Perhaps the most noxious and useless elements in the so-called profession of journalism are the “fact checkers.” Rather than representing some kind of ombudsman or referee contesting extraordinary claims made by politicians or governments or anyone who wishes to benefit from shading or curving the truth a bit, they have been completely weaponized in the service of the agenda of the Democrat party and whatever Democrat candidate that happens to be running at the moment.

Some, like Snopes, has so thoroughly beclowned itself in its transparent jihad to get a Christian parody site, Babylon Bee, deplatformed that they are probably on the slippery slide to extinction. Anyone quoting Snopes in a not ironic way deserves whatever verbal abuse comes their way. The equally partisan PolitiFact basically has veto power over what content a site, particularly a conservative one such as ours, can put on Facebook without risking the ability to share the material. By way of example, Politifact has fact checked an opinion by Ted Cruz and another opinion by Erick Erickson and a financial statement released by the Clinton Foundation that was used by Sean Davis at The Federalist to make the case that that organization is nothing but a RICO violation. Naturally, because of the politics of the people being fact checked, they were all classified as false. They also gave a “Mostly True” rating to Obama’s “if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor” claim which puts them in the category of being the only person in the English-speaking world who believed that claim. But one of the most notorious of the bunch is the Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler.

Kessler is a blatant partisan who is famous for contorting himself to award a “false” rating to conservatives and Republicans. Even the inoffensive and milquetoast Mitt Romney ran afoul of this intrepid Defender of Truth and received a rating of True but False…this is what happens when you land a telling blow but the Democrats want to dismiss it base on your intentions.

With that in mind, it is obvious that the Bernie Sanders candidacy is not highly favored by the Democrat powers-that-be because, perhaps for the first time, Kessler has actively gone after a Democrat figure using the tactics he has historically reserved for conservatives and Republicans. Here I’m just going to quote liberally from a whinging letter from the “senior adviser” to Bernie 2020 because the tone is as important as the substance.

I am writing in regards to the Washington Post Fact Checker’s Aug. 28 analysis, headlined: “Sanders’s flawed statistic: 500,000 medical bankruptcies a year.” We demand that the Post immediately issue a retraction and inform its readers of this decision.

The overall premise of the piece is absurd. The Post’s Fact Checker issued Senator Sanders “three pinocchios” for accurately citing a peer-reviewed editorial published in the American Journal of Public Health. The Post even notes that the author of the editorial confirmed that Senator Sanders had accurately cited his work.

As Rolling Stone pointed out: “To dole out Pinocchios for a good faith effort to translate public health data into a stump speech is journalistically obtuse.”

Furthermore, the Post’s Fact Checker asserted: “The AJPH editorial did not undergo the same peer-reviewed editing process as a research article.” This is also not true. The Fact Checker has been informed of this error and has thus far refused to correct it.

The give Kessler his due, the AJPH is pretty much a liberal rag where just about anything can be published if you have the correct political spin. I guy I worked with was a co-author on this paper that proved, conclusively, that Americans are healthier than Pakistanis. True peer review would have involved hysterical laughter and bladder, if not bowel, evacuation. Back to the narrative.

On June 27th, the Washington Post published a “fact check” story by Glenn Kessler about Senator Sanders correctly stating that “millions of Americans are forced to work two or three jobs just to survive.” Kessler asserted that the claim was “misleading” even though he admitted “Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that nearly 8 million people hold more than one job.” To be clear: 8 million Americans are accurately described by Senator Sanders as “millions of Americans” — and yet Kessler’s false assertion that this statement of fact was “misleading” was never retracted or corrected by the Washington Post.

Clearly, this is “true but false” and “I don’t like your implications.” And, from a paper that pimped the Occupy Wall Street bullsh** for all that it was worth this and the next fact check are pretty hilarious:

Similarly, on June 28th, the Washington Post published another “fact check” by Mr. Kessler about Senator Sanders correctly stating that three people own more wealth than the bottom half of the country. Kessler acknowledged that Senator Sanders’ statement was “based on numbers that add up.” However, he then asserted that because “people in the bottom half have essentially no wealth” the “comparison is not especially meaningful” — which is not merely subjective and tendentious, but also totally inaccurate. The fact that three people own so much wealth while tens of millions have absolutely no wealth is especially meaningful to working class Americans who are struggling to make ends meet.

