Iowa runner, 26, dies near finish line of 12 mile race, two weeks after coming back from Mt. Everest

An Iowa man died during a 20K race just two weeks after traveling to Nepal to Mt. Everest, but medical examiners say the cause of his death wasn’t the medications he had taken to prepare for the journey.

Chase Flack, 26, suffered cardiac arrest in the final stretch of the 12.4-mile race in Des Moines earlier this month, when both he and his brother Clint dared each other to sprint the remaining distance.

NEW ‘WINDOW INTO THE PLANET’ INSTALLED IN MOUNT EVEREST’S ‘DEATH ZONE’

The man then collapsed, prompting medics to rush to the scene in a bid to save his life, but in the end they couldn’t save him, according to the Runner’s World magazine.

It remains unclear what caused the cardiac arrest.

Flack traveled to Mt. Everest two weeks before the race, yet he was running six miles per day in preparation for the race.

“After 8 days of trekking we conquered Mt Everst Base camp (17,600ft)! These guys stay here for around 2 months acclimating from base camp to camp 4. After they pay their $50,000 park fee and the weather is perfect it only takes 4 days to summit the highest point in the world!” he wrote in a post on Facebook on May 19.

Medical examiners also ruled out that the medications he used to prepare for the trip was the cause of his death, according to the man’s father.

CLEVELAND MARATHON RUNNER, 22, DIES AFTER COLLAPSE NEAR FINISH LINE

“Whatever he did, he did 110 percent,” Craig Flack told the outlet. “He went to the Mt. Everest base camp this year. Would he have gone to the top next year? Probably. That’s how he did life.”

The death shocked the local community in Jefferson, Iowa, where people flooded a funeral service in the Greene County Middle School gymnasium.

Over 1,000 people attended the visitation on June 6, and 800 attended the funeral service in the Greene County Middle School gymnasium the next day, the Runner’s World reported.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw dings ex-Obama aide Ben Rhodes for doubting US link of Iran to tanker attack

Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Texas slammed former top Obama adviser Ben Rhodes for questioning U.S. claims that Iran attacked oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and downplayed the threat from the regime.

Rhodes, a leading figure within the Obama administration who pushed for the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, suggested the U.S. official assessment of the tanker attacks shouldn’t be taken for granted, saying only an international investigation can get to the bottom of the incident.

“This definitely feels like the kind of incident where you’d want an international investigation to establish what happened. Huge risk of escalation,” Rhodes said in a tweet.

EUROPEANS SKEPTICAL OF TRUMP’S CLAIM THAT IRAN TO BLAME IN TANKER ATTACK

This prompted a stark rebuttal from Crenshaw, the freshman congressman and former U.S. Navy SEAL officer, who blasted Rhodes for downplaying the danger posed by the Iranian regime and doubting the intelligence community.

“So, do or don’t believe the Intel community? And you’re not really a trusted source to weigh in on Iran,” Crenshaw wrote in a tweet. “You sold the public the falsehood of a moderating Iranian regime – using your media ‘echo chamber’ (your words)- & ignoring the true danger Iran presents in the region.”

“I’ve been watching for years as Iran moves weapons to proxies around the region, looking for opportunities to destabilize & wreak havoc, and then claim innocence. This is not new. And the Administration is right to strengthen our regional presence as a deterrence,” Crenshaw added.

Crenshaw refers to Rhodes’ now-infamous comments that the administration’s foreign policy team built an “echo chamber” of experts to help sell the controversial Iran nuclear deal.

“We created an echo chamber,” Rhodes told the New York Times Magazine in 2016 when asked about arms-control experts that appeared at think tanks and were then used as sources for hundreds of reporters – whom the article described as “clueless.”

Of those experts, Rhodes said: “They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say.”

TANKER CREW DETAINED BY IRAN AFTER FIRST BEING RESCUED BY ANOTHER VESSEL: US OFFICIALS

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has blamed Iran for the “blatant assault” on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman earlier Thursday.

In a news conference, Pompeo said: “This assessment is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication.”

He charged that Iran was working to disrupt the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz and this is a deliberate part of a campaign to escalate tension, adding that the U.S. would defend its forces and interests in the region, although he did not elaborate.

U.S. officials released a video Friday supposedly showing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the vessels.

The black-and-white footage, as well as still photos released by the U.S. military’s Central Command on Friday, appeared to show the limpet mine on the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous, before a Revolutionary Guard patrol boat pulled alongside the ship and removed the mine, Central Command spokesman Capt. Gulf tanker attack: Iran has form for using clingy, covert ‘limpet mines’ which instantly disable vessels

The U.S. blamed Iran for the attacks on oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, releasing a video Friday supposedly showing Iran’s Revolutionary Guard removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the vessels.

