7-year fight for Lake Washington shoreline ends with Seattle paying $800G to property owners, turning lot into public park

A Lake Washington shoreline lot near Lake City has become a public park, ending a seven-year fight that pitted local residents and adjacent property owners who wanted to take the land for themselves.

A 60-foot-wide lot will be accessible to the public and named as N.E. 130th Street End, a win for the community that has used the lot for decades but lived in the cheaper houses up the hill from the beach.

CALIFORNIA FARMERS FURIOUS OVER DELAYED PAYMENTS FOR LAND SEIZED IN HIGH-SPEED RAIL PUSH

The city of Seattle, meanwhile, paid $800,000 to Keith Holmquist and Fred Kaseburg, who owned properties on each side of the lot, after trying to use legal loopholes to take control of the lot The Seattle Times reported.

The decision to make the land public stems both Holmquist and Kasenburg’s discovery that the status of the lot between their properties was unclear as a deed back in 1932 conveying it to the Cedar Park Community Club – for use as a public beach – had never been delivered, according to the outlet.

This prompted the men to lay claim to the land in 2012 and in 2015 put up a sign stating that it was a private property.

Holmquist defended against the complaints from the locals and told the Times in 2015 that the lot has been used for anti-social activity. “Alcohol, sex out there, drug use,” he said.  “Hypodermic needles, syringes. Beer cans, hard-liquor bottles.”

NEW YORK BOOKSTORE CLASHES WITH DE BLASIO OVER HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION: ‘IT’S REALLY NO HONOR’

But this only led to locals organizing in an effort to turn the land private. Dave Pope, a retired graphic designer, led the movement and carried the complaints to the Seattle City Council.

The council agreed with the locals, unleashing another round of legal efforts by the landowners to appeal the council’s intent to either negotiate or use eminent domain powers to acquire the property.

After years of appeals, the men ultimately settled on a figure –$435,798 for Holmquist and $364,202 for Kaseburg. “It was a substantial amount,” Holmquist told the newspaper.

Iran says it will respond ‘firmly’ to US aggression amid retaliatory cyberattack, aborted military strike

Iran cautioned Saturday that it will “firmly” respond to any aggression or threat by the U.S., a warning that comes after President Trump aborted a military attack while a U.S. cyber team carried out a retaliatory digital strike against the regime.

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi reiterated the regime’s position that it will confront any threats by the U.S. over the shooting down of an unmanned U.S. Navy drone by the Islamic Republic.

US NAVY DRONE SHOT DOWN BY IRANIAN MISSILE OVER STRAIT OF HORMUZ IN ‘UNPROVOKED ATTACK,’ CENTRAL COMMAND SAYS

“Regardless of any decision they (U.S. officials) make… we will not allow any of Iran’s borders to be violated. Iran will firmly confront any aggression or threat by America,” he said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The comment comes in the wake of heightened tensions in the region that put Washington and Tehran on the brink of a war.

Trump said Friday that he halted the strike just 10 minutes prior because of the projected casualty loss, saying that it wasn’t a “proportionate” response to Iran previously shooting down an American military drone.

“10 minutes before the strike I stopped it, not … proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone. I am in no hurry, our Military is rebuilt, new, and ready to go, by far the best in the world,” he wrote in a tweet, but added that the U.S. was “cocked & loaded to retaliate.”

Iran claimed the U.S. drone on Thursday was over Iranian airspace when it was shot down – but American officials stated unequivocally the incident occurred in international airspace.

State Department officials also decried “pure Iranian propaganda” reports – based solely on the Iranians’ comments – that claim Trump warned Tehran in a message through Oman that a U.S. attack on Iran was imminent,

“Reports that a message was passed last night to the Iranians via an Omani back channel are completely false. These reports are pure Iranian propaganda. #Iran needs to meet our diplomacy with diplomacy,” State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus wrote in a tweet.

TRUMP CONFIRMS HE CALLED OFF RETALIATORY IRAN ATTACK ‘10 MINUTES BEFORE THE STRIKE’

But while the military air strike was called off, U.S. Cyber Command launched a digital strike against an Iranian spy group on Thursday, Yahoo News reported.