The takeaway from this is that Bernie is scaring the right people. I’m not sure whether that would be Warren or Biden (I lean towards Biden because of the DC roots and because Sanders has to be dirtied up on his “truthiness” to enable a tu quoque from Biden’s camp. The second-order takeaway is that fact checking has been thoroughly corrupted and weaponized and now doesn’t serve the purpose of correcting the record or combating lies, it is simply a line of partisan attack designed to render people and arguments illegitimate.

Welcome, Bernie, to what we’ve been dealing with for a couple of decades.

Red State’s Thomas LaDuke wrote last month about the left’s aggressive push to abolish the Electoral College on grounds that it somehow punishes minority voters. The movement was recently amplified in an Instagram Live video done by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as well as tweets she posted claiming black, Latino, and Indian voters were being “disenfranchised” by the Electoral College.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) had the audacity to respond to AOC’s claims at the time:

… which prompted Democrats like MSNBC’s Chris Hayes to make laughable arguments about how “if [the Electoral College] wasn’t specifically in the Constitution for the presidency, it would be unconstitutional”:

And in a lengthy piece were he absurdly argued AOC “understands democracy better than Republicans do” (which she retweeted), New York Times columnist Jamelle Bouie asserted that arguments like Crenshaw’s in favor of the EC are “part and parcel of the drive to make American government a closed domain for a select, privileged few.”

In other words, racism, y’all. Because when all else fails, that is the card Democrats like to play.

In the middle of the Labor Day holiday weekend, Crenshaw clapped back in a video response in which he countered Hayes, Bouie, and other Democrats like AOC on abolishing the EC:

“A Republic is more stable,” Crenshaw said in the video. “It’s also more representative of the entirety of the country.”

He went on to note that a Republic has “institutional checks and balances between the three branches of government and an emphasis on state’s rights, so it’s really difficult to ram through sweeping policy that affects the entirety of the country.”

Crenshaw also stated that “because we have an equally apportioned Senate and Electoral College, it means smaller states have a voice. Smaller, more rural states actually have a voice both in the Congress and when electing our president.”

Watch his full video response below:

He also posted a series of tweets on this topic:

Well done.

Talking to the Left About Gun Control Is a Chump’s Game and We Aren’t Playing

Westlake Legal Group second-amendment-620x349 Talking to the Left About Gun Control Is a Chump’s Game and We Aren’t Playing Universal Background Checks Texas seth aaron ator republicans red flag laws Politics odessa shooting Guns gun control Front Page Stories Featured Story democrats assault weapon ban Allow Media Exception 2A

We don’t know exactly why 36-year-old Seth Aaron Ator went on a shooting rampage in Odessa-Midland, Texas, on Saturday (yes, I wrote his name because I think the whole “don’t publicize their names” craze is juvenile). Perhaps he was in a rage over having been fired from his job as a truck driver only hours before. Who knows. And, absent a seance, probably no one will ever know. What we do know is this. The weapon Ator used was a legal-to-own weapon. His prosecution for a couple of misdemeanors over a decade ago would not have resulted in him being banned from owning a firearm.

Based on those two facts, it is safe to say:

  1. He would have passed a background check.
  2. Red flag laws would not apply.
  3. No conceivable law compatible with the Second Amendment and with basic civil liberties would have prevented Ator from having a firearm.

The incident has some, like the captain of the SS Lollipop, Bill Kristol, beginning to agitate for a ban on modern sporting rifles (see this by Bonchie). In this he joins a chorus of other faux conservatives, like David Frum and Bret Stephens, who aren’t terribly enamored of an armed citizery n the first place, who would willingly negotiate away our rights in order to get the next invitation to the right party or to be allowed to feed at that trough of Pierre Omidyar’s cash for a while longer. (Read my post on why this ban is a ludicrous idea doomed to failure.)

