Rwanda closes border with DR Congo after 2 Ebola deaths in border city

Rwanda has closed part of its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a drastic step that comes after two people have died from Ebola in a border city in the past month.

Officials in Congo said the latest victim died just days after his case was confirmed by medical professionals in Goma, a border city of more than 2 million people that also has an international airport.

The first confirmed case in Goma was a 46-year-old preacher who managed to pass through three health checkpoints on the way from Butembo. Authorities noted that there’s no link between cases in the city, but raised concerns that the highly-contagious virus is spreading.

The Congolese presidency said there had been a “unilateral decision by the Rwandan authorities” to shut down the border crossing at Goma, according to the BBC.

“The Congolese authorities deplore this decision, which runs counter to the advice of the WHO” the statement added.

This comes as the crisis has already become the second-deadliest Ebola outbreak in history, with more than 1,700 people killed even though medical professionals widely use an experimental but effective Ebola vaccine.

Health officials for months feared that an Ebola case would be confirmed in the city. Just days after the first Goma case was confirmed, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak a rare global emergency – the highest level of alarm.

The organization has used such an alarm level only four times in its history, including the Ebola epidemic that took the lives of more than 11,000 people in West Africa between 2014 and 2016.

While the alert prompted a surge of millions of dollars in new pledges by international donors, health workers say a new approach is desperately needed to combat misunderstandings in the community that lead people with Ebola not to seek medical help.

Iran’s president mocks ‘childish’ US sanctions against Tehran’s top diplomat

Iran’s president mocked as “childish” U.S. sanctions targeting the regime’s foreign minister, saying the actions will be a barrier to diplomacy.

The Trump administration imposed financial sanctions on Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday in an effort to further pressure Iran to end its belligerent activities in the Persian Gulf region.

The move to penalize Zarif, an architect of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal who perceived as a more moderate figure in the Islamic Republic, follows Trump’s earlier executive order placing sanctions on Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

President Hassan Rouhani mocked the Trump administration in a speech in western Azerbaijan province, saying “They have started doing childish things.”

“Every day they claim: ‘We want to negotiate with Iran, without any pre-conditions’. and then they put sanctions on the country’s foreign minister,” he added.

Though the sanctions target Zarif personally, they won’t stop him from traveling to New York for official United Nations business, in accordance with America’s international obligations.

“It has no effect on me or my family, as I have no property or interests outside of Iran,” Zarif himself tweeted about the U.S. move.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been heightened ever since the Trump administration pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal and then imposed punitive sanctions on the Iranian regime, sending the economy into freefall.

IRAN CALLS POMPEO’S OFFER TO ADDRESS IRANIAN PEOPLE IN TEHRAN A ‘HYPOCRITICAL GESTURE’

But in recent months, Washington and Tehran were on a constant brink of war after the regime attacked oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and later shot down an unmanned American drone.

The attack on the drone prompted President Trump to order military strikes on the regime – only canceling them at the last minute over concerns of potential casualties on the Iranian side.

Iran also seized a British tanker earlier this month. The regime said the seizure was a response to British authorities seizing an Iranian tanker on route to Syria, though the U.K. says the tanker was seized because it carried oil and was in violation of sanctions against the Syrian regime.

The Iran nuclear deal also unraveled in recent months amid the failure to force the European powers to provide economic relief amid U.S. sanctions, prompting the regime to announce that it’s openly exceeding limits on its nuclear activities.

Harris mocks Gabbard attack on her AG record, calls herself ‘top tier’ while rival at ‘zero or 1 percent’

Sen. Kamala Harris mocked 2020 opponent Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, after the lawmaker from Hawaii slammed the Californian’s record as a prosecutor on the presidential debate stage Wednesday.

Harris claimed it was a case of a “top-tier candidate” being attacked by someone at “zero or 1 percent.”

During Wednesday’s second Democratic debate in Detroit, Gabbard slammed Harris’ controversial record as California’s attorney general, which included extensive prosecution of marijuana users — even though Harris laughed about having consumed the drug herself in a recent radio interview.

TULSI GABBARD RIPS KAMALA HARRIS ON HER RECORD AS CALIFORNIA PROSECUTOR DURING SECOND DEBATE

“Sen. Harris says she’s proud of her record as a prosecutor and that she’ll be a prosecutor president, but I’m deeply concerned about this record,” Gabbard said. “There are too many examples to cite but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”

— U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii

She also blasted Harris for maintaining the cash bail system which, she argued, disproportionately hurt poor people. Gabbard accused Harris of keeping prisoners beyond their sentence in order to use them as “cheap labor” as well as blocking evidence that would have “freed an innocent man from death row.”

Harris later dismissed the attack after the debate during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

“I’m obviously a top-tier candidate, and so I did expect that I would be on the stage and take hits tonight, because there are a lot of people who trying to make the stage for the next debate,” Harris said.

