Jeffrey Epstein’s private Caribbean island had mysterious safe, former employee claims

An employee who reportedly worked at Jeffrey Epstein’s secluded Caribbean island claims the wealthy financier – who is accused of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls – kept a mysterious safe inside the main residence.

The revelation comes as Little St. James Island in St. Thomas is going under the microscope in the wake of Epstein’s recent arrest. The 66-year-old was known to frequent the lush property in the U.S. Virgin Islands – and the employee, speaking to Bloomberg, suggested that a steel safe inside his office there may have stored more than just cash.

Outside of rare visits by housekeepers, no one – the employee claimed – was allowed to enter the room where that steel safe was said to be located.

Epstein started transforming Little St. James Island after he bought it more than two decades ago — clearing the native vegetation, ringing the property with towering palm trees and planting two massive U.S. flags on either end.

He also built a stone mansion with cream-colored walls and a bright turquoise roof surrounded by several other structures, including the maids’ quarters and a massive, square-shaped white building on one end of the island. Workers there, the Associated Press reports, told each other it was a music room fitted with a grand piano and acoustic walls, whose gold dome flew off during the deadly 2017 hurricane season.

The employee that spoke to Bloomberg said when Epstein would visit the property, he would walk around shirtless in shorts and flip-flops, and had a rule that he should never catch sight of the staff that maintained the place.

Sometimes, the employee added, women would sunbathe topless or in the nude around a pool near the island’s main residence.

Many people who worked for Epstein on the island told The Associated Press this week that they had signed long non-disclosure agreements, and refused to talk. One former employee who declined to be identified said Epstein once had five boats, including a large ferry in which he transported up to 200 workers from St. Thomas to his island every day for construction work.

EPSTEIN WANTS OUT OF JAIL BEFORE TRIAL

The man said he saw a handful of young women when he was on Epstein’s property but he believed they were older than 18.

“When he was there, it was keep to yourself and do your thing,” the man recalled, adding that Epstein paid well and would give away older machinery and surplus including lumber to his employees.

Government documents and ledgers show Little St. James Island was once known as Mingo Cay. In April 1998, a company called L.S.J. LLC bought it for $7.95 million. Additional documents showed that Epstein is the sole member of L.S.J., with his signature reminiscent of an infinity loop.

Epstein later bought neighboring Great St. James Island, which once was popular with locals and tourists for its main attraction, Christmas Cove, a place where you could hang out and order pizza and have it delivered via boat.

“He wasn’t well received,” recalled Spencer Consolvo, a St. Thomas native who runs a tourist shop near a large marina. “People think he’s too rich to be policed properly.”

Locals recalled seeing Jeffery Epstein’s black helicopter flying back and forth from the international airport in St. Thomas to his helipad on Little St. James Island, where he built a cream-colored mansion with a bright turquoise roof surrounded by several other structures including the maids’ quarters and a massive, square-shaped white building on one end of the island that some say is a music room fitted with acoustic walls.

According to public records obtained by the AP, the island was once worth $3 million and owned by a woman who died in a chalet in Switzerland. The island had been divided into parcels and given to three people and was later sold to Epstein.

Federal authorities consider the smaller of the two islands to be Epstein’s primary residence in the United States, a place where at least one alleged victim said in a court affidavit that she participated in an orgy, as well as had sex with Epstein and other people. She said she saw former U.S. President Bill Clinton on the island, but that she never saw him having sex with anyone. A Clinton spokesman has issued a statement saying he never visited there.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The man accused of killing Mackenzie Lueck was formally charged Wednesday, as prosecutors revealed the University of Utah student’s arms were bound behind her back when her body was recovered last week.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said Alooya Ajayi has been charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, obstruction of justice and desecration of a human body. The remains of the 23-year-old student were dug up 80 miles north of Salt Lake City last Wednesday.

“Mackenzie’s arms were bound behind her back by a zip tie and rope,” Gill said. “A five-centimeter hole was located on the left side of her skull with part of her left scalp missing.”

Lueck was last seen alive on June 17 near a park in Salt Lake City, and investigators have said Ajayi was the last person Lueck was communicating with before she vanished.

Gill told reporters Wednesday that a medical examiner determined she had died from blunt force trauma.

A search of Ajayi’s home before his recent arrest uncovered a human bone, charred muscle tissue and part of a scalp with hair on it, Gill said.

