The FBI is asking questions about former Gov. Matt Bevin’s pardons

Westlake Legal Group eNgwa3DQnRNr3UGSKc9hy1sUIU_aE89It9RpIoEaiGw The FBI is asking questions about former Gov. Matt Bevin's pardons r/politics

Remember the lessons of former Tn Governor Ray Blanton…

In 1977, Blanton fired Marie Ragghianti, chairwoman of the state’s Board of Pardons and Paroles, when she refused to release prisoners who, as was later determined, had bribed state officials in exchange for obtaining pardons (Ragghianti later sued and won a $38,000 judgment against the state).[1] On December 15, 1978, the FBI raided the state capitol, and seized documents from the office of Blanton’s legal advisor, T. Edward Sisk. Sisk and two others were arrested, and Blanton appeared before a federal grand jury on December 23, where he denied any wrongdoing.[1]

On January 15, 1979, near the end of his term, Blanton issued pardons to 52 state prisoners,[11] including 20 convicted murderers.[4] Among those pardoned was Roger Humphreys, the son of a Blanton supporter, who had been convicted of killing his ex-wife and a male companion in 1973.[1] As Blanton signed Humphreys’ pardon, he stated, “this takes guts.” The Secretary of State, Gentry Crowell, who was disgusted with the pardons, replied, “some people have more guts than brains.”[5]

While Blanton stated the pardons were to comply with a court order to reduce the state’s prison population, the FBI and members of both parties grew concerned that the pardons were related to the alleged scandal then under investigation.[1] After U.S. Attorney Hal Hardin (a friend of Blanton) tipped off state leaders that Blanton was planning more pardons,[5] Lieutenant Governor (and Senate Speaker) John S. Wilder and State House Speaker Ned McWherter searched for a way to prevent further damage to the state’s reputation. They found it in the state constitution, which is somewhat vague on when a newly elected governor must be sworn in. It was eventually decided to swear in Lamar Alexander, who had won the 1978 gubernatorial election, three days before the traditional inauguration day. Wilder later referred to Blanton’s ouster as “impeachment Tennessee-style.”[12]

Pelosi Doubles Down, Won’t Pick Impeachment Managers Until Receiving Assurances of Fair Trial

Westlake Legal Group tkDcuUgviijQSzgbSQ5LeLBHglMdt0It56K0anxNYLg Pelosi Doubles Down, Won’t Pick Impeachment Managers Until Receiving Assurances of Fair Trial r/politics

I had a conversation with a few Trump supporters I know. Their take on this, is that the House impeachment proceedings were unfair, so why should the Senate’s be any different? They firmly believe this, and the propaganda machine that they consume reinforces that belief. As someone in another thread put it, they are essentially religious zealots.

Their high priest is Trump, their churches are the media outlets that spew lies, and their preachers are the talking heads. There is little that will convince them that they backed a charlatan, and if you do manage to get something across to them that makes them think, they lash out, usually with insults or changing the subject and trying to push some both sides game. An example of this, is when one of them got on a tear about Hillary, I asked why, if she is so obviously a criminal, why she hasn’t been arrested and charged, and that the Deep State isn’t an excuse. His response was to post some meme about how if every Jew in Germany had a gun, that the Holocaust wouldn’t have happened, and that I should think about this when supporting the Democrats.

The “What happened in your state last week?” Megathread, Week 51

Happy Holidays, r/politics!

Welcome to the ‘What happened in your state last week’ thread, where you can post any local political news stories that you find important in the comments. This is a weekly thread posted every Monday, in order to facilitate more discussion on local issues on r/politics. Since this is intended to be a thread about local politics, top-level comments that are exclusively about national issues will not be allowed. When commenting, please include the state you’re living in, and don’t forget to link sources. Also, please actually describe what happened. “I live in X, you know what happened” isn’t helpful to users and will be removed.

If someone from your state made a news round-up that you think is insufficient, feel free to comment to that round-up with further news stories. Enjoy discussion, and review our civility guidelines before engaging with others.
