Younger progressives need to give moderates credit for at least toeing the line against what would have been an even faster consolidating of rights and wealth. They should also blame social trends, not politicians for the direction the country went in the 70s and 80s.
In the big picture of things a shift away from decades of Democratic leadership was inevitable, not party is likely to hold power for more than a few decades or basically one or two generations.
My general theory is that people blame leadership for problems, not ideologies. After X amount of decades of having more Dem or more Republican leadership there is no other likely outcome than a flip of majority opinion.
The people in charge get the blame even when it’s not an avoidable problem. Year after year that adds up to society casting blame with simple labels and social trend to change the status quo arises. To some degree no matter how much better one platform is than the other the population will eventually give the other guys a shot, especially because they will blame the dominate party for problems that either party would have, but only one can be seen as the leader/dominate party.
The most dangerous or opportunistic time is as a generation is entering in their 30-40s and their voting rate goes up and they form more solid political views, often ones they keep for decades or life. Trump is helping converting Millennial to liberals, BUT if times only get worse and worse than regardless of who has the better ideas liberals could get blamed by Generation Z just for being in power when things when to shit.
This can happen on a smaller scale like it did to Obama and obviously because Republicans embrace risky de-regulation and tax breaks the negative consequences of their actions are more likely to fall on Dems than the negative actions of Dems falling on Republicans. Another simple reality is that being liberal and thinking up new ideas and embracing change is ALWAYS harder than stick with the same old same old. Liberals always have to work harder because they are selling the new ideas. Unfortunately being human they are prone to apathy at the same level, which means they are more likely to be made apathetic since their goals are always harder.