A Revolutionary Guard patrol boat pulled alongside the ship and removed the mine, Central Command spokesman Capt. Bill Urban said.

At least one other mine attached to the tanker’s hull detonated, causing the blast near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key route for oil shipments in the region.

But what are the so-called “limpet mines”?

IRANIAN VESSEL REMOVED UNEXPLODED MINE FROM STRICKEN OIL TANKER IN GULF OF OMAN, US OFFICIALS SAY

The mines got the name from the real limpets, small sea snails that easily cling to hard surfaces and rocks.

The weapon was first developed by the British during World War 2 and is often used in covert action in order to damage ships because they are easily attachable.

There are certain variations, with some detonated by a time fuse while other explode only after the vessel to which the mine is attached travels a specific distance.

In most cases, the mines are magnetic and are easily attachable to the hulls of a ship. They normally just disable rather than sink a vessel.

This wouldn’t the first time Iran used the mines to attack oil tankers. In the 1980s, the “Tanker War” erupted in the midst of the eight-year conflict between Iran and Iraq, threatening to disrupt the global oil supply.

Both countries back then attacked each other oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, with Iran using the limpet mines to cause damage. The conflict prompted then-President Ronald Reagan to intervene and provide protection in the Strait of Hormuz for certain tankers to ensure steady supply of oil.

TRUMP WARNS IRAN OVER TANKER ATTACK: ‘WE DON’T TAKE IT LIGHTLY’

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other U.S. officials suggested the use of mines in the incident implicates Iran because the limpet mines were used in the May attack on four oil tankers near Emirati port of Fujairah.

“This assessment is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication,” Pompeo said during a press conference on Thursday.

A doctored video of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is being circulated amid criticism that the tech giant isn’t doing enough to combat disinformation.

A short clip posted on Instagram, a platform owned by Facebook, supposedly shows Zuckerberg speaking directly into the camera and boasting of his company’s supposed control of people’s data.

“Imagine this for a second: one man, with total control of billions of people’s stolen data, all their secrets, their lives, their futures,” he appears to say, before referring to a fictional evil organization in the James Bond movie series. “I owe it all to Spectre. Spectre showed me that whoever controls the data controls the future.”

FACEBOOK IGNORES HILLARY CLINTON, NANCY PELOSI AMID GROWING BACKLASH OVER DOCTORED VIDEO

The existence of the so-called “deepfake” video of Zuckerberg was first reported by VICE. It comes amid a controversy over a doctored video of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that made her appear as if she was drunkenly slurring her speech.

Artists Bill Powers and Daniel Howe apparently created the video using artificial intelligence technology that allows to create hardly distinguishable fake content. The clip was likely created as a test for Facebook rather than a genuine attempt at deceiving people.

A spokeswoman for Instagram insisted that the fake video of Zuckerberg is handled the same way as the fake video of Pelosi and other misinformation.

“If third-party fact checkers mark it as false, we will filter it from Instagram’s recommendation surfaces like Explore and hashtag pages,” Stephanie Otway, a spokeswoman for the company, told the New York Times.

DAILY BEAST ACCUSED OF ‘DOXXING’ ALLEGED CREATOR OF ‘DRUNK PELOSI’ VIDEO

Facebook refusal to take down the Pelosi video prompted outcry among prominent Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, who said the video was “sexist trash.”

Pelosi, meanwhile, said she’s no longer giving Facebook the benefit of doubt that it is “unwittingly” spreading false information. She said Facebook is serving an accomplice and enabler of false information and Russian elections interference.

But Facebook’s Head of Product Policy and Counterterrorism Monika Bickert said that users are being told that the video is false when they view or share it.

The company does not prohibit false information from being shared on its service. Instead, the company says it “downranks” such material to make it less prominent in people’s news feeds and more difficult to find. It also employs outside fact-checkers to determine the veracity of questionable material. It includes such fact checks around the disputed articles and videos but does not directly label them as false.

White yoga teacher holding class for white people to learn how white supremacy is in their ‘body, mind and heart’

A white Seattle yoga instructor is holding a class geared exclusively towards white people to teach how white supremacy is prevalent in their “body, mind and heart.”

Laura Humpf, a 39-year-old yoga teacher since 2004, publicized an “Undoing Whiteness” yoga class this spring in which white people would learn to “unpack the harmful ways white supremacy is embedded” in the society and how they continue to perpetuate it.

