This is ultimately the problem with liberal ideology (as opposed to Socialist, lest people think I’m a conservative). You’re too desperate to believe there is always a solution that works for everyone, where everyone comes out better, that can be described as a win-win. You convince yourselves that, when the rich act selfishly, they’re not just failing to be moral – they’re failing to be smart, and that if everyone just understood properly, they’d all realize their interests fall in the same place.
But that isn’t the case. Rich people know what they’re doing. They understand very well where their interests lie, and those interests are completely contrary to those of workers.
Because it ultimately isn’t about money or wealth – it’s about power, and the power money gives you over others isn’t measured in absolute terms – it’s about the disparity in wealth between you. When the rich make the poor poorer, they’re increasing their power over them. They have every reason to want to actively make the lives of workers worse.
To expound further, a lot of Liberals are fond of accusing Leftists of being “just like Conservatives”. In a way, they’re right – just like Conservatives, Leftists understand how the world actually works.
We live in a world where might makes right, where the strong prey on the weak as a matter of course, and getting to the top requires stomping on the heads of the people below you. The difference is, Conservatives like it that way – or, at least, believe it’s impossible to change it – whereas Leftists want to tear it down and rebuild it.
We want to replace this horrible, awful world full of suffering that currently exists with one where everyone’s interests are in common, where people can come together and work for the good of all, and where cooperative institutions matter more than individual power.
Liberals have, somehow, convinced themselves we’re already living in the world Leftists want to build. But those “institutions” you have so much reverence for, the “rule of law” you respect so much – those are just fairy tales. Pleasant lies you tell yourselves to hide the true nature of the world you live in from yourselves. Power isn’t just the only thing that matters – it’s the only thing that’s real.
It’s time to stop living in a fantasy world, and time to start tearing down the real one.
