D.C.: If you’re stuck in traffic today, blame climate activists

Westlake Legal Group CalifTraffic715 D.C.: If you’re stuck in traffic today, blame climate activists washington D.C. Traffic The Blog protest Climate Change beltway

As if Mondays aren’t bad enough already, our friends in Washington, D.C. may have yet another headache to contend with this morning. If you work in or around the District and have to commute to work, you may find some of the highways and surface streets shut down. The climate change protesters who have been up in arms around the world all weekend are still in town. Their stated plan (along with the name of the group organizing this fiasco) is “Shut Down D.C.” And that’s what they hope to do. (WaPo)

A broad coalition of climate activists called “Shut Down D.C.” plans to block streets throughout the nation’s capital during the Monday morning commute to draw attention to climate change.

The protest is timed to coincide with the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York, at which climate activists and leaders, including 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, are slated to speak. It follows a strike across six continents Friday and a youth conference at the United Nations on Saturday.

The traffic shutdown is meant to send a particular message to D.C.’s powerful political elite, according to Liz Butler, an organizer for Shut Down D.C. and vice president of organizing and strategic allegiances for Friends of the Earth.

There’s already a picture circulating of some kid carrying a sign in the middle of the street that reads, “Sorry for the inconvenience. We are trying to save the world.” Do I really need to point out yet again what a monumentally bad strategy this is?

Yes, we’ve been through this before. It plays out the same way whether we’re talking about Black Lives Matter, gun confiscation enthusiasts or any of the other so-called “social justice” groups. And now we have the climate alarmists doing it.

The whole idea of holding a protest, march, etc. is to get your message out, draw attention from members of the public who might not be aware of the issue and hopefully win over more support. Short of drowning people’s kittens and puppies in front of them, I can’t think of many other worse ways to win over hearts and minds than to strand someone in their car in a totally unnecessary traffic jam while advertising the cause you are supporting. Commuting around D.C. (as well as most other major cities) is already a nightmare. It only takes one distracted jerk or unfortunate accident to bring the Beltway grinding to a halt.

People seriously dread this. (One of the main reasons I am extremely grateful to be among those who work from home.) An accidental traffic jam is bad enough. But when commuters see your sign and realize you did this intentionally, the only emotion you will instill in them is hatred. Specifically, hatred of you. Even someone who might have been sympathetic toward the cause of combatting climate change is going to come away from this remembering you and your cause with a seething fury.

March on the side of the roads. Hang banners on the overpasses. Get a permit and gather in the park to get your message out. But “shutting down” the District during a Monday rush hour will produce precisely the opposite of the desired effect. Stop being stupid.

“She’s Hollywood”: AOC’s Primary Challenger Is Fired Up, Says ‘Squad’ Leader Is Absentee Congresswoman

Queens activist Badrun Khan, a Democratic primary challenger to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), speaks on Fox News – 9/19/19. Screen grab via Fox News.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stunned political observers in June 2018 when she defeated longtime Congressional Rep. Joe Crowley in the NY-14 Democratic primary. Since that time, she’s been given non-stop fawning media coverage, is treated like a queen by radical progressive activists, and her endorsement has become a must-have for any staunchly liberal/socialist Democrat running for election or reelection.

But while several Republicans announced their intentions earlier this year to run for the opportunity to battle her in the 2020 general election, you only heard murmurings and anonymous reports about potential Democratic primary challengers.

Until now.

Queens activist and Democrat Badrun Khan has thrown her hat into the ring, and appeared on Fox News Thursday to talk about her candidacy. She also explained why she thought Ocasio-Cortez should be a one-term Congresswoman. Here’s what Khan said:

Activist Badrun Khan, who is challenging Ocasio-Cortez for the Democratic nomination to represent New York’s 14th Congressional District, said the media darling is not doing enough to represent her constituents.

“She is Hollywood and Washington,” said Khan, the daughter of Bengali immigrants.

What’s more, she said the worldview of Ocasio-Cortez is not indicative of their Queens constituency, claiming: “They aren’t looking for socialism.”

Khan also blasted AOC for an issue we’ve read about in the New York media before: allegations that she’s an absentee representative.

“She’s never in the district. She’s not sure what’s happening in the district. She opened her [district] office pretty late after she was elected,” said Khan.