Others, like GOP consultant (need I say more) Scott Jennings, advocate giving the left everything they want because, get this, it’ll own the libs (actual title: How Republicans can ‘own the libs’ on gun control):

If Trump signs a gun reform package [universal background checks, red flag law, and, wait for it, a resolution condemning violence], he’ll have a second feather in his I-did-what-Obama-couldn’t-do cap, alongside criminal justice reform. And he’ll have a great conversation starter for the suburban women who abandoned the GOP in 2018’s midterm.

This is some sad and weak crap. This is a textbook case of tiny little men negotiating away the rights of others trying to placate an opponent that is not making a good faith proposition but rather is set on effectively banning private ownership of firearms.

This is the bottom line. In a nation of well over 300 million people there will be all kinds of aberrant behavior and some of it will lead to the deaths of innocents. The underlying issue is what kind of legal restrictions do we place on several hundred million non-aberrant citizens in order to attempt–let me say that again, attempt–to prevent the one aberrant individual from acting.

Here is where we at RedState will stand on gun control.

If you can show how any law you propose will only effect future mass shooters, we’re willing to talk.
If you want to make it illegal for weapons to be sold privately, nice try.
If you demand limiting the availability of a model of weapon based on extrinsic characteristics, dude, you are a clown.
If you want the same people who get you banned on Twitter deciding if you can own a firearm, we don’t want to hear it (here | here).
If you want gun ownership restricted so you can feel safer, buy an nightlight and comfort blankie, check under your bed for the boogie man and leave us alone.
If you think we owe you an explanation for why we “need” a modern sporting rifle, we have the answer:

We will stand four-square with efforts to improve the accuracy of background checks, consistent with no unreasonable time lag. We will be 100% in favor of vigorous prosecution of felons and other prohibited purchasers when found in possession of a firearm. Beyond that, we are not going to negotiate away any elements of our Constitutional rights–any of them–based on incidents like that in Odessa-Midland or any other place.

Here’s What Rashida Tlaib Blamed a Palestinian Honor Killing On

Westlake Legal Group tlaib2-620x317 Here’s What Rashida Tlaib Blamed a Palestinian Honor Killing On West Bank rashida tlaib Politics Palestinians obfuscation Muslim Israel Islam Honor Killing Gaza Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story democrats

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., questions Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s former lawyer, as he testifies before the House Oversight and Reform Committee, on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

This past Thursday, a Palestinian woman named Israa Ghareb was murdered by her brothers in a hospital bed. This happened in public, with staff knowing exactly what was happening. No one intervened or tried to stop it. No one was arrested or punished. There are reasons for that, which will get into momentarily.

This led Rep. Rashida Tlaib, noted anti-Semite and Palestinian activist, to put out a tweet denouncing the killing. That might typically be seen as a positive if it weren’t so full of obfuscation so as to once again show her lack of ability to condemn the real causes of violence from her people. And to be clear, Tlaib pointedly claims the Palestinians as her people. That is not my assumption simply based on her familial origins.

Here’s the tweet in question.

Ah yes. The real problem here isn’t Palestinian culture, buttressed by centuries of Muslims committing honor killings as part of their religious beliefs. No, it’s nebulous “toxic masculinity.” That’s why Western cultures, which had plenty of “toxic masculinity” throughout the last century, also had epidemics of honor killings, right? Wait, they didn’t? Then perhaps that should point to the fact that manhood and masculinity, though they can be certainly be used in harmful ways toward women, are not the basis of honor killings.

The article she links to is exactly what you’d expect. It’s a pathetic attempt to excuse all responsibility for the killing away from Islam’s cultural rot and toward the a wider enemy which fits into the mold of social justice activism. Here’s how the piece opens.

***Disclaimer: Honor killings are not Muslim and they are not Arab. This is a universal phenomenon which takes places in nearly all corners of the globe, from the United States to Europe. The US president stands accused of rape. Honor killings were legal in Italy until the 1970s and still happen today. Do not use this narrative to reinforce dangerous stereotypes of Arab culture and Islam. Patriarchy exists every where.

This past Thursday, 21 year old Isra Ghareb was murdered in a hospital at the hands of her brothers. The hospital staff did not intervene. One nurse recorded a video from outside of the hospital room from which Isra’s screams were escaping. I’m not here, however, to tell you the details of her story. You can find those through a quick google search. I’m here to tell you why this story matters and what it means.

