Biden: I used the word “lynching” about Clinton’s impeachment by accident, or something

Westlake Legal Group biden-1998-lynching Biden: I used the word “lynching” about Clinton’s impeachment by accident, or something The Blog media double standard media bias Lynching Joe Biden impeachment Hypocrisy donald trump Clinton impeachment

Several Democrats had to hit reverse yesterday from their criticism of Donald Trump’s use of the word “lynching” to describe the impeachment push against him. Within hours, research showed that some of the same Democrats stampeding toward microphones to excoriate Trump used the term to describe criticism against other Democrats in the past. That includes, especially, the impeachment of Bill Clinton, as the Washington Post noted late yesterday.

The oddest apology came from Joe Biden, however, who wants everyone to know that, er … he had no idea what this meant when he said it? Just to make this context clear, here was Biden in 1998 describing the Republican “lynching” of Clinton via the constitutional process after Clinton committed perjury and obstruction of justice in a deposition:

BIDEN: It seems to me that the process is being demeaned. And I have great faith in Henry Hyde, but ‘ol Henry better get on the job. Because unless he figures out how to corral this, no matter what happens, even if the president should be impeached, history is going to question whether or not this was just a partisan lynching, or whether or not it was something that in fact met the standard, the very high bar that was set by the founders as to what constituted an impeachable offense.

Does that sound like a word choice in the heat of the moment, or a well-crafted if emotionally charged argument? It was an attempt to play a race card on House Republicans, part of a pattern that Biden has created over the years. Few Republicans will forget Biden’s claim that Mitt Romney would “put y’all back in chains” in 2012’s presidential election. The Boston Globe, not exactly a bastion of conservative thought, ripped Biden for his attempt to play a race card at that time and offered a thought experiment that has turned out to be prescient:

When Vice President Joe Biden warned a Virginia rally of hundreds of African Americans that Republican efforts to loosen bank regulations meant “They’re going to put y’all back in chains,” Stephanie Cutter, Team Obama’s deputy campaign manager, said the president would have “no problem with those comments.”

But imagine if Republican Paul Ryan uttered comments like that. Mitt Romney’s pick for vice president would be pilloried for racial insensitivity — and so would Romney. In the fight for civility and substance over pointless hyperbole, Biden may not be the worst offender. But he’s an offender nonetheless, and he should apologize.

Keep that in mind as we get to Joe’s 22-years-too-late apology. Biden argues that Trump’s use was different because “he chose his words deliberately,” implying that the word “lynching” just flew out of his own mouth on its own volition in 1998:

This is utter nonsense. The video itself shows Biden also deliberately choosing the word “lynching.” He didn’t stumble over it or use it out of context. It was the climax of a series of conditions in his argument to conclude that Republicans were an out-of-control mob that its leadership had failed to “corral” and that a lynching would be the result. It’s impossible to argue that Biden didn’t deliberately craft that argument around the concept of lynching itself, on purpose.

What about the Boston Globe’s thought experiment? The Washington Post’s Amber Phillips fulfills its prophecy this morning, attempting to excuse Democrats’ use of the word while condemning Trump. Why? Phillips’ excuses are (a) “we’re more culturally aware now,” (b) “the media landscape is different from the ’90s,” and (c) … orange man bad:

Trump said it: This is the big one for a few reasons. One is that Trump is president of the United States, so his words carry more weight than those of a member of Congress. He’s also white, and the majority of lynching victims were black. For the most powerful (white) person in the world right now to compare his plight of an impeachment inquiry, where lawmakers are following very real evidence, to the gruesome, death-by-torture mob mentality that claimed the lives of thousands of powerless black men was especially dissonant. It was Trump’s extreme victimhood on display, and it’s possible he truly believes he has been wronged on a par with lynching victims, writes The Fix’s Eugene Scott.

But perhaps the most notable reason Trump’s lynching comments drew a major outcry was because the president no longer gets the benefit of the doubt that he is innocently using offensive language. He has a history of making racially inflammatory and even outright racist statements. Demonizing people of color and stereotyping black communities have been part of his campaign since day one. He also has a well-documented lack of empathy for people who are struggling.