The “Government Reform” section of her website contains this not-so-veiled swipe at Ocasio-Cortez:

“Congressional Representatives fall in love with media and Washington DC and fail to represent the District they promised to serve. Badrun will never lose sight of who sent her to Washington and who she is responsible to.

In addition to criticizing the freshman Congresswoman on Fox News for her role in Amazon canceling major expansion plans in New York City that would have brought in 25,000 jobs, Khan also questioned the Green New Deal and some of AOC’s other pet issues due to their high cost:

Khan said she wants to enhance Medicare and Social Security but appeared to take a shot at “Medicare-for-all” — a plan championed by progressives like Ocasio-Cortez.

“I am not a politician, I am a mother,” Khan said. “Everything is easier said — how is it going to be done?”

Watch her interview below:

Though AOC was a bartender before she was elected, she did have some political background. She was a volunteer for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 primary campaign against Hillary Clinton, and she also interned for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA).

From what I’ve read about her, Khan has no political background outside of being an activist in her community (which is not a bad thing).

She definitely will have an uphill battle to win the primary, considering AOC’s connections and money machine, but stranger things have happened.

It would be nice for a Republican to win the district but it’s heavily Democratic, so whoever wins the primary will win the general election. While I’m not a Democrat and don’t support Democrats, one who Republicans could work with and who seems to have a decent degree of understanding about fiscal responsibility would be much more preferable than the politically opportunistic drama queen who represents NY-14 now.

An anti-Trump veterans group called “Common Defense” posted video to their Twitter account Thursday of two men described as combat veterans aggressively following Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) to an elevator while questioning his support for President Trump.

The group, which bills itself as “the country’s only veteran-led grassroots organization committed to engaging, training and mobilizing veterans to elect accountable leaders and promote progressive values in 2020 and beyond”, is in favor of impeaching the President. Crenshaw, a wounded war veteran who served multiple tours in Afghanistan, is not.

In a teaser they published along with the video, the group states “GOP Rep @DanCrenshawTX hid in an elevator today when combat vets confronted him about his support for Donald Trump.” Watch the 2+ minute video below:

“[We have confirmed] the identities of the men as U.S. Army veterans Jason Hurd, 40, and Alan Pitts, 36, a Purple Heart recipient,” Newsweek reported.

It’s not my place to get in the middle of a “veteran vs. veteran” battle, but this video angered me for a number of reasons:

1) Crenshaw did not “hide” from anyone. The video clearly shows attempts by Crenshaw, who maintained his composure, to engage in conversation within 20 seconds of the encounter starting.

Once they made it to the elevator, Crenshaw pointed out it was a “members only” elevator. There’s a reason it’s stipulated that way for members of Congress and their staff that pretty much everyone should understand (safety and security, hello?). It had nothing to do with “hiding.”

2) As Crenshaw pointed out, they were there to make a video, not to have a dialogue. This was to promote their group, not to have a substantive back and forth. Crenshaw tried a number of times to respond to what was being said but the guy stalking him just continued to talk over him, actually questioning his commitment to his country.

3) At one point, the guy on Crenshaw’s heels says “you need to get your courage back, man.” He said this to a Navy SEAL who lost his eye in combat, and who then decided to continue to serve his country once he came home by running for Congress. I don’t think he needs a lecture on courage from anyone.

I asked people on my Twitter feed to give me their takes on what happened, and was especially interested in takes from military veterans. Here are some of the responses:

(Duke confirmed with me that he actually meant to say Crenshaw “would not owe political allegiance” to combat veterans even if he wasn’t one himself.)

Sadly, instead of doing actual journalism on this story, Newsweek decided to write about it using the very same biased take Common Defense gave:

Apologies for the typos in that last tweet. By that point I was really annoyed, not just with how Common Defense had falsely portrayed what happened, but with Newsweek treating the group’s spin as the gospel truth.

This is clearly a case of a blockbuster story not coming anywhere close to living up to the hype. The actual footage shows a far different story than how both Common Defense and Newsweek spun it. In reality, Crenshaw handled what happened in a much classier way than how others in a similar position would have.

In the aftermath of 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke’s “Hell yes” comments at last Thursday’s Democratic debate on the issue of his gun confiscation plan, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took Politifact to task on the Twitter machine for a fact check they did on him during their Senate race last year.

