New Jersey woman accused of stealing $2G ring, swapping it for a $28G one at Costco

This attempt at a switcheroo didn’t fool the police.

A New Jersey woman was charged with theft this week after allegedly stealing a $2,000 diamond ring from one Costco store and then swapping it for a $28,000 sparkler at another.

Store managers then determined that the ring Kolano gave back was a $2,000 one swiped from a Costco in Wayne earlier in the day, Fox 5 NY reported.

Clifton police tracked Kolano down at her home in Nutley and found the $28,000 ring buried under a dirt fence along the Passaic River.

Boris Johnson’s brother quits Parliament over Brexit impasse as prime minister accuses opposition of ‘cowardly insult to democracy’

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was dealt a new blow when his brother, Jo Johnson, quit Parliament over the ongoing divide over the Brexit impasse.

Jo Johnson announced Thursday morning that he was stepping down from Parliament because he was “torn between family loyalty and the national interest.”

“It’s an unresolved tension & time for others take on my roles as MP & Minister,” he tweeted, saying he was also quitting as an education minister.

Jo Johnson has long opposed leaving the European Union, voting against it in the 2016 referendum campaign. He later said the country should not quit the bloc without a divorce deal – something his brother appears adamant to pass.

His resignation from Parliament came as the prime minister went on the attack Thursday after lawmakers opposed his push for a new election in October and advance his plans to prevent the country from leaving the EU.

The prime minister, who is determined to secure a general election as a way out of Britain’s years-long Brexit impasse, is set to argue in a speech later today that politicians must “go back to the people and give them the opportunity to decide what they want.”

He had asked Parliament Wednesday to back an Oct. 15 election, after lawmakers moved to block his plan to leave the EU on Oct. 31, even if there is no withdrawal agreement to pave the way. But lawmakers turned down his motion.

The prime minister needed the support of two-thirds of the 650 lawmakers in the House of Commons to trigger an election — a total of 434 — but got just 298, with 56 voting ‘no’ and the rest abstaining.

BREXIT CHAOS: ALL YOUR BIGGEST QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

He slammed Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn following the vote, calling the main opposition figure’s refusal to endorse an election a “cowardly insult to democracy.”

Corbyn, in response, said Labour would only vote for an early election if the prospect of a no-deal Brexit was taken off the table.

“Let the bill pass and have Royal Assent and then we can have a general election,” he said.

Labour economy spokesman John McDonnell said the party wanted an election but was still deciding on whether to seek one before the Oct. 31 Brexit deadline or to wait until Parliament had secured a delay to Britain’s departure from the bloc.

“The problem that we have got is that we cannot at the moment have any confidence in Boris Johnson abiding by any commitment or deal that we could construct,” he told the BBC.

BORIS JOHNSON LOSES MAJORITY IN UK PARLIAMENT AFTER MP DEFECTS

Johnson’s failure to secure a quick ballot was the embattled leader’s third Parliamentary defeat in two days. Just six weeks after taking office with a vow to break Britain’s Brexit deadlock — which ensnared and eventually brought down his predecessor, Theresa May — Johnson’s plans to lead the U.K. out of the EU are in turmoil.

Johnson became prime minister in July by promising to complete Brexit and break the impasse that has paralyzed the country’s politics since voters decided in June 2016 to leave the bloc. But he is caught between the EU, which refuses to renegotiate the deal it stuck with May, and a majority of British lawmakers opposed to leaving without an agreement. Most economists, the Associated Press says, believe a no-deal Brexit would cause severe economic disruption and plunge the U.K. into recession.

Opposition lawmakers, supported by rebels in Johnson’s Conservative Party, are attempting to pass a bill that would block a no-deal Brexit on Oct. 31, compelling the prime minister to seek a three-month delay to Britain’s departure if no exit deal has been agreed by late October.

Johnson has accused the opposition of trying to “overturn the biggest democratic vote in our history,” referring to the outcome of the 2016 referendum to leave the EU.

The bill was approved by the House of Commons on Wednesday, but faced trouble in Parliament’s upper chamber, the House of Lords, where pro-Brexit members planned to defeat it by filibustering — talking until time ran out.

But early Thursday, the Lords agreed to allow the bill to pass through the chamber by Friday, allowing it to become law early next week. Johnson plans to suspend Parliament at some point next week until Oct. 14.

The government said Thursday that it will try again next week to trigger an election. Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg says a vote will be held Monday on a motion calling for a snap poll.

With Hurricane Dorian looming, have you checked your survival kit to make sure it has enough CBD oils, IV water and honey to sustain you and your dog?

As Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was urging residents Friday to gear up for a potential Category 4 life-threatening storm, businesses across the Sunshine State are using the #HurricaneDorian hashtag on Instagram as a way to hawk everything from liquid IV’s to children’s dolls.

“Worried about pet anxiety with the #HurricaneDorian on the way? #CBD is a great option to help your #furbabies keep calm,” reads one post.

“Here’s a way to avoid the madness over bottled water during Hurricane prep, get a Hydration IV,” says another.

The posts are appearing amongst warnings about the coming storm, memes and, of course, pictures of dogs with forlorn looks on their faces.

Two of the posts are from businesses based in Florida that sell honey.

“Due to the healing abilities and nutritional value of raw honey it’s a must have in our hurricane kit!” one says.

Another post by a business that sells children’s toys shows a doll with a glum look on its face in front of a screen indicating Dorian’s current location – and sustained wind speeds of 110 mph.

DeSantis says Florida residents looking for specific information regarding ongoing preparations for the storm in their communities should visit floridadisaster.org/info.

Hurricane Dorian nears Category 3 status as forecasters warn Florida of ‘hazardous conditions’ ahead

Dorian is expected to become a major hurricane Friday as forecasters are warning Florida residents that there is an “increasing likelihood” parts of the state will face “a prolonged period of hazardous weather conditions” early next week.

As of early Friday morning, the Category 2 storm – which has maximum sustained winds blowing at 110 mph – was centered about 255 miles east of the Bahamas, moving northwest at 12 mph. It was only about 1 mph away from reaching Category 3 status.

“If it makes landfall as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane, that’s a big deal,” University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy told the Associated Press. “A lot of people are going to be affected. A lot of insurance claims.”

HURRICANE DORIAN’S PATH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The National Hurricane Center on Thursday had bumped up the possible strength of Dorian to a Category 4 storm with sustained winds between 130 and 156 mph off the Florida coast. Hurricane warnings are currently in effect for portions of the Bahamas, while the storm is predicted to slam into the U.S. on Monday somewhere between the Florida Keys and southern Georgia.

“There is an increasing likelihood of a prolonged period of hazardous weather conditions that could last for a couple of days in parts of Florida early next week,” the NHC said Friday.

Officials also are continuing to warn Florida residents that the risk of “life-threatening storm surge” and “devastating hurricane-force winds” along its east coast is increasing, but it’s too early to tell which communities will be hit the hardest.

“Regardless of the exact track of Dorian, heavy rains are expected to occur over portions of the Bahamas, Florida, and elsewhere in the southeastern United States this weekend and into the middle of next week,” the NHC added.

The U.S. Navy on Friday ordered dozens of its warships and aircraft to evacuate two bases in northeast Florida in the Jacksonville area, Fox News confirmed.

No mass evacuations have been ordered yet, but along Florida’s east coast, local governments have already started distributing sandbags, shoppers rushed to stock up on food, plywood and other emergency supplies at supermarkets and hardware stores, and drivers topped off their tanks and filled gasoline cans. Some fuel shortages were reported in the Cape Canaveral area.

Josefine Larrauri, a retired translator, told the Associated Press that she went to a Publix supermarket in Miami only to find empty shelves in the water section.

“I feel helpless because the whole coast is threatened,” she said. “What’s the use of going all the way to Georgia if it can land there?”

Tiffany Miranda of Miami Springs waited well over 30 minutes in line at BJ’s Wholesale Club in Hialeah to buy hurricane supplies. Some 50 vehicles were bumper-to-bumper, waiting to fill up at the store’s 12 gas pumps.

“You never know with these hurricanes. It could be good, it could be bad. You just have to be prepared,” she said.

FORMER CANADIAN PM SAYS SHE IS ‘ROOTING FOR A DIRECT HIT’ OF HURRICANE DORIAN ON MAR-A-LAGO

Jeff Byard, an associate administrator at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, warned that Dorian is likely to “create a lot of havoc with infrastructure, power and roads,” but gave assurances FEMA is prepared to handle it.

“This is going to be a big storm. We’re prepared for a big response,” Byard said.

Satellite images suggest Iranian rocket blew up on launch pad

Iran apparently has now struck out in its attempts to launch a satellite this year.

Images taken from space Thursday appear to show that a rocket exploded at an Iranian space center that was gearing up for a satellite launch, suggesting the Islamic Republic suffered its third failed launch this year alone.

“Whatever happened there, it blew up and you’re looking at the smoldering remains of what used to be there,” David Schmerler, a senior research associate at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, said after analyzing the images.

State media and officials did not immediately acknowledge the incident at the Imam Khomeini Space Center in Iran’s Semnan province, some 150 miles southeast of Iran’s capital, Tehran.