Combine those things, and it’s hard to believe that Trump did not mean to draw a direct contrast between what’s happening to him now and the real lynchings of the 19th and 20th centuries. Especially when one of his top supporters in Congress, Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.), clarified that for Trump, this is “a lynching in every sense of the word.”

These are distinctions, not differences. Biden may not have been president in 1998, but he was the Senate Judiciary chair and a major political figure serving as the president’s proxy on CNN, for crying out loud. The media landscape has changed since the 1990s, but that has diminished CNN as a platform; it had a much more prominent place in the media firmament than after the explosion of online news sources that followed a few years later. The claim that “we’re more culturally aware now” is an absurdly arrogant claim; enlightenment did not jusy drop upon us as a gift from the Class of 2008. Everyone understood what lynching meant in 1998 too, and Biden used it for that reason.

This is nothing but an excuse for using double standards when it comes to Trump. His tweet was dumb and overwrought, yes, but so was the shrieking and hair-pulling that followed, much of which was directly hypocritical — perhaps no more so than with Joe “Put Y’all Back in Chains” Biden.

Netflix is the next big company showing off its woke hypocrisy

Westlake Legal Group Netflix Netflix is the next big company showing off its woke hypocrisy The Blog Netflix NBA Hypocrisy Blizzard Entertainment

Big corporations like the NBA and Blizzard Entertainment have been struggling to square their woke politics at home with their silence on human rights abroad. Video streaming service Netflix is now also on the verge of displaying a very similar kind of hypocrisy.

A few months ago, Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, announced the company might pull its productions out of Georgia because the state had passed a pro-life heartbeat law. Furthermore, he promised Netflix would work with the ACLU to fight the law in court. Here’s the NY Times report from May:

If unchallenged, the law will go into effect in January 2020. Should that happen, Netflix, which has productions in the state including the series “Stranger Things” and “Ozark,” along with the coming film “Holidate,” is suggesting it might consider boycotting, too.

“We have many women working on productions in Georgia, whose rights, along with millions of others, will be severely restricted by this law,” Sarandos said in a statement released Monday, and first reported by Variety. “It’s why we will work with the A.C.L.U. and others to fight it in court. Given the legislation has not yet been implemented, we’ll continue to film there — while also supporting partners and artists who choose not to. Should it ever come into effect, we’d rethink our entire investment in Georgia.”

Today, CNN Business reports that Netflix’s stand on abortion won’t play as well in some of the foreign locations where it is now producing shows. So the question is whether CNN will decide to stay silent on abortion when it does work abroad:

The company has been expanding its global footprint to places like the Middle East, where abortion access is restricted. Eventually, it will have a choice to make: does it apply those values consistently, or risk looking hypocritical? Netflix declined to make Sarandos available for an interview with CNN Business. But some think a strong stance in Georgia could put pressure on the company to apply the same standards globally…

Even as it was putting out the statement about Georgia’s heartbeat law, it announced a new show that would film in Egypt, which outlaws abortion unless a woman’s life is at risk. It also has two original series filmed in Jordan, which severely restricts abortion rights as well.

If the Georgia law eventually goes into effect and Sarandos and Netflix make good on the threat to pull out of the state, the company could open itself up to criticism for staying in regions like the Middle East. How will it draw those lines? Netflix did not respond for a request for comment on that question.

“As we get into Netflix being available around the world, we get into human rights issues,” Hardart said. “Georgia is a microcosm of what will happen around the world.”

The Georgia heartbeat law was set to take effect on January 1, 2020, but a judge has blocked it. That was considered a win by Planned Parenthood and, presumably, by Netflix. But Planned Parenthood isn’t opening abortion clinics in Egypt or Jordan. Netflix is filming shows there. So will the company attempt to pressure those governments as well or is this another case where woke politics stops at the border?

The fact that Netflix’s Sarandos isn’t interested in answer questions about it suggests to me he is probably watching the meltdown at the NBA and Blizzard Entertainment and has decided not to volunteer for the same treatment. But they can’t dodge the question forever. It’s absurd that major companies have to issue what amounts to foreign policy statements now, but that seems like an inevitable outcome when woke politics becomes a corporate focus.

