Alleged Seattle hacker arrested in Capital One breach, boasted on social media: report

Authorities claim a Seattle software engineer was responsible for the hacking of Capital One and obtained the personal data of over 100 million people in what appears to be one of the biggest breaches of a big bank in history.

Paige Thompson, 33, was caught by Seattle authorities after leaving an extensive digital footprint of her alleged crime on the Internet, including boasting about it on the Internet, authorities said. She’s now charged with one count of computer fraud and abuse.

CAPITAL ONE DATA BREACH EXPOSES INFO OF 106M CUSTOMERS, APPLICANTS; SUSPECT ARRESTED

Capital One said Monday that Thompson – who according to a FBI complaint also goes by the handle “erratic” – got information including credit scores and balances plus the Social Security numbers of about 140,000 customers, the bank said.

The breach in total affected about 100 million people in the U.S. and 6 million in Canada. The bank will offer free credit monitoring services to those affected.

The bank said it found out about the vulnerability in its system July 19 and immediately sought help from law enforcement to catch the perpetrator.

The FBI said that some of the information obtained from the bank appeared on the code-hosting site GitHub on July 17, while a month before that, a Twitter user who went by “erratic” sent another user a direct message on Slack alerting about the distribution of the bank’s data that includes names, birthdates and Social Security numbers.

“I’ve basically strapped myself with a bomb vest, (expletive) dropping capitol ones dox and admitting it,” the message said. “I wanna distribute those buckets I think first.”

MILLIONS OF BULGARIANS’ PERSONAL DATA HACKED; RUSSIAN LINK SUSPECTED

Thompson, a former employee of Amazon Web Services, didn’t try to hide on the Internet that she was a hacker, the New York Times reported. She was listed as an organizer of a hacker group on social network Meetup.

“I’ve been meaning to put together something like a hack night or somethng soon,” she wrote on May 13, according to the newspaper.

“It’s been a crazy past two weeks, and my cat had to go to the vet everyday last week but she’s finally starting to recover maybe this wednesday in capitol hill? I’ll do an all day thing at starbucks until they close, I’e got nothing better to do,” she added.

Investigators say they verified Thompson’s online persona after she posted a photo of an invoice she had gotten from a veterinarian looking after one of her pets.

The bank said the most of of the hacked data consists of information supplied by consumers and small businesses who applied for credit cards between 2005 and early 2019. The data also expose phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth and self-reported income.

“While I am grateful that the perpetrator has been caught, I am deeply sorry for what has happened,” said Capital One CEO Richard D. Fairbank. “I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected and I am committed to making it right.”

Scottish man wanted for rape arrested months after faking his death in California

Authorities say a Scottish man who allegedly faked his death off California’s Carmel coast to avoid rape charges back home has been arrested.

Kim Vincent Avis, 55, also known as Ken Gordon-Avis, was arrested in Colorado Springs, Colorado, last week, authorities announced on Friday. He’s being held by the U.S. Marshals Service.

This photo provided by the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office shows Kim Vincent Avis, also known as Ken Gordon-Avis, on Friday, July 26, 2019. The Scottish man who authorities say faked his death off California’s Carmel coast to avoid rape charges back home was arrested in Colorado Springs, Colo., a week earlier, authorities announced Friday. He is being held by the U.S. Marshals Service, Cmdr. Kathy Pallozolo with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said. The Associated Press has identified him as Kim Gordon.

The man’s teenage son alerted the police that his father disappeared on Feb. 25 after going for a nighttime swim in the area.

But the searchers couldn’t locate the man or any trace that he was actually swimming at Monastery Beach, often dubbed “Mortuary Beach” for its deadly reputation.

Three days later, investigators began to float the possibility that this was an elaborate hoax to avoid facing the law as the man is wanted on 24 counts of rape in Scotland.

When that came up, we start to wonder if this is a hoax, and he’s trying to escape these charges out of Scotland.”

— Capt. John Thornburg

“When that came up, we start to wonder if this is a hoax, and he’s trying to escape these charges out of Scotland,” sheriff’s Capt. John Thornburg said.