“For a lot of them, it’s do or die,” Cooper added.

“Well, yeah, and especially when people are at zero or 1 percent, or whatever she might be at, and so I did expect I might take hits tonight,” Harris said.

Harris went on offense against Gabbard, who also recently said Harris is unqualified to be commander-in-chief, saying Gabbard was an “apologist” for Syria’s Bashar al-Assad, referring to her meeting with the dictator and previous claims that he’s not an enemy of the U.S.

“I can only take what she says and her opinion so seriously,” Harris said.

North Korea claims it tested new rocket system that could improve ability to strike South Korea, American bases

North Korea says its leader Kim Jong Un supervised the first test-firing of a new multiple rocket launcher system that could improve the Hermit Kingdom’s abilities to strike targets in South Korea and American military bases there.

The report by the regime’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) contradicts the South Korean military’s claims that the Wednesday test was of two short-range ballistic missiles.

NORTH KOREA FIRED ‘MULTIPLE’ PROJECTILES OFF EAST COAST, SOUTH KOREA REPORTS

The launches from the eastern coastal town of Wonsan were the North’s second weapons test in less than a week and were perceived as an effort to pressure the U.S. and South Korean governments to restart the nuclear diplomacy that has stalled for months now.

KCNA said Kim was satisfied with the test firing and said the newly developed rocket system would soon serve a “main role” in his military’s land combat operations, creating “inescapable distress to the forces becoming a fat target of the weapon.”

Such rocket systems, along with new short-range missiles that the regime tested last week, could pose a serious threat to South Korea’s defense.

NORTH KOREA SAYS NEW MISSILE TEST WAS ‘SOLEMN WARNING’ TO SOUTH KOREAN ‘WARMONGERS’

The state media report didn’t disclose how the new rocket system performed, but noted that the test confirmed the system’s “combat effectiveness.”

Released test photos show Kim watching the spectacle with binoculars while a rocket shoots from what appears to be a launcher installed on a vehicle.

According to analysis by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the tested missiles flew about 155 miles at an apogee of 19 miles. At this range, the North would be able to hit targets in the region surrounding Seoul and a major U.S. military base just south of the city.

The North Korea regime has been increasingly lashing out amid a stalemate over nuclear talks, despite Kim meeting with President Trump in June on the North-South Korean border and agreeing to continue the talks.

The regime said last Friday that the new missile test was a “solemn warning” to “South Korean military warmongers” over its weapons development and plans to hold joint military drills with the U.S.

Earlier last week, Kim also visited a newly built submarine and expressed his satisfaction with its weapons system. North Korea said its deployment was “near at hand.”

Sexual abuse of children in care homes, foster care rampant in English county, report says

A new report exposed rampant sexual child abuse in care homes in an English county that lasted for decades, with officials unable to tackle the problem.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse published on Wednesday disclosed that abuse including sexual assault, rape, and voyeurism was widespread during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s in Nottingham City Council and Nottingham County Council’s care homes and in foster care.

‘HOUSE OF HORRORS’ CHILD ABUSE CASES REVEAL HOW OFFENDERS NATIONWIDE USE HOMESCHOOLING TO HIDE THEIR CRIMES

“For more than five decades, the councils failed in their statutory duty to protect children in their care from sexual abuse,” the report read, according to Sky News. “These were children who were being looked after away from their family homes because of adverse childhood experiences and their own pre-existing vulnerabilities.”

“They needed to be nurtured, cared for and protected by adults they could trust. Instead, the councils exposed them to the risk, and reality, of sexual abuse perpetrated primarily by predatory residential staff and foster carers,” it added.

Around 350 people brought up allegations of abuse dating back to the 1960s, though the true scale of abuse is thought to be much higher, according to the broadcaster.

NEW MEXICO PARENTS CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE AFTER MISSING APPOINTMENTS FOR BABY WHO HAD LIVER TRANSPLANT: REPORT

The report found that 16 residential staff were convicted of sexual abuse of children in residential care between the 1970s and 2019, while 10 foster carers were also convicted of sexual abuse of the children they had in their care. Twelve convictions also are related to abuse of children by other children in the care homes.

The panel wrote in the report that flaws in the care system remain to this day and told the councils to “assess the potential risks posed by current and former residential care staff and foster carers.”

The local police, meanwhile, was also criticized for not providing enough resources for investigations into allegations of historical abuse of children in care and not treating the allegations with “sufficient seriousness.”

One survivor of the abuse told the panel that the experience “ruined my life” and caused long-lasting issues.

“I count myself lucky in some ways, as many survivors are still battling alcohol or drug addictions, have seen the inside of a prison cell, or, devastatingly taken their own lives because of what these animals did to us,” the person said. “I just hope that this won’t be a flash in the pan and that this remains in the public eye until the whole system is cleaned up.”

