From her website:
“Mississippians need elected officials who understand the importance of working together, beyond party lines, to better our State. Shanda’s legal career has been equally divided between representing small business owners, Fortune 500 companies, and injured Mississippians. Having advocated on behalf of such a wide range of clients, Shanda has a unique, balanced perspective. She can listen to and understand the concerns of a diverse constituency, and bring her experience to bear in working towards finding common ground to effectively serve all Mississippians.”
“Shanda obtained her law degree from Mississippi College School of Law, where she graduated cum laude and served as an editor of the Law Review. Her undergraduate studies were completed at Hinds Community College and the University of Southern Mississippi. Shanda is a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, the Mississippi Association for Justice and the Junior League of Jackson. She has also been a member of the Mississippi Defense Lawyers Association where she served as editor of the MDLA Quarterly for several years.”
“Shanda is a partner at Burns & Associates, PLLC where she practices with her husband and business partner, Yancy Burns. Yancy is a combat veteran deployed during Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Mississippi Army National Guard. Shanda and Yancy are the proud parents of Evan, their spirited four-year-old son.”
She sounds a lot like a homegrown Obama type politician that got in pushing for k-12 reform in an area that desperately needs it. If she even has more left wing views she put them aside to try and win. Looking into her further she ran a positive campaign that hammered on fixing public education in MS by offering more competitive salaries to educators. The only thing I see that could be seen as negative is saying “it’s time for change” (sounds like Obama).
I’m not sure where you place Obama on the political spectrum, but it appears she would be pretty close to that mark. Lots of mentions on her posts about working across the aisle with Republicans to get MS public schools improved. Tons of experience as a lawyer so she is likely a bit of a wink too.
Good for Mississippi. Everyone deserves decent school.
