Georgia foster mom charged with murder in hot car deaths of twins, 3

A Georgia foster mom was denied bond on Tuesday after being charged with murder in last month’s hot-car deaths of 3-year-old twin girls in her care.

A magistrate rejected Claudette Foster’s request for bond, according to reports. She was being held in the local jail.

Foster surrendered on an arrest warrant Monday following an investigation by police in Hinesville, Ga., into the Sept. 29 deaths of Raelynn and Payton Keyes. She was also charged with cruelty to children, authorities said.

An autopsy determined that the girls died of heatstroke on a day when the temperature was 92, according to reports.

The car was parked in the backyard of a house that did not belong to Foster.

Police said she wasn’t at the address when the girls died, WTOC-TV reported.

“It just became who is responsible for these children and why were the children not supervised. How were they missing for such a period of time that allowed them to get into the yard and into a vehicle and then eventually pass from a heat stroke?” Detective Bryan Wolfe told the station.

Wolfe said Foster also had custody of Raelynn and Payton’s brothers, the station reported. He said the boys were returned to the custody of the biological parents after they were deemed fit by the state.

Skye Keyes said she lost custody of the four children because they were still grieving the premature death of another child, the New York Post reported two weeks ago.

Texas inmates nabbed after escaping from federal lockup to go on booze run: police

Four Texas federal prison inmates were nabbed over the weekend after escaping to go on a booze run, authorities said.

The quartet was caught late Saturday after being seen leaving the grounds of the Federal Prison Camp in Beaumont and cutting through a ranch, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

“The inmates ran when they saw the Law Enforcement Officers step out of the brush,” the news release said. “All four inmates were quickly taken into custody.”

At the time, the officers were conducting surveillance behind the prison after “repeated reports of prisoners continuing to escape and bring contraband back into the prison complex,” according to the news release.

The confiscated contraband included bottles of whiskey and cell phones, the news release said.

Julian Lemus, 34, Robert Young, 45, Leo Martinez 25, and Silvstre Rico, 35, were charged with escape after U.S. Marshals took custody of them.

In July, two inmates serving long sentences on drug convictions escaped from the camp—but never came back. They haven’t been caught, according to KDFM-TV.

The station reported that it had documented numerous times in the past 18 months where prisoners go in and out to pick up contraband left for them.

North Carolina assisted living facility workers accused of running dementia resident fight club

Three employees at a North Carolina assisted living facility were arrested after police said they ran a fight club with elderly residents with dementia battling it out against each out.

The women were accused in court documents of watching, filming and even encouraging a fight between a 70-year-old woman and a 73-year-old woman at the Danby House assisted living and memory-care facility in Winston-Salem, Fox 8 High Point and other local media reported.

Marilyn Latish McKey, 32, Tonacia Yvonne Tyson, 20, and Taneshia Deshawn Jordan, 26, were each charged with assaulting disabled persons, according to the reports.

Winston-Salem police announced their arrests Friday following an investigation into a June complaint of elder abuse at the facility.

“When you’re talking about someone who can’t take care of themselves, we’ve got to give specific attention to that,” Lt. Gregory Dorn told Fox 8.

Documents from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services show that during the filming of the fight one of the combatants was heard yelling “let go, help me, help me, let go” as McKey, Tyson, and Jordan continued to watch, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.

According to the documents at some point one of the staffers told the resident to “stop screaming (expletive),” the paper reported.

Danby House said in a statement that McKey, Tyson, and Jordan were fired in June when managers were alerted to the situation.

“Additional staff training and a more rigorous vetting process for all new and existing employees at Danby House have been implemented,” the statement said.

New Orleans Hard Rock hotel under construction collapses; at least 1 dead, multiple injured

A Hard Rock Hotel and Casino building under construction in downtown New Orleans partially collapsed on Saturday, killing at least 1 person and injuring several.

Gov. John Bel Edwards confirmed the fatality to reporters near the scene, saying there were several people unaccounted for.

