Jon Stewart Shames Mitch McConnell for Failing 9/11 First Responders on ‘Fox News Sunday’

As frustrating as centrists can be sometimes, I disagree. Like it or not, we still very much need them in our party, and if we want to be able to make any kind of progress at all, we very much need Democrat majorities whenever we can get them. Even if it means having someone like Joe Lieberman getting the public option removed from the ACA or someone like Joe Manchin voting to confirm Kavanaugh, it’s still better to have Liebermans and Manchins in their seats as Democrats than to have those seats taken by Republicans.

There’s two main reasons why we need centrists. The first is that levels of support for progressivism varies a lot by geography. While it would be nice to be able to get a Democrat majority consisting only of progressives as far left as AOC, that just isn’t possible. Places like West Virginia are kinda ass-backwards compared to NYC, and will (for the foreseeable future) never vote for a progressive, so it’s not useful to even consider that as a fantasy.

The second reason is, as much as it pains me to say it, that R or D next to someone’s name is sometimes more important than that person’s actual positions on issues. The key to remember is that having a majority in the House or Senate for your party is huge. Look at how much people hate McConnell for blocking things and never bringing them to a vote. The only reason he can do that is because Republicans have the majority in the Senate.

The other big deal with having a majority is that committees are extremely powerful, and a majority in either House or Senate means majorities in every committee. If Democrats had a majority in the Senate during the whole Kavanaugh confirmation, they could have killed the confirmation just with the judicial committee’s vote. As long as most Democrats are to the left of Republicans, it’s okay to have a few centrists in seats. The most damage they can do is either limited to the particular committees they get assigned to, or in matters that get voted on by the entire chamber, they might sometimes vote with Republicans, which is still better than giving the seat to a Republican since the key thing about a centrist is that they sometimes vote with Republicans.

Trump lashes out suggesting he could stay in office after two terms, amid poor approval ratings

Westlake Legal Group bJNJ0QaSsjmrCEfeMuxV3gntb5NnJcuz4g__zct7MlU Trump lashes out suggesting he could stay in office after two terms, amid poor approval ratings r/politics

It’s just insane hearing the exact same BS from the far-right parties of major European countries as we hear from the alt-right in the US.

This last week The Daily has been airing an exposé where they interview these people, and it’s all about “oh we’re just trying to keep X country X” (read: white), mixed with a bunch of stuff about returning to “traditional values”.

But the most concerning aspect was that they are far better able to articulate the issue at hand, the thing that’s turning them to support the far-right: they want the tyranny of the majority. They explained that they were tired of living under a democracy that protected the rights and opinions of the “minority”.

One of the most outrageous things I heard was when the interviewer asked them about the outrageously unpopular death penalty in Germany, something that has been outlawed for many, many years and is almost universally reviled over there: What if the majority decided to bring that back? Would that be ok?

They answered: “Well, that wouldn’t happen here. But if it did, yeah, that’s democracy.”

This is, of course, right after they went on for a bit about how they shouldn’t be judged just because they’re part of the same ideology that the Nazis espoused: “Well I wasn’t alive then, so why is that my fault?”

It’s honestly disturbing, and if you want to understand why these people support the ideas they do, listen and you’ll hear disturbing echoes of the exact same rhetoric the right is espousing in the US.

EDIT: As many others below me have stated, and as I believe as well (I didn’t want to include it simply because it’s not 100% relevant to the discussion at hand, anyone could hijack the national conversation with the same BS rhetoric):

It’s because this is all driven by the Russians. They’re pumping out far-right propaganda on a level previously unseen in history, they’re stirring up populist sentiments wherever possible (France’s Yellow Vest group, far-right parties in Poland, Italy, Germany, etc.), and they’re actively trying to break up the largest global power structures so that they’re free to invade whichever countries they want in order to restore themselves as a major world superpower.

Perspectives: Congress hasn’t raised the minimum wage in 3,614 days. It’s time to put hard-working Americans first

Westlake Legal Group s0mG26n82yBznWH3kYxcjzFxykLlgBGc7omES79PNMI Perspectives: Congress hasn't raised the minimum wage in 3,614 days. It's time to put hard-working Americans first r/politics

For everyone that says prices will rise or there will be downsizing if the minimum wage becomes $15/hour I say good, whatever it takes to pay people a livable wage. Honestly, upper management wants to make you feel that raising the minimum wage will have all these bad effects, but it’s bullshit. We damn well know executives would rather make some money rather than no money, so they are not going to close shop or do all these things that they say might happen if the minimum wage increases.

I think the solution is simple. If you give more money to people who already have a lot of money, then they are not going to spend that money, which will not stimulate the economy. If you give more money to people who already spend all their money, then they are going to spend that money, which will stimulate the economy.

Finally, why are we even arguing about paying human beings a livable wage, why wouldn’t you want your fellow Americans to thrive and succeed. Whatever your argument might be for not raising the minimum wage, it will never be good enough to make me think that people shouldn’t be paid a livable wage. If a business can’t afford to pay their employees a livable wage, then that business should not exist.