The spy group is close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, a terrorist-designated entity, and reportedly supported the limpet mine attacks on two oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Additional details about the digital response weren’t available, though private American cyber groups have said that Iranian state-sponsored hackers are targeting U.S. organizations, adding Iran’s response against the U.S. will likely be executed in cyberspace.

“The question is whether or not this is intelligence collection associated with the conflict, or if it is something more aggressive, like laying the groundwork for a destructive or disruptive attack,” John Hultquist, director of intelligence analysis at cybersecurity company FireEye Inc., told the Wall Street Journal.

The U.S.-Iran confrontation has been boiling since Trump backed out of the Obama-era nuclear deal in May 2018.

But the tensions reached a fever pitch in recent weeks after two oil tankers were attacked, supposedly by the Iranian forces as the regime flexes its muscles over tough sanctions that caused its currency to drop by about 60 percent in 12 months while food and drug prices are up 40 and 60 percent, respectively.

Iran is currently also seeking to renegotiate the nuclear deal with European countries, arguing that the deal must be improved amid U.S. sanctions or the regime will begin enriching uranium up to 20 percent – just a step below weapons-grade level.

British judge orders disabled 22-week pregnant woman to have abortion

A British judge ordered Friday that an abortion be performed on a mentally disabled woman who is 22 weeks pregnant, despite objections from the woman and her mother.

Justice Nathalie Lieven admits in the ruling of the “heartbreaking” case that it’s an “immense intrusion” to order the abortion against the woman’s will, but argued that it’s in the best interest of the woman.

MISSOURI’S LONE ABORTION CLINIC LOSES LICENSE TO PERFORM PROCEDURE

“I am acutely conscious of the fact that for the State to order a woman to have a termination where it appears that she doesn’t want it is an immense intrusion,” the justice said. “I have to operate in [her] best interests, not on society’s views of termination.”

The unnamed woman, a Roman Catholic, reportedly has developmental disabilities and the mental age of a 6- to 9-year-old. She has been described as being in her 20s and is in the care of an NHS trust, as part of the country’s National Health Service.

The woman’s mother, a former midwife, opposes the abortion procedure and told the court that she could take care of the child with the support from the daughter, Sky News reported.

A social worker who works with the woman also said the pregnancy should not be terminated.

But the judge said the woman didn’t have the mental capacity to make her own decisions even it look like she wanted to continue the pregnancy.

“I think she would like to have a baby in the same way she would like to have a nice doll.”

“I think she would like to have a baby in the same way she would like to have a nice doll,” she said, pointing out that she didn’t fully comprehend what having a baby entails.

She added that having a child would be more traumatic for the woman than aborting it, as she wouldn’t be able to take care of the child due to the risk posed by her mental health problems and it would have to be put in a foster care.

“Pregnancy, although real to her, doesn’t have a baby outside her body she can touch,” Lieven added.

Police are reportedly investigating how the pregnancy happened in the first place.

AOC’s Dem rival, Joe Crowley, now backing candidate against hers in New York DA race

Former U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley may get his revenge by proxy on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a district attorney race — after being embarrassingly dethroned last year.

Crowley, previously a top Democrat whose years-long political career was derailed by the self-described Democratic Socialist, is opposing Ocasio-Cortez’s growing influence in New York state politics.

AOC ATTACK GROUP TARGETS TOP DEM — WHO VOTED WITH HER 96% OF THE TIME BUT CRITICIZED OMAR

He’s helping raise money for Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, a district attorney candidate who’s competing against public defender Tiffany Cabán, the candidate backed by Ocasio-Cortez, Politico reported.

“Melinda and I both grew up here, went to school here, have sung together at countless community parties here, and most importantly have dedicated our careers to improving the lives of the people who call this wonderful borough home,” Crowley wrote in the fundraiser email, asking for donations of $50 to $200.

“For as long as I’ve known Melinda, she’s always shared my commitment to making Queens a safer, more just place for our families, and I know she’ll do the same from the DA’s office.”

Katz is among the leading candidates in the seven-way Democratic primary to fill the seat that became vacant after DA Richard Brown died last month.

OCASIO-CORTEZ TELLS WHITE HOUSE TO ‘PUT DOWN ITS SABER,’ AND NEGOTIATE WITH IRAN

But Cabán is mounting a serious challenge as her progressive platform attracted the support not only from Ocasio-Cortez, but also from Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

This prompted Queens Democratic Party leader Greg Meeks to slam both Warren and Sanders, though he omitted Ocasio-Cortez’s backing of Cabán.