AMERICANS WHO PRACTICE YOGA CONTRIBUTE TO WHITE SUPREMACY, MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR CLAIMS

“I do stand behind white people needing to talk to other white people on how to undo whiteness. Can I keep refining it and doing it differently and better? Yeah, and I will forever and ever. But I believe in this space as one tool,” she told the Seattle Times.

“I do stand behind white people needing to talk to other white people on how to undo whiteness. Can I keep refining it and doing it differently and better? Yeah, and I will forever and ever. But I believe in this space as one tool.”

— Laura Humpf

She added that her class includes yoga postures and readings from a book aimed at helping white people to deal with race-based conversations.

The inspiration for the new classes came after noticing how white people appeared in yoga spaces “in racist ways.”

“I was seeing white people show up in yoga spaces in racist ways,” Humpf told the Times, pointing to white yoga instructors who apparently made racially-charged jokes, as well as saying “all lives mattered in yoga, so why see color.”

She also said an Indian meditation master was controversially removed from the Northwest Yoga Conference.

‘WHITE RACISM’ COURSE AT FLORIDA UNIVERSITY TEACHES THAT AMERICA IS ‘WHITE SUPREMACIST SOCIETY’

Her class tries to neutralize defensiveness, perfectionism and the “white savior complex” as participants try to physically interpret words such as “oppression” and “liberation.”

“I was seeing white people show up in yoga spaces in racist ways.”

— Laura Humpf

Multiple people, including local radio hosts, have already mocked Humpf over the class, especially for gearing it towards exclusively for white people, according to the Times.

This also isn’t the first time Humpf’s yoga classes have come under fire. Four years ago, she was criticized for discrimination after organizing a class for only people of color only while excluding white people. Due to the backlash, she canceled the classes.

She told the newspaper that her class didn’t discriminate and was just a practice of voluntarily congregating by race to dismantle white supremacy.

Despite the backlash, Humpf said she will continue moving with the new class.

“The truth is that we all are one. There’s a divinity that connects us as human beings. But the reality is that we’re in different bodies so we experience the world in very different ways.”

West Point cadet killed in vehicle accident identified as exemplary wrestler from New Jersey studying law

The 22-year-old West Point cadet killed on Thursday morning after a multi-vehicle accident near the U.S. Military Academy was identified on Friday as Christopher J. Morgan of West Orange, New Jersey.

The cadet died at the scene after a 5-ton truck with 20 cadets and some U.S. Army soldiers aboard overturned during summer training near the Camp Natural Bridge facility in upstate New York.

Nineteen other cadets and two soldiers operating the vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. All had been treated and released by Friday.

“Cadet Morgan was a valued member of the Corps of Cadets and will be missed by all. The entire community is ensuring that our cadets are being cared for physically, emotionally, and spiritually,” Lt. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, West Point superintendent, said in a statement on Friday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Morgan family.”

It remains unclear what caused the crash. The investigation will include a probe by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, a review by a safety team from Alabama’s Fort Rucker. The New York State Police will help to re-create the scene.

Trade union holds up Silicon Valley residential project over potential threat to birds

A California trade union is seeking to block a major residential construction project in the heart of housing-starved Silicon Valley, claiming there will be a bloodbath of birds due to the proposed building’s reflective windows.

The Laborers International Union of North America (LIUNA), which represents construction workers in Sunnyvale — a city of about 140,000 residents between Stanford University and downtown San Jose — has sued the city and its council over the project.

SOME SAN FRANCISCANS NOW LIVING ON THE BAY AS HOUSING CRUNCH SENDS THEM TO BOATS, BARGES

The union claims that the approved 1,051-unit residential project, sponsored by the Irvine Company, may cause permanent damage to the environment and thus must be scrapped, Reason magazine reported.

The project would tear down office buildings in an industrial area and instead build apartments and townhouses, providing desperately needed affordable housing in the area. More than half the units would also be rented at below-market prices to people on lower incomes.

But the union’s lawsuit says that unless additional environmental review is conducted, the project will cause damage to residents and wildlife. The lawsuit notes that birds will be killed as the proposed project features reflective windows.

SAN FRANCISCO TO FORCE TREATMENT FOR MENTALLY ILL DRUG ADDICTS AMID CRITICISM PLAN VIOLATES CIVIL RIGHTS

According to the outlet, the trade union is using the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), a law mandating government agencies to study potential environmental impacts, to disrupt the project. Rather than protecting the environment, the decades-old law has been used by interested groups in the past to ensure unwanted projects don’t get off the ground.

