Gerrymander guru’s secret files: He used racial data to disenfranchise black voters

Westlake Legal Group Op78VfQdk1-MLAA6Detts9ZovqJcUDmn6bUGLT-eV5k Gerrymander guru's secret files: He used racial data to disenfranchise black voters r/politics

Nothing to me has proven more true about America than when I first came to this realisation: the reintegration of the Confederacy into the Union was a poison pill that the Union swallowed. It’s going to kill the United States in the long term. The more I look at how the south abhors democracy, abhors civil rights, abhors values like a shared sense of humanity, empathy, and compassion, the more I feel like the United States of America will in the history books of the 30th century be known as inbetween-phase, a temporary joining of what are essentially two separate Americas and will eventually be two different states.

I feel like it’s starting to become time to face the music: the south just doesn’t want what the rest wants. They don’t aspire to the same things, they don’t have the same goals. If it wasn’t for the millions of black people living there, who require protection from racist laws by federal oversight, what reason would there be for Alabama and New York to be part of the same country? I say give them the myopic dystopia they desire. Give them their guns, abolish their health care, give them their tyranny of corporations and their dismantling of unions. They still wave the flags and worship the statues of a slave state, so let them be slaves.

Rick Scott administration rejected federal funds to fight HIV, sending Florida infection rates soaring

Westlake Legal Group p1WM-_ke4kM2vWR93cHeyToivsYzVfSJgp6jgIaatFI Rick Scott administration rejected federal funds to fight HIV, sending Florida infection rates soaring r/politics

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 93%. (I’m a bot)

While the Republican senator Rick Scott was governor of Florida, his administration presided over the effective blocking of $70m in federal funds available for fighting the state’s HIV crisis.

New York, which has spent aggressively on HIV and expanded Medicaid, saw a decrease of 30%. HIV diagnoses actually declined in Florida for at least five years through 2013, when they hit 4,315, only to increase by nearly 11% through 2017: the very period when the state missed out on tens of millions of dollars in federal funds.

All told, the Florida health department lost out on $53,837,844 – funding that could have had a profound impact on a growing HIV crisis but went to other states instead. HRSA’s discussions with the Florida health department, the federal agency reported, indicated that budget authority matters were greatest obstacle to the state’s ability to spend these funds.

Donald Trump didn’t donate $1 million to Hurricane Dorian victims in the Bahamas

Westlake Legal Group LVjA8cxxxadSxJ8xyRzg5pvbHYdNzZs-I-o5Tj3k1YA Donald Trump didn’t donate $1 million to Hurricane Dorian victims in the Bahamas r/politics

Of course, not.

He made that mistake in Texas with Hurricane Harvey.

And discovered that people expected him to follow through on it. Before he could just promise to make a donation and never do it like he did with 9/11. Now he would be hounded until it was proven that he did it.

So Trump had to pay a million dollars out of his own pocket. Because he could no longer use his foundation as it was under investigation otherwise you know he’d have had his foundation cut the check using other people’s money.

So Donald Trump had to give away a million dollars of his own money…and you know that burned.

So, after Harvey, he’s never offered a donation when he’s visited other areas that hurricanes have hit.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Republicans: History Will Remember You Backed Trump | “They can have that stain on their careers for the rest of their lives.”

Westlake Legal Group 8WlkVmsgHxiD0a4eInbkuOTZQXZvi1k0miLsREyKw2Q Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Republicans: History Will Remember You Backed Trump | “They can have that stain on their careers for the rest of their lives.” r/politics

I’m just afraid Republicans will get someone smart next time.

We need to de-emphasize what the Republicans will and will not do, and focus on what the Democratic Party does.

As long as the Democratic Party is full of the corporate Democrats who gleefully take money and the revolving door offers from the super-rich, we have nothing to oppose the Republicans with. Nothing.

Strength comes from within. We need to strengthen the progressive/left side instead of fretting over whatever the right is doing. Don’t let the right dictate your actions. Let the right dance to the tune of the left instead.

