Maduro’s top confidant tried to sneak Hezbollah into Venezuela, made deals with drug lords, became rich as nation struggled

Venezuela’s ex-vice president and now the top confidant of Nicolas Maduro is said to have tried sneaking in Hezbollah militants into his country, made a business deal with a drug lord and became extremely wealthy as the once-rich country turned into an economic basket case.

Tareck El Aissami has emerged as a hardliner of Maduro’s socialist regime as the country remains on the brink of an all-out civil war due to economic misery.

Protesters and military forces clashed this week after opposition leader Juan Guaido openly called for a military uprising, saying the “the moment is now.”

“The armed forces have taken the right decision,” Guaido said. “With the support of the Venezuelan people and the backing of our constitution, they are on the right side of history.”

VENEZUELA SEES SECOND DAY OF UNREST AS GUAIDÓ SEEKS POWER

But El Aissami, while not having the same scrutiny as Maduro, has long been the subject of various investigations both at home and in the U.S. over the way he wielded his political power to get wealthy and support terror groups.

According to a dossier compiled by Venezuelan agents and obtained by the New York Times, El Aissami and his father, Carlos Zaidan El Aissami, allegedly recruited members of the Hezbollah terror group to help with spying and drug trafficking operations in the region.

Hezbollah is a Lebanon-based group, designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government, which has since expanded its operations across the world and has been involved in drug trafficking in Latin America.

The dossier claims that El Aissami and his father tried to bring the Hezbollah members into Venezuela “with the aim of expanding intelligence networks throughout Latin America and at the same time working in drug trafficking.”

El Aissami, in particular, tried to use his political power to sort out their documentation and allow them to reside in the country. The dossier didn’t acknowledge whether the plans succeeded, the Times reported.

GUNFIRE HEARD NEAR VENEZUELA-COLOMBIA BORDER AS REFUGEES FLEE POLITICAL CRISIS

The former vice president, currently serving as Maduro’s industry minister, also reportedly got involved with the organized crime groups.

The intelligence report stays that El Aissami’s brother made a deal with Walid Makled, Venezuela’s most infamous drug lord, and held about $45 million in Swiss banks accounts, according to the Times.

American prosecutors argue that El Aissami played a role in the drug trafficking, accusing him of using his office to aid international drug traffickers, according to charges unsealed in March.

He was charged with violating the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act and U.S. Treasury Department sanctions. Authorities say he also supervised or partly owned narcotics shipments that weighted over a ton, and even managed the global network of companies in a bid to launder money.

All such dealings made El Aissami a particularly wealthy individual in Venezuela, even as the country was struggling economically, with NGOs working to provide humanitarian aid to the starving population.

The report says El Aissami used a frontman to avoid U.S. sanctions and bought an American bank, parts of a construction company, a stake in a mall in Panama, and multiple Venezuelan real estate projects.

The situation in Venezuelan remains fragile as Guaido remains a recognized leader of the country despite Maduro clinging to power through repression.

The socialist authoritarian recently said that the rebellion was crushed, a claim Guaido says is far from the truth.

“If the regime thought we had reached maximum pressure, they cannot even imagine,” Guaidó told supporters on Wednesday, according to Reuters. “We have to remain in the streets.”

An investment fund backed by Hunter Biden, son of 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden, invested in a surveillance system used to spy on Muslims in China, a new report claims.

The former vice president has been facing scrutiny over his son’s business dealings in Ukraine and other countries, with reports focusing on Hunter Biden’s role in the Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.

The company employed the younger Biden as a board member as the U.S. and the Obama administration were mulling a course of action amid Russia’s invasion in Eastern Ukraine. Biden also apparently threatened the Ukrainian president to fire a prosecutor who happens to have been investigating corruption of Burisma.

But Hunter’s investments go farther to the east, drawing scrutiny over his involvement in China amid a controversy over his father’s dismissive comments on the campaign trail about the potential threats China poses to the U.S.

