You know what? Fuck that thinking.
I use Twitter maybe twice a month. But you know who uses it every day? Millions of Americans.
People love bitching about trending hashtags, but you know what they do? They get people aware. They get people talking. Most of the country has no idea what’s been going on with the proceedings. These trending hashtags have people discussing the “trial” more than you’d think. I commute by train, and you know what people were discussing? This.
Social media is the single most powerful tool when it comes to disseminating information at a rapid pace. Why do you think Russia used it so heavily to influence 2016? Twenty years ago, you would have had people amassing a group to go march but it would be weeks after the vote for witnesses. Now, we get an article released and a couple of hours later it’s been shared by millions upon millions.
Does everyone read it? No. Does everyone have the ability to vote him out? No. But it’s a fuck of a lot better than people being unaware.
I mean, fuck, you’re on a social media platform right now and I’d be hard pressed to deny that I get news from here regularly. The Arab Spring was only possible to coordinate at that level because of social media. South Korea had massive protests that were structured and coordinated on social media.
It’s not slacktivism. It’s not pretending to care. It’s not thoughts and prayers. It’s people using a tool to announce their displeasure with the events happening. It’s no different than making a protest sign, except it’s going to be seen by a lot more people and it’s easier for people who are outraged but lack the means to physically protest.
Hell, “slacktivism” as a term was created to downplay the use of social media in protesting. But it’s actually a great tool.
And before you make assumptions about what I do: I march, I protest, and I am involved with a local political group. And I am fucking grateful for people getting this stuff trending because it makes more people aware and that is the goal of public protesting.
So fuck complaining about trending.