Here’s what Cruz wrote last Friday:

In a nutshell, in March 2018 Politifact rated as “false” a claim made in a song Cruz debuted the night of the Texas primaries which asserted that Beto “wants to take our guns”:

O’Rourke backs a ban on the future sale and possession of about 200 kinds of guns including AR-15-style rifles. But the legislation he’s cosponsoring doesn’t provide for officials to take any guns held lawfully at the time the measure becomes law.

We rate this Cruz claim False.

Fast forward to this week, where Politifact didn’t take too kindly to Cruz questioning their supposed impartiality. So of course they decided to fact check him in an effort to clear the air:

O’Rourke’s position may have changed, but that doesn’t affect the rating of our 2018 fact-check. We rate statements based on the information known at the time the statement is made.
[…]
Cruz also inaccurately called PolitiFact a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Democratic National Committee. PolitiFact is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit newsroom that fact-checks Democrats and Republicans alike. PolitiFact Texas is run in partnership with the Austin American-Statesman, a daily newspaper. The same week Cruz called PolitiFact part of the DNC, several Democratic campaigns publicly complained that fact-checkers were giving unfair scrutiny to Democratic messaging and candidate comments.

PolitiFact seeks to present true facts, unaffected by agenda or biases. The reason we publish findings is to give citizens the information they need to govern themselves in a democracy.

Unsurprisingly, Cruz is not backing down and has posted several more tweets since then calling their “independent” status into question:

Cruz’s whole point back when he debuted the song and now is that the slow erosion of 2nd Amendment rights is all part of a ‘step-by-step process” by Democrats to eventually take your guns away, as Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) explained last week:

“When you really understand what the endgame of the left is, it’s literally mandatory buybacks or as I call it: confiscation. This is a step-by-step process for them,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told The Hill Thursday when asked about the debate over expanded background checks for firearms sales.

Not only that, but Politifact has absolutely blown it on a number of rulings they’ve posted just this year alone on claims made by and about Democrats. It doesn’t matter that they occasionally rule against the left – because the exception is not the rule here. On balance, they rule far more often in favor of Democrats than they do Republicans, and it’s not because Democrats are “more honest” than Republicans.

Lastly, Politifact really has no one else to blame but themselves for the belief they are owned by the DNC when you consider how they badly bungled their initial ruling on President Obama’s claim of “if you like your health insurance plan you can keep it.” They ended up backtracking and turning that one into their “Lie of the Year” in 2013.

Again, they’ve brought this on themselves.

Beto O’Rourke’s gun confiscation plan and “Hell yes” comments from last week’s Democratic debate have been the talk of the Washington, DC media circuit and political commentators for the last week.

Many Democratic House and Senate members and candidates for president have been asked to weigh in on where they stand on what O’Rourke has proposed. Some oppose it on grounds the position will hurt the party in the future, while others support it, saying concerns about eroding the 2nd Amendment amount to nothing more than “far-right fearmongering.

With all that in mind, you’d think that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would have an idea just what stances his Democratic colleagues have taken on the issue in the event it is brought before the Senate floor for consideration in the near future.

The Times Union reports Schumer is claiming he doesn’t know of any Democrat who supports Beto’s plan:

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer pooh-poohed O’Rourke as unrepresentative of Democratic views.

“I don’t know of any other Democrat who agrees with Beto O’Rourke, but it’s no excuse not to go forward,” Schumer said on a conference call with upstate reporters.

Seriously? How … could he not know that there are two Senators currently running for president who have voiced support for Beto O’Rourke’s gun confiscation plan? Cory Booker (NJ) and Kamala Harris (CA) both have endorsed it. While Booker’s and Harris’ presidential campaigns are going nowhere fast, they both have been floated as vice presidential possibilities.

Both Senators have penchants for staging theatrics at politically opportune times, so I wouldn’t discount either of them putting forth some type of symbolic proposal in the Senate similar to what Beto has proposed, even though they know it wouldn’t have a chance of going anywhere.

And as I wrote over the weekend, there are a number of other presidential candidates including frontrunners Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders who have expressed a willingness to get the government involved in some sort of “buyback” program, though they’ve indicated their programs would be voluntary.

