A “stunning failure”: At least eight prison officials were told never to leave Epstein alone in his cell

Westlake Legal Group Jeffrey-Epstein-mugshot A “stunning failure”: At least eight prison officials were told never to leave Epstein alone in his cell The Blog suicide prison officials mcc hanging epstein eight cellmate bedsheet

There’s probably no degree of incompetence and callousness by prison officials that would convince critics of the system that something unusual happened with Epstein. Taken off suicide watch after a week? Guards not making their half-hourly checks as required, instead literally falling asleep on the job? Epstein being left alone in his cell despite the fact that that’s not supposed to happen to a prisoner who recently tried to kill himself? That’s a lot of failure.

“Yep,” the critics will say. “S.O.P. for the BOP.”

I wonder if this WaPo piece will change their minds. At some point the sheer extent of the failure must begin to look suspicious even to someone who thinks the administration of federal prisons is smoking garbage.

At least eight Bureau of Prisons staffers knew that strict instructions had been given not to leave multimillionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein alone in his cell, yet the order was apparently ignored in the 24 hours leading up to his death, according to people familiar with the matter.

The fact that so many prison officials were aware of the directive — not just low-level correctional officers, but supervisors and managers — has alarmed investigators assessing what so far appears to be a stunning failure to follow instructions, these people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing investigations. They declined to identify the eight…

That instruction was spelled out widely within the chain of command, people familiar with the matter said, and one of the issues investigators are trying to understand better is how so many people could have known of the instruction and still failed to enforce it.

Another noteworthy detail, the first time I’ve seen it reported, about the earlier suicide attempt Epstein made in late July:

In that incident, guards rushed to Epstein’s cell when his cellmate at the time, Nicholas Tartaglione, began yelling, according to people familiar with the matter. Tartaglione told officers he had noticed Epstein with a bedsheet around his neck and appeared to be trying to kill himself, according to people familiar with the incident.

Epstein reportedly accused Tartaglione afterward of having attacked him, but that explanation makes no sense if it was Tartaglione who alerted the guards. To the contrary, that incident would have driven home to MCC staff how important it was for Epstein to have a cellmate at all times. If not for Tartaglione, they might have lost Epstein the first time.

So how’d he end up with no cellmate on the evening of August 9?

WaPo reports that Epstein’s new cellmate was relocated on the very night that he ended up killing himself. With at least eight officials in the know that he was supposed to have a cellmate at every moment, you would think they might at least have compensated by being diligent about their checks that evening, maybe increasing them from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes, say. Instead, supposedly hours passed between look-ins on Epstein.

And so we arrive at the fateful question: Was anyone on staff paid to facilitate this? Did anyone get a deposit into their checking account in exchange for leaving Epstein alone in his cell for a few hours with a bedsheet and no half-hourly checks? Remember, Epstein was reportedly paying protection money to several inmates by having funds added to their accounts in the commissary. He also paid the costs of the police detail that “supervised” him during his now infamous “work release” program as a prisoner in Palm Beach County 10 years ago, the circumstances of which were so relaxed that he allegedly was able to continue preying on young women *while serving a prison sentence.*

The entire story of Jeffrey Epstein’s life was offering people money to do illicit things for him and keep quiet about it, most notably the teenaged girls whom he paid for “massages” before coercing them into sex. Why wouldn’t he have followed the same approach with prison officials, particularly when all he was asking them to do was be their most incompetent selves for a few hours late on a Saturday night? I hope the FBI is combing through every financial account the eight of them have.

Look on the bright side, I guess. At least this is the most depressing Epstein-related story we’ll be asked to endure today. Exit question: Or is it?

Scaramucci “predicts”: By late fall, a “trove” of former Trump cabinet officials will come forward to speak up against him

Westlake Legal Group as-1 Scaramucci “predicts”: By late fall, a “trove” of former Trump cabinet officials will come forward to speak up against him Trump tillerson The Blog scaramucci officials Nikki Haley mattis John Kelly cabinet

Meh, whatever. The only former Trump cabinet officials this guy’s talking to are the voices inside his own h— [record scratch]

Anthony Scaramucci dined with the former U.S ambassador Nikki Haley ten days before publicly withdrawing his support from Donald Trump and warning Republicans the president ‘eventually turns on everyone’.

The former White House aide, 55, was seen ‘in deep discussion’ with Ms Haley at a Harlem restaurant just over a week before he suggested the Republican Party had better find another leader for the 2020 elections…

The pair’s sighting, which was reported by Page Six today, comes after the former White House communications director said Trump was on the verge of a meltdown and told members of the Republican party to consider replacing the president.

Mooch can talk ’til he’s blue in the face, he’ll never recruit Haley to the Trump Alums Against Trump supergroup he’s trying to form. She’s the only former cabinet official I can think of who has a legit shot at the 2024 nomination. She won’t throw that away.

But might John Kelly say something?

Might Kirstjen Nielsen?

Might Rex Tillerson?

Might Gary Cohn?

Might Don McGahn?

Might … James Mattis?