AOC got an expensive haircut, let the Twitter outrage begin

Westlake Legal Group AOC AOC got an expensive haircut, let the Twitter outrage begin Washington The Blog socialism nyc Hypocrisy haircut hair salons D.C. AOC Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

This is one of the sillier stories going around, I’ll be the first to admit that. Nonetheless, it does point to the contradictions in our lives as men and women grapple with something as ordinary as a hair cut.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), the story goes, visited an upscale Washington, D.C. hair salon and paid a pretty penny for a hair cut and lowlights. Lowlights, for the uninformed, are “partial or spot hair coloring in which just a few sections of hair are dyed.” She’s young so I’m assuming she isn’t covering gray, just perking up her regular hair color. It’s the hair coloring process that beefs up the final bill.

Alex Swoyer wrote a piece published in The Washington Times documenting AOC’s visit.

The New York Democrat ventured into Last Tangle Salon on 19th Street Northwest last month and shelled out $80 for a haircut and $180 for lowlights, according to sources familiar with the salon.

A 20% tip would have added $52 to the bill.

Swoyer went at the story from the point of view that socialists – especially politicians – are hypocrites. Socialists demand legislation that aggressively taxes the fruits of our labor yet they live quite well in their own lives. For example, the two most prominent Socialists in Washington, D.C. are Bernie Sanders and his disciple, AOC. Bernie, as we all know now, owns three houses, including a beach house. Swoyer’s piece was a legitimate criticism.

AOC is a twenty-nine years old single woman living in Washington, D.C., a city that is listed as number 5 out of the 10 most expensive cities in America in which to live. Her home city, New York City, is number one on the list so she is used to a high cost of living. Frankly, she may well think she got a good deal in that salon, depending on what she pays in NYC.

The problem with the piece arose when a liberal female writer tweeted about the article. She began with: “this would obvs never be a story about a man”

Valenti went at it from the sexist angle – a woman is criticized for her hair care. What Valenti must have missed in the last 30 years, though, is that men, too, have come under fire for hair cuts that seem crazy expensive. Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Mitt Romney were all faulted for spending a lot on their hair. Rick Perry received notice for his preference of $25.00 hair cuts. And so on.

Nevertheless, AOC is in the public spotlight. People will talk whether she spends $25.00 or $600.00. I find it much more acceptable to question the exorbitant prices paid by the men, though, to be honest because there is so much less work involved. As a rule, women have longer hair (AOC has long hair) and the whole coloring thing takes time and requires a skilled hair stylist. It’s no secret – women pay more.

I’m fiscally conservative. I live for a bargain. That isn’t usually possible when it comes to a visit to a hair salon. I’m sure someone recommended this place to AOC and she went. She probably doesn’t have a lot of time to be searching out the best deal. And, as I noted above, it probably isn’t particularly expensive for the area. She is a single, childless professional woman. She makes a salary of $174,000 a year. She can afford a splurge on her hair. At the most, she might go to the salon once a month, but I doubt it is that frequent. Most women go 6 to 8 weeks to keep up with hair color.

Could she do it all cheaper and live a more modest lifestyle? Yes, of course. She lives in an upscale area. The point is she is free to make her own choices. If we were living in her socialist nirvana, her choices would be severely curtailed. That’s the point the liberal virtue-signaling writer missed.

AOC doesn’t have to color her own hair at home like lots of women do because she can afford to visit a hair salon that can remain in business due in part to tax policies. Thanks, President Trump. That business owner’s taxes would be higher if AOC had her way. The cost of living in a large city like D.C. is higher than a less populated place in another part of the country. This is a time when I will stick up for excercising her freedom of choice in hair care. Now, if she starts having her hair done in a plane on a tarmac like Bill Clinton once famously did, all bets are off.

Yes, AOC has responded. It’s an apples and oranges kind of response, but her response nonetheless.

They fired back at what they called his “xenophobic bigoted remarks” and said it was time for impeachment. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

This is one of the sillier stories of the day, but new rules and all that.

If you recall, Donald Trump was successfully sued by liberals with nothing better to do because he blocked people on Twitter. Eventually a judge decided you now have a constitutional right to not have to log out to view tweets if someone blocks you.