Failed presidential candidate and current House member Eric Swalwell said over a year ago that gun owners should be forced to sell their “assault weapons” to the government. If the gun owners didn’t, Swalwell stated that “we should criminally prosecute any who choose to defy it by keeping their weapons.”

His position hasn’t changed.

There’s just no excuse for Schumer not knowing this information. Unless he’s lying.

Earlier this year, pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood, Emily’s List, and NARAL enthusiastically threw their support behind Marie Newman in the IL-3 Congressional race. Newman is a pro-abortion Democrat who is trying to primary out Rep. Dan Lipinski, who is one of the last pro-life Democrats in Congress.

Newman tried and failed in 2018 to unseat Lipinski, and decided to give it another go again this year. In addition to having the backing of the pro-abortion groups mentioned above, former presidential candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) also endorsed her this election cycle – as she did in 2018.

Though Gillibrand’s endorsement and that of current Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders (VT) and Elizabeth Warren (MA) are feathers in Newman’s cap, she received an endorsement this week that is even much more coveted in the fever swamps of the progressive left: Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY).

The New York Times reports:

“Marie Newman is a textbook example of one of the ways that we could be better as a party — to come from a deep blue seat and to be championing all the issues we need to be championing,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview.

Of Mr. Lipinski, she said: “The fact that a deep blue seat is advocating for many parts of the Republican agenda is extremely problematic. We’re not talking about a swing state that is being forced to take tough votes.”
[…]
“We are so proud that Marie Newman is the first Justice Democrat of this cycle to receive an endorsement from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,” said Alexandra Rojas, the executive director of Justice Democrats.

Lipinski responded to the news by noting that Newman would be the equivalent of a 5th member of the Squad if she defeated him:

“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement of Marie Newman makes crystal clear that Ms. Newman is an extreme candidate who is completely out of step with the voters of Illinois’ Third District who do not want to be represented by a fifth member of the “Squad,” Lipinski said in a statement.

“The Democratic Party — and our country — cannot afford an obstructionist “Tea Party of the Left” when we need to focus on winning this next election and passing policies that will truly help working families and all who are struggling in America today,” he said.

This fauxfended tough girl AOC bigly. She clapped back on the Twitter machine:

“Aggressive statements” – is she … serious? I’d say Lipinski kept it pretty tepid (read his full statement here) in comparison to what he could have (and perhaps should have) said about the unquestionable extremism of the Squad.

AOC’s little tantrum just proves once again how incapable she is of handling even the mildest of criticisms. I’m surprised she didn’t accuse Lipinski of inciting violence against the Squad, which as we all know by now is Standard Operating Procedure for the Queenie Quartet.

Most high-profile Democrats who have criticized Beto O’Rourke’s gun confiscation plan have done so from the perspective that they believe it’ll hurt the party in years to come, and that it’s undoable.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), however, is a different kind of Democrat with a different kind of perspective when it comes to the issue of gun rights. He was asked about O’Rourke’s gun control position on Thursday and gave a response reminiscent of the late actor Charlton Heston’s “cold, dead hands” 2000 NRA convention speech:

Manchin told a Wall Street Journal reporter that the former Texas representative did not speak for all Democrats when vowing to complete mandatory buybacks for certain high-powered rifles.

“Beto’s one human being,” Manchin said, according to a Journal reporter. “He gave his own opinion, OK? I think it was very harmful to make it look like all the Democrats. I can tell you one thing: Beto O’Rourke’s not taking my guns away from me. You tell Beto that OK?”

However, Manchin’s office reportedly told NBC news the senator does not own an AR-style gun.

At last Thursday’s Democratic presidential debate, O’Rourke said “Hell yes” in response to ABC News debate moderator David Muir’s question about whether or not he was going to take away people’s guns if elected president:

MUIR: Some of the stage have suggested a voluntary buy-back for guns in this country. You have gone further. You said, quote, “Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell them to the government, all of them. You know that critics call this confiscation. Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work?

BETO O’ROURKE: I am, if it’s a weapon that was designed to kill people on a battlefield. If the high impact, high velocity, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so you would bleed to death on a battlefield and not be able to get up and kill one of our soldiers. When we see that being used against children and in Odessa, I met the mother of a 15-year-old girl who was shot by an AR-15 and that mother watched her bleed to death over the course of an hour because so many other people were shot by that AR-15 in Odessa, there weren’t enough ambulances to get to them in time. Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against a fellow American anymore.