According to the Intercept, Hunter’s investment company in China, known as Bohai Harvest RST, invested in Face++, a mobile phone app built by the Chinese government to introduce a mass surveillance state and spy on its citizens.

The application has been used to spy on Muslims in China’s western province of Xinjiang, where an estimated 1 million Muslims are held in “re-education” camps, providing authorities access to data that shows personal information such as their religious activity, blood type and usage of utilities.

The U.S. government on Friday criticized China’s mass detention of Muslims.

“The (Chinese) Communist Party is using the security forces for mass imprisonment of Chinese Muslims in concentration camps,” Randall Schriver, who leads Asia policy at the U.S. Defense Department, said during a briefing, according to Reuters. He added that the number of detained Muslims could be “closer to 3 million citizens.”

CHINA’S ‘VAST, SECRET SYSTEM’ OF AI REPORTEDLY TRACKS AND CONTROLS UIGHURS, A LARGELY MUSLIM MINORITY

The company also consists of a network of other funds that make other investments, making Hunter Biden an influential businessman in China, according to the outlet, which somewhat explains Bohai Harvest’s dependence on an international subsidiary of the state-owned Bank of China to finance its investments.

The revelation comes as Biden caught flak on the campaign trail after expressing lack of concern over China as a global competitor to the U.S. and mocked those taking the Chinese threat seriously at a rally on Wednesday.

“China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man!” Biden exclaimed. “The fact that they have this great division between the China Sea and the mountains in the East — I mean in the West. They can’t figure out how they’re going to deal with the corruption that exists within the system. They’re not bad folks, folks. But guess what, they’re not competition for us.”

Reacting to those remarks, President Trump said Biden was among many politicians who were  “naïve” regarding China.

“For somebody to be so naive, and say China’s not a problem – if Biden actually said that, that’s a very dumb statement,” Trump said.

The Tennessee Democrat who ate Kentucky Fried Chicken as a jab at Attorney General Bill Barr for skipping a Congressional hearing has been blasted by “Fox Nation” personalities Diamond and Silk as “racially insensitive.”

Rep. Steve Cohen grabbed headlines Thursday after appearing on Capitol Hill with a bucket of fried chicken and a ceramic chicken statue on Thursday to mock Barr for being “too chicken” after the attorney general did not appear for his scheduled hearing before the House Judiciary Committee.

“I want you all to understand the reason why the attorney general is experiencing all of this slander is because the Democrats are afraid,” Diamond said.

“They are getting caught up in the shenanigans who orchestrated and masterminded this Russia witch-hunt hoax. And once that comes out, I mean, it’s going to blow up in their faces. So what they are going to try to do, they are going to try to smear him. They smear him because they fear him.”

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked a top Democratic lawmaker whether he and his colleagues are considering putting Attorney General Bill Barr into jail if he refuses to comply with subpoenas.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries was quizzed by the veteran host about possible jail time for the attorney general during an interview following Barr’s decision to skip a House hearing on Thursday, prompting House Judiciary chair Jerry Nadler to threaten him with a subpoena.

“If Nadler moves forward and your leadership moves forward with contempt, and they still refuse to comply, what do you do next, how do you get this thing moving?” Blitzer asked.

“Do you impose fines, do you suggest maybe even as some have said jail time for the Attorney General of the United States?”

NADLER SLAMS BARR’S DECISION TO SKIP HOUSE HEARING, THREATENS CONTEMPT CITATION: ‘HE IS TERRIFIED’

The New York Democrat said that while he and his colleagues are considering holding Barr in contempt of Congress, no one is seriously thinking about to jailing the top law enforcement official in the country.

“We have to make sure that we do not allow this administration to move us away from our Democratic Republic and to speed towards a dictatorship because we have an individual sitting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue who clearly has done authoritarian tendencies,” he said.

“Jail time is not something that I believe is being seriously contemplated,” Jeffries later added.

Yet while Democrats remain unconvinced of pursuing a strategy of arresting political foes, former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich believes Democrats ought to do exactly that.