Not all heroes wear capes I guess.

Because the only way to fight back against this insanity is to make Democrats play by their own rules, a lawsuit was filed against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for also blocking people on Twitter.

I’m not going to take the time to dig up my old Twitter arguments on the matter, but the most common rebuttal I got was that AOC can block people because she only represents her district. So it’s (D)ifferent, because it always is, right? That seemed too convenient by half, as she’s still a government figure who makes national policy. Now, a judge apparently agrees and she’s being made to testify.

An aide to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday said the freshman congresswoman blocks people on Twitter if their input isn’t “constructive” — but a federal judge demanded that she come and explain that herself…

…But Brooklyn federal Judge Frederic Block wants to hear directly from the prolific tweeter herself.

“I think she has to testify,” the judge said. “Her point is that this was an A-OK thing to do … she has to explain.”

Hikind said he was blocked by Ocasio-Cortez after he tweeted at her about her controversial comments in June comparing migrant centers at the border to concentration camps.

Look, I think this is ridiculous. Anyone should be able to block who they want on Twitter. But AOC was one of the people who gloated when Trump lost the lawsuit filed against him over blocking people on Twitter, so she better be willing to play by her own rules.

The real issue here is the stupidity of our justice system in the age of Trump. Judges continually torture the law and invent reasons to rule against the President simply for partisan gain. It’s how you can a judge in California have the same ruling overturned twice, finally having to be slapped down by the Supreme Court. There’s no care for normalcy or deference among many Democrat appointed judges anymore. It’s orange man bad all the time.

I’d love to return to a time of sanity on legal matters like this but that doesn’t appear possible right now. In the meantime, the best way to cut back on the nonsense is to hold Democrats to the standards they set.

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

Democratic 2020 candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren sure does like to virtue signal, and this time she may have signaled a virtue that she doesn’t have at all.

Back in June, Warren wrote a Medium post about how ways that the private prison system is horrendous and fair enough. Incarcerating people for profit isn’t exactly something many would consider an American ideal, and I don’t know many people on the left or the right who have defended it.

Fox News gives an excellent rundown of how expensive and horrible private prisons are if you’re curious.

After giving a spiel about her disgust, Warren notes “this is exploitation, plain and simple,” and that private prisons are “profiteering off cruelty.”

But while Warren is busy standing on a soapbox trying to sound like a crusader standing against all that is unjust, looking into her past investments tells us a different story. In fact, it tells us the exact opposite story.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, Warren invested heavily in an organization that was one of the top shareholders in two of the largest private prison corporations in America:

Warren invested in Vanguard Target Retirement 2025—a retirement account run by the Vanguard Group, an investment management company—which in turn invested more than 30 percent of its money in Vanguard’s domestic stock index fund. Vanguard was the top shareholder of Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), and one of the largest of GEO Group, both private prison companies, according to data from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Vanguard owned more than 12 million CCA shares and nearly 9 million GEO Group shares, which were worth roughly $456 million and $216 million, respectively, in March 2013.

CCA, now called CoreCivic, was already the country’s largest owner of private prisons in 2013, according to an annual report. The company owned or controlled more than 50 correctional or detention facilities in the country, “with a total design capacity of approximately 86,000 beds in 20 states and the District of Columbia.” GEO Group is also one of the largest private prison providers in the country with 66 prison facilities across the world as of 2013. The two companies also operate many Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities for illegal immigrants.

If you’re waiting for Warren to explain it, then plan to keep waiting. She was reached out to for comment by the Free Beacon and they never got a response back.

It could be that Warren didn’t know the Vanguard Group was so heavily entrenched with CoreCivic, but it’d be odd that a politician so hell-bent on exposing and eliminating corporate corruption wouldn’t have looked into them. If she didn’t, then she’s not exactly the best person to lead when it comes to fighting the corporations. She can’t even keep her own investments straight in keeping with her supposed “morals.”

This either hypocrisy or negligence. Which one is it, Warren?

In the “you can’t make this up” file today, here’s an example of the incredible hypocrisy being shown by Democrats and the media over this Trump-Ukraine flap.

The transcript of the call is out and it’s a giant nothing burger. We are left arguing strained supposition about what Trump might have meant. In other words, just another day in the Trump era.

