Trump slams ‘terrible’ Jimmy Carter as ‘forgotten president’ after suggestion 2016 win was ‘illegitimate’

President Trump fired back at former President Jimmy Carter’s suggestion that he’s illegitimate president, saying Carter is “the forgotten president” who’s not only “trashed” by his own party but also remembered only as being “terrible” for the country.

Trump addressed the comments made by Carter during a news conference Saturday following the G-20 summit in Japan, saying that although Carter is “a nice man, he was a terrible president,” before noting that “he’s a Democrat and it’s a typical talking point.”

He added that Carter is “loyal to the Democrats” but “as everybody now understands, I won not because of Russia, not because of anybody but myself.”

“He’s a nice man, he was a terrible president. He’s a Democrat and it’s a typical talking point.”

Carter said Friday at a Virginia forum that “I think a full investigation would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016.”

“He lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf,” he added. When asked if Trump was “illegitimate president,” Carter responded saying “Basically, what I just said, which I can’t retract.”

Trump said during the news conference that he “campaigned better, smarter, hotter than Hillary Clinton. I went to Wisconsin, I went to Michigan the night of the vote.”

“I won Michigan, I won Wisconsin, I won Pennsylvania, I won states that traditionally haven’t been won by Republicans for many years,” he continued. “This had nothing to do with anybody but the fact that I worked harder and much smarter than Hillary Clinton did.”

The president added that he was “surprised” Carter made such comments but he also “felt bad” for him as he’s been attacked even by his own party.

“He’s been trashed within his own party, he’s been badly trashed. I felt bad for him because you look over the years, his party has virtually … he’s like the forgotten president,” Trump said. “And I understand why they say that.”

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called “repugnant” an incident in which an employee at a restaurant in the city allegedly spat on Eric Trump, and urged city residents to show civility.

“Civility matters,” Democrat Lori Lightfoot said at a news conference Thursday. “We may not agree and, in my case, I don’t agree with a lot of the things that President Trump stands for. Our values are different. But you cross the line when you assault someone.”

“You absolutely cross the line when you intentionally target someone for that kind of treatment. No one deserves that. No one,” she continued.

“This is America. People have a right to have their views, no matter if we agree with them or not. But we cannot countenance people who go out of their way to express themselves in such a repugnant fashion.”

She went on to praise President Trump’s third child as “very gracious” for not pressing charges against the waitress accused in the attack.

“Mr. Trump decided he wasn’t going to press charges, which I think was very gracious of him under the circumstances. This isn’t about politics,” she said. “This is about civility. And we have to have that in our city.”

Trump at G-20 mocks Dems, says Biden no ‘Winston Churchill,’ while Harris got ‘too much credit’

President Trump was far across the globe Saturday at the G-20 Summit in Japan but he had plenty to say about the race for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination.

During a news conference at the conclusion of the global event — where Trump met with the leaders of China, Russia and Saudi Arabia, among others — the president mocked Joe Biden over his fiery exchange with Sen. Kamala Harris on the issue of race during Thursday’s Democratic debate in Miami.

“This wasn’t Winston Churchill we are dealing with,” Trump said about Biden, adding that he thought Harris received “too much credit” for her debate performance.

“I thought that she was given too much credit. He didn’t do well, certainly, and maybe the facts were not necessarily on his side,” Trump said. “I think she was given too much credit for what she did, wasn’t that outstanding and probably he was hit harder than he should have been hit.”

Trump later reiterated that Harris was given “far too much credit” and went on to mock Biden for his response.

“I think she was given far too much credit for what she did, it was so out of the can, what she said, it was right out of the box and I thought that he didn’t respond great, this wasn’t Winston Churchill we are dealing with,” he said.

Harris’ sluggish campaign got a huge boost following Thursday’s debate after the U.S. senator from California attacked Biden over his opposition to federal busing and touted his work with avowed segregationists in the U.S.

“I also believe — and it is personal — and it was actually very hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and career on the segregation of race in this country,” Harris said.

“You worked with them to oppose busing,” Harris added, referring to efforts to limit orders for school desegregation by busing. In an emotional moment, she told her own story of being bused as a little girl in California.

HARRIS CAPITALIZES ON BREAKOUT DEBATE PERFORMANCE, AS BIDEN DEFENDS RECORD ON RACE

Biden defended himself, saying Harris’ comments about his record were a “mischaracterization of my position across the board,” and that he “did not praise racists.”

Trump was cautious during the news conference when asked whether Harris would be a tough opponent in the 2020 general election, saying “You never know who’s gonna be tough.”

“One day you think he’s gonna be tough, turns out to be not much,” he continued, recalling his 2016 election campaign where he had to beat numerous candidates in the Republican primary.

CNN commentator Van Jones said former Vice President Joe Biden “took the heart out of the civil rights movement” after defending state rights and failing to apologize during the Democratic debate for working with segregationists in the Senate.

Jones went after Biden after he defended his work with segregationists and busing policies during a heated exchange with Sen. Kamala Harris, who took the lead in attacking him.

“Let me say as an African-American, why that was just unacceptable. That very argument was the argument that was used that the federal government should leave us,” Jones said on CNN.

