole source contract process.

“And the contractor description was rewritten – so that only Amazon Web Services met the specifications….

“When Ubhi was outed for his inside-out Amazon cronyism – he recused himself…from a contract process he had already thoroughly corrupted.

“And two weeks after his recusal – Ubhi quit the DoD…and went back to work for Amazon Web Services.”

But thankfully, Trump’s Swamp draining is starting to bear fruit – and lay bare the Creatures.

Which means less cronyism.

And better government policy.

All of which is bad news for Uber-Crony Amazon.

CIA Long Relied Exclusively on Amazon for Its Cloud Computing. Now It Is Seeking Multiple Providers for a Massive New Contract

The CIA is now looking to do things right.

And the DoD?

Pentagon Pauses $10 Billion Contract That Embroiled Amazon in Controversy:

“The Pentagon is hitting pause on a massive, first-of-its-kind cloud computing contract after President Trump cited critics’ accusations of favoritism toward Amazon.

“Mark Esper, the new defense secretary, is re-examining the project just weeks before the winner was expected to be announced.”

That is excellent news.

For everyone in the United States.

Except for Monster Crony Amazon.

Which is even more good news for everyone else in the United States.

Obama Judge Rules That Discriminating Against Asians on the Basis of Race Is “Very Fine”

On the surface, the case should have been a slam dunk in a society where either fairness or merit were a consideration. Asian students applying to Harvard have an average SAT Score significantly higher than any other group of students, yet they have the lowest admission rate.

According to the Wall Street Journal:

Consider Harvard’s “holistic” admissions review. Applicants are rated on a scale of one to six on academics, extracurricular activities, athletics and highly subjective “personal” criteria. Admissions officers also assign applicants an overall score.

According to Students for Fair Admissions, Asian-Americans boasted higher extracurricular and academic ratings than all other racial groups. They also received higher scores from alumni interviewers. But they were rated disproportionately lower on personal criteria. Only about one in five Asian-Americans in the top 10% of academic performers received a “2” personal rating. Yet blacks and Hispanics with much lower grades and SAT scores received high personal ratings.

Asian-Americans also disproportionately received lower composite scores. Blacks in the top 10% of academic performers were three times more likely than Asian-Americans to receive a “2” overall rating (“1” is the best). A sample of applicant summary sheets disproportionately refer to Asian-Americans as “busy and bright” and “standard strong”—labels that liberals might call micro-aggressions.

So, while Asian applicants were stronger across the board, Harvard came up with a slick way of blackballing them. They created a Potemkin system of holistic admissions and weighted heavily the one part that Harvard could influence, a so-called “personal rating.”

See my previous posts:
Asian Students Sue Harvard For Discrimination
Irony Alert: How Blatant Racial Discrimination Just Might End Affirmative Action

The case made its way into court and yesterday an Obama judge, Allison Burroughs, ruled in favor of Harvard.

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs emphasized the university has a compelling interest in cultivating a diverse campus community, and that Harvard’s practices, though imperfect, are narrowly tailored to achieve its desired end.

“The process would likely benefit from conducting implicit bias trainings for admissions officers, maintaining clear guidelines on the use of race in the admissions process, which were developed during this litigation, and monitoring and making admissions officers aware of any significant race-related statistical disparities in the rating process,” the decision reads. “That being said, the court will not dismantle a very fine admissions program that passes constitutional muster, solely because it could do better.”

This is an interesting case because unlike most affirmative action cases which involve white students vs. minority quotas, this one showcases what happens when the interests of minority groups collide. In this case, the disparity between the standard required for Asian students to matriculate actually places them at a disadvantage even compared to white applicants. The Supreme Court has declared that “disparate impact,” that is, neutral programs and processes which overwhelmingly disadvantage minorities are suspect. Here we have at classic case and the judge basically says, “f*** y’all, you aren’t really members of a minority group.”

This case is almost certainly headed to the Supreme Court. The weak sister of affirmative action cases, Anthony Kennedy, is gone and, statistically speaking, even Iron Woman RBB will not be there. So the line up is looking pretty grim for the forces of racial balkanization.
