Hong Kong demonstrators smash government building amid protests on anniversary of return of Chinese rule

A group of protestors smashed a window and tore down parts of an exterior wall at Hong Kong‘s legislature building Monday amid another round of massive demonstrations in the city on the 22nd anniversary of the return to Chinese rule.

The crowd, comprised of mostly young protesters, could be seen on video using a cargo cart and large poles as battering rams against the glass panel. The demonstrators then tore down part of a glass and metal exterior wall of the government building, carrying away the long strips of metal framework.

Officers were able to eventually commandeer the cart, using riot shields and deploying pepper spray to push back the hundreds of demonstrators gathered around the building.

A handful of protesters made it inside the building, where police awaited them, according to the South China Morning Post. It was not clear how many were inside, and what happened to them.

Hong Kong demonstrators are opposed to a government attempt to change extradition laws that would allow suspects to be sent to China to face trial. The proposed legislation, on which debate has been suspended indefinitely, increased fears of eroding freedoms in the territory, which Britain returned to China on July 1, 1997.

Protesters want the bills formally withdrawn and Hong Kong’s embattled leader, Carrie Lam, to resign.

“I am afraid the march today will be the last protest for Hong Kong,” demonstrator Harley Chuk Kit-ying told the SCMP. “If I still chose not to come, then I would regret for a lifetime.”

The clashes at the government building forced Hong Kong’s leader to watch the annual commemoration of the handover from inside the city’s cavernous convention center instead of outside, according to Sky News.

HONG KONG’S LEADER APOLOGIZES AFTER EXTRADITION BILL FUELS MASSIVE PROTESTS

In an address after a flag-raising ceremony marking the anniversary of the handover, Lam said the recent series of protests and two marches that attracted hundreds of thousands of participants have taught her she needs to listen better to youth and people in general.

“This has made me fully realize that I, as a politician, have to remind myself all the time of the need to grasp public sentiments accurately,” she told the gathering. Lam, who has come under withering criticism for trying to push the extradition legislation through, has pledged to be more responsive to public sentiment.

She insisted her government has good intentions, but said “I will learn the lesson and ensure that the government’s future work will be closer and more responsive to the aspirations, sentiments and opinions of the community.”

Security guards pushed pro-democracy lawmaker Helena Wong out of the room as she shouted at Lam to resign and withdraw the “evil” legislation. She later told reporters she was voicing the grievances and opinions of the protesters, who could not get into the event.

The mass march on Monday was the third demonstration in three weeks after the bill fueled fears that China is eroding Hong Kong’s freedoms.

Jimmy Sham, a leader of the pro-democracy group that organized the march, told the crowd that Lam had not responded to their demands because she is not democratically elected. The leader of Hong Kong is chosen by a committee dominated by pro-China elites.

“We know that Carrie Lam can be so arrogant,” Sham said, rallying the crowd under a blazing sun before the start of the march at Victoria Park. “She is protected by our flawed system.”

Besides the controversial legislature, protestors are also demanding an independent inquiry into police actions during a June 12 protest, when officers used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse a demonstration that blocked the legislature on the day that debate on the bill had been scheduled to resume.

Police have claimed the use of force was justified, but since then have largely adopted softer tactics, even as protesters besieged police headquarters in recent days, pelting it with eggs and spray-painting slogans on its outer walls.

Illinois husband, wife die while diving in Lake Michigan off Wisconsin, officials say

A husband and wife from Illinois both died after a diving incident on Lake Michigan off the coast of Wisconsin on Friday, according to officials.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it was called Friday afternoon to the dive boat about 17 miles off Milwaukee about a woman who was unresponsive after surfacing.

Officials said the woman, identified as 53-year-old Susan Winn, came up about 300 feet rapidly, was unresponsive and did not survive.

Her husband, 53-year-old James Winn, did not resurface from his dive, according to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

“This person was diving which means they had a buoyancy suit on, which means they may not be floating on the surface but maybe a couple feet under the water at which point it is even harder to find,” Coast Guard Lt. Phillip Gurtler told FOX6.

In the wake of the two deaths, the Coast Guard is reminding those heading out on the lake this summer to have a plan in place when heading out on the water.

“Make sure you have a float plan that if you don’t come back, someone knows where you are and when you should be coming back,” Gurtler told FOX6.

The deaths are now under investigation by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.

Salmonella outbreak linked to fresh papayas sickens at least 62 people in 8 states, CDC says

Dozens of people in eight U.S. states have been infected with a strain of salmonella after eating fresh papayas imported from Mexico, according to federal health officials.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that 62 people have so far been infected with the strain of Salmonella Uganda, of which 23 have been hospitalized.

The illnesses started on dates ranging from Jan. 14 to June 8, with most of the illnesses occurring since April.

“Epidemiologic evidence and early product distribution information indicate that whole, fresh papayas imported from Mexico and sold in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island are a likely source of this outbreak,” the CDC said.

While no deaths attributed to Salmonella have been reported, the agency is advising that consumers in those states not eat any, whole fresh papayas from Mexico. Health officials are also advising people not to eat fruit salads or other mixes that include papayas from Mexico.

“If you aren’t sure the papaya you bought is from Mexico, you can ask the place of purchase,” the agency states. “When in doubt, don’t eat the papaya. Throw it out.”

Of those sickened so far, 24 were in New York, 14 were in Connecticut and 12 were in New Jersey.

Symptoms of salmonella usually develop 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria, with most people developing diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.

“In some people, the illness may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized,” according to the CDC. “Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other places in the body.”