But now, a letter has been brought to the forefront that shows Democrats pressured Ukraine in 2018 to investigate Trump as part of the Mueller fiasco.

Hang on a second.

Westlake Legal Group giphy LOL: Letter Shows Senate Democrats Pressured Ukraine to Investigate Trump in 2018 Ukraine Trump Investigation Senate Democrats Politics Paul Manafort Mueller report media bias letter Hypocrisy Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Election donald trump democrats 2020

Here’s the part of the letter in question (which you can read in full here).

Westlake Legal Group Screen-Shot-2019-09-25-at-11.28.33-AM-620x230 LOL: Letter Shows Senate Democrats Pressured Ukraine to Investigate Trump in 2018 Ukraine Trump Investigation Senate Democrats Politics Paul Manafort Mueller report media bias letter Hypocrisy Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Election donald trump democrats 2020

This is exactly the same thing Democrats are wanting to impeach Trump over. These are partisan, Senate Democrats writing Ukraine to implore them to open investigations into Trump and his associates. Right now, Pelosi is backing impeachment over the idea that Trump asked Ukraine to investigate a political opponent. Last I checked, Trump is a political opponent.

To be clear, they aren’t asking for cooperation with the Mueller farce. They want Ukraine to re-open their own domestic investigations into Trump and Paul Manafort.

The hypocrisy here is just too much. We’ve been told all week that it’s treason to solicit an investigation of a foreign actor. Yet, here are Democrats, in writing, doing exactly that, explicitly.

Sure, some hacks will spin and claim “well, they had legitimate reasons to request this.” No more legitimate than Biden being on tape bragging about extorting the firing of a prosecutor looking at his son. If reasonable suspicion is all that matters, there’s plenty to support what Trump asked of the Ukrainian President.

It’s either all bad or none of it is bad. Or perhaps none of it is necessarily good, but it’s also not nearly as big of a deal as it’s being made out to be? Regardless, what we won’t be doing is playing by two different sets of rules. That’s just not how this is going to work.

This is almost too good. Predictable, but still satisfying.

For most of today, we’ve been inundated with impeachment fever among Democrats, the media, and some anti-Trump Republicans. This despite the fact that there was no evidence Trump did anything illegal or untoward in a phone call between he and the new Ukrainian president. We already know there was no threat or quid pro quo involving military aid or otherwise, but after this weekend’s hysteria, there was apparently no walking the story back.

Then something hilarious happened. As my colleague streiff reported earlier, Trump called their bluff.

The fact that the transcript will be unredacted leads one to anticipate that it is probably going to be innocuous and completely open to whatever interpretation you wish to make of it. If that is the case, this has been a epic troll of the Democrats.

Guess how Democrats and the media responded to getting what they had been demanding for days?

Excuse me while I go pass out from laughing so much….Ok, I’m back.

Now, all the sudden, they don’t want the call. The call that they’ve said forms the basis for impeachment, that proves Trump committed a criminal, corrupt act, is not longer relevant to them. You know what this means? There’s nothing worthwhile on the call.

So what’s next? Well, the goalposts must be moved of course.

I’m not going to lie. I’m actually enjoying this. Watching these people squirm after they got out over their skis again is incredibly entertaining. The media are rushing to save this story based on more supposition, but I don’t think it’s going to work.

Unless there’s a bombshell waiting on that transcript, this is going to backfire so spectacularly. And if there were a bombshell on the transcript, Trump wouldn’t be releasing it this soon. For all the talk of him being a political idiot, he may be on the verge of pulling off one of the greatest trolls in political history.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Just Put Another Bullet Into the Latest Trump “Scandal”

Just how much can a story targeting Donald Trump implode? Apparently, this much.

If you are short on background, on Wednesday of last week, a story broke that a “whistle-blower” had filed a complaint against President Trump. The assertion was that Trump had threatened Ukraine’s newly elected president on a phone call over investigating Joe Biden. The threat supposedly involved $250 million in military aid. After a day of full blown meltdowns on the left and in the media, the impeachment train was stopped in its tracks when it was revealed Trump had in fact not threatened Ukraine, nor offered any kind of quid pro quo.

