Metro will offer expanded service on the Fourth of July to accommodate the planned fireworks display on the National Mall. The announcement came a day after D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser urged residents and visitors to keep their Independence Day celebrations at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Though Metro said it expects crowds to be lighter this year compared to past years, the transit system said it would increase train frequency starting around 4 p.m. on July Fourth.

Trains will remain active past 9 p.m. at stations near the National Mall. The Arlington Cemetery station remains closed.

At the end of the ceremony, stations close to the National Mall will be open for “entry only” for 30 minutes. Those stations are:

  • L’Enfant Plaza
  • Smithsonian
  • Federal Triangle
  • Metro Center
  • McPherson Square
  • Farragut West
  • Foggy Bottom
  • Rosslyn
  • Farragut North
  • Gallery Place

In April, President Donald Trump said that he still wanted to go ahead with an Independence Day celebration on the National Mall despite the risks associated with the novel coronavirus. At that point, a White House spokesman said the event would be pared down compared to the robust event Trump requested in 2019.

The usual music portion of the Fourth of July celebration will be pretaped, but the fireworks will be live, according to PBS earlier this week, which produces the “A Capitol Fourth” special.

Over the past three months, Metro has discouraged all but essential workers from riding public transportation due to the pandemic.

After 9 p.m. on July Fourth, other stations will continue to stay open in “exit-only” mode until all passengers are accommodated, Metro said in the news release Friday.

Remember that westbound Silver and Orange line trains at that time of day will be served by shuttle buses beginning at Arlington’s Ballston station.

Celebrating the holiday season with a beautifully lit Christmas tree has been around for centuries, and each year millions of Americans take part in the time-honored tradition.

Another American, holiday-must is the National Christmas Tree lighting, a tradition that began with President Calvin Coolidge over nine decades ago when he lit a 48-foot fir tree on Christmas Eve in 1923.

In 2019, the National Christmas Tree lighting remains a holiday event attended by many in the Washington, DC region at The Ellipse at President’s Park, right in front of the White House. On Dec. 5, this year’s tree (the 97th annual) was lit by President Trump and first lady Melania Trump, followed by a show hosted by country music singer Jessie James Decker.

This year’s tree is covered in all-white lights, illuminating the tree from the star at the top to the very bottom. The tree selected to be planted in President’s Park was a 30-foot Colorado blue spruce from Pennsylvania, the first of its kind to be planted as a National Christmas Tree.

Other performances included “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band; singer Spensha Baker, who competed on Season 14 of The Voice; Colton Dixon of American Idol‘s 11th season; the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus; Chevel Shepherd, winner of Season 15 of The Voice; and more.

In addition to the National Christmas Tree, 56 smaller trees featuring handmade ornaments designed by students across every state and territory in the country, including the District, surround the bigger tree around the Pathway of Peace.

The tree lighting event will be broadcast on Monday, Dec. 9 on REELZ at 8 p.m., and also on Ovation at 9 p.m.

For those who are planning to visit the National Christmas Tree, the Pathway of Peace site is free to visit and will be open to the public from Monday, Dec. 9 through Wednesday, Jan. 1. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Saturday. Nightly performances will be held Dec. 11 to 15, and Dec. 17 to 22. They are 30-minute performances each and are free and open to the public.

Everything you need to know about this year’s White House Turkey Pardoning Ceremony

On the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 26, President Donald Trump participated in the time-honored tradition of pardoning two turkeys, and choosing one to be the National Thanksgiving Turkey, in the White House Rose Garden.

The act of giving a live turkey to the President of the United States has been a Thanksgiving tradition since 1947, yet that lucky turkey hasn’t always had the same fate it does now.

Prior to 1963, when President John F. Kennedy decided to reprieve the animal with a sign that read, “Good Eating, Mr. President!”, turkeys were eaten by the president and his family for the holiday feast. The official Pardoning Ceremony wasn’t enacted until President George H.W. Bush’s presidency in 1989.

Now, two turkeys are born and raised to be be pardoned by the president and live out their days on Virginia Tech University’s Gobblers Rest following the ceremony, which they have done for the past four years.

Prior to the 2019 ceremony, the two turkeys, known as Bread and Butter, spent the night at the Willard InterContinental Hotel, paid for by the National Turkey Federation, getting their beauty rest before a day of press conferences, meetings and an introduction with Donald and Melania Trump.

Both of the birds were raised under the supervision of this year’s National Turkey Federation Chairman, Kerry Doughty, former president and CEO of Butterball, LLC, in North Carolina on his family farm. This year, the turkeys raised on Doughty’s farm are American Humane Certified for the first time, meaning they were verified as receiving the most humane treatment possible.

Bread and Butter, both just 19 weeks old, have grown up listening to soft rock music and preparing for the bright lights, flashes and loud noises that come with this tradition, according to Doughty.