Trump to pitch Israeli-Palestinian peace plan at Camp David summit with Arab leaders: reports

The Trump administration is set to host a peace summit with Arab leaders at Camp David in September to pitch its much-awaited political solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Trump adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner is reportedly seeking to invite the Arab leaders during his trip to the Middle East that began this week. He will visit six countries, including Israel.

JARED KUSHNER SAYS SUCCESSFUL MIDEAST PEACE PLAN WILL BE ‘IRAN’S WORST NIGHTMARE’

The summit will be held at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, and President Trump personally will lay out the peace plan between Israel and Palestinian officials, the Hebrew daily Yediot Ahronot reported, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Israeli government officials were involved in planning the summit — though the newspaper reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won’t attend the summit as his presence would only make Arab leaders more reluctant to participate.

The details of what exactly will be discussed during the summit remained unclear. Reports suggest Trump will refrain from speaking about a Palestinian state but will instead refer to an entity with an Arab presence in East Jerusalem.

LISA DAFTARI: KUSHNER SAYS OPPOSITION TO IRAN BRINGS ISRAEL AND ARAB NATIONS CLOSER TOGETHER

Yet despite the efforts to come up with a peace plan, the Palestinian leadership are believed to be ready to reject the plan immediately, though such move may be just a gift to Netanyahu and his Likud party in advance of the Sept. 17 election.

According to the report, the Israeli cabinet approved the construction of 700 Palestinian homes in a West Bank area fully under Israel’s control. The approval appears to be part of the effort to convince Arab leaders to attend the summit.

The Trump administration released this summer the economic side of the Israeli-Palestinian peace solution. The proposed economic development plan aims to raise $50 billion for the Palestinian economy.

The White House likened the deal to a Marshall Plan for Palestinians and said it was an “opportunity of the century.”

The $50 billion would be raised with $15 billion in grants, $25 billion in low-interest loans and $11 billion in private capital.

The U.S. will consider making a large investment to the funding, along with other countries, but everything is contingent on the agreement of a good governance mechanism. The hope is that the money can’t be siphoned off by corrupt politicians or be misappropriated and given to the families of terrorists – a tactic used openly by the Palestinians.

Ex-swimming executive charged in Hungary for ordering deadly submachine hit on business rival in 1990s

A former Hungarian swimming executive was charged Tuesday with ordering a deadly hit on a business rival in Budapest over two decades ago.

Tamas Gyarfas, who was former vice president of the Lausanne-based International Swimming Federation’s Bureau, denied the charges when he was first detained back in April 2018. He was then released from jail on bail.

Gyarfas’s lawyer Peter Zamecsnik said the latest charges are “absurd,” adding that “based on the investigation material I reviewed, the case will probably fail in court,” according to Reuters.

Hungarian media mogul Janos Fenyo was murdered back in 1998 after getting sprayed with submachine gun bullets in his car at a stoplight in Budapest. It was one of the more shocking killings in Hungary during the turbulent 1990s following the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe.

Prosecutors claim both Gyarfas and Fenyo were business competitors, a rivalry that allegedly prompted Gyarfas to order the death of his nemesis.

“The accused decided in 1997 to settle the score for good by having the plaintiff killed,” prosecutors said in the statement, according to Reuters.

Authorities also said Gyarfas ordered the murder through an associate who he had known since 1994. The charges on Tuesday were brought after new evidence emerged in the last decade.

The breach in total affected about 100 million people in the U.S. and 6 million in Canada. The bank will offer free credit monitoring services to those affected.

The bank said it found out about the vulnerability in its system July 19 and immediately sought help from law enforcement to catch the perpetrator.

The FBI said that some of the information obtained from the bank appeared on the code-hosting site GitHub on July 17, while a month before that, a Twitter user who went by “erratic” sent another user a direct message on Slack alerting about the distribution of the bank’s data that includes names, birthdates and Social Security numbers.

“I’ve basically strapped myself with a bomb vest, (expletive) dropping capitol ones dox and admitting it,” the message said. “I wanna distribute those buckets I think first.”

Thompson, a former employee of Amazon Web Services, didn’t try to hide on the Internet that she was a hacker, the New York Times reported. She was listed as an organizer of a hacker group on social network Meetup.

“I’ve been meaning to put together something like a hack night or somethng soon,” she wrote on May 13, according to the newspaper.

“It’s been a crazy past two weeks, and my cat had to go to the vet everyday last week but she’s finally starting to recover maybe this wednesday in capitol hill? I’ll do an all day thing at starbucks until they close, I’e got nothing better to do,” she added.

Investigators say they verified Thompson’s online persona after she posted a photo of an invoice she had gotten from a veterinarian looking after one of her pets.

The bank said the most of of the hacked data consists of information supplied by consumers and small businesses who applied for credit cards between 2005 and early 2019. The data also expose phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth and self-reported income.