Isra’s death illustrates an ever-present toxic masculinity and control over women’s bodies and lives.

This is absolute nonsense. Honor killings are not a “universal phenomenon.” They are extremely localized to Islamic societies, as well as some Hindu cultures. That’s not to say that no time throughout history has an honor killing not taken place elsewhere, but to pretend that there’s some kind of equivalency shows a desperate attempt to make excuses for cultures which simply do not measure up in terms of human rights. She bemoans “stereotypes” about Arab culture and Islam while at the same time admitting Palestinian law allows honor killings.

Oh yeah, and this is Israel’s fault of course.

Now, here’s why Isra’s murderers stand to walk away from this untouched by the law. In Palestine, our legal system is the result of a century of occupation and political turmoil. It is a combination of Ottoman, British, Egyptian (in Gaza), Jordanian (in the West bank), and even no system (Area C). Despite various and continued efforts over the last decade, there has been very little reform to this outdated and dysfunctional legal system for two reasons: Israeli military occupation and a corrupt Palestinian Authority both hinder any legal, economic, and social progress.

Get it? It’s Israel’s “occupation” which causes the Palestinians to vote in terrorist governments and enact laws which allow family members to murder their wives and daughters. Makes sense right? Tlaib, by linking to this piece, is endorsing all this insanely obfuscating ideas, which seek to hand wave away the gross problems of the Islamic Palestinian culture.

She can’t even bring herself to label this killing what it was, much less where it took place and under what society’s laws it was allowed.

This is why the Palestinian issue is not going to be solved any time soon. Even their most public “activists,” who constantly claim to be for universal rights, ultimately refuse to condemn the most arcane, inhumane aspects of Palestinian culture. This killing was not the fault of men everywhere via some broad issue of “toxic masculinity.” It was the fault of a specific culture and its interpretation of a religion that consistently leads to the endorsement of this kind of barbarism.

Until that is attacked at its root and the excuses stop, nothing will change. Slapping at Israel, bringing up President Trump, and trying to generalize the problem are not helping Palestinian women. It’s simply providing cover for the real evil at play and allowing it to perpetuate. Tlaib, for whatever reason, is happy to keep doing that though.

Bill Kristol Finally Finds a Group of People He Doesn’t Want to Give Guns To

Bill Kristol has essentially nuked his reputation in the age of Trump. The former conservative icon ran The Weekly Standard into the ground with an irrational level of anti-Trumpism and then found a lefty billionaire to bankroll his now low-trafficked blog “The Bulwark.” Throughout the past three years he’s managed to shift and morph his highly touted “principles” to center on one key idea – oppose Trump at all costs.

That’s not to say Trump is perfect. There are certainly people who manage to have opposition to the president while still maintaining some semblance of their personal integrity. Bill Kristol is not one of those people. He’s shown himself willing to support anyone and anything if he feels it allows him to slap at the President.

Kristol is of course famous for his neoconservative views, where he’s never met a country he didn’t want to bomb or a group of people he didn’t want to arm.

Well, today he finally found citizens of a country he doesn’t want to ship guns to – Law-abiding Americans.

How does Kristol arrive at the conclusion of which firearms fall under the God-given, constitutionally mandated rights we enjoy (at least for a little while longer)? He doesn’t say, but such arbitrary distinctions seem rather unconservative to me. We know the Supreme Court has already ruled that guns in common use are protected and an AR-15 is the most common rifle in the country. Should gun ownership simply based on Kristol’s gut feelings?

Coincidentally, this has become a common theme among the high profile names of the Never Trump movement. We’ve seen similar denunciations of the 2nd Amendment from people like David Frum, Bret Stephens, and David Brooks. It’s almost like these people never really supported gun rights in the first place? Were these people total phonies from the beginning and simply saw the conservative movement as a way to raise their profiles and make a lot of money?

I think we all know the answer to that.

