Tuesday’s impeachment hearings were a disaster for Republicans

Westlake Legal Group MS5hhAkAdDmUfvnC2SJ8R3yc_uF7CWLbPPY5s6Zs5Fk Tuesday’s impeachment hearings were a disaster for Republicans r/politics

In a way, it all makes sense. Ever since Reagan, the Republicans have used the language of the “everyman” where they deliberately toned down the complexity of their policy conversations to cloak corporatism and racism with abstraction. The problem is, by using this simplified policy conversation to entice the bigots to their side, genuine idiocy took hold in the Republican base. When Obama was elected, the Republicans freaked out and sent people who exemplified this mix of stupidity and racism to Congress, eventually culminating in Donald Trump.

To gain the uneducated racist vote, Republicans became uneducated racists.

Sanders: ‘Your $8.99 Netflix subscription is more than the company paid in federal income taxes’

Westlake Legal Group GGALnUUEJ5XfuZWRB_Jc7ilKeQpE_52698liZaHM_UU Sanders: 'Your $8.99 Netflix subscription is more than the company paid in federal income taxes' r/politics

There are valid reasons for a company that posts profits to not pay taxes that I support, and there are reasons that I do not support. Carry-forwards make sense, and in concept and (generally speaking) in are reasonable practice.

Currently, tax law is far too lenient towards businesses. While I’m sure Netflix did (or would) exploit GOP-created tax loopholes if applicable, you’d have to know more about their position before being horrified to learn that they paid zero income tax.

High growth companies often intentionally incur significant losses for years, even when they have the ability to operate at a healthy profit. Remove carry forwards and companies lose appetite to incur losses in order to grow.

Taxes are complicated. There are good reasons we would want a company that posts an $800M profit to pay $0 in income tax. There are also plenty of absolute bullshit reasons for that to happen.

I’m here with a few friends to talk threats facing the 2020 Census and to answer all your questions. AMA, Reddit! r/politics

Robert Santos, President-Elect of the American Statistical Association, internationally recognized expert in the census, and Chief Methodologist at the Urban Institute, is back on Reddit with his friends to talk about threats facing the 2020 Census. He was here last week talking about what the census is, why it’s so important, and why you should care that every US resident is counted.

Every ten years, the Census Bureau has a HUGE responsibility: to count EVERY RESIDENT in the US. But what challenges does the agency face? ANSWER = SO MANY. From hiring the thousands of workers who actually do the counting, to counting people who live in remote places (turns out some people live in mountain ranges, who knew!), to stopping hackers from stealing your data (which has never happened to date, btw), to countering misinformation on the Internet, the Census Bureau has a really, REALLY big job (which is to make sure that every resident in the US is counted). And since 2020 is the first time people can be counted using the Internet, there are sure to be even more challenges than ever before…

Reddit, the 2020 Census is SUPER important and we need to do everything we can to make sure that every resident in the US is counted. Ask Robert and his friends about threats facing the 2020 Census (answers initialed by experts below), and then continue the convo by requesting to join the CountOnStats LinkedIn group and by following @CountOnStats on twitter…

  • Constance Citro, Senior Scholar, Committee on National Statistics, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

  • Amy O’Hara, Research Professor, Georgetown University Massive Data Institute & Georgetown Federal Statistical Research Data Center

  • Andrew Reamer, Research Professor, The George Washington University Institute of Public Policy

  • John Thompson, former Presidentially appointed and Senate Confirmed Director of the Census Bureau from 2013-2017

UPDATE –> 1:26pm eastern –> hey Reddit! Thanks for all your excellent questions. We’re getting started shortly and look forward to geeking out #census style!