Investigators reportedly later traced Ajayi’s cell phone to the area in Logan Canyon where her body was discovered. DNA testing of those remains, Gill said, found them to be consistent with the DNA profile of Lueck.

Ajayi, according to FOX13, is expected to appear before a judge at some point in the next few days.

Texas police find second set of human bones near park outside of Houston

Police in Texas are combing a park outside of Houston on Tuesday after finding human bones at an abandoned property just steps away from where another set of bones had been discovered during the weekend.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced on Twitter that police once again have been called to Moncreif Park in Channelview after a volunteer search group recently “found bones at an abandoned property adjacent to the park.”

Those bones, like the ones found Sunday inside the park, were determined by a medical examiner to have come from a human, he added.

100 years ago: American soldiers who served in World War I competed in ‘Olympic-style’ Inter-Allied Games

Those across the Atlantic still waiting to return home around this time a century ago were participating in the Inter-Allied Games, a unique sporting competition featuring men in uniform from 14 nations going head-to-head in events ranging from swimming to hand-grenade throwing.

“This was really an effort to create some kind of group activity among the Allies that were still present in France to show that they can be important in peace as in war,” Doran Cart, a senior curator at the National World War I Museum and Memorial, told Fox News.

“It wasn’t an Olympic event, but it was an Olympic-style event,” Cart added.

The Museum has shared with Fox News a number of photographs from the competition, centered around a hastily-constructed stadium outside of Paris and lasting from June 22 to July 6, 1919.

Months before the Games took place, the sudden end of World War I caught Allied commanders by surprise, Cart says. American military officials believed the Great War would last longer than it did, and therefore, hadn’t put much thought into figuring out how to get their soldiers home in a timely manner.

The premise of an Inter-Allied Games – first proposed by the Young Men’s Christian Association before the war ended – started to gain traction as a way to keep morale up as troops waited to return to America.

“Their idea was, if you keep people busy…they are not going to have time to get into trouble,” Cart said.

The YMCA, which Cart says provided an “incredible amount of sporting equipment to the men and women in service during the War,” then offered up $100,000 to make the Games a reality.

The organization signed a contract in February 1919 to fund the construction of Pershing Stadium – named after John Pershing, U.S. Army general and commander of the American Expeditionary Forces – outside of Paris.

The contract required the stadium to be built in just three months. But when labor issues threatened its completion, “American engineers and labor troops, in their olive drab uniforms, worked night and day on the stadium along with a force of about 300 French soldiers” in order to get it finished, the Museum said in a summary of the event.

Once built, Pershing Stadium held around 30,000 spectators and enclosed nine acres of fields.

“That the cherished bonds of friendship between France and America, forged anew on the common field of battle, may be tempered and made enduring on the friendly field of sport,” read a bronze plaque placed on the stadium’s Tribune of Honor, a platform where dignitaries sat during the Games.

For just over two weeks in June and July that year, tens of thousands packed Pershing Stadium and other parts of France to witness sporting competition between the Allied forces.

Dale Wayne Quick got the military burial he deserved.

The Korean War veteran – whose obituary said he had “no known survivors” – had hundreds of strangers turn up for his memorial service Monday in Lincoln, Neb., after a funeral home put out a call for help. He died on June 13 at the age of 91.

“Everybody that puts on that uniform sacrifices for us,” Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, who attended himself, told KOLN. “We want to make sure that we don’t leave anybody behind.”

Born on Nov. 20, 1927, Quick “led a simple life, however, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after faithfully serving his country for nearly seven years,” the Roper and Sons Funeral Home announced.

Later on in his obituary, the funeral home said they were “appealing to any and all veterans, veterans’ clubs and organizations and our community to attend Dale’s service to honor an individual who so selflessly served our country.”

His funeral included a flag presentation as a 21-gun salute.

One of those who showed up for his funeral Monday was Barb Dethlefs, Quick’s recent caregiver.

“He became a friend, I’ve really enjoyed taking care of him,” she told KLKN. “He never talked much about his service, but he did tell me that he didn’t like me to touch his feet because he got frostbite sitting in a fox hole.”

Denise McVaugh, a great-niece of his who was also there, told KOLN it was “very heart-touching to see all the people that showed up that didn’t even know him.”

South Africa tells public to be ‘on alert’ after 14 lions escape from Kruger National Park

South African officials are warning the public to “be alert at all times” after a group of more than a dozen lions escaped from one of the country’s biggest game reserves.