“I’m just a family farmer trying to put a face on what we do,” Doughty said at a press conference held at the hotel on Monday, Nov. 25.

Following a live social media vote that opened on Monday, Nov. 25 and closed on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 11 a.m., Butter was chosen by the American people as the National Thanksgiving Turkey.

After the live ceremony, Bread and Butter will make their way to Gobbler’s Rest in Blacksburg, where they will be cared for by Rami Dalloul, a professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and world-renowned poultry immunologist. Last year’s two turkeys, Peas and Carrots, live on the grounds as well.

Judge says woman arrested in CIA trespass looking for ‘Agent Penis’ later went to Obama home

The woman who allegedly trespassed three days in a row at the CIA headquarters and requested “to speak with Agent Penis” recently showed up at the home of former President Barack Obama, according to a federal judge in Alexandria, Virginia.

During a status hearing, U.S. District Court Judge John Anderson said he had been informed that Jennifer G. Hernandez, 58, of North Carolina — who is charged with trespassing at an agency installation without authorization for repeatedly visiting the CIA in May — later showed up at Obama’s D.C.-area home, despite the court’s order to stay away from all government-related facilities. She had been released before the trial.

Hernandez’s federal public defender, Whitney Minter, said she, prosecutors and probation officials are trying to find a way to resolve the case without trial, but said she was considering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Anderson told Hernandez, “You have to meet people halfway” in obeying court orders that could prevent a criminal prosecution in favor of getting mental health treatment.

“We’re trying to help you, not punish you,” Anderson told Hernandez. “The restraint the government is showing is unusual and appreciated” in not seeking to revoke her release before trial.

Outside the courtroom, Minter and prosecutor William Reed declined to elaborate on Hernandez’s behavior as she awaits trial.

Anderson said prosecutors and the defense want to “get you (Hernandez) to a safer place and get you the help you need.”

When asked if she wanted to say anything, Hernandez said she had been through a lot of turmoil, that a family member had been trying to kill her since she was 36 and referred to unlikely threats. She acknowledged being at the Obama home.

”I won’t go back there,” Hernandez told the judge. “Tell me what to do, and I will abide by the law.”

Anderson told Hernandez in a stern, but kind tone, “You shouldn’t be going to places like the CIA and the Obamas’ house. You have to fight the callings, and you just can’t go back there.”

“We all want to get this resolved in a nonjudicial way,” Anderson said in granting a continuance for a Feb. 11 court hearing. “Please,” the judge implored.

Watch: NSA Adviser Shuts Down Chuck Todd on Why Russia Was Notified in Advance of ISIS Raid

You’d think everyone would have been elated at the news, but the national media and Democrats including Obama loyalists and former Obama officials were some of the saddest, angriest people in the aftermath of the news of the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi over the weekend.

After the news broke, the mainstream media wasted no time in latching on to a Democratic talking point about how Trump had informed Russia about the raid in advance but not Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

NBC News’ Chuck Todd was just one of many journos who saw something sinister behind Trump’s decision to notify Russia in advance of the raid and “thank Russia first” afterwards, and he let National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien know it on Sunday’s “Meet the Press”:

CHUCK TODD: The president said that there were a number of folks that helped. He thanked Russia first. He thanked the Kurds last. Should we read into that?

ROBERT O’BRIEN: No I don’t think you should read into that. I think what the president talked about is that it was a very dangerous mission for our troops. And the president made a courageous decision to send them far into enemy territory at night, a long range helicopter raid. It was a courageous decision of the president. But it was incredible bravery and skill of our men and women in the armed forces and the intelligence community that executed the mission flawlessly. But they had to fly over areas where there was significant anti-aircraft capability, the Syrians, the Russians, the Turks, others. So I think we appreciated the fact that our helicopters and our planes weren’t molested. The Kurds played an important role in the operation. And we’re grateful for the Kurds and for the SDF and our allies there.

When Todd again pressed O’Brien on the Russia angle, the NSA adviser patiently explained again why Russia played a crucial role and deserved thanks, even though they were not an ally of the United States:

CHUCK TODD: On a policy front, Russia. Are they an ally of the United States in this fight in ISIS? And are they an adversary of the United States in this situation with Ukraine? How would you describe it?

ROBERT O’BRIEN: Well, let me just make it very clear, Russia is not an ally of the United States. The president doesn’t believe that. I don’t believe that. I think there’s anyone —

CHUCK TODD: First country he thanked today.

ROBERT O’BRIEN: Look, there are times when our interests overlaps with the interests of Russia. Last night it overlapped. We didn’t want Russian air defense missiles being shot at our men and women who were executing this raid. And, and so last night — and they don’t like ISIS, as the president pointed out. Last night, our interests overlapped with Russia. When our interests overlap with Russia, there’s no reason we shouldn’t work with them. Russia is not an ally of the United States and look Russia presents a great danger to the United States. And something we keep an eye on every single day.