“This remains a very fluid and dangerous situation and every few minutes something is falling,” he said, warning people to stay away.

The New Orleans Fire Department Chief Tim McConnell said they received a call about the fallen building around 9:14 a.m. Saturday morning. He said the top six floors of the building collapsed and that the rest of the construction is still “very unstable.”

He confirmed that one person died and at least three people are still missing. At least 18 people were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

“It’s still a very dangerous situation,” he said. “The crane is still in place but it is unsupported and very dangerous. We are in the process of evacuating the buildings in the perimeter.”

Frenchman nabbed in Scotland not fugitive suspected of killing wife, 4 children

A man seized in Scotland was not the notorious fugitive Frenchman wanted for killing his wife and four children eight years ago, according to reports Saturday.

The arrest Friday of the man suspected to be the fugitive Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes was being called a case of mistaken identity. The arrest happened at Glasgow Airport.

A French police spokesman told The Associated Press that French and Scottish investigators determined Saturday that the fingerprints of the man detained weren’t a match for de Ligonnes.

The bodies were those of Agnès Dupont de Ligonnes and her four children: Arthur, 21, Thomas, 18, Anne, 16, and Benoît, 13. They were found buried with the family’s two Labrador dogs, Agence France-Presse reported.

They had all been shot execution-style, according to the news outlet.

Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes was the only family member never found and became the chief suspect. French police have been searching for him ever since.

Investigators learned de Ligonnes had purchased cement, digging tools and four bags of lime in the days before the killings, AFP reported.

Six days before the bodies were discovered, de Ligonnes spotted in a small town on the Côte d’Azur where he had stayed in a budget hotel.

Turkish forces capture center of key Syrian border town

Turkish forces captured a key Syrian border town after heavy bombardment and fierce fighting Saturday on the fourth day of an offensive that has drawn international condemnation.

Turkey’s Defense Ministry and a war-monitoring group said Turkish troops took Ras al-Ayn, marking a significant gain since the offensive began Wednesday, according to reports.

“Ras al-Ayn’s residential center has been taken under control through the successful operations in the east of Euphrates (River),” the ministry said on Twitter, according to the Associated Press.

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge becomes first person to shatter 2-hour marathon barrier

Superstar runner Eliud Kipchoge broke the elusive 2-hour marathon barrier Saturday—an achievement once considered beyond a human’s reach.

The Olympic champion and world record holder from Kenya clocked 1 hour, 59 minutes and 40.2 seconds at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna.

“Today we went to the Moon and came back to earth!” Kipchoge said on Twitter. “I am at a loss for words for all the support I have received from all over the world.”

He pounded his chest in triumph at the end of the race set up for the attempt.

Kipchoge was helped along by three dozen pacemakers in alternating groups.

The 26.22-mile race also featured a pace car with a laser beam, projecting the ideal position on the road. Cyclists supplied drinks so runners wouldn’t have to slow down.

Running at an average pace of 4:33.5 minutes per mile, Kipchoge was 11 seconds ahead of schedule halfway through his run. He then maintained his tempo until the pacemakers left him for the final 500 meters, where he sped up.

Two Ohio teens charged in death of woman struck by falling 74-pound log

Two 16-year-old boys were reportedly arrested Thursday on charges of reckless homicide in the death last month of a woman who was struck by a falling six-foot log at an Ohio state park.

It was initially believed Victoria Shafer’s death was an accident, but investigators soon determined the log that hit her had been pushed or thrown off a cliff at Hocking Hills State Park in Logan.

Shafer, a 44-year-old professional photographer from Chillicothe, Ohio, was taking photographs with five of her students when the log, weighing 74 pounds, fell more than 75 feet off the cliff and struck her as she was sitting on a staircase, Fickel said. She was killed instantly.

Further investigation led to the arrests and admissions from the two boys that “they were involved in forcing the log over the cliff,” the prosecutor said. He said both boys were from Logan.