“There’s an old precedent in this country under the Constitution of the United States that says that the House and the Senate, each chamber, has an inherent power to compel a witness to testify if that witness just refuses,” he told MSNBC’s Yasmin Vossoughian.

Vossoughian did little to press Reich about his comments advocating for the arrest of Barr, a move that would send shockwaves through the American political system. In fact, during the same show, she also openly asked a Democrat lawmaker how do “we” respond to Barr.

“You’re bringing up a really good point here. Because one of the, I think, directives here, and the big question here is, do we pursue the Attorney General until he provides testimony for the House?” she asked.

A former assistant secretary of state for President George W. Bush slammed Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden for dismissing the threat of China, saying the former vice president has been on the wrong side of foreign policy issues for the last four decades.

“On a personal level is he a friendly guy, but he has empirically had poor judgment particularly on foreign policy.. the examples are numerous,” Robert Charles said Friday on “Fox and Friends.”

“Interestingly, Robert Gates in his book who criticizes almost nobody … noted that ‘Joe Biden has been wrong on almost every foreign policy and national security issue for the last four decades.’”

The bankrupt construction company that built the deadly Florida International University Bridge, leading to the deaths of six people, would pay up to $42 million to victims and their families in a tentative deal with insurers.

Magnum Construction Management made a deal with the insurance companies following a year of complex litigation involving survivors of the six victims who died in the collapse on March 15, 2018, as well as eight injured survivors.

According to the South Florida Business Journal, the settlement was filed Tuesday in federal bankruptcy court and still requires a judge’s approval. The company itself filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

“I hope this is the first major step in getting closure for these families that desperately need it,” attorney Alan Goldfarb, representing the family of Alexa Duran, a student who died after the bridge collapse, told the Miami Herald. “It’s terrible what they are going through. The court case has become a second punishment.”

The probe into the exact causes of the collapse remains active, while a report released in November said there were design flaws that overestimated the strength of a critical section in the bridge. Cracks were documented in the weeks before the collapse, but investigators have not blamed those errors for the collapse.

In addition, according to the Herald, the construction company built the bridge but didn’t design it. The construction mistakes don’t appear to be responsible for the deadly collapse.

Wildlife officials are offering up to $10,000 to solve the mystery of who killed at least seven bald eagles and one great horned owl in Maryland with an illegal poisonous substance.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that six of the eagles and the owl died March 1.

About a month later, on April 3, another eagle died, while two others were sickened and are currently being treated, in stable condition. The eagles had been feeding on the carcass of a red fox.

Wildlife officials are offering up to $10,000 to solve the mystery of how seven bald eagles and one great horned owl died in Maryland. (Reuters)<br data-cke-eol=”1″>

The authorities suspect the incidents are related to a deliberate effort to poison “nuisance animals” such as raccoons or foxes.

“It is suspected that these events are related as a result of unknown persons placing baits laced with carbofuran, one of the most toxic carbamate pesticides, in fields, along woods lines and even directly into fox dens,” officials said.

“Carbofuran, sold under the trade name Furadan, is known to be particularly toxic to birds,” the statement added.

But authorities also say that the killing of the birds probably wasn’t part of the plan by whoever placed the traps.

“Eagles probably are not the primary target of the poisoning,” officials said. “However, Furadan is so toxic that the eagles are secondarily poisoned after feeding on the poisoned primary target.”

Even though bald eagles are no longer considered endangered, the wildlife authorities say the birds are still federally protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.

“The USFWS is offering a reward of up to $10,000 to eligible individuals for information that furthers this investigation,” the officials said.

A funeral was held this week for a Korean War veteran nearly 70 years following his death in a prisoner-of-war camp after he was captured during the war.

The family of U.S. Army Sgt. Frank J. Suliman was able to hold funeral services in New Jersey on Tuesday after his remains were retrieved by the U.S. government as part of President Trump’s agreement with North Korea that provided 55 boxes containing the remains of 55 American soldiers who were missing in action.