“I don’t know who they spoke with, but clearly they did not speak with the elected officials of Queens County, or the people who elected them,” Meeks said in a statement, the New York Post reported.

“African-Americans have the largest stake in this DA race … Yet Warren and Sanders saw fit to endorse without even considering what African-Americans thought.”

The DA race showdown shows the growing influence of Ocasio-Cortez in New York.

For example, Justice Democrats, a group closely aligned with the freshman Democrat, is working to unseat Rep. Eliot Engel, a 30-year Democratic New York congressman who called out Rep. Ilhan Omar over anti-Semitism.

Engel, a hawkish Democrat who co-sponsored a Medicare-for-all plan, had joined Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive colleagues in introducing the Green New Deal, a radical overhaul of the economy in a bid to combat climate change. He has also voted with Ocasio-Cortez 96 percent of the time so far.

AOC attack group targets top Dem — who voted with her 96% of the time but criticized Omar

A far-left group backed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is supporting a political newcomer to unseat a 30-year Democratic New York congressman who called out Rep. Ilhan Omar over anti-Semitism.

Justice Democrats, a group that initially recruited Ocasio-Cortez to run against former Rep. Joe Crowley, is targeting Rep. Eliot Engel.

REP. COLLINS ON AOC’S ‘APPALLING’ CRITICISM OF BORDER FACILITIES: IT’S EITHER ‘BLISSFUL IGNORANCE’ OR ANTI-SEMITISM

The candidacy of Jamaal Bowman, a 43-year-old public middle school teacher, was put forward by Justice Democrats in a continued effort to elect more progressive Democrats to Congress, the New York Times reported.

Yet Engel isn’t the moderate Democrat that his critics claim to be. He co-sponsored a Medicare-for-all plan and even joined Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive colleagues in introducing the Green New Deal, a radical overhaul of the economy in a bid to combat climate change. He has also voted with Ocasio-Cortez 96 percent of the time so far.

The source of frustration for the progressive is likely due to Engel’s rather hawkish views on foreign policy, including voting for the Iraq War in 2002, though he criticized the war in later years.

Engel, who is Jewish, has also angered far-left block of the party after he openly criticized Omar after the Minnesota Democrat said that “the political influence in this country that says it is OK to push for allegiance to a foreign country,” referring to Israel, which many perceived as anti-Semitic comments.

SENATE EXPRESSLY CONDEMNS ANTI-SEMITISM, AFTER DEMOCRAT-LED HOUSE ‘CAN’T BRING ITSELF’ TO DO THE SAME

In a fiery statement back in March, Engel said that though he welcomes debate about policy, “it’s unacceptable and deeply offensive to call into question the loyalty of fellow American citizens because of their political views, including support for the U.S.-Israel relationship.”

“We all take the same oath. Worse, Representative Omar’s comments leveled that charge by invoking a vile anti-Semitic slur,” he added.

“We all take the same oath. Worse, Representative Omar’s comments leveled that charge by invoking a vile anti-Semitic slur.”

— Rep. Eliot Engel

Yet Engel challenger’s campaign appears to be taking off, already racking up prominent support from progressives.

“An education warrior, looks promising!” Cynthia Nixon, the former “Sex and the City” star and failed New York gubernatorial candidate, wrote in a tweet Tuesday.

“I’m supporting Jamaal Bowman for Congress in New York’s 16th Congressional District. He’s a lifelong educator and school principal in the Bronx. His experience, his values, and his policy ideas are what we need,” activist Shaun King tweeted.

Bowman released his first video Monday, where he speaks about his background and the news to build “new America.”

“It’s time to build a new America ― a new America that taps into its unlimited potential, a new America that leverages the brilliance of children and people from diverse backgrounds,” he said. “That’s the America I want to be a part of, the America I want for my children and grandchildren.”

Ocasio-Cortez has been on the board of Justice Democrats before she was de-listed back in March following legal and ethical questions about her affiliation with the group. Her Financial Disclosure form submitted last month still lists her as a director of the organization.