In the end, we are left with Biden admitting to extorting Ukraine on tape and Trump simply asking if it could be looked into. Worst scandal ever.

Now, Ukraine’s foreign minister, who has read the read out of the call, just dumped even more cold water on this story.

“I know what the conversation was about and I think there was no pressure,” Prystaiko told Hromadske. “There was talk, conversations are different, leaders have the right to discuss any problems that exist. This conversation was long, friendly, and it touched on many questions, sometimes requiring serious answers.”

This is correct. Whether Democrats and the media want to admit it or not, presidents talk to foreign leaders. They inquire on many different things and it would certainly be in bounds to ask why a former VP is on tape admitting he extorted Ukraine’s former administration. There was no promise made or pressure applied here. How do I know? Because no investigation happened and the money ended up being released anyway. We are once again left arguing hypothetical nonsense, much like during the Mueller probe.

The real story here continues to be Biden bragging on camera that he extorted Ukraine’s former administration. There was no reason for Biden do what he did from a foreign policy standpoint and even if there were, the former VP knew about the grave conflicts of interests. We already know he lied about having discussed his son’s employment in Ukraine. We know the Obama administration warned him. Yet, he threatened Ukraine anyway until they fired a prosecutor who was targeting his son. That stinks to high heaven and deserves a real investigation.

We were told for years after Trump was elected that investigations are good. That the subjects of them should be thankful for their coming exoneration. Why is this any different? Why isn’t Mitt Romney demanding a probe into Biden’s actions? Why is it that investigations are only good and proper when they target Trump? Why is Biden allowed to obfuscate and dictate to the press on this matter?

None of this lost on Republican voters and they see the game is rigged.

Mitt Romney Comments on the Trump-Ukraine Story and It’s Exactly What You’d Expect

Westlake Legal Group Mitt-Romney-Real-MR-Please-Stand-Up Mitt Romney Comments on the Trump-Ukraine Story and It’s Exactly What You’d Expect Virtue Signals Ukraine quid pro quo Politics Obama Mitt Romney Joe Biden Hypocrisy hunter biden Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story donald trump corruption

After a weekend of disappointment for Democrats, media members, and some conservatives alike, we were still missing one man’s opinion on the matter of Trump asking Ukraine’s new president to look into possible corruption by Joe Biden.

No worries though, because Mitt Romney has finally weighed in and it’s everything you’d expect it to be.

Keep in mind, this was sent out yesterday afternoon, well over a day after we learned there was no quid pro quo and that Trump did not attempt to pressure Ukraine to do anything. All the impeachment fever had already been shown to be ludicrous (again), so what does Romney do? He strolls in, puts on his virtue signaling pants, and lets know how troubling it would be if Trump even asked Ukraine to investigate.

Why is it troubling? Well, I’m not really sure. If Joe Biden did what he bragged about on video, there is indeed plenty of probable cause to suggest an investigation be done by Ukraine. That seems to be a perfectly reasonable request of an ally. It’s also a much lesser version of what we were assured was above board in 2016, when the Obama administration leaned on a foreign spy and the United Kingdom’s intel apparatus to investigate Trump.

On that note, you know what tweet Romney has never sent out? He’s never condemned the Obama administration for their witch hunt against Trump, who was also political rival at the time. Never has Romney feigned indignation at Hillary Clinton hiring Fusion GPS to mine Russian sources for opposition research. In fact, I can’t recall Romney even questioning those happenings and at least wanting more answers. To the contrary, most of his comments involving those issues have been qualified “if true” slams against Trump, even as they indeed turned out to be mostly not true.

I’m all for a big tent as a political party, but Mitt Romney is just terrible. This is a guy who once proudly stumped for abortion and helped push government funded healthcare. He’s currently entertaining a carbon tax like he’s Bernie Sanders or something. He’s Jeff Flake with more self-righteousness and perhaps that’d be passable if Romney at least pointed his indignation at Democrats sometimes as well. But no, like many anti-Trump apparatchiks, he can only ever seem to point his ire at his own side. That act got old a long time ago. If Romney thinks this is path back to glory within the Republican party, he’s sadly mistaken.
