Buttigieg wins Iowa after caucus recount, state Dem party says

The results of the Iowa caucus remain unchanged even after a recount by the Iowa Democratic Party (IDP), which was requested by the two Democratic front-runners, former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

“The recount process resulted in no change to National Delegate allocation,” the IDP said in a statement Thursday.

Buttigieg remained the winner in the state, with a marginally higher delegate count than Sanders: Buttigieg had 562.954 and Sanders had 562.021.

DEMOCRACY 2020 DIGEST: NEVADA DEMS SCRAMBLING TO AVOID REPEAT OF IOWA CAUCUS DEBATE

The caucus debacle that ensued on Feb. 3 — caused in part by technical glitches with an app introduced with the intention of simplifying voter tabulations — prompted backlash from across the country and forced the state party chairman Troy Price to resign just days after the fiasco.

The IDP said the party recounted presidential preference cards — which serve as a paper trail for voter choices in the event of a recount — from 23 unique precincts, including 14 submissions from Buttigieg and 10 submissions from Sanders, with one overlapping.

“As a result of the recount, county-level delegate allocation changed in 19 precincts,” the IDP said.

In the days following the first in the nation caucus, when no clear winner was evident, all of the Democratic hopefuls packed up and moved on to New Hampshire, and then Nevada, both of which Sanders secured with sweeping leads with Buttigieg following closely behind.

Democratic contenders vying for the party’s nomination will face off in the South Carolina primary on Feb. 29, the last of the early-voting states before Super Tuesday.

Who is Ayatollah Khamenei? What to know about Iran’s supreme leader

Westlake Legal Group AP20036461364275 Who is Ayatollah Khamenei? What to know about Iran's supreme leader Vandana Rambaran fox-news/world/conflicts/iran fox-news/world fox news fnc/world fnc f8583ac3-c0b4-5cf8-8708-808dce8f2dba article

Iran‘s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has emerged as one of the most powerful Iranian leaders of the last century and wields control over all aspects of the country’s government, military and media.

Khamenei was born on July 16, 1939, to a traditional family. His father was a cleric, and Khamenei began a religious education at a young age.

WHO ARE THE PEOPLE’S MUJAHEDEEN OF IRAN?

He rose to power after Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi was ousted in 1979, an initiative that Khamenei championed for many years. He served as minister of defense and then supervisor of the Revolutionary Guards.

After surviving an assassination attempt that paralyzed his right arm, Khamenei was asked by revolutionary elites to run for president. He successfully did so and was elected in 1981.

He served the maximum two terms and has been Iran’s supreme leader since 1989, making him the second-longest-serving autocrat in the Middle East as well as the second-longest-serving Iranian leader of the last century.

The majority of his presidency was enveloped in turmoil, as the Iran-Iraq War brewed, which killed an estimated half a million Iranian and Iraqi soldiers. After serving out his term, he later became the country’s supreme leader, despite pushback from some senior clerics that felt he was unqualified for the position.

During the 1979 revolution in Iran, Khamenei preached about overthrowing the shah and resisting the United States and the western world in an effort to reaffirm Islamic values in the Iranian government and avoid any influences that threaten to undermine his autocratic rule and the self-sufficiency of his country.

Despite being skeptical of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, Khamenei reluctantly gave both President Rouhani and the deal — brokered under the Obama administration — his approval. Since President Trump pulled out of the deal and exerted hefty sanctions on Iran in an effort to curb their nuclear proliferation, Khamenei has grown increasingly angered and disdainful at the U.S., which he has described as “deceitful, untrustworthy and backstabbing.”

The economic nosedive Iran has faced in recent years has further escalated tensions between Washington and Tehran and encouraged Khamenei to preach resistance of the U.S. In a recent speech he uttered the word “resistance” 70 times and said that it, “unlike surrender, leads to the retreat of the enemy.”

North Carolina woman allegedly assaulted air marshal, threatened to ‘stab everyone on the plane. … I’m Palestinian’

A North Carolina woman who said she wanted to “stab everyone on the plane” then commit suicide was charged with assaulting a federal air marshal on board a flight that landed in Virginia’s Dulles International Airport on Saturday after he attempted to stop her from entering the plane’s lavatory with a lighter.