“So he just took the heart out of the civil rights movement with that argument. Our plea was that we are one, the Constitution applies to all of us, and we want the federal government to stand with us and against the local racists.”

He added that it was “heartbreaking” that Biden didn’t apologize for touting his work with avowed segregationist Democrats during his time in the Senate.

“My heart breaks about it at a personal level because all he had to do was say: ‘you know what? I think I was wrong there.’ If he had just said, ‘you know what, Kamala? I think I was wrong then, and I’ve learned something, and I’ve learned something from talking to people like you,” he said. “It was a heartbreaking moment.”

Joe Biden appeared intent to follow the rules while defending himself from an onslaught from Democratic challenger Sen. Kamala Harris who attacked him on his civil rights record during Thursday night’s debate, abruptly saying, “my time’s up, I’m sorry,” while giving his defense.

The former Vice President was slammed on the debate stage Thursday night, particularly by Harris who said Biden’s earlier comments about being able to work with segregationist senators early in his career were “hurtful.”

BIDEN CAMPAIGN DEFENDS FORMER VP AFTER DEBATE, CALLS CIVIL RIGHTS RECORD ‘UNASSAILABLE’

The Biden campaign tried to mitigate the damage after the debate, with his campaign staff and surrogates defending his civil rights record as “unassailable.”

“If you want to put Vice President Biden’s record on civil rights up against anybody else on that stage, he’ll stand the test of time,” senior adviser Symone Sanders told reporters Thursday night.

“What voters want to hear is what kind of president he’s going to be and how he’s going to tackle these issues in the White House, and I think his record on civil rights is unassailable,” communications director Kate Bedingfield added.

Beto O’Rourke said Thursday he’s “not running against anybody” when asked about the attacks by his rivals in the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle.

The former congressman admitted Thursday that he felt like a target on the debate stage, particularly after his Democratic opponent Julián Castro called him out over immigration.

“I feel like my responsibility on that stage is to describe and define what I want to do for this country, and the way in which I want to do it,” O’Rourke said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I’m not running against anybody — I’m running for the United States of America. So I wanted to outline our vision, the means that would allow us to achieve it.”

He was quizzed by the show hosts over why he didn’t use the platform to attack fellow Democrats and their policies, especially given that O’Rourke is trailing in polls.

While he refrained from slamming his opponents, other candidates didn’t share the same view and made repeated attacks against him.

In a segment about immigration, O’Rourke was pressed by Castro over whether he would support decriminalization of border crossings, an idea O’Rourke brushed off over concerns about prosecuting drug smugglers and human traffickers.

“I just think it’s a mistake, I think it’s a mistake, Beto, and I think if you truly want to change the system, then we got to repeal that section,” Castro fired back. “If not, it might as well be the same policy.”

O’Rourke defended himself by saying he would work to rewrite the country’s immigration laws in general, prompting a stark rebuke from Castro.

“That’s actually not true. … If you did your homework on this issue, you would know we should repeal [the law that criminalizes illegal border crossings],” Castro said.

Despite the criticism, O’Rourke gave himself an “A” rating for his performance on Thursday. “I was really happy with how I did. I got to lay out why I’m running for president,” O’Rourke said.

“My job is to explain that on that stage and … bring this country together around the means to actually get that done,” he added, also telling CNN that he did feel other candidates were targeting him specifically.

For his part, Castro told Fox News’ Shannon Bream after the debate that his policy for decriminalization isn’t as radical as people think.

“He clearly had not done his homework,” said Castro, dismissing O’Rourke’s concern about smugglers and drug traffickers by arguing that there are existing laws to deal with those issues.

“On the first night, they didn’t go after Joe Biden. When you’re sitting with 42-43 percent in the early states and they are not attacking you, that’s an interesting dynamic,” Scarborough said Thursday morning.

“Also for Americans, this election is about one thing. It’s about one man. It’s about Donald Trump,” the MSNBC host added, before pointing to his political career as an example.

Scarborough went on to criticize the 2020 Democrats for embracing the “very unpopular” ‘Medicare-for-all’ policy, saying the Trump campaign will use it to attack during the general election.

Anderson Cooper says ‘stench’ is coming from federal immigration authorities over migrant detention facilities

CNN host Anderson Cooper said a “stench” is coming from federal immigration authorities over the handling of the migrants crossing the border.

Cooper made the comments Tuesday after Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner John Sanders’ resignation and the pressure on the Trump administration to improve the conditions of the migrant detention facilities.

“Some of the people responsible… compare the influx of migrants to a storm or flood or a tide, as if this all fell from the sky or rolled in from the sea,” he said.

“At the end of the day, though, this is not an act of God. These are people, poor people, young people and whatever you think about the case they may have for coming here, they are here.”

“They are now in custody here and those words in custody don’t just mean are being held, they mean in the care of, or as Webster’s has it, the act or process of preserving in safety, which is not what’s happening,” he added.”

The CNN host noted that the “stench” caused by subpar conditions in the facilities was actually coming from the authorities responsible for the situation.