The detectives claim the son’s story lacked crucial details, and he couldn’t explain how he and his father got to California’s central coast after traveling by air from Scotland to Los Angeles.

“There was a lack of detail,” Thornburg said at the time. “The son, who reported it, couldn’t even tell us where he went in under the water.”

The son has been returned to Scotland and won’t face charges for filing a false report. The suspect, meanwhile, is set to be extradited back to Scotland to face the charges.

Hong Kong police fire tear gas at protesters

Hong Kong police fired tear gas Saturday at protesters after they defied officials’ calls to stop a march in a neighborhood where a mob brutally attacked demonstrators six days ago in a train station.

Protesters wearing black streamed through Yuen Long even as police declined permission for the march, citing potential risks of clashes between local residents and protesters.

The march comes after white-clad assailants attacked dozens of people last Sunday night, including some demonstrators who were heading home after the latest mass protest in the summer-long pro-democracy movement.

HONG KONG PROTESTS GROW VIOLENT AS MASKED ASSAILANTS ATTACK DEMONSTRATORS, PASSENGERS AT SUBWAY STATION

Authorities said the train station attackers were connected to triad gangs and others were villagers who live in the area.

But less than three hours after the start of the march on Saturday, police fired tear gas in a bid to disperse the crowd.

“Hong Kong police know the law and break the law,” protesters chanted as they made their way through the streets.

The government released a statement warning the protesters that police would move in to break up the demonstration and accused the protesters of “holding iron poles, self-made shields and even removing fences from roads,” and that some had vandalized a police vehicle with officers inside.

An earlier government statement also said that the police forces feared a “possible deterioration of the situation.”

“Police appeal to members of the public to stay calm and leave the area as soon as possible as a chaotic scene may ensue within a short period of time,” the earlier statement read.

The latest protest follows the massive demonstrations that began in Hong Kong last month against an extradition bill that would have allowed suspects to face trial in mainland China.

Critics warned that the bill would compromise the precious rights of Hong Kong and break the agreement that guaranteed the city’s autonomy from the Chinese communist government.

The protesters succeeded in getting the bill suspended, but activists used the opportunity to push for further pro-democracy policies, including direct elections, the dissolution of the current legislature and an investigation into alleged police brutality in the Chinese territory.

A former British colony, Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997 under the framework of “one country, two systems.” The arrangement promised that the city will have certain democratic freedoms that are not afforded mainland citizens.

Russian suspect in $4B Bitcoin fraud is sued in California; US, Russia seek his extradition from Greece

A Russian suspect linked to a $4 billion Bitcoin fraud case — whose extradition from Greece is sought by U.S. authorities — has now been hit with a civil lawsuit in California.

The U.S. is after Alexander Vinnik and his digital currency exchange company, BTC-e, over his alleged role in the fraud case.

DEATH, DOGS AND A MISSING $190 MILLION: THE STRANGE CASE OF CRYPTO EXCHANGE QUADRIGACX

Federal prosecutors charged him in 2017 with stealing Bitcoins from other virtual exchanges. U.S. authorities now seek to recover penalties of $100 million from Vinnik and his company, Bloomberg reported.

According to a prosecutors’ statement, Vinnik’s company is incorporated in Cyprus, or the Seychelles, or even both. Californian users, in addition to users from other places, used the exchange to trade Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Vinnik remains detained in Greece as he continues to fight the U.S. extradition request. Russia, meanwhile, is also seeking his extradition, with Vinnik’s lawyers saying in 2017 that he wouldn’t contest the Russian request.

He denied the allegations raised by U.S. prosecutors and instead said he was merely a technician and the platform was one of his clients.

“I have nothing to do with what I am accused of,” he told the judges.

North Korea says new missile test was ‘solemn warning’ to South Korean ‘warmongers’

North Korea said Friday that the new missile test is a “solemn warning” to “South Korean military warmongers” over its weapons development and plans to hold joint military drills with the U.S.

