Lightning strike in Poland, heavy thunderstorm blamed for several deaths, injuries in Tatra Mountains

Several people are dead and a dozen reported injured after lightning struck during a thunderstorm in Poland’s southern Tatra Mountains, officials said.

The TOPR rescue service said rescuers were dispatched to Giewont peak where the group of tourists, including children, had been struck by lightning.

The spokeswoman for Krakow’s provincial governor, Joanna Pazdzio, told The Associated Press at least three people, including a child, were killed in the lightning strike. Pazdzio told the AP she was told about the deaths by the leaders of the rescue operation that was taking place Thursday afternoon in the Tatras.

Lightning typically strikes tall objects such as trees and skyscrapers because their tops are closer to the base of the storm cloud, according to The National Severe Storms Laboratory.

“However, this does not always mean tall objects will be struck. It all depends on where the charges accumulate,” according to the agency. “Lightning can strike the ground in an open field even if the tree line is close by.

Lightning, known as a “bolt from the blue,” can also strike from as far away as 25 miles from a thunderstorm cloud, even when there appear to be clear skies, according to the NSSL.

“They can be especially dangerous because they appear to come from clear blue sky,” the agency states.

Ohio man charged with kidnapping after woman escapes from freezer with frostbite, police say

An Ohio man faces kidnapping charges after a woman told police she escaped from a freezer at a Cleveland-area home where she may have been held for days, according to police.

The East Cleveland Police Department said Eric Glaze, 41, was arrested Tuesday on charges of kidnapping and attempted murder after the victim escaped from the home earlier in the day. Authorities were first alerted to an issue in the area at 10 a.m. after the woman crashed her car in Cleveland, allegedly as she was making her escape.

East Cleveland Police Capt. Scott Gardner told FOX8 the woman identified Glaze as an acquaintance and said she attended a party at the home on Sunday.

“She came over here on her own volition and essentially, she was administered some sort of narcotic, according to her,” he told FOX8. “She’s not exactly certain of the events that happened in-between, but she woke up and she was in a freezer that was running.”

Neighbors said a SWAT team arrived at the home to “kick the door in.”

“Why didn’t you just call 911, have the ambulance come and check her out? First, then they would have determined whether she took something, had something, you know what I’m saying, before you just say ‘Oh she’s dead,'” neighbor Pat Phoeson told FOX8.

The incident remains under investigation. Glaze is expected to be arraigned Thursday in East Cleveland Municipal Court, Gardner told Cleveland.com.

Prince Andrew ‘appalled’ by Jeffrey Epstein claims despite video of royal leaving Manhattan mansion in 2010

Britain’s Prince Andrew on Monday tried to bat back renewed scrutiny of his longtime friendship with accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, despite new video showing the royal at the disgraced financier’s Manhattan mansion in 2010 — two years after Epstein pleaded guilty to solicitation of prostitution involving a minor and was forced to register as a sex offender.

Epstein, 66, hanged himself in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on Aug. 10 while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy, the New York City medical examiner said in a report released Friday. The official results followed a week of speculation about the shocking death at the federal facility in Lower Manhattan. Epstein had pleaded not guilty to the latest charges and was being held without bail at the time of his death.

In the wake of the suicide, concerning allegations about the Duke of York’s relationship with Epstein have reemerged, including accusations made by Virginia Giuffre, who claims Epstein paid her to have sex with the prince nearly two decades ago, when she was 17.

EPSTEIN’S ATTORNEYS ‘NOT SATISFIED’ WITH AUTOPSY RESULTS THAT CONCLUDED FINANCIER DIED BY HANGING

In a statement released Monday, Buckingham Palace said Andrew was “appalled by the recent reports of Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged crimes.”

“His Royal Highness deplores the exploitation of any human being and the suggestion he would condone, participate in or encourage any such behavior is abhorrent,” the Palace said.

The statement was released after the Mail on Sunday newspaper obtained a Dec. 6, 2010, video appearing to show Andrew inside Epstein’s opulent Manhattan home as the prince waves goodbye to a young woman.