If all we do is react to the moves on the right, we are weak. We have to lead and let the right react instead.

Ocasio-Cortez: ‘I want to see every Republican go on the record and knowingly vote against impeachment’

One of many reasons to impeach.

  1. Impeachment will bring a lot of glossed over facts into the public eye, like Trump asking his lawyer to get rid of Mueller. Also Manafort giving polling data to Russians.

  2. Dems aren’t doomed in 2020 if it fails. Clinton’s acquittal in Feb 1999 was followed by Bush winning the presidency. Clinton didn’t even get an approval bump after it.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/116584/presidential-approval-ratings-bill-clinton.aspx

Every President who has been impeached (including Nixon’s likely impeachment) resulted in the opposition party winning the presidency. Democrat Johnson was followed by Republican Grant. Republican Nixon was followed by Democrat Carter. Democrat Clinton was followed by Republican Bush.

3. Trump’s name needs to go on the list of impeached presidents. He’s far worse than most. The narrative from people not paying attention will be “if he’s so bad why wasn’t he impeached like Clinton?” The majority of voters are not political news addicts. But they’ll all hear the word “impeachment” and some may decide to move on from all the smoke and chaos in their country when it’s time to vote.

4. Nixon had high approval ratings when impeachment talk started. The pretrial hearings brought out the facts to the public eye and everyone turned on him.

5. Raising the likelihood of prosecution after he’s out of office, or his children, may cause him to cut a deal to leave office.

6. There’s still a chance of conviction. People may turn on their senators once all the facts are blown up and a case is made. Nixon’s impeachment talk started when he had high approval ratings.

7. Barr’s word shouldn’t be the final say on this. He’s proven to be a cover-up artist.

8. It needs to be established that improper actions will be fought against to the fullest extent to deter future candidates from trying to steal elections.

9. Impeachment will be open to other issues that Mueller’s investigation was not like emoluments violations, conduct unbecoming of the presidency, tax violations, campaign finance violations, paying off pornstars to influence an election, wasting tax payer dollars on personal trips and benefiting financially from them, siding with Russia over US intelligence, separating families at the border, defrauding students at his university, ignoring Russia’s attack on our elections, attacking the press, attacking members of the judicial and legislative branches in order to control them, etc.

10. Trump uses lies, Fox News, and fake news. All that falls apart in a trial under oath. Get their damning testimonies on video and play clips around the clock. How many times have we seen Clinton’s “I did not have sexual relations with that woman”?

11. Impeachment may bring out more reason to examine his taxes and other financial documents.

12. Trump already convinced his base that Mueller exonerated him and it didn’t win over any Americans. A second “exoneration” will be meaningless. Everyone knows Republican senators won’t convict. Put them all on record supporting the president with the lowest approval ratings in modern history after the damning facts have been laid out. Republican and Independent supporters of the rule of law will turn against them. It will also hurt any chances of a Presidential run for any senators that vote to acquit.

13. Impeachment will be a game changer. It’s a household word, and it has only happened twice before. People that normally don’t pay attention will tune in just for the historical aspect. This will lead to greater support for impeachment as they learn the facts.

“President Trump fired John R. Bolton, his third national security adviser, on Tuesday amid fundamental disagreements over how to handle major foreign policy challenges like Iran, North Korea and Afghanistan. Mr. Trump announced the decision on Twitter. “I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House. I disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions, as did others in the Administration, and therefore I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service. I will be naming a new National Security Advisor next week.’ – NY Times” (edited)

I am David Chipman. I spent 25 years as a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). I stopped the illegal flow of guns from Virginia to New York, was on the ATF SWAT team, and served as Special Agent in Charge of ATF’s Firearms Programs. Now I work with former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords to save lives from gun violence. We do a lot of cool things. Yesterday we put out a video featuring some of the top Democratic candidates for president. Take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXQ-5nTpQbc&feature=youtu.be