General Mike Flynn’s legal team was back in US District Court on Friday and his new attorney, Sidney Powell, came loaded for bear. Rather than walk away from the plea deal, Powell wants additional discovery with the stated intention of a) obtaining sanctions against the Mueller team prosecutors who were operating under the direction of the lawless Andrew Weissmann.

The issue is Weissmann’s goons concealing Brady material (see the explainer). This is a hot button issue with the judge in this case, Emmett Sullivan. Sullivan, by standing order, instructs prosecutors of their duty divulge exculpatory material to the defense and he his the guy who tossed Ted Stevens’s conviction because of the grotesque misconduct by the Department of Justice.

Here is sort of seems like that when the prosecutors were forced to cough up more material, there was exculpatory material included but they tried to paper over the concealment by stating the material was not covered.

The reaction was not long in coming. The New York Times’s Adam Goldman, who has been the beneficiary of a lot of FBI and Mueller related leaks and who claimed that terrorist rejoice when the FBI shuts down a leak

was on the job. Check out the lede:

Lawyers for Michael T. Flynn, the president’s first national security adviser, escalated their attacks on prosecutors on Friday, recycling unfounded conspiratorial accusations in a last-ditch bid to delay his sentencing in a case in which he has twice admitted guilt.

The move could anger Emmet G. Sullivan, the federal judge who will sentence Mr. Flynn. The filings could magnify any doubts by Judge Sullivan about whether Mr. Flynn truly accepts responsibility for his crime of lying to the F.B.I. and whether he fulfilled his cooperation agreement with the government in one of the lingering cases brought by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.

Actually this is entirely bullsh**. Powell is not recycling conspiracy theories. Apparently, what Goldman considers to be a conspiracy theory is this:

In a pair of filings, Mr. Flynn’s lawyers made clear that they view him as a victim of prosecutorial misconduct, amplifying right-wing theories about a so-called deep state of government bureaucrats working to undermine President Trump. The defense lawyers accused prosecutors of engaging in “pernicious” conduct in Mr. Flynn’s case, saying they had been “manipulating or controlling the press to their advantage to extort that plea.”

If we hadn’t just gone through over two years of rogue Clinton loyalists in the federal bureaucracy using the power of the state to spy on the presidential campaign of President Trump, to spy on his transition team, and to connive to have a special prosecutor appointed on the basis of a document they either knew or should have known was bogus this might be humorous. But we did and Goldman is delusional if he still holds that these were just devoted public servants trying to innocently oust a president.

The government has stated that Flynn has fulfilled in agreement. And if Sullivan has any doubts it will be about the prosecutors. I’m 99% convinced that the lambasting that Flynn got from Sullivan, where he was accused of treason, was an effort by Sullivan to get Flynn to not lay down and roll over for what is looking more and more like a dishonest prosecution.

Here’s Rowan Scarborough to remind us of some of the details.

One of the FBI agents who interviewed Flynn at the White House is fired agent Peter Strzok. He headed the Trump-Russia probe, used the dossier and vowed in a text message to “stop” Mr. Trump.

The other agent who interviewed Flynn was the link between the bureau and former Associate Deputy Attorney General Bruce Ohr. Mr. Ohr became the main messenger for Fusion GPS, the Clinton opposition research firm that hired former British spy Christopher Steele. He wrote the now-discredited dossier that alleged a wide Trump-Russia election conspiracy.

The conduct and motives of Strzok and his partner are very much at issue.

Here you have an example of officials, I suspect one of them is named Andrew Weissmann, leaking classified information to Goldman that the government refuses to share with Flynn’s attorney:

“We must have access to that information to represent our client consistently with his constitutional rights and our ethical obligations,” Mr. Flynn’s lawyers wrote.

The classified transcripts of the calls make clear that the two men discussed sanctions at length and that Mr. Flynn was highly unlikely to have forgotten those details when questioned by the F.B.I., several former United States officials familiar with the documents have said. It was clear, the officials said, that sanctions were the only thing Mr. Flynn wanted to talk about with Mr. Kislyak.

All in all, Goldman’s story is a one-sided apologia for the conduct of a team of lawless cretins hellbent on punishing political opponents for fun and profit. It is the prosecutors response to Powell’s brief, not a news story. The are more focused on telling Judge Sullivan and people who might influence him what right thinking people at the New York Times demand that he do rather than covering the story. And the fact that Weissmann and his cronies would come out of the woodwork to slam Powell’s filing shows she is onto something that they don’t want brought to light.