The trade union’s chapter in Los Angeles is even accused of precisely that – filing frivolous CEQA complaints to a building project to ensure the company in charge of it hires all-union labor. The developer, Icon, says the union’s actions violate federal racketeering laws, according to the outlet.

The Sunnyvale union says that more than 500 birds would die by flying into the project’s reflective windows, while the residents’ cats could also increase this number even further, causing serious environmental damage.

It remains unclear whether the city will stave off the legal challenge. The project could be delayed months or even years before the actual construction begins.

Ilhan Omar slammed for blaming NRA for Virginia shooting that left 12 people dead

National Rifle Association (NRA) spokeswoman Dana Loesch ripped Rep. Ilhan Omar after she blamed the gun rights group for the deaths inside a Virginia Beach municipal building on Friday.

The embattled Minnesota Democrat took a swipe at the NRA just hours after a disgruntled city employee went on a shooting spree that left 12 people dead and four more injured.

AT LEAST 12 DEATHS AND SEVERAL INJURIES AT VIRGINIA BEACH MUNICIPAL COMPLEX, POLICE SAY; SHOOTER ALSO DEAD: REPORTS

“I am outraged and heartbroken,” she wrote in a tweet. “How much longer will we ignore the pain of our communities? We need to immediately confront the power of the NRA and end the epidemic of gun violence in this country.”

DeWayne Craddock, the suspected shooter, died in a gunfight with police officers. He was a veteran employee of the Public Utilities Department who made multiple legal firearm purchases, including for a handgun and rifle, in recent weeks, the Wall Street Journal reported.

A police officer was also wounded, but was saved by his bullet-proof vest. The police didn’t reveal the motive for the shooting.

Omar’s comment about the NRA prompted the group’s spokeswoman to question how it was related.

“This was a heinous tragedy,” Loesch wrote in a tweet. “Your remarks move me to ask: What do 5 million members of the NRA have to do with this man’s crime? Was this man a card-carrying member? His purchases were legal, whose fault is that? Does he bear any blame at all? Serious questions.”

The Minnesota Democrat has long been opposed to the NRA, often decrying the supposed influence of the group on the gun control debate in the country.

After the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida, Omar went to Twitter to decry the NRA as “the true enemy.”

“Prayers and condolences won’t keep our kids safe, sensible #GunLaws will. It’s time for you and Republicans to put the safety of Americans first and seek freedom from the NRA,” she wrote. “They are the true enemy!”

Abortion seekers welcome in California, governor says, as pro-life measures gain elsewhere in US

Gov. Gavin Newsom has a message for women who want an abortion but live in states that have enacted strict pro-life measures: Come to California.

Newsom released a proclamation Friday touting his state’s easy access to abortion, including the use of state funds for ending pregnancies under subsidized health insurance plans for disadvantaged people while U.S. law bans states from using federal money for the same purpose.

RUSH LIMBAUGH UNLOADS ON DISNEY, SAYS IT’S HYPOCRITICAL ABOUT GEORGIA ABORTION LAW

“California will continue to uphold women’s equality and liberty by protecting their reproductive freedom, educating Californians about their rights to reproductive freedom, welcoming women to California to fully exercise their reproductive rights, and acting as a model for other states that want to ensure full reproductive freedom for women,” Newsom said, according to the Fresno Bee.

The move came after a number of states — including Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi and Georgia — passed pro-life measures that either severely restrict or ban abortion after six weeks.

The Alabama abortion law particularly prompted an outcry from pro-choice activists because it bans the procedure in nearly all cases, even in the event of rape.

Newsom also joined his fellow Democratic governors in Oregon and Washington and sent a letter urging other states to ramp up abortion protections and access to contraceptives and sex education.

MISSOURI’S LAST ABORTION CLINIC ALLOWED TO STAY OPEN, FOR NOW, IS RIFE WITH ‘TROUBLING’ VIOLATIONS, STATE SAYS

“We’ve been battling an escalating attack on the freedom of women and families to determine their futures,” the governors write, according to the newspaper.

“Newly enacted and clearly unconstitutional laws in a handful of states compel our states to act now to reaffirm longstanding commitments to safeguard the fundamental rights of women.”

The California governor has jumped on the issue as a part of his political campaign for reelection in 2022.

According to the Fresno Bee, Newsom slammed the states with new abortion laws in a video paid for by his re-election campaign and in another announcement urged movie production companies to move to California.

Multiple film production companies and movie stars have since announced they won’t film in states that have passed pro-life measures.