The soldier’s two sisters, who are the only surviving members of his family, said they learned earlier this year that their brother’s remains were identified by the authorities and they were thankful he could finally receive a proper burial.

“The last thing I received from him was a letter and the ending of it was, ‘I’ll be home for Christmas.’ And he came home. Not the way he expected. But anyway, he’s home,” says Suliman’s sister, Olga Anderson, told News 12 New Jersey.

Suliman died in the war when he was just 21 years old after he was captured by enemy forces and held captive.

He was a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, fighting against members of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Forces in North Korea, according to a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency statement.

On Dec. 1, 1950, a convoy of trucks Suliman was riding in was stopped and the soldiers were told to flee the vehicles and start walking.

But others soon reported that Suliman was captured and taken to the Chinese People’s Volunteer Forces prisoner-of-war camp at Pukchin-Tarigol, North Korea. He died there from dysentery and pneumonia in March 1951.

“This is a sad day for our town as Army Sgt. Frank Suliman, a native of Edison’s Bonhamtown section, is finally laid to rest with honor and dignity on American soil. I am thankful that Sgt. Suliman’s family now has the closure and peace-of-mind they deserve,” Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey said in a statement, according to the Bridgewater Courier News.

“I am proud of our township police officers who escorted Sgt. Suliman’s remains from Newark Airport to Edison on Sunday; who stationed a 15-officer Honor Guard at the Boylan Funeral Home today, and escorted the sergeant to his final resting place in Wrightstown,” Lankey added. “I hope our officers were a comfort and source of strength to Sgt. Suliman’s family members.”

Former Vice President Joe Biden joined a Democratic chorus calling for the resignation of Attorney General William Barr, despite the fact he once referred to him as “a heck of an honorable guy.”

Biden’s call for the attorney general’s head came after multiple 2020 Democratic candidates came out urging Barr to resign in the wake of revelations that Mueller told Barr that his summary of the report “did not fully capture the context, nature, and substance” of the Russia investigation report.

“I think he’s lost the confidence of the American people. I think he should,” Biden, the leading 2020 candidate, told a reporter in Iowa after being asked whether Barr should resign from the post.

“I think he’s lost the confidence of the American people. I think he should.”

But Biden’s call for resignation may prove to be awkward as he previously lauded Barr during the confirmation hearing back in 1991, when he presided over the Senate Judiciary Committee that went on to unanimously confirm him as the attorney general of the Bush administration.

“It’s a presumptuous thing for me to say but I personally like you, I think you’re a heck of an honorable guy, I think you’re person when I can work with and you’ve demonstrated that,” Biden said.

“When I say can work with I don’t mean you do it our way I mean you when you sit down and negotiate you genuinely negotiate.”

Democrats say the resignation is warranted because Barr allegedly suppressed the Mueller report, and that he cleared President Trump of obstruction of justice charges without looking into the Mueller report’s underlying evidence, a practice Barr says is typical within the Department of Justice.

DOJ CALLS OUT DEMS FOR IGNORING LESS-REDACTED MUELLER REPORT, SERVING SUBPOENA INSTEAD

“AG Barr is a disgrace, and his alarming efforts to suppress the Mueller report show that he’s not a credible head of federal law enforcement,” Elizabeth Warren tweeted. “He should resign — and based on the actual facts in the Mueller report, Congress should begin impeachment proceedings against the President.”

Sen. Kamala Harris, meanwhile, criticized Barr after he told her during the testimony that he didn’t look into the underlying evidence before deciding not to charge the president.

“He made a decision and didn’t review the evidence,” Harris told reporters after the hearing, according to Politico. “No prosecutor worth her salt would make a decision about whether the president of the United States was involved in an obstruction of justice without reviewing the evidence.”

She later tweeted: “What I just saw from the Attorney General is unacceptable. Barr must resign now.”

Sens. Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand also jumped to demand Barr’s resignation, with Gillibrand saying “We can’t trust him to tell the truth, and these embarrassing displays of propaganda have to stop.”