President Donald Trump also lashed out at Beto Thursday, noting on Twitter that “Dummy Beto’s” debate declaration on taking guns had “made it much harder to make a deal” in Congress on a compromise gun control bill by basically confirming what gun rights activists have been saying about Democrats for years: They’re coming for your guns.

When people think of Washington, DC, the first thing to come to mind is politics. While yes, men and women in suits on the Hill is a common sight to see, the culture that exists in DC runs deep, too, creating a whole other interest in the nation’s capital that can go unnoticed.

“I think people have the misconception that what they see in terms of our two biggest businesses, which is of course tourism and politics, is that people are dressed for those parts,” says Ean Williams, designer and founder of DC Fashion Week. “But we have such a vibrant nightlife, artistic history and creativeness, where there are opportunities for people to really show their fashion sense.”

Twice a year, upcoming and established designers from around the world—including individuals from Indonesia and Pakistan—have the chance to showcase their looks to the community of fashion-forward individuals at DC Fashion Week, which will be celebrating its 15th year and 31st show, from Sept. 21 to 29.

“I think there is a beat that DC has, it’s in the music, rhythm, the way people walk, and I think that’s what draws you into it,” says James C. Wilson, area director of BCBG Max Azria, this year’s only guest retail designer at DC Fashion Week. “There is a big fashion culture here, but it’s specific and I think nowhere else has it.”

BCBG Max Azria’s spring line, which will be debuted at this season’s showcase, features deep greens, exaggerated shoulders and asymmetrical looks that are classic, yet spunky, according to Wilson. Plus, there will be a lot more straight jeans on the runway in general, as “the skinny is out,” says Wilson.

Baille Gelwicks, regional director of the Fashion Group International of Washington, DC, Inc., is looking forward to see the expected common theme of the show: color.

“Neon green and pink dominated the runway shows of past seasons, so I expect to see the emergence of another unexpected and punchy color,” says Gelwicks.

In addition, she recommends keeping an eye out for company IconiQue’s latest collection, featuring elegant evening wear, which can be seen at the 31st International Couture Collections Showcase on Sept. 29.

While the fashion scene in the region wasn’t always considered one to watch, many local designers value the opportunity to show the community new, carefully crafted designs.

Nicole Coleman, a Northern Virginia-based jewelry designer, is participating in DC Fashion Week for the first time this season, just two years after debuting her collection of handmade leather pieces with company Sow Cole Creations

“I’m excited to present my brand to the world,” says Coleman. “I know I can relate to the everyday women, and this is my chance to share it with the region.”

The entire event started as a platform tailored for all shapes and sizes, as well as all ethnicities, in order to truly emphasize the cultural hub that exists in Washington, DC and the surrounding region.

“Throughout the years,” says Williams, “We’ve had challenges but we’ve been able to show that fashion is one of those things that connects everyone.”

Ilhan Omar Demands Twitter “Deplatform” Trump After Tense Exchange, But There’s Just One Problem

President Trump and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) engaged in a brief but tense war of words on Twitter earlier today that had the freshman Congresswoman demanding the social media platform take action against him.

Politico reports:

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) today called on Twitter to take action against President Donald Trump’s account and remove a tweet in which he shared a false claim that Omar had “partied” on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“They have a responsibility and they set community standards and clearly the president has shown many-a-times that he has violated their community standards,” she told POLITICO. “I don’t even know why his account is not fully suspended — why he’s not deplatformed.”
[…]
Trump today shared a tweet by conservative actor and comedian Terrence Williams that erroneously claimed Omar was out dancing on the anniversary of 9/11. “IIhan Omar, a member of AOC Plus 3, will win us the Great State of Minnesota. The new face of the Democrat Party!” Trump wrote in a caption.

Williams ended up deleting the original tweet after it was noted that the Omar dancing video was actually from a September 13th event, but Trump’s tweet is still up as of this writing:

Here is how Omar responded:

She also retweeted several tweets from others who called for Twitter to take action, as well as one from 2020 presidential candidate and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) condemning Trump:

Here’s the problem with what Omar is all but telling Twitter to do in response to Trump’s tweet: If Twitter makes it the rule and not the exception to delete tweets and suspend and/or deplatform elected officials for misleading claims, unintentionally erroneous claims, deliberately false claims (lies), and/or any tweet the offending party alleges incited threats of violence, then Omar’s account will need to be suspended or deplatformed, too.