The video was recorded two years after Epstein’s controversial deal in which he pleaded guilty to a Florida state felony charge of prostitution involving a minor. The terms of the deal included generous work release conditions for Epstein.

The duke was also photographed with Epstein in 2010 in New York’s Central Park after Epstein had finished serving his 18-month prison sentence. The photos sparked controversy at the time and led Andrew to quit his role as a UK trade envoy in 2011, according to Sky News.

PAINTING OF BILL CLINTON IN BLUE DRESS AND HEELS WAS INSIDE JEFFREY EPSTEIN’S NYC MANSION: REPORT

A document dump on the Friday directly preceding Epstein’s death came after a federal appeals court ordered the release of court papers in a defamation lawsuit Giuffre brought against Epstein’s former girlfriend and alleged “madam,” Ghislaine Maxwell. The civil case was eventually settled.

Included in the documents, however, are portions of a deposition from Johanna Sjoberg, who said she was 21 years old in 2001 when Andrew grabbed her breast at Epstein’s mansion in New York.

Sjoberg testified the incident was sparked when “someone” suggested those gathered take a picture, at which point Sjoberg said she and Maxwell went to a closet and grabbed a puppet of Andrew.

“They told us to go get on the couch,” she said in the 2016 deposition. “And so Andrew and Virginia sat on the couch, and they put the puppet, the puppet on her lap. And so then I sat on Andrew’s lap, and, I believe on my own volition, and they took the puppet’s hands and put it on Virginia’s breast, and so Andrew put his on mine.”

She added: “I knew it was Prince Andrew because I knew him as a person.”

The court papers also include a photograph that has been in circulation since 2015 showing Andrew with his arm around Giuffre’s bare waist in London in 2001. Giuffre said she was 17 at the time the photo was taken.

Andrew has denied the charges. In the background is Epstein’s girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell. (U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals)

Buckingham Palace has previously denied allegations the prince had sex with Giuffre, and told The Sun that Andrew was not a party to the U.S. proceedings in which his name had appeared and denied any illegality had occurred.

“Any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors is categorically untrue,” the palace said in a statement at the time.

Epstein’s death caused public and official outrage over how such a high-profile prisoner could have gone unmonitored.

He told her at one point, “I tweeted it.”

His sister, Tina, also replied to his initial tweet saying “Bro-you can’t tweet this stuff until AFTER you call Mom to tell her you’re ok.”

A neighbor told WTEN-TV a “very nice” family of four lived in the home — a mother, father and two daughters.

“One neighbor’s husband helped one of the daughter’s escape from the house after the plane crashed into it,” a neighbor who wished to not be identified told the television station.

State police spokesman Steven Nevel told the Associated Press that two golden retriever puppies and a grown Newfoundland dog escaped the flames that engulfed the house on Union Vale’s South Smith Street.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the Cessna 303 left Sky Acres Airport in LaGrangeville, a mile from the crash, and was headed to Republic Airport on East Farmingdale, Long Island.

DeQuarto said at a news conference that the plane first took off from the Orange County Airport in Montgomery, New York, then stopped to refuel 40 miles away at the Sky Acres Airport before continuing toward Long Island.

DeQuarto added the Cessna had some kind of engine trouble before it struck the side of the two-story house, but he had no other details.

The National Transportation Safety Board said on Twitter that it is investigating the crash.

Washington state trooper finds driver playing ‘Pokemon Go’ on 8 phones

This driver clearly wanted to catch them all.

Authorities in Washington state said a state trooper who pulled over Tuesday to help what he thought was a disabled vehicle instead found a motorist playing “Pokemon Go” on eight different phones.

Washington State Trooper Rick Johnson said on Twitter the driver was stopped on the shoulder of the eastbound lanes of Highway 518 in Burien, located just south of Seattle.

Johnson, a spokesman for the patrol, shared a photo of what Sgt. Kyle Smith discovered in the vehicle: a blue foam square with the eight phones lying in special cutouts.