Flynn is certainly playing a high stakes game. And we owe him a debt of gratitude for that. The quickness of the response from Mueller’s goons as relayed through the New York Times shows that they are afraid of what is coming next. Even if Flynn doesn’t walk, more and more of the abuse of power and deliberate misconduct that were Andrew Weissmann’s stock in trade are going to become apparent and eventually someone is going to be called to account.

On NBC Sunday, Chuck Todd attempted a bringing of balance to the Force by laying out a counterweight to 2020 hopeful Joe Biden’s growing gaggle of goof-ups.

The steadying counterpart? Donald Trump’s “lies.”

As reported by Fox News, during Meet the Press, the host offered this poignant question:

“For Biden, whispers about his age have grown louder, especially given some recent verbal faceplants. But, the question is: In the age of Trump, is it possible to have the Biden gaffe conversation, without having the Trump lies conversation?”

Chuck then played a video which basically felt like this:

Dear America,

Here are a bunch of mistakes Joe’s made. He’s even told a story about a military man that never happened. Yeah, but Trump makes mistakes, too. And what do mistakes matter, or maybe one lie, when we’ve got Donald “King Liar” Trump in the White House?? This dude lies like a maniac. Lies, lies, lies, lies, lies. And then a buncha lies. Donald Trump is a dirty liar, and everyone should vote for Joe Biden. If you don’t, you’re an idiot. And that’s news.

Love, NBC

We’re All Hitler Now

Westlake Legal Group Untitled-13 We’re All Hitler Now the washington post right wing Politics media bias Illiberlism Hitler Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Donna Zuckerberg democrats debate Dave Rubin Crazy Censorship Ben Shapiro

If you believe in using reason and debate to arrive at sound conclusions, congrats, you are now basically Hitler.

That’s the the logic being applied by a series of recent spate of op-eds over at The Washington Post. The line of thinking goes something like this. Hitler ate steak. You eat steak. Therefore, you are obviously Hitler. Makes sense, right?

My colleague streiff covered one of these articles a few days ago, which sought to connect those who argue with logic and facts to the slave owners of the Antebellum South.

Here’s another excerpt from the article itself to give you an idea of how specious the reasoning is. Dang it, there I go citing reason again, which obviously makes me a fascist.

These are figures who typically dislike President Trump but often say they’re being pushed rightward — sometimes away from what they claim is their natural leftward bent — by intolerance and extremism on the left. The reasonable right includes people like Shapiro and the radio commentator Dave Rubin; legal scholar Amy Wax and Jordan Peterson, the Canadian academic who warns about identity politics; the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt; the New York Times columnist Bari Weiss and the American Enterprise Institute scholar Christina Hoff Sommers, self-described feminists who decry excesses in the feminist movement; the novelist Bret Easton Ellis and the podcaster Sam Harris, who believe that important subjects have needlessly been excluded from political discussions. They present their concerns as, principally, freedom of speech and diversity of thought. Weiss has called them “renegade” ideological explorers who venture into “dangerous” territory despite the “outrage and derision” directed their way by haughty social gatekeepers.

The reasonable right’s rhetoric is exactly the same as the antebellum rhetoric I’d read so much of. The same exact words. The same exact arguments. Rhetoric, to be precise, in support of the slave-owning South.

The Washington Post wasn’t done though. Less than a day later, they pushed out another piece, this time asserting that those who seek honest debate are actually just doing what Nazi Germany did.

Excerpts via the Washington Examiner.

“A call to debate may seem intellectual, even civilized,” she continued. “In theory, well-structured and respectful debates are an ideal opportunity to reach an audience that isn’t fixed in its views. In reality, however, most ‘debate me’ types seem to view them mainly as a chance to attack their opponent’s credibility,” Zuckerberg wrote. “Their model is not Lincoln and Douglas, but rather Socrates: By needling their interlocutors with rapid-fire questions, they aim to reveal, as they see it, their opponents’ ignorance and stupidity, and their own superior intelligence and logic.”