South Korea’s military said the information about the weapon launched by the North on Thursday shows similarities to the Russian-made Iskander, a short-range missile with nuclear capabilities. A North Korean version of the missile could potentially reach all of South Korea — and the 28,500 U.S. forces stationed there — and would be especially hard to intercept, the military added.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised the test launch on Thursday, with pictures of him looking through binoculars released by the state media. The leader urged earlier this week to boost the country’s defense capabilities and inspected a new submarine.

Pyongyang’s message comes amid its continued pressure campaign in the wake of the potential nuclear talks with President Trump.

Kim and Trump recently met on the Korean border where they supposedly agreed to continue the dialogue. But despite the promise, the U.S. and North Korean officials have been struggling to set up working-level talks.

Yet while North Korea was particularly harsh toward South Korea in its statement carried by the state media, it also stayed clear of the attacks on the U.S., signaling that the regime still seeks to have a dialogue.

NORTH KOREA’S ECONOMY CONTRACTS BY MOST IN 21 YEARS: REPORT

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo downplayed the significance of the new missile test and told Bloomberg that a new round of talks with North Korea could begin “in a couple [of] weeks.”

“Everybody tries to get ready for negotiations and create leverage and create risk for the other side,” Pompeo said of the launches.

But North Korea’s statement was unequivocal in opposition to the South’s purchase of U.S.-made high-tech fighter jets and U.S.-South Korean plans to hold military drills this summer that the regime claims are rehearsals for an invasion.

It said the weapons test “must have given uneasiness and agony to some targeted forces enough as it intended” and accused South Korea of introducing “ultramodern offensive weapons.”

Kim said the new North Korean weapons are hard to intercept because of their “low-altitude gliding and leaping flight orbit,” the North’s Korean Central News Agency reported Friday. He added that the possession of “such a state-of-the-art weaponry system” is of “huge eventful significance” in boosting his country military capabilities.

Earlier this week, Kim ordered officials to beef up the regime’s military capabilities and was photographed inspecting a newly built submarine despite the potential revival of nuclear diplomacy with the U.S.

Kim expressed “great satisfaction” with the new submarine that will be soon deployed and “stressed the need to steadily and reliably increase the national defense capability by directing big efforts to the development of the naval weapons and equipment such as submarine,” according to state media.

Chelsea Clinton denies close ties to Jeffrey Epstein’s ex

Chelsea Clinton echoed her ex-president father in denying an association with Jeffrey Epstein and reports that she was a close friend of Ghislaine Maxwell, the wealthy financier’s former girlfriend — who settled at least two lawsuits over sex-related allegations.

Epstein, 66, was arrested July 6 on sex trafficking charges. He pleaded not guilty to accusations he ran a trafficking operation involving teens.

He allegedly created and maintained a “vast network” and operation from 2002 “up to and including” 2005, enabling him to “sexually exploit and abuse dozens of underage girls” in addition to paying victims to recruit other girls.

Since his arrest, many prominent figures have come forward to deny their association with Epstein, most notably former President Bill Clinton, who said he “knows nothing” about the allegations and took just a few trips on Epstein’s airplane.

But now the former first daughter also has issued a statement amid a Politico report that Maxwell, who was not charged but reportedly settled two lawsuits filed by women who claimed she participated in the alleged sex trafficking, has been close to the Clinton family.

Maxwell reportedly became friends with Chelsea Clinton, vacationing together on a yacht in 2009 and attending Chelsea’s wedding to Marc Mezvinsky in 2010.

JEFFREY EPSTEIN FOUND INJURED IN NEW YORK CITY JAIL CELL AFTER POSSIBLE SUICIDE ATTEMPT: REPORT

“Ghislaine was the contact between Epstein and Clinton,” a person familiar with the relationship told the outlet. “She ended up being close to the family because she and Chelsea ended up becoming close.”

The spokesperson for Chelsea Clinton and her husband told Politico that the couple wasn’t aware of Maxwell’s alleged involvement in Epstein’s sex trafficking ring.

“It wasn’t until 2015 that Chelsea and (her husband) Marc became aware of the horrific allegations against Ghislaine Maxwell and hope that all the victims find justice,” the spokesperson said.