Smith did not issue a ticket because he did not observe the car moving while the driver was using the phones, according to Johnson.

The sergeant, however, did advise the motorist not to stop along the highway shoulder unless there was an emergency.

Philadelphia police shooting suspect has ‘extensive’ criminal history, commissioner says

The man accused of opening fire on Philadelphia police officers, wounding six and triggering an hours-long standoff that stretched into the night, has been arrested at least a dozen times since turning 18 — a rap sheet the city’s top cop described as an “extensive” criminal history.

With his hands in the air and a police light illuminating his every movement, alleged gunman Maurice Hill, 36, surrendered to authorities just after midnight Thursday, exiting the north Philadelphia neighborhood home he’d barricaded himself in.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross, who said he spent hours Wednesday negotiating with Hill over the phone, said the situation that unfolded “could have been far worse.”

“I am surprised he came out because he was indicating to some that he wasn’t going to do that and that he was not going back,” to prison, Ross told reporters early Thursday regarding some of Hill’s alleged statements. “Many of you have found out about his history. It’s very significant. In fact, he told me on the phone, he used the word ‘extensive,’ he had an extensive criminal history and that he knew the system. This is why he was making the outlandish demands he was making.”

PHILADELPHIA POLICE PELTED WITH OBJECTS, TAUNTED DURING HARROWING SHOOTOUT, STANDOFF: REPORTS

Court documents obtained by FOX29 show Hill’s lengthy criminal history, including a least a dozen arrests since he turned 18.

The 36-year-old has been in and out of prison since 2002 after convictions for such crimes as illegal possession of guns and aggravated assault, according to the documents obtained by FOX29.

In 2013, Hill was convicted of perjury and was sentenced to seven months of probation. Records obtained by FOX29 also showed dozens of serious charges over the years that were later withdrawn in court.

Hill also spent time in federal prison, pleading guilty to federal firearms violations in 2008 after he was caught with a Smith & Wesson .357 and a Taurus PT .45 semiautomatic, according to court records obtained by the Philadelphia Inquirer. Prior felony convictions should have kept him from owning those weapons, and a federal judge sentenced him to four years and seven months in prison, the Inquirer reported.

Hill’s former attorney Shaka Johnson, who represented the 36-year-old in a number of previous cases over the past five years that were mostly of a drug-related nature, told FOX29 he answered the phone at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday and heard Hill on the other end. Johnson said early Thursday that Hill’s first words on the phone were, “I need help.”

“They’re going to kill me. They’re going to kill me,” Johnson recalled Hill saying over the phone.

Johnson, who is a former SWAT officer, said his former client was concerned about his own safety, but also about the wellbeing of his family — including a newborn daughter. Johnson said the police commissioner gave him 30 minutes to convince his former client to surrender peacefully.

“Mr. Hill and I talked about this. They don’t typically, in scenarios like this, take black defendants into custody.  This is what he and I talked about on the phone,” Johnson told FOX29. “I said, ‘My man, this is looking pretty grave for you. The world is watching. That may be one of the things giving police some pause because the world is watching. Use this time wisely.’”

The shooting started around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after officers had entered a home to serve a narcotics warrant. The gunman and police traded shots for hours.

Six officers were shot, but have been released from hospitals. Two officers had been trapped in the house during the standoff but were safely evacuated. Ross said Thursday morning he does not believe the gunman knew two police officers were trapped upstairs in the home along with three civilians.

In addition to the phone call with the attorney, the city’s top cop said that the tear gas ultimately caused the gunman to come out early Thursday. The gunman was taken to a hospital for evaluation and then placed into custody.

The shooting caused Temple University to lock down part of its campus, and several children and staff members were trapped for some time in a nearby daycare. Police have not yet announced formal charges against Hill in Wednesday’s shooting.

President Trump, who was briefed on the shooting, tweeted Thursday morning the shooter “should have never been on the streets.”

“He had a long and very dangerous criminal record. Looked like he was having a good time after his capture, and after wounding so many police,” the president said. “Long sentence – must get much tougher on street crime!”