“Most of the young detainees have not been able to shower or wash clothes since they arrived at the facility. Those who visited said they have no access to toothbrushes, toothpaste or soap. ‘There is a stench, said Elora Mukherjee, director of the Immigrants’ Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School, one of the lawyers who visited the facility. ’The overwhelming majority of children have not bathed since they crossed the border,’ she said,” Cooper said.

He added: “There is a stench, she said, speaking literally of human beings living worse than animals because animals at least have the means to clean themselves. She might have well been speaking figuratively of the stench coming from the places where the people responsible for all this are failing to take responsibility.”

The House approved a $4.5 billion supplemental spending bill on Tuesday night to address humanitarian issues at the U.S.-Mexico border and to provide additional funding for food, water, medical services and stronger protections for unaccompanied children, among other things.

The House bill, which passed 230-195, included specifics that would prevent the Trump administration from allowing any funding to go toward beefing up Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel at the border, likely to become a point of contention with Republicans.

Mnuchin says US-China trade deal is 90 percent done

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday that the U.S. and China are inching closer to finalize a long-awaited trade deal.

Mnuchin made the announcement in the backdrop of the G-20 meeting this weekend in Japan where President Trump and President Xi Jinping could make the breakthrough in trade talks that have recently stalled.

“We were about 90% of the way there and I think there’s a path to complete this,” he told CNBC.

“The message we want to hear is that they want to come back to the table and continue because I think there is a good outcome for their economy and the U.S. economy to get balanced trade and to continue to build on this relationship,” he continued.

“I’m hopeful that we can move forward with a plan … President Trump and President Xi have a very close working relationship. We had a productive meeting at the last G-20.”

Mnuchin claims he remained confident that an agreement could be inked by the end of this year, but cautioned that “there needs to be the right efforts in place.”

The U.S. and China have been embroiled in a trade war, with both countries slapping punitive tariffs on each other in retaliation.

TRUMP, XI TO MEET AT G-20 AS TRADE HOSTILITIES PERSIST

Last month, the Trump administration increased tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports from 10 percent to 25 percent.

In retaliation, China increased tariffs on thousands of American products worth about $60 billion. A 25 percent tariff was levied on a few thousand other products, including soy oil, peanut oil, petrochemicals, frozen minerals and others.

Trump repeatedly criticized China for, in his view, unfair trade practices that exploit the U.S. market at the cost of American manufacturing and other jobs.

Experts said that while the Trump-Xi meeting at G-20 will unlikely to result in a deal that weekend, it should progress the talks and open more opportunities for negotiators to come up with a solution to finalize the deal.

Dems hope for explosive Mueller testimony despite his pledge to not go ‘beyond report’

Democrats hoping for explosive testimony of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller on July 17 may end up disappointed. Mueller has previously said his report is “my testimony” and that he won’t go “beyond our report.”

Mueller’s appearance before the House judiciary and intelligence committees will come following a subpoena, according to the committees’ respective chairmen, Reps. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

House Democrats have seized on the Mueller report detailing Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and some have cited possible examples of President Trump’s obstruction of justice, as detailed in the report, as grounds for impeachment.

JAY SEKULOW: MUELLER TESTIMONY TO HOUSE LAWMAKERS WON’T DIFFER FROM HIS REPORT

But the effort to bring a deeply polarizing figure to the Capitol may leave the Democrats empty-handed as Mueller himself stressed during an unprecedented press conference last month that he won’t be adding anything more than what’s already in the report.

“The report is my testimony. I would not provide information beyond that which is already public in any appearance before Congress.”

— Robert Mueller

“Now I hope and expect this to be the only time that I will speak to you in this manner. I am making that decision myself. No one has told me whether I can or should testify or speak further about this matter,” Mueller said May 29.

“There has been discussion about an appearance before Congress. Any testimony from this office would not go beyond our report,” he continued.

“It contains our findings and analysis and the reasons for the decisions we made. We chose those words carefully and the work speaks for itself. And the report is my testimony. I would not provide information beyond that which is already public in any appearance before Congress.”

CHAD PERGRAM: MEDIA COVERAGE OF MUELLER TESTIMONY WILL BE ‘OFF THE RICHTER SCALE’

Yet Democrats appear to tout Mueller’s upcoming testimony not for any new information he may disclose but because he will repeat the findings of the report in a public forum that will be watched by millions of people.

“Russia attacked our democracy to help Trump win. Trump welcomed and used that help. As Mueller said, that should concern every American,” Schiff wrote in a tweet. “And now, every American will get to hear directly from Mueller.”

But the latest stunt may even backfire as Mueller will also be grilled by Republicans about the allegations of spying on the Trump campaign, the text messages between FBI officials Lisa Page and Peter Strzok, and the salacious dossier penned by former British spy Christopher Steele that they claim eventually paved way to the Russia probe.

Trump’s attorney, Jay Sekulow, echoed Mueller’s previous comments on Tuesday night amid the news of his testimony, saying the testimony is unlikely to differ from the report.

“I don’t think you’re gonna see anything different in his testimony than in his report,” Sekulow said on Fox News’ “Hannity.” “There are a lot of questions that have to be asked and have to be answered. … I can make a list of 100 questions.”