US squadron of F-15E fighters arrive in UAE amid Iran tensions

A squadron of American F-15E Strike Eagles arrived in United Arab Emirates on Thursday as part of reinforcements against the Iranian threat as announced last month by the Pentagon.

President Trump announced the additional military presence in the Middle East last month, saying additional 1,500 troops will be sent together with a squadron of U.S. Air Force jets.

The arrival of the U.S. jets on Thursday coincided with an attack on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, an attack that the U.S. says was perpetrated by the Iranian regime.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iran was responsible for the “blatant assault” on oil tankers, an assessment he based on “intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication.”

President Trump, meanwhile, told “Fox and Friends” Friday that the attack had “Iran written all over it.’

“Iran did do it and you know they did it because you saw the boat,” he said, before pointing to the video showing the Iranians removing the unexploded mine. “They’re a nation of terror and they’ve changed a lot since I’ve been president, I can tell you,” he added.

U.S. officials also released a video on Friday supposedly showing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the vessels.

The black-and-white footage, as well as still photos released by the U.S. military’s Central Command on Friday, appeared to show the limpet mine on the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous, before a Revolutionary Guard patrol boat pulled alongside the ship and removed the mine, Central Command spokesman Capt. Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said he had also approved a request from CENTCOM to send approximately 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East “to address air, naval, and ground-based threats” in the region.

None of the announced 1,000 troops are U.S. Army or Marine Corps infantry or U.S. Special Operations Forces, according to U.S. officials. All the additional troops are support troops for the fighter squadrons currently deployed, the Patriot anti-aircraft missile batteries and engineers.

A Democrat mayor of a Texas town bordering Mexico slammed the federal government and lawmakers, saying “we are sick and tired of the deaf ears” for failing to protect towns like his from illegal immigration.

Bruno Lozano, the mayor of Del Rio, Texas, made his remarks during a meeting with Republican Sen. John Cornyn’s staffers regarding asylum-seekers and immigration.

GUATEMALAN MIGRANTS VOW TO KEEP TRYING TO REACH US BORDER AFTER MEXICO RAMPS UP PRESSURE

The mayor criticized the government and called for a more active approach in combatting illegal immigration that he says overrun his town, urging lawmakers to actually visit the border towns to see the situation.

“They need to see firsthand what’s going on. They need to understand the frustrations that the commissioners, or that the city council, the school board, the hospital officials are managing [and] having to deal with,” Lozano said.

“We’re frustrated. We’re extremely frustrated,” he continued. “Our priorities on the city council are our streets, are our parks, are the economy, are the drive of the community and the places of worship and the places to have leisure activities. It is not the priority to solve immigration.”

The Democrat added that it’s unfair to ask small towns to handle issues related to asylum seekers and immigration, saying this is where the federal government needs to step up.

“It is not our purview; it is not our jurisdiction. It is your job to ensure that you convey the frustration that I share with you all to ensure that our representatives at the federal level are hearing it,” he said. “It’s falling on deaf ears, and we are tired of it. Lozano’s comments follow the news earlier this month that border patrol have seen a “dramatic rise” in the African migrants being detained at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection said that since May 30, over 500 people from African countries had been arrested by the agency in Del Rio Sector in Texas.

LaVar Ball has been slammed for making an “inappropriate” remark to a female ESPN host on Monday, with the network officially condemning him.

Ball made the comments during ESPN’s “First Take” on Monday morning when talking about his son, Lonzo Ball, who was part of the trade deal that reportedly brought Anthony Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans to the Los Angeles Lakers.

LAVAR BALL VOWS LAKERS WILL ‘NEVER WIN ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP’ AFTER TEAM REPORTEDLY TRADES HIS SON

Molly Qerim, the host, tried to get the show back on the track after Ball began directing the show, saying “LaVar, can I switch gears with you because I have a question here.”

“You can switch gears with me anytime,” Ball responded during the live interview, prompting outcry on social media.

At the end of the show, Qerim supposedly alluded to the comments made by Ball, saying “If anyone’s calling HR today, it’s me.”

The ESPN released a statement condemning the comments made by Ball and said he was made aware of that.

“LaVar Ball’s comment to Molly Qerim Rose was completely inappropriate and we made him aware of that,” the statement read, according to Larry Brown Sports.

