Democratic lawmaker says Barr’s reported meeting with Murdoch should be investigated

Westlake Legal Group Ka1wGLbXtu8MB62LjTF1Oa_IiTXVeSmMoURVWXWcSlQ Democratic lawmaker says Barr's reported meeting with Murdoch should be investigated r/politics

Murdoch, from the FOX TV station?

Why would he need to meet with Barr, the President’s personal fixer?

Was it official U.S. Government business, or not?

Was it related to Trump the 2020 candidate, Trump the President of the United States, Trump the Reality TV star, or, something else?

Warren attacks Facebook for ‘quietly’ changing its political ad policy after Zuckerberg’s meeting with Trump

Westlake Legal Group cTYvMUuFsmFcB7Z9sCn5w-dR9bIMhjef18hbSjl_jBA Warren attacks Facebook for 'quietly' changing its political ad policy after Zuckerberg's meeting with Trump r/politics

It’s impossible to ban political ads because there’s hardly anything in existence that isn’t political. If explicitly political ads are banned then a whole new science of “what is political” will come about so corporations can lobby their position into being legally non-political and propagandize the fuck out of it.

This is also the problem with “getting corporate money out of politics.” If you put a hard cap on explicit political donations you’re just going to be pushing the problem underground so it’s even harder to see who’s the lizard person controlling everything.|

Any reasonable person should see the virtue in getting corporate money out of politics, but if we’re going to bring up policy like this we may as well start thinking now about how we’re going to deal with it when corporations skirt the “donation” line with supposedly unaffiliated propaganda operations

Discussion Thread: Louisiana Gubernatorial Primary – October 12, 2019

Introduction

Today, voters in Louisiana head to the polls (or have already voted) in the gubernatorial jungle primary. Louisiana is one of 5 states (the others being MS, KY, VA and NJ) which elects its Governor in odd year elections, with elections for Governor and other row offices in Mississippi and Kentucky, as well as legislative elections in New Jersey and Virginia occurring next month. As a further quirk that is somewhat common in Southern states, Louisiana has a jungle primary – voters today will vote in a general election and, if no candidate obtains at least 50% of the vote, the top two candidates will face each other in a runoff election on November 16.

The incumbent, Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards, is seeking reelection. Edwards was elected in 2015 after defeating then-US Senator David Vitter, prominently attacking Vitter’s involvement in the DC Madam scandal in the runoff. He faces two major Republican opponents, Congressman Ralph Abraham (LA-05) and businessman Eddie Rispone, who are each vying for a chance to face Edwards in the runoff election. President Donald Trump won Louisiana by a 58-38 margin in the 2016 presidential election, but polling has shown Governor Edwards competitive in both the primary, and the runoff election.

As always, please be mindful of our civility rules when participating, and if you’re a Louisianan redditor, please take the time to geaux vote if you haven’t yet done so!

Voter Information

Candidates*

*3 other candidates, Democrat Oscar Dantzler, Republican Patrick Landy, and Independent Gary Landrieu will also be on the ballot. Public polling does not show these candidates garnering more than 5% of the vote.

Polling

*Pollster reaches this result by assuming that 90% of undecided black voters will support Gov. Edwards, and that black voters will account for 27% of the electorate.

**Internal poll for Congressman Ralph Abraham.

Trump campaign ‘still hasn’t paid security bills for rallies to at least six cities’

Westlake Legal Group udKTSeOSk0Uer3HwlhH8W-2Jkd_Ccir10VZUiovV1vg Trump campaign 'still hasn't paid security bills for rallies to at least six cities' r/politics

In June, the Center for Public Integrity reported Mr Trump owed more than $840,000 from invoices across the US, not including the latest bill from Minneapolis. CNN found that six of those cities still are waiting for checks.

Mr Trump’s largest invoice came from El Paso, where a February rally cost $470,417.

Among Mr Trump’s outstanding bills were a $65,124 tab from Spokane, Washington in May 2016 and a $47,398 bill from a rally in Eau Claire, Wisconsin in April 2016, both several months before the election.

While in office, Mr Trump racked up unpaid bills in Mesa, Arizona; Lebanon, Ohio; and Burlington, Vermont, for a total of $89,122.

Each city should start adding extortionate rates of interest.

Limiting The Scope of Impeachment Makes No Sense When New Crimes Are Revealed Daily

Westlake Legal Group mGWCxkE2DD-mxVgjLgBCyzPsaOhr_iYiIsJfqtQ3s4A Limiting The Scope of Impeachment Makes No Sense When New Crimes Are Revealed Daily r/politics

It actually makes perfect sense. There’s a reason that support for impeachment among the public has surged over the last few weeks. It’s because the Ukraine thing is understandable. It’s simple and clear. The crime is evident even to those who don’t follow politics closely, which is the majority. And that public support is crucial.

Nothing is preventing Congress from following up with new impeachment articles later, and nothing is preventing law enforcement, once Trump is out of office, from following up with indictments.

But in the meantime, a limited approach is smart, and it’s working. Pelosi knows what she’s doing.