Aerial images of the space center provided to Fox News by Maxar’s WorldView-2 satellite show gray and black plumes of smoke emanating from its launch pad.

In previous days, satellite images had shown officials there repainted the launch pad blue. On Thursday morning, half of that paint apparently had been burned away.

Schmerler said that the images suggest the rocket either exploded during ignition or possibly briefly lifted off before crashing back down on the pad. Water runoff from the pad, likely from trying to extinguish the blaze, could be seen along with a host of vehicles parked nearby.

Iranian satellite launches had been anticipated before the end of the year.

BRITISH NATIONAL JAILED IN IRAN OVER CLAIMS SHE GAVE ‘A LOT OF INTELLIGENCE’ TO ISRAEL

In July, Iran’s Information and Communications Technology Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said that Tehran planned three more launches, two for satellites that do remote-sensing work and another that handles communications.

The Nahid-1 is reportedly the telecommunication satellite, which authorities plan to have in orbit for two-and-a-half months. Nahid in Farsi means “Venus.” The satellite, which had Iran’s first foldable solar panels, was supposed to be in a low orbit around the Earth for some two-and-a-half months.

The semi-official Mehr news agency quoted Jahromi on Aug. 13 as saying that the Nahid-1 was ready to be delivered to Iran’s Defense Ministry, signaling a launch date for the satellite likely loomed. Iran’s National Week of Government, during which Tehran often inaugurates new projects, began Aug. 24.

IRAN’S PRESIDENT WANTS TRUMP TO LIFT SANCTIONS BEFORE ANY POSSIBLE TALKS

Earlier on Thursday, Iran’s Defense Minister Gen. Amir Hatami told the state-run IRNA news agency that the country’s satellite activities were “being done in a transparent way,” responding to AP and other foreign media reporting on activity at the space center.

“Whenever activity and research bear successful results, we will announce the good news,” Hatami said. Iran at times in the past hasn’t acknowledged failed launches.

The apparent attempt to launch the Nahid-1 comes after two failed satellite launches of the Payam and Doosti in January and February. A separate fire at the Imam Khomeini Space Center in February killed three researchers, authorities said at the time.

Over the past decade, Iran has sent several short-lived satellites into orbit and in 2013 launched a monkey into space.

The U.S. alleges such launches defy a U.N. Security Council resolution calling on Iran to undertake no activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

Iran, which long has said it does not seek nuclear weapons, maintains its satellite launches and rocket tests do not have a military component.

US cyberattack brought down Iranian database used to target ships in Persian Gulf: reports

Iran is still feeling the pain after U.S. cyber military forces brought down a database used by its Revolutionary Guard Corps to target ships in the Persian Gulf, hours after the Islamic Republic shot down an American drone, officials say.

The retaliatory cyberattack on June 20 focused on a system that Iran uses to determine which oil tankers and marine traffic it should go after, a senior U.S. official told the New York Times. As of Thursday, Iran has yet to recover all of the data lost in the attack and is trying to restore military communication networks linked to the database, the newspaper added.

President Trump reportedly signed off on the U.S. Cyber Command’s strike though the government has not publicly acknowledged it happened, according to the Washington Post.

“As a matter of policy and for operational security, we do not discuss cyberspace operations, intelligence, or planning,” Elissa Smith, a Pentagon spokeswoman, told the paper in a statement.

A U.S. official who spoke to the Washington Post also noted that the cyberattack was designed to be damaging for Iran – but not to the extent that would further escalate tensions between the two sides.

Despite the attack, Iran has remained active in the Strait of Hormuz, seizing the British oil tanker Stena Impero in mid-July. The previous week, Iran attempted to seize another British oil tanker, but backed off after a British warship approached.

The June 20 strike against the marine traffic system was reported to have been carried out hours after Iran shot down a U.S. Navy RQ-4A Global Hawk drone with an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps surface-to-air missile that was fired from near Goruk, Iran.

Sources told Fox News that the U.S. Cyber Command, in the days after the drone incident, launched an attack targeting the Iranian intelligence and radar installations used to down the drone – but it is not clear if that system is the same as the one used to target ships.

Fox News also learned in June that Iran shut off some of its military radar sites around the time the U.S. was poised to launch retaliatory strikes. It’s not clear if those radar sites were turned off by cyberattacks or if Iran shut them off deliberately in anticipation of them.

The strikes are not the first major operations executed by the U.S. Cyber Command. The agency last year disrupted a Russian entity’s efforts to use Internet trolls to foster discontent among American voters during the 2018 midterm elections, the Washington Post reported.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has fired a deputy whom officials say “completely fabricated” a story last week about being shot by a sniper.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva made the announcement regarding Angel Reinosa on Wednesday, days after his assistant told reporters that the department intended on relieving the 21-year-old of his duties. He said Reinosa no longer worked with the sheriff’s department as of Tuesday night.