“Chelsea and Marc were friendly with her because of her relationship with a dear friend of theirs. When that relationship ended, Chelsea and Marc’s friendship with her ended as well.”

Bill Clinton’s spokesman issued a similar statement after Epstein’s arrest, claiming he “knows nothing” about the “terrible crimes” allegedly committed by Epstein.

“In 2002 and 2003, President Clinton took a total of four trips on Jeffrey Epstein’s airplane: one to Europe, one to Asia, and two to Africa, which included stops in connection with the work of the Clinton Foundation,” the statement said.

“Staff, supporters of the foundation, and his Secret Service detail traveled on every leg of every trip. He had one meeting with Epstein in his Harlem office in 2002, and around the same time made one brief visit to Epstein’s New York apartment with a staff member and his security detail. He’s not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade, and he has never been to Little St. James Island, Epstein’s ranch in New Mexico, or his residence in Florida.”

The House Oversight Committee announced Wednesday that it had postponed a vote on whether to recommend that White House counselor Kellyanne Conway be held in contempt of Congress, as talks continued with the Trump administration.

“I am postponing the Committee’s vote as I work with the White House to try to reach an accommodation,” panel Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said in a statement. “Ms. Conway violated the law numerous times and must be held accountable.”

KELLYANNE CONWAY DEFIES HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE SUBPOENA OVER ALLEGED HATCH ACT VIOLATIONS

The vote was supposed to take place Thursday and recommend that the House find Conway to be in contempt of Congress “for her refusal to comply with a subpoena duly issued” by the committee, The Washington Post reported.

The move stems from Conway’s failure to appear July 15 to testify after a government watchdog found that she violated the Hatch Act, a law banning federal government employees from engaging in certain political activities, despite the committee’s subpoena.

The Office of the Special Counsel, which is separate from the office with a similar name previously run by Robert Mueller, said in a scathing report in June that Conway violated the Hatch Act by “disparaging Democratic presidential candidates while speaking in her official capacity during television interviews and on social media,” and recommended she be fired.

A White House attorney sent a letter to Cummings advising him that Conway won’t appear before the panel, prompting calls to hold her in contempt of Congress.

Conway told Fox News that she was “taking one for the team” and insisted that as a presidential adviser she shouldn’t be forced to testify.

“I’d be happy to testify. I have nothing to hide. I’ve done nothing wrong,” Conway added. “I would love to go testify, but I’m taking one for the team here because there’s a longstanding tradition to claim immunity and not have people like me testify.”

While the atmosphere remained cordial, she clashed with Corbyn for the last time, who suggested that she should join the opposition to stop “the “reckless” Johnson’s government that promised to lead the country out of the European Union with or without a deal.

She ended the exchange by calling on Corbyn to resign, saying “perhaps I could just finish my exchange with him by saying this: as a party leader who has accepted when her time was up, perhaps the time is now for him to do the same?”

During her farewell speech on the steps of the Downing Street residence, she reiterated that she will continue to serve as a Member of Parliament and believes Britain must leave the EU.

The speech was interrupted by a local anti-Brexit activist who was heard shouting “Stop Brexit” – prompting May to respond, “I think not.”

May then visited the Queen and formally submitted her resignation, allowing the Queen to welcome Johnson and ask him to form the government.

As Johnson was traveling to the Buckingham Palace to see the Queen, his convoy was halted by climate change protesters. Police had to step up to break up a human chain formed by activists that briefly stopped the convoy.

BORIS JOHNSON TO BECOME NEXT BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, AFTER WINNING CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADERSHIP BALLOT

Johnson promised a “cabinet for modern Britain” as he prepares to take the reins of the country after winning the Conservative Party leadership election on Tuesday against Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

While the names will fully be released only in the evening, he’s expected to appoint pro-Brexit ministers in a bid to infuse energy into the British government that has been consumed by Brexit under May’s leadership.

Among the names floated in the media, current Home Secretary Sajid Javid, who also ran for the party’s leadership, is slated to take the Chancellor position.

Another arch-Brexiteer, Dominic Raab is expected to replace Hunt, who reportedly declined a defense minister position in Johnson’s cabinet, a position perceived as a demotion.