Flight attendants aboard the United Airlines plane from Frankfurt, Germany, said they were alerted that a flight lavatory smoke detector had been activated while in the air and found Dana Ghazi Mustafa in the bathroom. They told Mustafa that smoking on board the aircraft is prohibited by federal regulations and asked her to return to her seat, which she did, according to court filings.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT REPORTEDLY FIRED FOR BEING 1 POUND ‘OVERWEIGHT’ LOSES COURT CASE

Once seated, Mustafa was seen crying and told flight attendants that she was flying home to see her family but said they had died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Flight attendants moved the 27-year-old to another seat to make her more comfortable.

While in her reassigned seat, Mustafa allegedly punched the TV monitor on her seatback and threw a coin at the bulkhead.

She was later seen getting up and walking to the rear cabin of the plane while striking the flint of her lighter.

A federal air marshal aboard the plane who saw Mustafa with the lighter said in a sworn affidavit that she smelled of alcohol.

Flight attendants tried to stop Mustafa from entering the lavatory with the lighter, but she pushed the attendants and tried to shut the door.

She also fought back against two air marshals on board who attempted to restrain her and place handcuffs on her, and Mustafa repeatedly kicked one of the marshals in the shins.

She was eventually handcuffed and seated next to the air marshals who found a half-empty liter of Absolut vodka visible at the top of her open bag and said Mustafa complained that “I was allowed to drink my duty-free bottle of vodka on my previous flight.”

Mustafa also threatened to stab the air marshal and said: “I’m going to stab everyone on the plane then kill myself. I’m Palestinian! That’s how we get down,” according to court documents.

When the plane landed in Virginia, FBI agents arrested Mustafa, who admitted that the story about her family’s deaths was a lie.

Former presidential candidate Marianne Williamson announced Sunday that she is endorsing Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., for president, with the spiritual author saying she’s “honored” to support him.

Williamson, a Democrat who ended her own bid for the nomination in January stating she didn’t want to “get in the way of a progressive candidate winning” the early primary and caucuses, previously had supported the self-proclaimed Democratic socialist Sanders in his first run for president in 2016.

Williamson made the announcement in her home state of Texas, at a Sanders rally in Austin.

Sanders picked up victories in all three of the earliest state contests, most recently clinching Nevada and solidifying his status as the party’s frontrunner.

“It’s time for us to take a stand with Bernie,” Williamson said at the event. “It’s our turn now.”

She later went on to release a statement saying of Sanders “I am honored to endorse him.”

“What happened in Nevada on Saturday was extraordinary and the energy is unquestionable with Bernie,” the statement read, pointing to Sanders’ nearly 40-percent lead in the state’s caucuses. “A 40-year-old trend of capitalism without conscience — corporate elites and their errand boys in government — have created the inevitable blowback in the form of a political revolution. That revolution is one that Bernie Sanders now leads.”

The remaining primary contenders are moving on to South Carolina’s contest this coming Saturday, the last of the primaries before Super Tuesday.

Bernie Sanders unveils new plan for free child care, pre-K up to age four, funded by wealth tax

Presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., unveiled a new plan for universal child care if he is elected in November, saying in an interview airing Sunday that a wealth tax would pay for it.

The proposal would offer free child care from infancy to pre-kindergarten up to the age of four, Sanders told Anderson Cooper on CBS News’ “60 Minutes.”

The idea was yet another in a slew of progressive plans laid out by the self-proclaimed democratic-socialist, plans that he said would be funded by increased taxation on America’s wealthy.

BERNIE SANDERS DEFENDS FIDEL CASTRO’S SOCIALIST CUBA: ‘UNFAIR TO SIMPLY SAY EVERYTHING IS BAD’

Sanders expressed his disdain for opponents — even some within his own party running against him for the presidential nomination — who have expressed skepticism at the possibility that enough funding existed for all of his ideas, which also included “Medicare-for-all,” free college tuition and eliminating student debt.

“I get a little bit tired of hearing my opponents saying– ‘Gee, how you going to pay for a program that impacts and helps children or working-class families or middle-class families? How you going to pay for that?'” Sanders said. “And yet, where are people saying, ‘How are you going to pay for over $750 billion on military spending?’ How you going to pay for a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the one-percent in large corporations, which was what Trump did? When you help the billionaires and you help Wall Street, ‘Hey! Of course we can pay for it. That’s what America’s supposed to be about.’ Well, I disagree.”

Although Sanders would not put a dollar amount to each of his proposals, he said he was confident that the funding existed to put them into place if he’s elected in November.