He then said he can’t comment on the personnel matter and can’t speculate on the motive for Reinosa’s alleged fabrications.

Law enforcement sources also told NBC Los Angeles that prosecutors are exploring potential criminal charges against Reinosa, ranging from making a false report of an emergency to perjury.

Reinosa, a rookie with the department, had cut holes in his shirt to make it look like he had been shot last Wednesday and was treated for a “bruise” on his shoulder at a hospital following the allegedly made-up incident, Homicide Bureau Capt. Kent Wegener said over the weekend.

SHERIFF’S DEPUTY MADE UP STORY ABOUT BEING SHOT, AUTHORITIES SAY

Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon told reporters the department was “incredibly disappointed” by the case and is launching a criminal investigation into the officer’s false report.

“Things didn’t add up,” Wegener said. “There was no sniper, no shots fired and no gunshot injuries sustained to his shoulder. Completely fabricated.”

The deputy claimed he was shot while walking to his car from the sheriff’s station in Lancaster in northern L.A. County. Reinosa reported that he was shot in the chest but his bulletproof vest deflected the bullet into his shoulder, causing a bruise.

Heavily-armed deputies wearing tactical gear then set up a perimeter and launched a massive search for a suspect in triple-digit temperatures Wednesday but weren’t able to find a suspect.

Wegener said the investigation found no ballistic evidence at the scene and no witnesses said they had heard any shots.

He added that Reinosa hasn’t said why he allegedly did it.

Iran unveils new long-range missile system in latest show of military force

Iran unveiled a new long-range surface-to-air missile system Thursday in its latest demonstration of military power, just two months after its forces shot a U.S. Navy drone out of the sky over the Strait of Hormuz.

The Bavar-373, which Iran claims was built domestically, “can detect… targets or planes at more than 190 miles, lock in at about 155 miles, and destroy it at 124 miles,” Reuters quoted defense minister Amir Hatami as saying.

President Hassan Rouhani described the system as an improvement to the Russian S-300 system, which Moscow delivered to Iran in 2016.

Escaped Georgia inmate wanted in Florida murder case kills himself, police say

An armed, escaped Georgia inmate who was named as the prime suspect in the killing of a Florida man earlier this week turned his gun on himself after officers closed in on him, police said Wednesday.

The Gulf County Sheriff’s Office says Stephen Michael Smith – who was serving a 10-year sentence for robbery when he fled his work detail Aug.15 at the Clayton Transactional Center in Clayton County – was spotted traveling along U.S. Highway 98 in Gulf County late Tuesday night. Officers from the department and the U.S. Marshals Task Force then stopped the vehicle at an intersection to attempt an arrest.

“With the vehicle surrounded by law enforcement, Smith immediately placed a pistol to his head and committed suicide,” the department said in a statement.

California teacher, 24, gunned down ‘for no reason’ while sitting in truck with son, boyfriend, reports say

Police in California are on the hunt Monday for a gunman who they say shot and killed a 24-year-old middle school teacher over the weekend while she was sitting in a truck with her son and boyfriend.

Officers found Nancy Magaña wounded after being called to the scene of a shooting at Delmann Heights Park around 2 a.m. Saturday, the San Bernardino Police Department told the Los Angeles Times. The math teacher and volleyball coach, who family members and officials say started working at Del Vallejo Middle School just weeks ago, was taken to a hospital where she later died of her injuries. A description of the shooter was not immediately available.

“It’s just that somebody walked up to her car and shot her for no reason,” her sister Maria told the San Bernardino Sun. “That’s what makes it hard — there’s no reason.”

Nancy’s 5-year-old son and boyfriend were inside the vehicle at the time of the attack, but were not injured, according to FOX11.

“She didn’t get mad at anyone, she did not have any enemies and this was just a senseless act and it doesn’t make any sense that 30 students in six periods now don’t get to see her,” Maria Magaña said in a separate interview with the station.

Magaña, her boyfriend and son are reported to have visited a local Dave & Buster’s restaurant Friday night before visiting the park later on in the evening.

Maria Magaña told the San Bernardino Sun that her sister became a teacher to give back to the community, and spent her own money to decorate her classroom to welcome students on opening day this year.

“She was her son’s superhero. He thought that nothing could ever hurt her,” she added. “To him, she was the fastest and strongest, and everyone else came second… He always said ‘my mom’ is the No. 1 love of his life.”

The San Bernardino City Unified School District told FOX11 that crisis counselors will be on campus for students Monday.