Johnson, an avid supporter of Brexit, will attempt to succeed where May failed – getting Britain to honor the 2016 referendum result and leave the EU by the Oct. 31 deadline.

Chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said “we are ready to listen and to work with” Johnson, but didn’t budge on the union’s refusal to revisit the deal.

“A no-deal Brexit will never be, never, the choice of the EU. But we are prepared,” he said in Brussels.

But the new incoming prime minister said Tuesday that he will deliver Brexit “in a new spirit of can do,” adding “I say to all the doubters: ‘Dude, we are going to energize the country, we are going to get Brexit done.’”

Top liberal think tanks says Trump’s ‘rule of law’ message on immigration is winning

A top liberal think tank has warned that President Trump’s immigration message is actually winning among most voters and makes Democrats appear weak on enforcement.

The Center for American Progress has released a new report arguing that as Democrats drifted away from the “rule of law” message, it allowed Republicans to rebrand their party as the sole party of rule of law.

IRA MEHLMAN: DEMOCRATS COMMIT POLITICAL SUICIDE ON IMMIGRATION

This created “the false dichotomy of America as either a nation of immigrants or a nation of laws” that then makes Democrats seem weak on enforcing the nation’s laws, according to the Daily Beast that first obtained the report.

Tom Jawetz, vice president of immigration policy at the think tank, added that those supporting humane immigration policy “have ceded powerful rhetorical ground to immigration restrictionists, who are happy to masquerade as the sole defenders of America as a nation of laws.”

The paper coincides with Trump’s renewed calls to reform immigration laws, arguing that they don’t stop the problem of illegal immigration and have significant loopholes.

“We’ve got to straighten out our immigration laws,” Trump said during a rally in North Carolina last week. “You know, in a very short period of time, if the Democrats would give us a few votes, we could solve the immigration problem and it would be so great.”

MOST DEMS VOW TO DECRIMINALIZE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION DURING NIGHT 2 DEBATE

Democratic 2020 presidential candidates, meanwhile, have been struggling to find an effective message that counter Trump’s rhetoric and without appearing as embracing extreme policies.

But according to the report, radical proposals such as nationwide amnesty or the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) only “fuels louder calls for maximum enforcement, which then strengthen calls for abolition, ad infinitum.”

Scores of candidates, including Sens. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders, have backed the proposal to decriminalize illegal border crossings and no longer treat the crime as a criminal matter.

Only Sen. Michael Bennet rejected the proposal, while former Vice President Joe Biden took no position on the matter.

Some Democrats running for president also gave credence to the far-left movement to abolish the federal immigration authorities, though many early supporters of the movement such as Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has since toned down the issue.

But the interview took a bizarre turn when Stone praised a Ukranian politician for selecting Putin to be the godfather of his children. Putin, an Orthodox Christian, said practitioners cannot refuse such a request.

“Oh, you cannot refuse it?” Stone then asked. “I thought it was a big honor for you to be the godfather of his daughter … Otherwise, I would ask you to be the godfather for my daughter.”

Putin then asked about Stone’s daughter and whether she wants to become an Orthodox Christian. Stone responded, saying “we’ll make her that.”

Later in the interview, Stone went on to state that the controversial 2013 Russian law banning pro-gay “propaganda” was actually “a sensible law.”

“Years ago when we were talking about homosexuality, you said that in Russia we don’t propagate it,” Stone said to Putin, who then noted that the law bans “propaganda among minors.”

“Yes, that’s the one,” Stone agreed. “It seems like maybe that’s a sensible law.”

“It is aimed at allowing people to reach maturity and then decide who they are and how they want to live,” Putin added. “There are no restrictions at all after this.”

Stone, best known for movies such as “JFK” and “Nixon,” first became close to Putin following a 2017 documentary series called the “The Putin Interviews.”

The filmmaker was mocked following the release of the series after Putin showed him on camera footage he claimed was Russian military forces bombing ISIS militants in Syria.

It turned out that the footage was originally U.S. Department of Defense video, from either 2009 or 2013, showing anti-Taliban operations in Afghanistan.