“Obviously, those are expensive propositions, but we have done our best on issue after issue– in paying for them,” he said, estimating that eliminating private insurance companies and socializing the health-care system in America — theoretically allowing patients the ability to see any doctor — would cost an estimated $30 trillion.

“It will be substantially less than letting the current system go,” he added.

“I can’t rattle off to you every nickel and every dime, but we have accounted for… you talked about ‘Medicare-for-all.’ We have options out there that will pay for it.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders, the frontrunner for the Democrats’ presidential nomination, doubled down on his support for some of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro’s policies, saying in an interview that aired Sunday, “it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad.”

Speaking to CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, pointed to social welfare programs introduced under Castro’s regime that he described as redeeming, despite the communist dictator’s often repressive human-rights violations against Cubans.

“We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?” Sanders told Anderson Cooper.

Fidel Castro relinquished power to his brother, Raúl, in 2011; Fidel died in 2016.

Some Republicans jumped on Sanders’ comments. “It really makes a difference when those you murder at the firing squad can read & write,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted.

BERNIE SANDERS SEEN IN UNEARTHED 1986 VIDEO RECALLING EXCITEMENT OVER CASTRO’S REVOLUTION IN CUBA

In a resurfaced speech given at the University of Vermont in 1986, Sanders praised the socialist policies implemented in Cuba by the Castro regime and criticized bipartisan efforts in the U.S. to tamp down on Castro’s spread of communism.

While Sanders said in the new interview he “condemns” any human rights violations Castro committed, he also took aim at President Trump for his unlikely friendships with some dictators or strongman leaders, including North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

“I do not think that Kim Jong Un is a good friend,” Sanders said. “I don’t trade love letters with a murdering dictator. Vladimir Putin, not a great friend of mine.”

Despite victories in all three of the earliest state contests, the Vermont senator has faced criticism from other party contenders, including billionaire Michael Bloomberg, who lambasted his socialist policies declaring they would never fare in a November matchup with Trump.

Sanders went on to define his brand of democratic socialism, which has tapped into a more progressive ideology that has been gaining traction with young voters across the country.

“When Donald Trump was a private businessman in New York, he got $800 million in tax breaks and subsidies to build luxury housing. That’s called corporate socialism. What democratic socialism is about is saying, ‘Let’s use the federal government to protect the interests of working families,'” he explained.

Trump has used Sanders’ policy initiatives, including “Medicare-for-all” and free college tuition and elimination of student loan debt, to take aim at the senator, even going so far as to label him a communist.

“You know what? We will fight back,” Sanders said of these attacks. “This is what we will bring up… that the president of the United States is a pathological liar, and it is increasingly clear that many people just don’t believe anything that he says. He is a fraud. I look forward to taking him on.”

Israel hit with Palestinian rocket barrage after Gaza border confrontation with militants

Palestinian militants fired approximately 30 rockets into Israel on Sunday evening, Israeli military officials said, near the end of a tense weekend that also saw Palestinian militants apparently trying to plant a bomb at the Gaza border, along with Israeli strikes hitting targets in Gaza and Syria.

A Palestinian Islamic Jihad group claimed responsibility for the rocket attack on Israel.

Earlier, two Palestinian militants approached the fence on the northern side of the Gaza border, appearing to plant a bomb. Israeli defense forces opened fire, killing one of the militants — who was said to have belonged to the Islamic Jihad group.

Israeli military officials then sent a tank and front loader into the Gaza strip and scooped up the body using a shovel attached to the vehicle, an image that quickly circulated on social media and caused Hamas to cry foul and accuse Israel of abusing the body.

Israeli Defense Minister Naftali Bennett rejected the criticism, noting that Hamas has been holding the bodies of two Israeli soldiers since they were killed in the 2014 Gaza war.

“I back the military, which killed the terrorists and collected the body,” he said. “That’s what should be done and that is what was done.”

The rocket launch seemed to be retaliatory in nature.

Israeli defense forces said at least 10 of the rockets had been intercepted using their Iron Dome defense system while the others fell without causing major damage.

The Israeli military struck back on Islamic Jihad operatives with aircrafts, firing at an empty Palestinian training camp in the Gaza strip, and on two Palestinian rocket teams resulting in injuries among the Palestinians.

The Gaza health ministry reported that four Palestinians were treated at the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City for wounds resulting from the strikes.

Meanwhile, some Palestinians said Hamas rulers failed to respond forcefully enough to Israel. Hamas has been working with Egyptian mediators to arrange a cease-fire along the Gaza strip and have been holding back on attacking Israel. Despite this, Islamic Jihad has continued to try carrying out attacks in the region.