Federal health officials say that children younger than 5-years-old, pregnant women, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.

The CDC estimates that Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths in the U.S. every year. Food is the source for about 1 million of those illnesses, according to the agency.

Good Samaritans, ex-rugby player praised for helping Texas police officer take down suspect

A police officer in Texas got a suspected criminal off the streets last week thanks to a group of good Samaritans, including one who put an end to a foot chase by literally tackling the man.

The Lewisville Police Department said on Facebook the incident happened on June 22 as Officer Jeff Carey spotted a man rummaging through a vehicle that turned out to be stolen. As Carey got out of his vehicle to approach the man, he started running and got away.

About two hours later, police said Carey spotted the suspect outside a restaurant and jumped out of his vehicle to take after him on foot.

The foot chase was spotted by Michael Barrera, who’d just returned to the restaurant after having breakfast with family when his sister forgot something there. The former rugby player told FOX4 the opportunity to help out just presented itself to him.

“I played a lot of rugby in my days, you know, I’m a little older now, I still got little wheels,” Barrera told FOX4. “It’s like a rugby ball, go after it. You know, the game ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”

Carey said as he was chasing the suspect, he spotted a “blur” on his left side, which turned out to be Barrera tackling the suspect.

“As soon as I put the handcuffs on the suspect, my mind goes straight to my vehicle,” Carey said.

Europe heatwave breaks records in Germany, Czech Republic as region sizzles

A scorching heatwave is baking western and central Europe, setting new temperature records for June in Germany and the Czech Republic as forecasters warn it will get hotter before the heat dissipates.

German weather agency Deutscher Wetterdienst said Wednesday a preliminary reading showed it reached 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit in Coschen, Germany, near the Polish border. The new record is a tenth-of-a-degree higher than the previous national record for June, set in 1947 in southwestern Germany.

Radzyn, Poland, also recorded a new national high of 100.7 Fahrenheit, while Doksany in the Czech Republic experienced high temperatures of 101.3 Fahrenheit.

The searing temperatures in Germany caused authorities to imposed speed limits of 62 mph or 75 mph on several short stretches of the highway until further notice in the eastern Saxony-Anhalt state. Those stretches usually don’t have speed limits, but officials are concerned the high heat could cause expressway surfaces to buckle.

A forest fire about 70 miles southeast of Berlin has ripped through nearly 300 acres of land near the town of Lieberoser, triggering a large emergency response, Sky News reported.

In France, more than half the country has placed the heat warning level at orange — the second highest alert — as temperatures up to 102 Fahrenheit are forecast for the Paris area later this week.

Because such high temperatures are rare in France, most homes and many buildings do not have air conditioning. Multiple days of extreme heat and warm nights will not allow buildings to cool down and will also be combined with high humidity levels.

French charities and local officials were providing extra help for the elderly, the homeless and the sick this week, remembering some 15,000 people, many of them elderly, died in France during a 2003 heat wave.

“The difference with 2003 is the very high humidity this year, which means it will feel much hotter than the temperature shown by the thermometer and so the discomfort felt will be greater than in 2003,” France’s Health Minister Agnès Buzyn told reporters.

In Paris on Wednesday, authorities banned older cars from the city for the day since heat aggravates pollution problems. Regional authorities estimated the measure, targeting gasoline vehicles from 2005 or older and diesel cars from 2010 or older, affects nearly 60 percent of vehicles circulating in the Paris region.

The heatwave is being caused by a plume of dry, hot air moving north from Africa over continental Europe this week.

Professor Hannah Cloke, a natural hazards researcher at Britain’s University of Reading, said the heat along with a build-up of humidity was a “potentially lethal combination.”

“Children, the elderly and people with underlying health conditions are particularly at risk,” she told The Associated Press.

Louisiana teen accused of killing father was reportedly kidnapped by him a decade ago

A Louisiana teenager who was arrested earlier this month after allegedly fatally shooting his father was actually kidnapped by him over a decade ago, according to family members.

Anthony Templet, 17, was arrested on June 3 after he shot his father multiple times when the two got into a fight in the early-morning hours.

Templet had told police his father was drunk and woke him up around 3 a.m.; the teenager locked himself in his father’s bedroom with two handguns, according to an arrest report obtained by The Advocate.

As his father banged on the door, Templet eventually unlocked it and shot his father as he “asked Anthony to stop,” according to the report obtained by the paper.

The 17-year-old then called 911 to report what he did, and said their relationship had been “dysfunctional.”

A woman who told WAFB she was Templet’s sister said that he had actually been taken from their Texas home in 2008 by her father, Burt Templet.

“He has been secluded and abused all these years by his own father,” his sister Natasha Templet told the television station. “My brave brother had to defend himself for the last time against that evil man.”

In court records obtained by KHOU, Burt Templet was charged with assault three times between 2001 and 2002. Two of those cases, however, were dismissed by a judge. Five years later, his ex-wife filed for a protective order before the family reported Anthony as missing.

“I can only imagine what Anthony’s been through. When he was a baby, Burt would hold him in his arms while abusing my mother,” Natasha said.

Burt eventually married another woman in Baton Rouge but she reportedly left him earlier this year and filed for a protective order over alleged abuse.

The 17-year-old remains jailed at a juvenile facility in north Louisiana after being arrest on a count of manslaughter.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore III told The Advocate on Tuesday that Templet has not been formally charged in the case, and that his office will present all relevant information to a grand jury, which will determine which charges may be appropriate.