I can see it. Maybe not Mattis and Kelly: I don’t know how well it would sit with former four-star generals to impugn the commander-in-chief’s basic fitness for office. And from what I’ve read, Mattis’s relationship with Trump wasn’t nearly as personally contentious as Kelly’s was. But might the rest of the people I named speak up against POTUS? Sure, it’s conceivable. The difficulty for Scaramucci in convincing them to do so is that they obviously stand to lose more than they stand to gain. Those who are independently wealthy, like Tillerson, Cohn, and Mooch himself, might be free to speak their minds but what do you do if you’re someone like Nielsen, who’s not even 50 years old and has made a career of serving Republican administrations in Washington? If you join Mooch’s team of anti-Trump Avengers, you may never work in GOP politics again — and meanwhile you’d remain a hated figure on the left because of your work implementing Trump’s immigration policies.

Which is why, I take it, Scaramucci has been pressing lately in his media appearances for some sort of path back to respectability for ex-Trumpers willing to turn on POTUS. It’s not just for his own sake that he’s calling for that, I think, it’s for the sake of those like Nielsen who might be gettable in this effort but at last check were boycott targets of the left for their roles in Trump’s administration. If they’re going to make themselves pariahs to most of the right, they need to know they at least won’t be boycotted by the left if they find gainful employment somewhere.

“We recognize that the president is a clear and present danger to the American society, the American culture. There are many people inside the White House and in the Cabinet. I would ask the left to let’s create an off-ramp for those people because when you’re trying to deprogram people from a cult, one of the first things you have to do is allow them to change their mind, and you have to allow them to have the space to change their mind,” Scaramucci said Sunday in a Fox News interview.

He’s offered his own contrition too as part of the deal:

The insta-reaction among righties if he does manage to put together some ex-Trumpers to speak out against POTUS will be “WHO CARES?” but it depends on the nature of the criticism. If the gist of their complaint is that he’s a bad guy and a bully, well, then, yes, who cares? They’re not telling us anything we didn’t know. If the gist, rather, is that they believe Trump is *unstable*, that may do damage. Lots of voters suspect that too but it’s one thing to be a rando watching him rant on the teevee and another to be a former cabinet member who’s interacted with him behind closed doors sharing your experiences with the world.

Remember the splash that mysterious NYT op-ed authored by a member of “the Resistance” inside the administration made last year? This would be an order of magnitude beyond that. The sheer novelty of seeing a group of former cabinet members assembling to warn voters not to reelect their old boss would make it newsy. Nothing anymore short of wars and recessions moves huge numbers of voters in our hyperpolarized age but a gaggle of Trump alumns claiming that they fear for the country if he’s given another four more years might shift a few in Michigan, which could be decisive. I doubt Scaramucci will be able to pull it off but I wouldn’t treat it as a nothingburger if he does.

CNN and Democrats Run Defense for Antifa Again, Label the Attackers “Peaceful” Despite Clear Evidence

Westlake Legal Group Capture-3-620x351 CNN and Democrats Run Defense for Antifa Again, Label the Attackers “Peaceful” Despite Clear Evidence white supremacists republicans Portland Politics Oregon officials Front Page Stories Featured Story donald trump democrats CNN antifa Allow Media Exception

“The most trusted name in news” is back to make you wonder whether or not we should send them screenshots containing the definitions of “trusted” and “news.” The consistent bronze medal finisher of cable news, CNN, seems to think that the violent group “Antifa” is worthy of defense yet again.

As both my colleague Alex Parker and I have written about previously, Antifa showed up in force to oppose Trump supporters at a Portland event over the weekend. Weapons were used by Antifa, including chunks of concrete, hammers, and more to physically attack those they considered to be their opponents. One man was beaten viciously and mocked while his wife attempted to protect him.

The evidence is undeniable. Antifa is a violent group that will gather together hordes of people in order to attack and intimidate those that disagree with them in any capacity.

But to CNN and elected Democrat officials, they are the good guys.

Democratic New Mexico Rep. Deb Haaland appeared on the news network to discuss Antifa in Portland. After briefly discussing a tweet by Trump saying that there is “major consideration” for calling Antifa a terrorist organization and that Portland is being watched closely.

The CNN hostess first said that there is no government agency capable of designating a group as a domestic terrorist organization. This is mostly true, as there is no official list of domestic terrorist organizations, though some government bodies may label certain groups as such. The Obama administration’s DHS suggestively labeled Tea Partiers as potential domestic terrorists at one time.

Haaland was asked to give a reaction to the tweet, and what followed was one of the most nonsensical defenses of a violent group I’ve ever seen.

Haaland began with the typical “orange man white supremacist who incites violence” narrative you hear on repeat lately. This lead into Haaland calling Portland a “progressive city” and that it’s no surprise that Trump would side against the “peaceful protesters working to safeguard their city from domestic terrorism.”

And with that, the interview was quickly over.

Let me break this down. A major media organization just brought on an elected Democrat official who proceeded to call the President a white supremacist and label the group physically attacking people with deadly weapons “peaceful protesters” who are trying to protect a city.

This is absolute lunacy and proof that the left has gone far off the deep end and right into delusion. Trump is not a white supremacist and he’s proven that repeatedly. Antifa is not a peaceful group, and they have proven that repeatedly. Yet here is the established left attempting to paint the entire situation as if they’re angels fighting a great evil.

If you were to strip away the chyrons and cameras and change the expensive outfits to regular street clothes, you would think these women were absolutely insane and not worth listening to. However, because they have a platform supported by millions of dollars, they are going to be taken seriously.

Because of this, the left will only fall deeper into delusion and Antifa will only grow in power and become more dangerous. This is absolutely irresponsible and a very real threat to our society. There’s fake news, and then there’s fake news that foments very real violence.

CNN and the Democrats are engaging in the latter.