Israel and the Islamic Jihad group engaged in a heavy round of fighting last November after the Israeli military killed a top Islamic Jihad commander, but the region has remained relatively quiet in recent months leading up to Sunday’s attack.

In a rare acknowledgment of operations in neighboring Syria, Israeli officials also said their warplanes attacked targets of the Islamic Jihad group south of Damascus in addition to Gaza. They said the sites had been used for “research and development of armaments” manufactured in Syria and the Gaza Strip, and also produced dozens of kilograms of rocket fuel each month.

Who is Vladimir Putin, the Russian president and ex-KGB officer?

Russian President Vladimir Putin was born in Leningrad, now modern-day St. Petersburg, on Oct. 7, 1952.

He grew up in a communal apartment and his father was a factory foreman. Putin graduated from Leningrad State University in 1975 with a law degree and joined the KGB — the main security agency operating at the behest of the Soviet Union, where he became a Soviet intelligence officer.

In 1983, he married Lyudmilla and the couple had two daughters together. They were later divorced in 2013.

Putin was stationed in East Germany for much of the late 1980s and began working for his alma mater in 1990.

In 1996, Putin moved to Moscow and started working for the Russian government under President Boris Yeltsin. He became the head of the Federal Security Service (FSS), the successor agency to the KGB, in 1998. One year later, Putin became the acting prime minister under Yeltsin’s administration. Just a few months later, Yeltsin stepped down from his position and Putin became the acting president of Russia.

Since winning the presidential election in 2000, Putin has remained Russia’s dominant political figure, tightening control over the media, marginalizing his party’s opposition, and adopting a nationalist and anti-Western course for decades.

He was reelected in 2004 and vacated the presidency in 2008 due to term limits, but became prime minister by his successor Dmitry Medvedev. He won the presidential election again in 2012. Two years later he annexed Crimea from Ukraine.

President Trump’s relationship with Putin has repeatedly come under scrutiny since Trump’s election to the White House, especially after Special Counsel Robert Mueller embarked on a two-year probe to investigate potential collusion between Trump’s campaign associates and the Russian government to influence the 2016 election.

Further questions arose about their unusual alliance when House Democrats launched an investigation into potential impropriety of a phone call between Trump and the leader of Ukraine, in which they alleged Trump attempted to pressure the Ukrainian president to launch an investigation into 2020 presidential hopeful Joe Biden in exchange for foreign military aid. Despite the probe leading to Trump’s impeachment in the House of Representatives, and then subsequent acquittal in the Senate, reports swirled that Trump peddled the theory of Ukrainian election meddling at the behest of Putin.

The friendly alliance has caused lawmakers to bristle at Trump’s refusal to explicitly acknowledge Russia’s role in breaching American election security systems, despite data from intelligence officials proving they did so.

Former South Bend Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, D-Ind., and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., exchanged fighting words at Wednesday night’s Democratic debate after Klobuchar decried that Buttigieg implied she is “dumb” for not knowing the president of Mexico’s name.

In an interview with Telemundo last week, three of the Democratic contenders — Klobuchar, Buttigieg and billionaire Tom Steyer — were asked who the president of Mexico is and none but Buttigieg was able to correctly name President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who is often referred to as AMLO.

Buttigieg brought up the incident on the debate stage in Las Vegas just days ahead of the state’s caucuses that will see droves of crucial Latino voters at the polls and drew the ire of Klobuchar.

“You’re on the committee that oversees border security. You’re on the committee that does trade. You’re literally part of the committee that’s overseeing these things,” Buttigieg said, pointing to his rival’s placement on a number of Senate committees.

“Are you trying to say that I’m dumb? Are you mocking me here, Pete?” Klobuchar said to Buttigieg, clearly irked.

“He’s basically saying that I don’t have the experience to be president of the United States,” she added.

In the midst of the heated exchange, former Vice President Joe Biden interjected in an attempt to highlight his extensive experience with foreign leaders, saying, “I’m the only one who knows this man! I met with him!”

The AMLO bungle further bolstered Buttigieg’s claims that despite his lack of experience in Washington, unlike Klobuchar, he is still knowledgable enough to be the Democratic Party’s nominee.

“You’re staking your candidacy on your Washington experience,” Buttigieg chided Klobuchar, later pointing out she was “not able to speak to literally the first thing about the politics of the country” she was asked about.
