Poll: Sanders jumps to lead nationally among non-white voters

Westlake Legal Group ZXGc8Hs4WZtuxvFAUWRtTEAeDl4S59B4Z2AHF9svgSw Poll: Sanders jumps to lead nationally among non-white voters r/politics

Counterpoint : we actually needed to lose, and we needed to lose in exactly 2016, regardless of who we nominated. Let’s say Bernie was nominated and that upped turnout enough that he squeaked out the win instead of squeaking out the loss. That would not have significantly changed the results in the Senate or House. Unless you want to claim that Bernie would have swung an extra 5% or something, the House would have remained in GOP control. But even if the House got taken, the Senate would not have, and they only needed one of them to prevent everything other than executive orders. Yes, some things can be done without control of Congress, it’s not like Trump suddenly became unable to be shitty after 2018. But a hell of a lot of things can be stopped, and that would have applied to Bernie as well.

Therefore, had he won, Bernie would have started from the same position that Obama was in from 2010 onward. He would not have been able to accomplish all that much, and things would mostly have remained status quo. But in this timeline, since Trump is not out there alienating so many people, particularly the suburbs, that means the pattern from the Obama years would just have continued on. 2018 would not have been a blue wave, it would likely have further solidified control of Congress for the GOP. They would have continued their propaganda efforts, using Bernie as the new demon instead of Obama or Clinton. 2020 hits, GOP uses the Census and redistricting in the same way they did in 2010, and further stack the deck in their favor for another decade.

Yes, Trump has been unbelievably shitty, even worse than most expected. But without him publicly being so awful, people would have remained asleep, just as they were during the Obama years. Shit, even after almost 4 years of Trump, look at how many people STILL want to support Biden so that things can “return to normal.” There are just a LOT of people out there that want nothing more than to not pay attention to politics at all. Only someone as clearly, undeniably awful like Trump was going to wake those people up. And only if they are awake do we have any chance of regaining the Senate, so that whoever gets elected in 2020 can actually DO something.

Discussion Thread: Senate Impeachment Trial – Day 7: Opening Arguments Continue | 01/27/2020 – Live, 1pm EST – Part II

Today the Senate Impeachment trial of President Donald Trump continues with Session 2 of President Trump’s defense counsel’s opening arguments. The Senate session is scheduled to begin at 1pm EST.

Prosecuting the House’s case will be a team of seven Democratic House Managers, named last week by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and led by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff of California. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and Trump’s personal lawyer, Jay Sekulow, are expected to take the lead in arguing the President’s case. Kenneth Star and Alan Dershowitz are expected to fill supporting roles.

The Senate Impeachment Trial is following the Rules Resolution that was voted on, and passed, on Monday. It provides the guideline for how the trial is handled. All proposed amendments from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) were voted down.

The adopted Resolution will:

  • Give the House Impeachment Managers 24 hours, over a 3 day period, to present opening arguments.

  • Give President Trump’s legal team 24 hours, over a 3 day period, to present opening arguments.

  • Allow a period of 16 hours for Senator questions, to be addressed through Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

  • Allow for a vote on a motion to consider the subpoena of witnesses or documents once opening arguments and questions are complete.

Senators overseeing impeachment trial got campaign cash from Trump legal team members

Westlake Legal Group 2IE5UbjTQqMT2uKHOiegbT-QQ2G-ycsxSnYlT21DUO0 Senators overseeing impeachment trial got campaign cash from Trump legal team members r/politics

” Some members of President Donald Trump’s impeachment defense team are campaign donors to jurors in the Senate.

Former independent counsels Ken Starr and Robert Ray, who investigated then-President Bill Clinton around the time of his impeachment, each made large campaign contributions to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) last year before joining Trump’s legal team.

Starr, who on Monday lambasted what he called the “age of impeachment” before the Senate, gave $2,800 to McConnell in July 2019. Just after House Democrats launched an impeachment inquiry in September, Ray gave McConnell $5,600, the maximum allowed for the primary and general elections. OpenSecrets couldn’t identify any other federal contributions from the two during the 2020 cycle.

Before the impeachment trial started, McConnell said he would work in “total coordination” with the White House on impeachment tactics, prompting backlash from Senate Democrats and one crucial Republican. The Republican-led Senate is expected to acquit Trump on charges that he abused the presidency by withholding aid from Ukraine in exchange for an investigation into his political opponents. Following revelations reportedly uncovered in a manuscript written by former national security adviser John Bolton, some Republicans may join Democrats in calling for witnesses to testify.

Among Starr’s other political contributions, he gave $2,700 to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) in 2017. Graham has emerged as one of Trump’s staunchest allies in the Senate, but he indicated Monday he’s interested in seeing what Bolton wrote in the manuscript.  “

‘Blow Up the Phones’: Demands That #BoltonMustTestify Surge After New Revelations About Ukrainian Aid Freeze. “We are citizens of the United States of America, and we must indeed unite together to stop this GOP cover-up.”

They must be stopped at all costs.

Just hijacking this comment to remind people that it’s doubly important to call your Senators and Representatives if they are Republicans!

I know, I know: “But Max they’ll never listen to me, they’ll never change their mind, my call won’t make a difference!”

This isn’t necessarily about changing their minds, it’s about sending a message, letting them know that there are people who will proactively campaign and vote against them if they obstruct the law and the constitution. The point of calling is to put the fear of God into them, to give them another voice in their ear besides just the lobbyists and the Fox news pundits. The more hopeless it seems, the more important it is for you to participate, that’s how politics works: When they ignore us, we speak louder! No, you may not change their minds, but hearing “Sir, you’ve got ten thousand new voice mails.” could very well make a difference. Speak up, speak out, make yourself be heard.

So put your concerns aside for a moment, take five minutes and call your Senator, even and especially if they’re Republicans. Let them know with a clear voice: If you don’t support this inquiry then we’ll send someone to Washington DC who will. Vote with your voice.