LEBRON JAMES LEADS LOS ANGELES LAKERS’ REACTIONS TO REPORTED ANTHONY DAVIS TRADE

Jemele Hill, writer for the Atlantic magazine who left the network last year following controversial comments about President Trump, praised the host for handling the loudmouth live on air but suggested ESPN should stop putting Ball on air.

“Kudos to Molly Querim for the professional way she handled LaVar Ball after his inappropriate comment. Maybe ESPN will have finally learned its lesson about putting him on TV,” she wrote.

Ball fired back against criticism, releasing a statement insisting that he wasn’t trying to be inappropriate and the meaning of his comment was misrepresented.

“[LaVar] was asked if he wanted to switch gears, in his mind switching gears was ‘changing the subject anytime’ and he said, ‘yes, you can switch gears with me anytime.’ At NO time was that intended or meant to be sexual in nature,” the statement read, TMZ reported.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg wins ‘best real-life hero’ during MTV award ceremony

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg won best real-life hero award during MTV Movie and TV awards on Monday.

The award ceremony, where fans voting online pick winners who then get trophies shaped as popcorn, focused on the positive messages of empowerment.

Ginsburg, the 86-year-old liberal judge on the High Court, affirmed her celebrity and icon status that night after getting more votes than tennis star Serena Williams, WWE’s Roman Reigns and others runners up. She didn’t attend the ceremony in Santa Monica.

A documentary about Ginsburg titled “RGB” was also nominated in the “Best Fight” category for its “Ruth Bader Ginsburg vs. Inequality” fight. But it was Brie Larson who ultimately took the award home for her battle against Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan) in “Captain Marvel.”

Superhero blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame” was the ultimate winner at the ceremony, winning three awards, including best movie, best villain and best hero.

“Game of Thrones” was picked as the best TV show despite the mixed reviews the final season of the show received. Actress Elisabeth Moss, the lead of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” was given an award for the best performance in a TV show.

The award ceremony also awarded more consequential documentaries, including “Surviving R. Kelly,” which won the best documentary award, that features multiple women speaking on camera describing what they claim was years of sexual and emotional abuse by R&B star R. Kelly.

Amanda Knox sobs during speech on return to Italy, accuses media of building false story

Amanda Knox broke down in tears during a criminal justice festival in Italy on Saturday as she accused the media of depicting her as guilty, despite her proven innocence.

Her appearance at a panel discussion titled “Trial by Media” marks the first time she’s been to Italy since being cleared in 2011 of the slaying of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher.

“I’m afraid today. Now, I’m afraid of being harassed, mocked, stuck, and I’m afraid that new accusations will be addressed to me just because I come here to say my version of the facts. But above all, I fear I will lack the courage,” she said.

Struggling to contain her tears, she said the media depicted her “as cunning, psychopath, drugged wh—. Guilty” and fabricated “false and baseless story, which fueled people’s fantasies.”

Her appearance at the festival was criticized by the lawyer for Kercher’s family, who said Knox’s invitation to the Italian Criminal Justice Festival was “inappropriate” and “a mistake,” adding that “lawyers for both parts should have been involved.”

During the panel, Knox admitted that she remains a controversial figure even though she was cleared of the murder charges.

“I know that despite my acquittal issued by the Court of Cassation, I remain a controversial figure in the presence of public opinion, above all and especially here in Italy,” she said.

“A lot of people think I’m crazy to come here. I was told that I was not safe, that I will be attacked in the streets, that I will be falsely accused and sent back to prison and that even if I return to Seattle, it will have been all in vain, it will not have been useful to anything.”

AMANDA KNOX TO RETURN TO ITALY FOR 1ST TIME SINCE ACQUITTAL FOR ‘TRIAL BY MEDIA’ EVENT

The brutal 2007 slaying of the British woman, whose body was found under a blanket in her locked room with her throat slit, attracted international attention especially after Knox became the target of the accusations.

Knox was definitively acquitted by Italy’s highest court in 2015, following a series of flip-flop rulings by the courts, including a lower court conviction, with a 26-year prison sentence, that was overruled in 2011.

She spent in total four years in jail, including during the investigation, before her 2011 acquittal freed her to return to her native Seattle, where she has lived since.

Rudy Guede, an immigrant from the Ivory Coast, is serving a 16-year sentence for Kercher’s murder.
