Discussion Thread: Senate Impeachment Trial – Day 2: Vote on Resolution – Opening Arguments | 01/21/2020 – Live 1:00pm EST

Today the Senate Impeachment trial of President Donald Trump begins debate and vote on the rules resolution and may move into opening arguments. The Senate session is scheduled to begin at 1pm EST

Prosecuting the House’s case will be a team of seven Democratic House Managers, named last week by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and led by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff of California. White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and Trump’s personal lawyer, Jay Sekulow, are expected to take the lead in arguing the President’s case. Yesterday Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell released his Rules Resolution which lays out Senate procedures for the Impeachment Trial. The Resolution will be voted on today, and is expected to pass.

If passed, the Resolution will:

  • Give the House Impeachment Managers 24 hours, over a 2 day period, to present opening arguments.

  • Give President Trump’s legal team 24 hours, over a 2 day period, to present opening arguments.

  • Allow a period of 16 hours for Senator questions, to be addressed through Supreme Court Justice John Roberts.

  • Allow for a vote on a motion to consider the subpoena of witnesses or documents once opening arguments and questions are complete.

Pelosi Statement on McConnell Cover-Up Resolution

Westlake Legal Group 12CiNzoWZBcxDCWBFpv2Klsnw5IEUL9_lLKOkq4INjM Pelosi Statement on McConnell Cover-Up Resolution r/politics

Sadly, it won’t matter for McConnell. He’s senator for life. The man has a perpetually low approval rating, yet overwhelmingly wins his seat back in every election. As a Kentuckian, I see our crooked election process play out all the time. It’s “good ‘ol boy” politics. If the power players want you in, you’re in.

Bevin getting elected was a glaring example of the problems here. He handily won the governorship when he got elected in 2015. The story was that the dems just didn’t have the turnout. However, there were numerous other races down the ballot that had votes cast that were significantly higher than the number of votes cast for governor. To think that dems would, en masse, just not vote for governor when the opposing candidate was a religious zealot (or at least openly pandered to the evangelicals) is pretty preposterous. Especially given, prior to Bevin, we’ve only elected two republican governors since WWII. True to form though, it got buried and forgotten about. I’m honestly surprised it didn’t happen again against Bashear. I guess there were too many eyes watching this time.

NPR Poll: Majority Of Americans Believe Trump Encourages Election Interference

Westlake Legal Group cZtm2Nz0D50Jq6oyKtR2zjQh7tDYl531q9AjvfvmgfQ NPR Poll: Majority Of Americans Believe Trump Encourages Election Interference r/politics

Exactly this. We are living in a time where a shared understanding of facts and what the teuth is has vanished.

Ill never forget when Alysson Camerota had to Debate crime statistics with Newt Gingrich dueing the Republican convention ’16.

It basicslly went as followed:

• Gingritch claimed that violent crime has gone up in the US during the Obama years.

• Camerota, using criminal data, said that in fact violent crime has gone done.

• Gingrich: not in cities like chicago

• Camerota: yes, there are pockets where it has gone up but overall violent crime has gone down.

• Gingritch then said, and i quote “but people dont feel like it is down.

After some back and forth he was still adamant that people feeling something is just as viable an opinion as actual fact.

Just watch the whole thing, its insane. And i wonder, how do you argue with these people? Serioysly. They look at facts and say ‘i dint believe it’. How are you supposed to reach them?

Education would be a way to go, but your education system isnt exactly flawless..