Watch O’Brien calmly teach Foreign Policy 101 to Todd below:

And to be perfectly clear, per Trump Russia was not notified of the specific mission:

“We spoke to the Russians. We told them we are coming in. They said, ‘Thank you for telling us,’” he said. “We told them we thought they would be happy. They hate ISIS as much as we do. You know what ISIS has done to Russia. They did not know the mission but they knew we were going over an area where they had a lot of firepower.”

In spite of the LSM and Democratic concern trolling about what Russia knew vs. what Pelosi and Schumer knew, it was just a great weekend all around for the dedicated men and women of the U.S. military. Job well done, y’all.

Yesterday, US Special Operations Forces carried out a raid that resulted in the death of the titular leader is ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. This is President Trump’s press conference on the event.

Big picture here is that regardless of the press release war, there is obviously coordination going on between the US and Russia and Syria and Turkey to eradicate ISIS so that they can get on with the serious business of killing one another.

This raid marks a stark departure from the Obama era of killing everything that moved with drone strikes. I’m not opposed to killing people who need it but you are always better off capturing senior people than killing them. While al-Bagdadi blew himself up, the raid site was exploited. Prisoners were taken. Documents and electronic devices seized. This will lead to a cascade of raids and attacks based on this information.

Strategically, this probably will be seen as the last gasp of ISIS. It was already nearly eradicated. Funding and volunteers were drying up. When al-Baghdadi was killed he was hiding in a city in a hostile area. Hardly the mark of someone who is about to make a comeback. I’ve never been convinced ISIS mattered, but if it once did, it no longer does.

This take by an Obama toadie is just bullsh**. This operation was possible because despite the press’s brainless jihad about Russia, sane people maintained a relationship with them that allowed US overflight to get our assault force in and out. That counts.

The circumstances of al-Baghdadi’s death–described as only Trump can describe things–is not going to help his cause

This, like taking out bin Laden, is a great publicity exercise but probably of limited import. Both al Qaeda and ISIS were on the run and on their last legs when their leaders were taken out. Both of their leaders were isolated and in hiding. They will both limp around for awhile longer but they are a spent force. But the good news about radical Islam is that there is always another transnational terrorist movement in the making, so we’ll be doing this same press conference again in a few years.

Just when you think you have Donald Trump figured out and can put him in a box, he zigs zags and makes you stop and wonder what in the hell is going on. This time it is with people that allegedly he hates and wants them all to die.

Except that he also wants to there shorten prison sentences or eliminate them altogether. That has made Kamal Harris very mad being she put a LOT of people away in her time as a prosecutor in California.

From Fox News

President Trump took a rare swipe at 2020 Democratic hopeful Kamala Harris on Saturday, criticizing the California senator for boycotting a South Carolina criminal justice forum in protest of the group giving an award to him.

“Badly failing presidential candidate @KamalaHarris will not go to a very wonderful largely African American event today because yesterday I received a major award, at the same event, for being able to produce & sign into law major Criminal Justice Reform legislation, which will greatly help the African American community (and all other communities), and which was unable to get done in past administrations despite a tremendous desire for it,” Trump tweeted Saturday morning.

The president’s tweets came after he received the Bipartisan Justice Award from the 20/20 Bipartisan Justice Center for his efforts to pass the First Step Act, which grants early release to thousands of nonviolent offenders who are currently serving time in federal prisons.

Trump has by and large not mentioned Kamala and the other dwarfs running on the Democratic side. He has had a lot of fun picking on Joe and Bernie and the fake Indian and left it at that. However, Kamala who once was considered the shining star of this primary season has never fully recovered from the shot that Tulsi Gabbard landed on her in the Detroit debate about her lock up record.

I will admit that when Trump met with Kim Kardashian about commuting the sentence of a lady that had clearly served way more time than she should have, I thought it was a mere publicity stunt of two reality T.V. stars meeting. That has proven to not be the case.

When Van Jones showed up at CPAC and praised Trump and conservatives for this I knew something positive was happening. Van Jones Praises Conservatives on Criminal Justice Reform: ‘You Are Stealing My Issue’

Kamala probably was thinking that her law & order cred was going to get her major props and so far it has been a dud. Her at first instinct of boycotting this event and trying to look holier than thou does not look like it will work and might not even last a full news cycle. Stunts like this are meant to raise your profile and so far it looks like it has sent her into deeper muck. Now that she has changed her mind she looks even more indecisive.

There are only 99 days left until the Iowa caucuses. Kamala better get in front as many people as possible or her campaign is going to be dead on arrival before next February.