Rangers spotted the 14 animals from Kruger National Park roaming Friday around a mine near South Africa’s border with Mozambique, the BBC reported.

“Employees at Foskor Mine and members of the public are hereby advised to be alert at all times,” the Limpopo provincial government posted on Twitter, noting their intent is to capture the lions and release them back into the reserve.

Kruger National Park covers 7,523 square miles of land and according to the BBC, is mostly fenced off. It’s not clear how the lions got loose.

The escape comes just two days after a leopard mauled a 2-year-old boy inside the park.

In that attack, the leopard managed to access an area where staff members lived, officials say.

“The offending animal was found and shot dead to remove the danger of another person falling victim,” read a statement from the park.

“In parks like the KNP predators do interact with tourists and staff and at times it may result in species like leopard getting habituated to people and losing their fear,” the statement said. “The change in natural behavior can then lead to unfortunate incidents such as this.”

Five bodies found on Himalayan mountain where climbing group — including 2 Americans — vanished a week ago

Five bodies were discovered Monday by a search and rescue team looking for several climbers — including two Americans — who vanished on India’s second-highest mountain, an official said.

The bodies likely are some of the eight climbers who disappeared on Nanda Devi last week following an avalanche, Dr. Vijay Kumar Jogdande, a civil administrator in the state of Uttarakhand, told the Associated Press. The team had been trying to ascend an unclimbed and unnamed peak on the mountain’s eastern side, rising 21,250 feet above sea level, when disaster struck.

“There is always a fear that people going for the rescue may get stuck there,” Jogdande said, noting the bodies were spotted by Indian Air Force pilots before the rescue operation was suspended for the day due to heavy snowfall and high winds.

An operation to find the other three mountaineers is set to resume Tuesday, Jogdande added, cautioning the trio may have been buried when an avalanche struck the section of the mountain where they were attempting their ascent. Government officials are currently consulting the Indian army and Indo-Tibetan Border Policy regarding the retrieval of the bodies.

MISSING CLIMBERS IN HIMALAYAS FACE ‘BLEAK’ CHANCE OF SURVIVAL, OFFICIAL SAYS

The missing team, led by British climber Martin Moran, began its ascent of the peak on May 13. It included four Britons, two Americans, an Australian and an Indian liaison officer.

The team had last been in touch with base camp on May 26, according to four members of the expedition, all British nationals, who had remained there, hemmed in by the heavy snowfall, and rescued Sunday.

Amit Chowdhary, a spokesman for the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, said that, when the team at base camp stopped receiving radio updates from the other expedition team, one person went to look for the missing climbers the next day.

“There was a trail of the climbers there and the trail ended in an avalanche. There was evidence of a very large avalanche,” Chowdhary said.

After the team did not return by Friday, authorities began a search that included an Indian Air Force helicopter that was able to trace the climbers’ “last-known location and footmarks,” Jogdande told Reuters.

“Chances of survival are bleak,” he said Sunday.

The route to the Nanda Devi peak begins in the Munsiyari area, about 80 miles from Pithoragarh. Mountaineers traverse on foot about 55 miles from Munsiyari to the Nanda Devi base camp.

Moran’s company posted to Facebook on Sunday it was working with authorities and the British Association of Mountain Guides to “gather information regarding the Nanda Devi East expedition team.”

The statement added the company was  “deeply saddened by the tragic events unfolding” on the mountain. It also revealed the last contact from the group was that “all was well” and a summit bid was made from a camp at around 17,700 feet.

“It is not entirely clear what happened from this point onwards or indeed the timeline of events,” the statement read, in part. “We are pressing for the search area to be widened and continued until such time as firm evidence is found to ascertain the well-being or otherwise of all those in the climbing group.”

Georgia sergeant who served in Army for 21 years is gunned down while investigating robbery

A police sergeant who spent more than two decades in the U.S. Army is being mourned Monday after he was gunned down over the weekend in Georgia while responding to a robbery call.

Sgt. Kelvin Ansari, 50, was shot and killed Saturday in Savannah by a gunman who later died after he himself was shot when he allegedly pointed a gun at responding officers. A procession of officers were reported to have lined the streets in the coastal city on Monday as Ansari was transported from a local hospital to the crime lab of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who are tasked with looking into the death.