Oh crap, Socrates is cancelled.

Keep in mind that the Socratic method forms a major cornerstone of Western civilization’s ability to think critically. Dang, I did again. Citing Western civilization also makes you a Nazi according to these people. Anyway, check out this passage.

“Platonic texts show Socrates pulling any number of Athenians into debates, and although some are eager to argue with him, others can hardly wait to escape him by the end of the dialogue. Plato’s ‘Euthyphro’ concludes with Euthyphro insisting that he has to leave, while Socrates calls after him, complaining that they haven’t yet figured out the nature of piety. Many of the dialogues end when the interlocutor has been bludgeoned into submission and seems to find it easier to agree with Socrates than continue further — every ‘debate me’ man’s dream.”

Wait, are you telling me that when facts, reason, and logic are on your side, you tend to win arguments? Shocking stuff. This author finds that reprehensible though and decides that those who use such methods are really just Nazis or something.

Zuckerberg later distilled her opinion, writing, “My actual, nuanced argument is that the long enmeshment of the classics and white supremacy, both in Nazi Germany and in the pre-Civil War American South, continues to inform how we understand the ancient Mediterranean, and that progressive classical scholars should discuss that legacy and confront it.”

I don’t find much nuance in that argument. I find it to be overly broad and connective of two things that aren’t actually connected at all.

As I stated at the beginning of the article, it’s the “Hitler did this, you do this, so you are Hitler” argument. Just because bad people sometimes do the same things good people do, it doesn’t make said things inherently negative or evil. Hitler also road in cars and peed in a toilet. Yet, those things aren’t connected to white supremacy. Neither are the classics and the open debate model we’ve learned from them, which themselves have nothing to do with pushing racial superiority.

In fact, such means of reasoning have led mankind to a much more humane, healthy place than previous centuries. It’s through reason (and religious principles) that we were able to move toward equality and away from discrimination in the first place. The ancient world, which was rife with brutality and slavery lacked the very things this author now decries. Socrates was not an evil bully. He was someone who valued critical thinking and mental stimulation, things that have undoubtedly made the world a better place. As we’ve learned through various failings throughout history, relying on emotion to set policy and dictate social norms has created disastrous results. It’s how you ended up with people arguing that other human beings weren’t actually human beings. Logic and reason is what destroys such arguments. It doesn’t propagate them.

But you can see the wider goal of this author’s ideology. It’s essentially to buttress her illiberal notions, painting the very things that allow us to debate logically as evil, thereby asserting that any disagreement at all with her worldview is itself evil.

This is ridiculous stuff, but it’s also dangerous stuff that’s gaining a following. It leads to a place where facts no longer matter and there’s no foundational consensus undergirding our society. When that’s gone, we are simply at the whim of whoever can convince enough people their way is the “right” way. Appeals to logic and reason are simply ignored.

I would think mainstream press outlets like the Post would choose not to push nonsense like this given it contradicts with their stated respect of fact. I guess not.

In the end, one would hope people like this author will simply alienate enough people so as to have no power to implement what they seek. Sometimes I wonder if we are really winning this battle though.

Beto O’Rourke Has News for You About Your Guns

Beto O’Rourke’s campaign has reached the desperation phase.

Having only managed to draw around 2% in most of the polls of the past few months, Beto has decided to throw caution to the wind and go as far left as possible. He can’t give a speech these days without calling Trump Hitler or bemoaning his own privilege to pander to the social justice crowd.

He’s also gone well outside of the mainstream on guns, calling for a “gun buy back” program a month ago. Beto’s language is getting more pointed now. Take this latest comment.

This is the kind of thing you’d expect to hear from a tin pot dictator and even though we’ve become desensitized to much of this kind of talk, it’s still pretty striking when you dwell on it. A presidential candidate is telling the country that he would force them to sell something he disproves of to the government. Never mind the constitutional rights in play here, Beto’s word is apparently all that is needed.

There’s also the ridiculous notion of “buying back” weapons. No one that I know of (outside of perhaps old surplus sales?) buys their guns from the government, therefore they can’t “buy” them back. We’ve heard this proposal from other failed candidates such as Kirsten Gillibrand and it’s an idea that’s picking up steam in liberal circles.