I don’t like to put on the tin foil hat often but this is a strange move to me. Presidential hopeful and non-favorite of Hillary Clinton, Tulsi Gabbard has just announced she will NOT seek reelection in her home district next year so she can focus on her Presidential campaign.

What is going on here?

According to MSN

While lagging behind in a crowded Democratic presidential field, Gabbard has gotten renewed attention lately after a heated argument with former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

The squabble seemed to give Gabbard renewed energy on the campaign trail.

Gabbard noted in her early morning announcement that the threats of war, international tensions and the threats of a new cold war convinced her she should focus on the presidential race

“I believe I can best serve the people of Hawaii and our country as your President and Commander-in-Chief,” she said in her statement.

The whole brush up with Clinton was a gift for Gabbard being it did give her renewed attention. She capitalized on it with her smack back of Clinton about her being a Russian operative while Clinton still holds the reset button she presented with the Ruskies as Obama’s Secretary of State.

Why give up a safe seat in Congress though? She is not going to be the nominee of the party.

Gabbard could be a rising star in the Democratic party as she comes across as not crazy while holding most of the same views as those who look and act crazy. Make no mistake about that. Tulsi might be more moderate on the timetable to achieve some of the horrible ideas that Bernie and Elizabeth are hashing out, but she is lockstep with the same overall goal.

If she is calculating that her announcing over a year early she is not running again for her seat will make her look more viable for the Presidential run, I personally don’t see how.

Maybe she has started off the 4th quarter raising more money than her campaign anticipated after the Hillary dust-up. Possibly she just doesn’t like being a congress critter anymore after traveling to Iowa and New Hamshire. Could it be that MSNBC wants to hire her after she drops out as a commentator on the network that currently is offering every excuse in the book for Hillary?

This is one of the stranger moves I have ever seen for someone who does not have a viable path to the nomination of her party. I have to admit I’m stumped and wondering how it unfolds.

I’m going to have the tinfoil hat on standby though just in case I need it.

California Is Acting Like The Federal Government Again, Promptly Gets Sued By Trump Admin

Westlake Legal Group smokestacks-620x349 California Is Acting Like The Federal Government Again, Promptly Gets Sued By Trump Admin white house Trump administration Gavin Newsom Front Page Stories Foreign Policy Featured Story Energy Climate Canada California

The Trump administration and California under Governor Gavin Newsom are locked in a power battle, with the Golden State increasingly exercising their independence in ways that test the purview of the federal government.

The newest theater of war is a cap and trade agreement California has entered into with the Canadian province of Quebec, a system that, according to the Los Angeles Times, seeks to lower emissions by making it more economical for countries to reduce carbon emissions than pay the government for the right to pollute.

The program works by establishing an annual limit, or a cap, on nearly all of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions. California oil refineries, cement plants and other industries can meet this requirement by either lowering their emissions or buying state-auctioned permits that allow them to pollute. These permits can then be bought and sold within an open market — the “trade” part of the program.

The theory underlying the program is that as the emissions cap is lowered, companies will find it more cost effective to decarbonize rather than continue to pay for pollution permits.

The Trump administration on Wednesday sued the state saying that California’s agreement with Canada interferes in what is essentially one of the enumerated powers allotted to the federal government alone: foreign policy.

“The state of California has veered outside of its proper constitutional lane to enter into an international emissions agreement. The power to enter into such agreements is reserved to the federal government, which must be able to speak with one voice in the area of U.S. foreign policy,” said Assistant Attorney General Jeffrey Bossert Clark of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division. “California’s unlawful cap-and-trade agreement with Quebec undermines the President’s ability to negotiate competitive agreements with other nations, as the President sees fit.”

The Supreme Court has recognized that the interests of cities, counties and states, and the American people as a whole, requires the federal power in foreign relations to be reposed exclusively in the federal government, keeping it free from local interference.

According to the complaint, filed today in the Eastern District of California, the defendants have pursued or are attempting to pursue an independent foreign policy in the area of greenhouse gas regulation. The Constitution prohibits states from making treaties or compacts with foreign powers, yet California entered into a complex, integrated cap-and-trade program with the Canadian province of Quebec in 2013 without congressional approval.

Newsom has countered that the lawsuit is little more than a political attack, continuing what he sees as an effort to battle the state in areas such as energy, immigration, and gun laws.

“The White House is yet again continuing its political vendetta against California, our climate policies and the health of our communities,” Mr. Newsom said. “The Trump administration’s abysmal record of denying climate change and propping up big polluters makes cross-border collaboration all the more necessary.”

Administration officials see the cap and trade agreement as another attempt by California to grab power and affect federal policy while also attempting to encourage other states to follow suit.

The Department of Justice has said that the lawsuit is not a political hit job, and that the White House was not consulted before the suit was filed.