“We lost a man who spent a substantial portion of his life protecting the country and protecting the community,” Savannah Police Chief Roy Minter said. “We lost a husband, we lost a father, and we lost a leader.”

Ansari, who spent 21 years in the U.S. Army before joining the Savannah Police Department, was set to mark his 11th anniversary of working there this September, the department said. Throughout his police career, Ansari served as a patrolman and investigator before advancing to the rank of sergeant. He leaves behind a wife and four children.

OFFICERS WHO HAVE DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY IN 2019

The GBI says Ansari was called Saturday to investigate an alleged robbery outside of a barber shop. The gunman, identified as 49-year-old Edward Fuller III, was accused of taking money and items from an individual after striking them with a weapon.

“When officers arrived on scene, they began their investigation into the robbery, but Fuller was thought to have left the area,” the GBI said. “As the officers were continuing that investigation, Fuller was in a vehicle nearby, unknown to the officers.”

Investigators say when Ansari walked near the vehicle, Fuller sprang out and “immediately” started firing, striking him and his colleague.

Responding officers later tracked down Fuller to a shed behind a home in the area. He was hit and wounded by an officer’s gunshot after emerging from the shed and pointing his gun at them, the GBI said.

“Ansari and Fuller both succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased following lifesaving measures,” the agency added. Ansari’s colleague was treated and released.

“Our community owes these men and all those who wear the badge a debt of gratitude,” Mayor Eddie DeLoach said.

A top U.S. Border Patrol official tells Fox News that the immigration situation unfolding in America is “no longer constrained to the border” – forcing other officers to be pulled away from their duties to deal a crisis that is “beyond the breaking point.”

Chief Rodney Scott of the agency’s San Diego sector made the comments on “Fox & Friends” Friday while noting that agents have arrested more than a half a million people at the U.S.-Mexico border so far this year.

“We have had to pull multiple CBP officers away from other duties, which means trade and travel are getting slowed down, it means international flights are going to be slowed down,” he said. “We have pulled in several hundred people across DHS that are literally administrative employees to help feed and care for these people.”

“But we are beyond a breaking point,” Scott added. “And without action from Congress to create a consequence to illegal entry we can’t arrest our way out of this problem.”

Scott also said the number of people that are getting arrested at the border appears to be increasing every day.

“We’ve actually topped over half a million arrests… that’s only in the first several months of this year,” he told ‘Fox & Friends’. “We haven’t seen those types of numbers since 2009 and those were for the entire year, not for just half the year.”

To fix the situation, Scott says “we need to detain people in custody until they get their hearing” while also sending more judges down to the border and “expedite the immigration review process.”

The brother of slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry said Democrats like Rep. Jerry Nadler — who is leading the charge to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt – “turned their back on an American hero” years ago to protect Obama administration official Eric Holder.

Kent Terry’s comments on “Fox & Friends” Friday come as the House is debating whether to hold Barr in contempt over his handling of the Mueller report’s release.

Holder, the last attorney general voted to be held in contempt by the House, was done so for refusing to hand over documents related to the Fast and Furious gun-running scandal, where Justice Department officials tracked thousands of guns smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border but did nothing to stop them.

Brian Terry’s death in 2010 brought that scandal into the national spotlight as two guns tied to it were found at the scene of his murder.

NADLER ONCE SLAMMED HOLDER CONTEMPT VOTE, NOW LEADS CHARGE AGAINST BARR

“They turned their back on an American hero to protect Eric Holder,” Kent Terry told ‘Fox & Friends’, when asked if what is happening to Barr now gave him flashbacks to how lawmakers dealt with Holder. “It’s sickening. It’s just sad that they are dishonoring my brother that way.”

Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, sang a different tune about Holder, tweeting at the time that the campaign against him was a “shameful, politically-motivated GOP vote” and participated in a walkout with more than 100 other Democrats.

‘Fox & Friends’ host Steve Doocy also pointed out the “irony” of the current situation – that Barr is being criticized for not providing an unredacted copy of the Muller report, while Kent Terry is seeking an unredacted version of the Fast and Furious file.

“That’s all I’ve been asking [for] since day one and I’ve been getting a runaround, mostly from the Democratic side than the Republican side,” he said. “You got people like Grassley, Issa, Chaffetz and Gowdy that were hanging in there fighting for my family and going up against these kids on the Democratic side.”

Fox News’ Adam Shaw contributed to this report.