What it really shows is just how perverse a view the left has of the government’s power over normal citizens. In there minds, everything comes from the state and is thereby the purview of the state. It’s an ideological viewpoint that has led to tyranny throughout history. In the minds of these Democrat candidates though, that is totally acceptable and it’s why they can use the buy back language without even realizing how illogical it is.

Of course, the other big issue here is exactly how such a plan would even be enforced.

Any gun confiscation program would end badly in a variety of ways, not the least of which would be the probable violence. I’d also posit that many state and local police departments would simply ignore such an edict, as they should. They aren’t subject to he unconstitutional whims of the President. We could also get into the ignorance displayed by comparing an AK-47 to an AR-15, but I digress.

The good news is that Beto isn’t going to be President. His flailing pandering and desperation are simply signs of how short on life his campaign really is. There’s a certain justice in seeing a guy so propped up and mythologized by the media when he ran for Senate now crash and burn so hard running for president. We can all hope his political career meets its final death soon.

The Washington Post Smears a Starbucks Barista for Putting ISIS On Someone’s Cup

Targeting individuals with no public profile to virtue signal for social justice warriors seems to be a favored past time of The Washington Post.

We all remember how they treated Nick Sandmann after he supposed “smirked” at a Native American man named Phillips. In actuality, the teenager was being harassed by Phillips and verbally assaulted by the Black Hebrew Israelites, a racist hate group.

Well, the Post is at it again, this time going after a Starbucks barista for supposedly discriminating against a Muslim man.

Niquel Johnson paid for three drinks in Philadelphia on Sunday, and in typical Starbucks fashion, an employee asked for his name. Johnson, 40, told them “Aziz,” his Islamic name pronounced ah-zeez. He has used it for 25 years — and “countless” times at that particular store.

But three unusual things happened on this occasion, he said. When his order was ready, a staffer announced them by drink type, not his name.

The second unusual part was the employee wrote his name as “ISIS” — the acronym for the Islamic terror group — in the printout attached to all three drinks…

“I was shocked and angry. I felt it was discrimination,” Johnson told The Washington Post on Friday.

Yeah, you are reading that right. The Washington Post is running, as a national news story, an allegation of discrimination that was obviously just someone misspelling a name. Before ISIS became the king of international terrorist groups, it was actually used as a name, so there’s that detail as well in this. It’s also perfectly reasonable that someone not familiar with Middle Eastern names might confuse “Aziz” for “Isis.”

Of course, there’s more to this story. Namely, that the Post was simply regurgitating a CAIR press release without disclosing that’s what they were doing.

Sunday after leaving work, Philadelphia resident Abdul Aziz Johnson stopped at a Chestnut Hill Starbucks on Germantown Avenue with two friends and ordered three iced drinks, according to Jacob Bender, the executive director of CAIR-Philadelphia, the local chapter of the Council of American-Islamic Relations…

In a press release, Bender asked, “Was this an innocent mistake, or a sick joke associating Mr. Aziz and his friends, who were wearing traditional Muslim clothing, with the extremist group responsible for tens of thousands of deaths in Iraq and Syria, thus perpetuating the lie that Muslims are uniquely prone to violent behavior and terrorism?”

The entire story came from CAIR. Apparently when terrorist connected, dumpster fire organizations like CAIR say something, the valiant reporters at The Washington Post treat it as an unbiased source. That seems concerning.

Actually, the Post’s version is worse, because even the CAIR commentary acknowledges this could have been an honest mistake. Oh yeah, and the barista who wrote the word on the cup? He’s African American, just like Abdul Aziz is.

But there’s a broader issue here, which I mentioned early on. The way the media are constantly going after normal people, often for honest mistakes, and trying to ruin their lives is disgusting. It’s poison to our social fabric. It’s also incredibly hypocritical, as these same press outlets cry foul the moment you target any of their reporters for criticism. This stuff needs to stop. A barista misspelling someone’s name is simply not national news, and the only reason to treat it is as such is for purely political reasons. Enough already.
