My name is Mike Broihier. I’m running for Senate as a Democrat to beat Mitch McConnell and save our republic. AMA.

Westlake Legal Group 1bOnWz6pt7Vsr1ZfRqFh_YAn6_-VwWrpLbwp_iDy5EE My name is Mike Broihier. I'm running for Senate as a Democrat to beat Mitch McConnell and save our republic. AMA. r/politics

Hello, r/politics!

My name is Mike Broihier, and I am running for US Senate here in Kentucky as a Democrat, to retire Mitch McConnell and restore our republic. Proof.

I’ve been a Marine, a farmer, a public school teacher, a college professor, a county government official, and spent five years as a reporter and then editor of a local newspaper. With my experiences, we’ll put together a winning coalition in a rural state to beat Mitch McConnell once and for all.

We’ve been endorsed by Andrew Yang, Marianne Williamson, Richard Ojeda, Indivisible Kentucky and community leaders across the state.

I have a deep appreciation, understanding, and respect for the struggles that working families and rural communities endure every day in Kentucky – the kind that only comes from living it. That’s why I am running a progressive campaign here in Kentucky that focuses on economic and social justice, with a Universal Basic Income as one of my central policy proposals.

We have a plan for UBI, Medicare For All, and Criminal Justice Reform.

Sign our petition for a Criminal Justice Overhaul Petition here.

This campaign is headed down to the wire, and Kentuckians are voting now by mail, with minimal in-person voting on June 23rd. If you’re a Kentuckian, get your ballot here.

Ask me ANYTHING!

———-

My story:

As a Marine Corps officer for over 20 years, I led marines and sailors in wartime and peace. I aided humanitarian efforts and helped separate warring factions during the Somali Civil War, and served as Chief War Planner in the Republic of Korea. My wife Lynn is also a Marine. We retired from the Marine Corps in 2005 and bought Chicken Bristle Farm, a 75-acre farm plot in Lincoln County.

Together we’ve raised livestock and developed the largest all-natural and sustainable asparagus operation in central Kentucky. I worked as a substitute teacher in the local school district and as a reporter and editor for the Interior Journal, the third oldest newspaper in our Commonwealth.

We started our campaign in July. Here’s why.

Here is an AMA we did in May, and here’s one from March.

Here are some links to my Campaign Site and Facebook page.

When Donald Trump tried to stage a coup: Was June 1 the turning point? – Last week our president tried to send the Army into America’s streets. Aides pushed back, but it was a close call

Westlake Legal Group jyBZBbQ1ZWbyZUfSAHvJ6quirUCpC-RNxscf_VNSHGs When Donald Trump tried to stage a coup: Was June 1 the turning point? - Last week our president tried to send the Army into America's streets. Aides pushed back, but it was a close call r/politics

I thunk the alarming thing is that Donald Trump has shown that he will cut and replace anyone who doesn’t give him what he wants. Thankfully he can’t do that with the military/ng, but he was quick to bring in the BoP SORT, who fell in line, and he has the support of the police.

So no, he doesn’t have the support of the military, but he did find his legion of armed militants who are loyal to him, and it shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Thankfully the military outweighs the Police by nearly 2:1 and with the national guard they are basically 3x as large, so it’d be a losing fight if it were to ever transpire; not even considering how poorly the police are trained as compared to the actual military members.

Ideally, we’ll never have to test this situation, and we’ll have a peaceful transfer of power next year, but there is definitely still something big bubbling to the surface of the threads of the US social fabric which can’t be ignored, lest we want it to resurge later.

‘He’s a psychopath’: Trump insider says military will haul Trump out of the White House

Westlake Legal Group KIreggXy7lB6HPtt_969yMrYiUp6vpU6XWDUXqkKUGo 'He's a psychopath': Trump insider says military will haul Trump out of the White House r/politics

Your nightmare scenario is nearly impossible for two reasons. The military is a vast bureaucracy with a strong institutional identity/culture. The conspiracy would require a sufficient majority of generals and admirals to throw in with Trump, and their staffs, and some large number of bureaucrats in the Pentagon. That’s one. Two is that these men and women have taken oaths to protect the constitution and have intense institutional loyalty. With rare exceptions, these are men and women devoted to preserving the integrity of the institution, and that institution maintains its integrity by studiously avoiding direct interference in politics.

So you’d need 60% (number pulled out of my ass, but you get the idea) to hate their institutions enough to destroy them and to break their oaths, as well as their staffs. And they’d need to keep this a secret from the rest of the military until they were ready to enact their plot. And they’d better hope that the civilian workers in the Pentagon are willing to go on this ride with them.

Meanwhile during the past week, the military leadership has spoken through its surrogates (the retired generals and admirals) on a scale we’ve never quite seen. They’ve adamantly put their foot down and condemned Trump for trying to drag the military into his political schemes. When the retired military leadership speaks in unison, in a united front, you need to know that they’re not just offering their personal opinions. They’re communicating the position of the active senior leadership.

Lastly, I believe that there are enough adults in the military leadership that do not like being led by a child. They do their duty, insofar as they must constitutionally. But these are not men and women eager to support an imbecile beyond their constitutional duties.

So, yeah. I’ve thought and worried about this, too. Probably I’ve thought about it too much, given its extreme unlikeliness to pass. No, I’m more worried about civil unrest and Trump’s “paramilitaries” creating havoc. They’re not an existential threat (like the military would be), but they could cause a lot of death and destruction before they’re put down. That’s my nightmare scenario.

Regardless, I think we all expect that Trump will do as much damage to the country as he can on his way out.