That goes for all members of The Squad, and in fact for most Republicans and Democrats in Congress as well. Because there’s not a single Twitter account out there from a politician that doesn’t contain at least one or more of the types of tweets I mentioned above, including Omar’s.

In fact, Omar has been resistant to deleting tweets she posts that are clearly anti-Semitic and prone to incite threats, and has only done so in certain instances – including deleting one that had been up for seven years.

Not to mention they weren’t deleted due to Republican complaints or because of any genuine feelings of guilt, but instead because of intense pressure from some of her own party members that the tweets were a distraction from their far left agenda.

While I don’t doubt that Omar is on the receiving end of some pretty nasty threats, the same holds true for most other members of the House and Senate. Unfortunately, it comes with the territory. The threats and those behind them should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if deemed credible and serious.

But I suspect that the issue with Omar is not just that Trump’s tweet was inaccurate, it’s the fact that she was criticized – period. It’s become Standard Operating Procedure for Squad members to flash the “incitement” card when someone criticizes them – even when the criticism is legitimate. It’s a way for Omar and her Congressional BFFs to try and shut down the debate.

Demanding Trump be suspended or deplatformed for his tweet is just another on a long list of shutuppery tactics utilized by the left, another way to try and silence an outspoken critic.

Even with Twitter’s well-documented left-wing biases in mind, it’s not likely to work. But it won’t stop Omar from trying.

Heartbreak: House Democratic Impeachment Caucus Is Dealt a Setback After Pelosi Smacks Them Down on Two Fronts

Though the “bombshell” New York Times hit piece against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh has collapsed under the weight of its own deliberate omissions, that hasn’t stopped some impeachment-happy Democrats from demanding a formal impeachment inquiry.

But while the discredited report hasn’t prevented opportunistic Squad members and Democratic presidential candidates like Sen. Kamala Harris from hitting the gas on the Impeach Kavanaugh bus, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a giant red “STOP” sign in hand – and is already using it:

House Democratic leaders and rank-and-file members are dismissing calls to impeach Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, with some arguing the House has limited investigative resources and others saying it is a politically toxic issue.

Asked on Tuesday night if she sees the House spending any time on the Kavanaugh matter, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded with a simple “no.”

Pelosi didn’t elaborate, but other House Democrats boiled it down to fears a Kavanaugh impeachment show trial could hurt them in 2020:

Rep. Katie Hill, a California freshman, said she believes talk of impeachment could hurt Democrats on the campaign trail.
[…]
“… I know that this is not the issue that we want to be talking about just in terms of election,” she added. “I would like us to be able to just do what’s right, but I know that for many of my colleagues, it’s a really, really tough one.”
[…]
Pennsylvania Rep. Matt Cartwright also said his party should not prioritize the issue.

“Democrats are focused on the bread and butter, kitchen table issues facing ordinary Americans,” he told CNN.

Meanwhile, Politico reports on the “impeachment schism” that has grown between Pelosi and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler over the committee’s slow Trump impeachment waltz:

In a closed-door meeting last week, Speaker Nancy Pelosi stunned lawmakers and aides with a swipe at Democratic staff on the House Judiciary Committee.

Pelosi criticized the panel’s handling of impeachment in harsh terms, complaining committee aides have advanced the push for ousting President Donald Trump far beyond where the House Democratic Caucus stands. Democrats simply don’t have the votes on the floor to impeach Trump, Pelosi said.

“And you can feel free to leak this,” Pelosi added, according to multiple people in the room. Pelosi’s office declined to comment on the meeting.

Politico Playbook reported this morning that Democrats are far short of the votes they would need in the House to be able to impeach Trump. According to Democratic insiders they’ve talked to, 175 Democrats would vote today to impeach Trump if the issue came before the floor. That’s 43 short of the 218 needed.

So Pelosi is right to be concerned about how it would look for members if they tried and failed to impeach Trump in the middle of a crucial election cycle after months of Democrats like Nadler and AOC screaming “IMPEACH!”

They don’t have the votes now. They won’t have the votes later. Not for a Kavanaugh impeachment nor a Trump impeachment. Pelosi knows it.
